In love with Djursland
The area has good museums in Grenaa, Stenvad and Ebeltoft, and the small and cosy Munkholm Zoo is perfect for small kids. Personally, I strongly recommend a walk through the beech forest in Gjerrild. When I was a boy, I often cycled through that forest on my way to football or friends. And I still enjoy browsing the many charity shops, where even the coolest hipsters can find treasure for small money.
Art & Artware
Sangstrup Klint is beautiful with the many stones to throw over the water and make them jump on the surface. And if You are interested in gods and goddesses, you find lots of unique historical burial monuments. Especially the barrows at Tustrup are a must. Another thing to be mentioned is Gjerrild Nordstrand. The beach that has seen most of my pale body, I guess. We always went there after school or work, all summer long. Every summer. In the 90ies we only called it »the best beach in Denmark«.

Witch-hunt at the manor house
Head of the theatre company, Hege Tokle and estate owner Alexander Gamborg are looking forward to welcome the audience to Syddjurs Egnsteaters play »Heksejagten« from August 7 until August 21 at Møllerup Gods
The nobleman Jørgen Arenfeldt, who owned the estate Rugaard in Djursland in the 1680ies, was taking part in the persecution of witches with big enthusiasm, and many women and also men died after having been tortured in the most horrible ways in the dungeons of the estate.
A topical drama with Syddjurs Egnsteater In the play »Heksejagten« (Witch-Hunt) we meet Arenfeldt, a power-hungry sociopath with a great self-image. With the authority of the state and the church behind his back, he is merciless persecuting anyone who can be accused of practising witchcraft. He is living at a time, where people didn’t ask questions about the decisions made by the church or the authorities. People were afraid of witchcraft and witches, and no one is protesting when Arenfeld is burning the women alive. The play is not only a journey back to one of the darkest chapters in the history of Denmark, but also a topical comment on the MeToo debate and the power structures of society. There still is a need to discuss how people can contribute to our society, no matter their gender, background or social status.
A play written for the manor house The play takes place at different locations around the estate Møllerup Gods. It was especially written to suit the unique locations in an around the manor house, which form the framework for the cruel and historical story abot the persecution of witches. You will hear music and singing, the screams of the women and smell the fire, before everyone leaves the venue and returns to our modern time. The play is the first result of a cooperation between Møllerup Gods and Syddjurs Egnsteater, and together they will create more cultural events based on local history and local partnerships. You can see »Heksejagten« at the estate Møllerup Gods from August 7 until August 21, 2021. For tickets and further information, please check w .syddjursegnsteater.dk/heksejagten

Tracks for hiking shoes, bike tyres and horse’s hooves
Everywhere near the coast you find excellent opportunities for walks and jogging tours
Cycle and hiking routes – in every direction Djursland offers a lot of marked bicycle- and hiking trails. Gjerrildbanestien – 45 km long trail from Gjerrild to Allingåbro. A part of the trail is asphalted, and it is winding through the landscape without big differences in altitude, as it follows the former railway tracks. In Ryomgård the trail is connected to Kaløstien. Kaløstien – 14 km long trail from Ryomgård to the ruins of Kalø Castle. North of Kalø you find some of the most beautiful views Djursland can offer. In Egens the trail is connected to Nordsøstien. Lodsstien – 31 km long trail between Udbyhøj and Randers harbour. The length of the trail on the Djursland-side of the fjord from Udbyhøj to Voer is 13 km. When the pilots (lods = pilot) in the past after a tour over the fjord needed to head back to the pilot station, they had to walk. Mols Bjerge-stien – 60 km long trail in the super league of hiking trails. It is leading through the very diverse nature of the national park, and the trail is divided into three daily legs: the hill-leg, the Kalø-leg and the Ebeltoft-leg. Certified according to the quality standards of the Danish hiking association Dansk Vandrelaug. Nordsøstien – a bigger network of trails near the coastline in
the countries surrounding the North Sea with a total length of 5000 km. In Djursland, Nordsøstien starts at the ferry harbour in Ebeltoft and is leading via Glatved and Grenaa to Udbyhøj.
MTB-tracks You find single tracks in the woods of Sdr. Plantage, Ebeltoft (13 km) and in the woods of Grenaa Plantage (Denmarks longest track, 24 km). In Porsbakker near Auning you find both an easy, intermediate and advanced MTB route.
Horse tracks Mols Bjerge offers around 30 km of horse tracks and 2 parking lots for horse trailers. In Rønde you find horsetracks in the woods of Ringelmose Skov and Hestehave Skov. The wooded area of Grenaa Plantage has horse tracks with direct access to the beach. Horsetrailers can park on both sides of the road Fuglsangvej around the intersection Rævevej.
Skateparks There are six skateparks in Djursland, indoors as well as outdoors. Some are also open for bmx-bikes, walking bikes and roller skates. w .skateparks.dk

