Many rug owners wrongly assume that an oriental wool or silk rug can safely be cleaned in the same way as a fitted carpet. In fact there are many reasons why a natural hand made rug requires more specialist care. pH Sensitivity Rug yarns are coloured with dyes that are set with a mordant. This involves stabilising the dyes with an acid and washing excess dyes from the rug. For this reason rug washing requires a constant focus on keeping dyes stable by maintaining a neutral to acidic ph. Generally rugs are pre-soured to stabilise dyes, washed with mild detergents, and re-soured during the rinse process to maintain dye stability. In contrast, fitted carpets are often cleaned using alkaline detergents prior to rinsing. Synthetic fitted commercial carpets are usually cleaned with very high alkaline chemicals which could potentially destroy a natural rug. Dry Soil Removal Comparisons Removing dry soil is the most important process in the rug cleaning and maintenance cycle. The soil will builds up and becomes trapped in the pile, works it's way down to the foundation and wears the fibres down as the rug is walked on. This dry soil is removed professionally using vibrabeating, portable beating or compressed air. Fitted carpets can only be vacuumed to remove dry soil. Rug Cleaning vs Carpet Cleaning Rugs, whether wool or silk, can only be safely cleaned while fully immersed in cold water. As the rugs are massaged with soft brushes, the water acts as a buffer protecting the fibres. Also, silk rugs can only be wet cleaned if fully immersed. A water extraction system will cause severe pile distortion. Fitted carpets are wet cleaned using a hot water extraction system. While this is an excellent surface clean method, it is not thorough or safe enough for the cleaning of natural rugs. As the rug is not uniformly soaked using this method, there is also a greater risk of buckling due to excess shrinkage in one area. In summary, due to their sensitivity to both heat and alkalinity, rugs must be washed using cold water and mild detergents. Natural wool and silk rugs are a valuable items which must preserved by delaying the wear and tear effects of dry soil in their foundation. This can only be achieved with professional dusting. Although a rug may not a appear dirty it must be regularly dusted. A rug laying in a normal traffic area can be washed every 18 months to a year however it should be

dusted at least once a year to protect the wool and silk fibres. Silk rugs cannot under any circumstances be cleaned using hot water extraction and so must be fully immersion washed if testing shows that the dyes are stable.
