Preface: How to Use the Instructor’s Manual The Instructor’s Manual for Connecting with Computer Science, Second Edition, is created to provide you with ideas for teaching a one-semester course in computer science topics. After this brief overview, an example course syllabus is included (in a separate file) followed by teaching ideas presented in a chapter-by-chapter format, which include the following:
Lecture and class presentation ideas Teaching Tips Quick Quizzes Topics for class discussion Additional student projects Additional Resources Key Terms
The lecture presentation ideas follow the section-by-section format of the book and are intended to give you a range of ideas for your classroom presentation. These can be supplemented with the PowerPoint slides that are included in the Instructor’s Resource. You may want to add your own slides as you develop the course and expand on the lecture ideas. Students often learn from open discussion of technology topics. For this reason, there are many discussion topics that you can present to the class. These topics may require students to solve a problem or work through a new direction in computers. All of the discussion topics are meant to be thought provoking and to help students apply what they are learning. Additional student projects are provided for each chapter, so that you have more choices about how to direct each student’s hands-on learning assignments. Most of the projects are designed for individual work, but some are created as group projects. If you so choose, you may want to make some individual or group projects competitive to see who completes them first. Or, you may want to have individuals or groups evaluate the work of other individuals or groups in a collegial atmosphere. Each chapter in the Instructor’s Manual also includes a set of interesting Additional Resources, which are Web links to topics of interest. Finally, each chapter ends with the definitions of the key terms used in the chapter.