– an experience with animals at eye level Munkholm Zoo is a family-friendly zoo with more than 90 different species, from farm animals to more exotic animals like f. ex. porcupines, different monkey species, camels, servals and reptiles. For us it is important that visitors get an “experience with animals at eye level”. That means you come close to the animals, and many of them can be petted and fed with food from the zoo. During the daily feeding round you can learn more about the different animals and help with the feeding, and during the animal demonstrations it is possible to f. ex. touch a snake.
Welcome to a fantastic experience for the whole family.

Big adventures at Kattegatcentret and Munkholm Zoo

Walking in the footsteps of Troels Kløvedal
The cosy zoo has got new faces
When Kattegatcentret in Grenaa was opened in 1993, adventurer and author Troels Kløvedal was one of the representatives behind the creation of the aquarium. He lived in Djursland for many years with his family, and now Kløvedal will be returning in the exhibition »Frihedens Værksted«, which tells the story of his adventurous life onboard the sailing ship Nordkaperen and his meetings with the cultures of the world.
28 years ago, Annelise and Benny opened the doors of their zoo for the first time to the public. The small zoo is well-known for the cosy atmosphere. You get close to the animals and can experience a 4 m tiger python or a tarantula at close quarters.
“Troels Kløvedals fascination for the ocean and his work to protect marine life are matters of the heart for us. Troels used to be one of the representatives for Kattegatcentret, and we found a funny letter from him which also will be shown in the exhibition,” tells Karsten Bjerrum Nielsen, head of the departments exhibition and education at Kattegatcentret. When visiting the exhibition, you can look forward to learning more about Kløvedals life, with the biggest aquarium in Eastern Jutland as fantastic backdrop. Sail to far away shores with the ship Nordkaperen and experience your very own adventures – just like Kløvedal did. w .kattegatcentret.dk
The founders have sold their life´s work to Milo and Lars plus family, who from now on will welcome visitors. Milo is a wellknown face in the zoo as he has been part of the staff for 1 ½ years, and now he has taken over together with his father. The whole family has moved fom Northern Zealand to Djursland, and they are looking forward to being part of the »wildlife« of the area. “We have lots of new ideas, but we will make sure keep Munkholm the way people know it – we want it to be cosy and safe to experience the many animals we keep and give people a good time,” tells Lars. w .munkholmzoo.dk

