The Upcycling Centre project is the result of the Complex Projects graduation studio. The studio assignment was to explore the effect of future development and technologies on the public domain in Amsterdam. By 2050 the Dutch government wants to have a complete circular economy in the Netherlands. A fully implemented circular economy can generated a 7 billion Euro economy, 54,000 new jobs and a 9% CO2 reduction. The South-East region can benefit greatly from a circular economy, and appears to have the perfect ingredients for setting up a new Upcycling Centre typology. In this project the poor social economic dwelling zone Bijlmer/Holendrecht and the mono-functional business park amstel III, which faces high vacancy, are connected in a physical, social and economic way. A circular economy is implemented to create new local value and meeting spaces for social interaction between the two zones.

THE CHALLENGE

Within the project site there are two divided district both with their own problems. In the Bijlmer / Holendrecht area there is the high unemployment rate while the Amstel III area is struggling with large vacancies. Both mono functional areas are divided by the train tracks. The goal of my project is to connect this areas by introducing a smart resource network where people of the Bijlmer can work with the waste of the Amstel III companies to create new products and local value.

MASS STUDY

For the volume studies I used three existing case projects and a tower formation to research different architectural elements. A combination of aspects suited the environment and the program best. A rectangular shape on top of the train track created a physical connection between the two sides. By using blocks for every different program type the mixed use program became very visible and gave the building its own identity.

CIRCULAR CONSTRUCTION

The main reason to choose for wood as the construction material its ability to storage large amounts of CO2, which makes it a very sustainable and environmental friendly. Due to the smart detailing of the building it can be completely disassembled after its lifespan. The wooden beams are connected to the columns with steel connectors which can be taken apart again. The steel connectors are fully integrated into the wood, making the wood work as a fireresistant layer. The CLT floors are placed on top of the beams. After the lifespan of the building all the different construction elements can be taken apart and used for new projects without having to downgrade the material first.

CP_AMS EXHIBITION

The individual graduation project about the Upcycling Centre Zuidoost was part of a large, collective research about Amsterdam in 2050. In the CP_AMS MID City exhibition the collective models present the group strategy of various sites for the future of Amsterdam. During the exhibition opening students together with representatives from the AMS institute, the municipality of Amsterdam and well known firms discussed the end results and debate on the future ideas for the city.

To solve the problem of the separation of different social classes in the Feijenoord area in Rotterdam, the pixelated city building has a strong focus on sharing, social interaction, sustainability, flexibility and transformation. It is a mixed used building with dwellings for people who want to be part of a pioneering community from the perspective of sharing and meeting. By making a closed circuit of products and energy streams and by a big network of sharing and selling products a healthy and sustainable community will be formed with its own micro-economy. This way the building functions as a small pixelated city.

SHARING

Within the pixelated city there is a strong focus on sharing, both knowledge and space. In the floor levels there is a gradient in how much space is shared. For example in the top floors their are small studio’s that share together a kitchen and living room to stimulate social interaction and activity. By making divers apartments for a broad target group, young and old, from different backgrounds can work and live together in the pixelated city.

Henning Larsen architects is an international operating, world known architectural firm that currently employs 300 people in seven offices around the world. The practice is rooted in the Scandinavian design tradition, where people, daylight and space are important design parameters to create vibrant and sustainable architecture that provides lasting value to the users. Danish design and German engineering are combined to create high quality architecture such as the Siemens Headquarters, in the Munich office. During my internship I had the change to work with a international, highly skilled team on international competitions and projects to broaden my practical experience.

Batumi, Georgia Competition 36,000 m2 Hotel and spa Site research, concept design, designing and modelling, creating concept diagrams, presentation posters, facade, plan and section drawings

Green cape Hotel was an international competition for a luxurious spa hotel on a hill side next to the Black Sea shore. I took part in the research and concept design and drew the hotel floor-plans, sections and elevations. Together with the project architect I designed the concept diagrams and the final boards. In close collaboration with the visual designer I elaborated the Rhino model for the final renders.