No matter the weather – there are always lots of activities to choose between. Try a go-cart ride, rent a bike, go bowling or cheer for your favourite team on the telly. You decide what to do and the time and pace.
Theatre and Music Djursland offers lots of events for all ages – both cultural and family friendly arrangements. Culture houses and music venues arrange lots of concerts and shows with both national and international names, and often it is easier to get hold of tickets here than in the city. There are many traditions and annual events, like Kammermusikfestival Nationalpark Mols Bjerge, Rosenholm Festival and Verdensballetten (World Ballet), which this year takes place at Sostrup Castle. The local theatre company Syddjurs Egnsteater is showing the piece »Heksejagten« (The Witch Hunt) at Møllerup Castle.
Dog-friendly holiday As a rule, dogs must be kept on a leash in the nature. During the summer, from April 1 until September 30, dogs have to be on the leash when on the beach. From October 1 until March 31 dogs are allowed to run free on the beach, as long as they do not bother or harm others. Please note that dogs are not permitted on some beaches – always check the local signs. Here you will find dog-forests, where the dogs may run freely: Dog park Auning Hundepark Egedal forest, Ebeltoft Ellemandsbjerget, Helgenæs Dog playground Fjellerup Østergård Hundelegeplads Dog forest Grenaa Hundeskov Dog forest Kolind Hundeskov Viggos Høj, Ørsted Caminorddjurs At w.caminorddjurs.dk you get an overview over the whole Caminonorddjurs and the different parts of the route. Visit Andersen Winery
Taste sparkling wines representing first class genuine craftmanship Andersen Winery in Vrinners is inviting you all summer to come and visit the authentic and inspiring winery, where you also can buy the many wines. There is a whole world of different wine tastes to discover, and you have the opportunity to join a guided tour and see how the exclusive wines are produced – genuine craftmanship of high quality. You find the winery in Mols Bjerge National Park, in a former dairy factory that today houses several small food producers. Andersen Winery is producing world class sparkling wines and supplies leading restaurants in both Denmark and other countries. Only the best Danish fruit, grapes and berries are chosen to be transformed into a taste experience in a class of its own. You can see an authentic winery on 400-500 m2, where the wine is produced using skills that go several hundred years back. A visit gives you insight into the production with the focus on good craftmanship.
From hobby in the garage to profession The man behind Andersen Winery is wine enthusiast Mads Groom Andersen. “Many years ago, I started to make wine from grapes in my garage, and I also experimented with other kinds of fruit and berries, when the weather didn´t play along and there were no grapes. I gradually developed a wine style, where you produce sparkling wines from fruit,” he explains. Andersen Winery was founded together with food expert Maurice Scott Lundby and entrepreneur Morten Rinder. An important part of their mission is to provide inspiration on how to combine the sparkling wines with excellent food. “We live on our good craftmanship. When we started, we supplied many of the Danish top restaurants like Geranium, Henne Kirkeby Kro and Molskroen with our wines. We only began selling to end users via different distributors in 2019,” says Mads. Find the opening hours of the winery on w .andersenwinery.dk

Eat out, order takeaway or cook your own food
The growing interest in local produce can particularly be felt in Djursland, also called »the larder of Eastern Jutland«. Many growers and producers focus on new, innovative food of high quality, and more and more restaurants are keen to use local produce. Everywhere on Djursland, you can find many interesting eating places. There is something for any taste and any budget. Djursland can offer anything from lovely Danish cuisine, pizzerias and buffet-restaurants to exotic eating places and gourmet restaurants.
Eating out Eating out can mean lots of things in Djursland. There are both interesting restaurants and interesting food and beverages to be tasted. Kelp pesto, meat loaf, fresh smoked fish or a sweet treat – you decide if you want to go to a restaurant, cook in the summer house or bring a takeaway meal to the beach and enjoy the sunset.
Like granny’s food A good example for the different food styles you can enjoy in Djursland is the restaurant of Hotel Crone at the harbour in Grenaa. Marianne Andersen and her team serve traditional danish food, like granny made it. Or, as she explains: Danish food with all the traditions. Tasty meals which could have been cooked by your granny, served with love and in generous portions with a fantastic taste and lots of good ingredients! You can order a la carte or try the dish of the day, f. ex. »Æggekage«, »Pariser Bøf« or »Tarteletter«, and everything can be ordered as takeaway, too. True to the concept of the restaurant, they are serving organic juice from Antons Saft which is produced after the same principles and with focus on quality, authenticity and great taste.

Kitchen rubbish heap at Meilgaard
Already in ancient times, Djursland has been a popular place to settle down. There are traces after the first humans on the peninsula, in the form of finds after smaller settlements of wandering hunter- and gatherer tribes, dating back to around 6500 before Christ. Around 5000 years ago a stone age tribe called »Bjørneklanen« (Bear Clan) had established a settlement at Kainsbakke. Archaeologists have found bones from bears, elks and pelicans. You find more than 800 protected cultural monuments around Djursland, most of them burial monuments, und many interesting finds have been discovered by archaeologists, among them the biggest hoard of coins in Denmark, which was found in 1967 near the village of Kirial and contained 81.422 coins weighing 33,5 kg.
The heritage of the communes from the 70ies With a dream of big and free communities and the wish to create a new lifestyle with the focus on new family structures, sustainability and self-suffiency, young and creative people from all over the country took over farms that were considered uninhabitable by the locals and settled in the area. They were
a creative kind of vitamin injection with a new view on life, theatre, music and design, and they left their cultural footprint many places in Djursland. The artist environment in Djursland is strong and diverse, and nature as well as the coastal environment are inexhaustible sources of inspiration for the artists. On a trip around the area, you will walk past galleries, workshops and exhibitions. You simply have to seize the opportunity and take a look inside. Behind even the smallest sign, you might find the greatest experience!
Ceramics, Candles and Glass Ceramic-, glass and textile art and quality handicrafts are also available in rich quantities. You can participate in candle making, and in and around Ebeltoft you find many glass blowers and can watch the glass artists performing their craft. You also find lots of well-established ceramic artists all over Djursland.