By connecting the winding outline of the building intimate courtyards are shaped. Each of these courtyards is part of a sequence of gardens that create a recreational experience for body and soul that intrigue the senses.

MAIN FLOW

The clear layout of the hotel creates distinct flows for the public and private areas. From the main entrance there is clear connections to all of the hotels functions as well as to all hotel rooms. While moving on the main axis you get amazing views into the unique gardens and to the sea.

Quartiersentwicklung Berg am Laim was an international competition in the Berg am Laim district in Munich. The task was to design a lively new district centre with a hotel, start-up media offices, shops and a fitness centre. The urban tissue had a huge variety of scale, architecture and functions. My task was to start up the competition and research the program, context and traffic flows. Thereafter we worked in a team to design various concepts. This resulted in a design that connects with the surrounding scale wise while a interesting co-working courtyard and public square for people to connect and relax emerged.


FACADE DESIGN

By creating a closed outer facade the buildings got their own identity within the neighbourhood. The panel faรงades are lifted whereby a transparent and lively ground floor attracts the visitors inside the area. The hotel facade is designed within the same style and material as the office faรงades but adapts to its function and works like a landmark of the area. For the competition I drew the 1:500 plan, the faรงades and section and together with the engineer made a technical proposal for the facade detailing.

The assignment was to design a new art gallery in Rotterdam at the place of OMA’s art gallery (Kunsthal). My aim was to design a building whereby sustainability was integrated at the very beginning, while shaping the main volume. The result was a by contextual and sustainable forces shaped volume, existing out of two parts. One roof is covered with solar panels while the other one has an roof garden with an art route. The garden roof is oriented on the Museumpark. The interior is open and light with big wooden volumes in it that fill the space. The visitors can follow an exciting route through the different art galleries or visit the restaurant and bar which are connected to the square in the park.

TWO BUILDINGS

The Kunsthal is divided into two different buildings. One building houses the entrance, the restaurant and the auditorium while in the other building the art is exhibited. This division makes it possible to close on half of the building while the restaurant and the auditorium can still be visited. 35

Since I find it very important to gain practical experience alongside my studies, I worked as an architectural assistant at Current Architecture + Urbanism. Here I worked on mediumsized projects at all stages of the design process. Current architecture + Urbanim is a young architectural firm led by Stefan Witteman, who worked at renowned architecture offices such as MVRDV and OMA. In its approach the office is experimental with a solid sense for feasibility. Rational and sensitive and knowledge-based with intuition. My tasks consisted of making concepts, renders, facade studies, models (physical and 3D in Revit), technical drawing, urban plans and material studies.

After my bachelor Building Engineer I started a traineeship at AchterboschZantman Architecten. This is a small Frisian office which is specialized in highly sustainable wooden architecture. During my internship I made technical drawings and details with a Chinese architect for the Eco Resort Meijie in China which was under construction that time. For a competition for a preliminary school in Gorredijk I did volume studies and the facade design. Together with an architect from Onix architecten and a design team from AchterboschZantman Architecten we made a proposal for Parc New Bereg, a large sustainable holiday park close to Moscow.

The Eco Resort Meijie is located in the garden valley close to Liyang. For this highly sustainable and environment friendly project I made more than 30 different details of the wooden inner world, the spa and swimming pool and the exterior. Besides I worked on technical drawings while in China the construction started. The Eco Resort is completed in 2017 and finalist for the WAF 2018 in the category ‘Hotel and Leisure’.

Due the globalization in the world there start to appear zones in the metropolis. Global companies and organizations, like the IMF, fill special designated business districts in the city. This modern, glass skyscrapers, designed in the international style, don’t adapt to the context. This effect is also visible in Vilnius with its special business district. This way global and local get more and more separated. The assignment was to design an IMF headquarters in Vilnius. As a counter reaction the aim of this project is to merge global and local together. The underground skyscraper is taken out of context and stuck deep into the ground of the historic centre. From a public box it is possible to follow the activities of the IMF.