The vibrant capital of Djurslands
You can buy drinks and there is music at the town square each Saturday in July
The trading town Grenaa is the biggest town in Djursland with a great variety of shops offering branded articles you won’t find other places on the peninsula. At the cosy cafés and restaurants in town you will find new energy when you are hungry. Sankt Gertrud’s Church, unofficially referred to as Grenaa Church marks the square, and from here you find the shops in the connected pedestrian streets. The town has grown during the industrialisation and developed into a central town with important public functions, suburban train connection to Aarhus, educational institutions and a solid trade and business basis. Derelict industrial buildings have been converted into modern spaces with references to – and respect for – the rich industrial history of Grenaa.
Activities in the town centre On a walk through town you find beautifully preserved, halftimbered houses, multi-level building and modern architecture. The town centre is bound together by the big, open town square, where the kids can play while you can enjoy a drink, listen to music every Saturday in July, visit the flea market and take part in lots of other activities. In Smedestræde not far from Lillegade, you find The Old
Smithy, Den gamle Smedie, where the smith swings his hammer at the forge every Tuesday from 13-15.30 during the summer. w .handelgrenaa.dk
Art and culture Throughout the year, you can visit art exhibitions at the Town Hall, the culture centre Kulturhuset Pavillonen and the mill Baunhøj Mølle. In several locations, you can listen to live music, enjoy a freshly tapped beer, and visit a bar or discotheque. Pavillonen offers a broad cultural programme with concerts, stage plays and more. w .pavillonen.dk
The town at kids’ level If you have children with you, it can be wonderful to have a break from shopping and town life. Eat your packed lunches in the town centre in the park across from Pavillonen or enjoy the atmosphere by the duck pond. The forest lake in the plantation, the nature playground in the woods or the playground at the marina are other child-friendly spots. Or what about a trip to the bowling centre, if it’s raining?

Music Mecca with instruments, light and sound
Today, DanGuitar.dk is Denmarks biggest seller of music instruments. In 2014, Thomas Svenstrup bought the big industrial building which contains the entire company today. Right away he saw the potential for establishing the business with an impressive showroom which contains all kinds of musical instruments, sound and light systems, mixing tables and recording studio equipment. From classical brands to new producers. For young and old. For beginners and intermediates. Today, the internet shop has grown significantly and is also selling directly in Norway and Sweden at DanMusikk.no and DanGuitar.se.
A wide selection Everyone is welcome in the huge music supermarket in Grenaa, where musicians and music enthusiasts can go exploring. „You can come and test all our music instruments, light and sound systems. Playing music is a passion for a lot of people. Therefore, it is important that our clients can listen to and feel the instruments before they buy them. As we play music ourselves, we can offer personal and professional service and
good advice, so you end up buying a product that suits your needs. And you always get a good coffee, when you pop in.” Thomas is very conscious that an internet shop should be price competitive. He follows the price fluctuations on the internet on a regular basis to find just the right (low) prices. And the prices in the shop are the same as on the internet, even though it is possible to »feel« the goods.
Get your holiday purchase sent home to you Thomas knows the tourists may not have room in their car to take the new musical instruments home with them. “Fortunately, the internet shop is very efficient. If you order before 3:30 PM on a weekday, we can send all products in stock the same day. It is also possible to choose a specific delivery day, in order to receive the package when you come home after your holiday”. w .danguitar.dk

A world of furniture and accessories for the home
The big glass façade of SchmidtHuset in Kannikegade in the heart of Grenaa invites you to step into a world of design furniture and home accessories, all beautifully displayed on 3500 square metres on three levels. Right by the entrance pretty cushions from Hay in bright colours are wishing you welcome, together with furniture from Ferm Living and a big selection of handicraft. If you pass the bedroom section and walk up the stairs, you find the workshop where everything started back in 1913, when Ejnar Schmidt began to produce furniture and coffins. Today the old workbench is standing side by side with danish design furniture, and one level up you find the outlet section where you can make a bargain.
New generation and new impulses Jesper Schmidt took over in 2019 and is the fourth generation in the business. He has earlier worked with lighting and decorating big retail chain stores which clearly can be seen in the big furniture shop – it has been refurbished and the look is modern with high ceilings and music from brand new stereo equipment. The range of furniture is handpicked from leading manufacturers like Skovby, Nielaus, Natuzzi and Stressless,
combined with lighting from Le Klint and a wide range of home accessories from other companies. If you should fall in a love with a sofa or something else and don’t have space in the car to take it home – don’t worry. SchmidtHuset is sending to the whole of Europe. And if you come home and regret you didn’t buy that sofa, you can order via their web shop.
Fairs and events But there is more. The furniture shop has several times arranged events like fairs and even opera, and for the summer 2021 they plan a lifestyle-fair with more than 30 exhibitors. You can see more at facebook.com/SchmidtHuset. w .SchmidtHuset.dk

Town and nature – side by side
Many locals take the tour to Enslevgården on the river Grenå in a canoe or kayak
Not many towns the size of Grenaa offer such a varied nature so close to the urban areas. The stream Grenaa is flowing through the town and the green spaces, parks and many paths secure easy access to the forest, the beach and the heath.
Stream environment and urban beach Follow the cosy path along the stream Grenåen from the harbour to the town or the other way. The stream connects the marina and Grenaa beach, often called one of the best beaches in Denmark, with the town and continues past Grenaa golf course and into Kolindsund. The stretch from the harbour to Enslevgården (about 6 km) is pretty and rich in variety, and many locals take the tour on the river Grenå in a canoe or kayak. From the romantic white bridges at the culture centre Kulturhuset Pavillonen, the stream moves through the town, along residential areas and past the interesting new residential area Åbyen, which was established on an artificial island and provides a recreative and green urban space, perfect for hanging out and relaxing.
Active with maps in Grenaa town and surrounding areas Grenaa is a very green town with a well-developed network of tracks for hikers, joggers, cyclists and riders. Among other things, you will find Denmark’s longest single-track mountain bike trail in the plantation (24 km). At the tourist information office in downtown, you can get a map of Grenaa Plantation and Fuglsang Heath with marked running and hiking routes. Here, you can also pick up a guide for sculptural and nature experiences in Norddjurs Municipality, outdoor experiences and many other special brochures.
Town walk and bike rides During the summer, there is a free town walk with guide through the center of Grenaa on every Tuesday at 2 PM – meeting place at the Grenaa Tourist Information, Torvet 1. Here you also get a brochure with the dates for guided bike rides and harbour tours.

Enjoy a good time in Grenaa
The biggest town in Djursland has a lot to offer, all year round. Grenaa is like a big shopping centre with a wide selection of wellknown chains and interesting small shops. “We want tourists to feel that Grenaa is a dynamic and vibrant merchant town, when they come here,” as Torben Johansen, chairman of Grenaa trade association, explains. “Grenaa is a town for the whole family. There are lots of things going on all year round, but especially during the summer where markets and live music are arranged in the weekends. Also, the good cooperation with Norddjurs municipality and other organisations make sure there is lots of life in the town. In august we arrange the street music festival Grenaa Gademusiker Festival, and the whole town is full of street musicians from both Denmark and abroad. And we also host the local version of the European Street Market with street food from the whole of Europe,” tells Torben enthusiastically.
Smiles and good service The shops in Grenaa offer good and friendly service. You get friendly and professional advice and a smile on the way, when you
leave the shop. And it is easy to come to Grenaa by car, as there is lots of free parking space with a short distance to the many shops.
Say hi to Kirsten at the Tourist Information Maybe you need a place to stay for the night. Or you just want to know what is going on in and around Grenaa, while you are here. Take a tour to the tourist information in the pretty pink building which used to be the townhall, right at the market square. Here you will often meet Kirsten Rinhack, coordinator of Grenaa trade association, who also is the local oracle in the tourist information. w .handelgrenaa.dk
Authentic harbour environment and play at the town beach
Life on shallow water at Grenaa Naturskole
Grenaa harbour consists of four harbour environments – fishing harbour, modern marina marina, commercial port and ferry port. From the ferry port you can take a Stena Line ferry to Halmstad in Sweden, and a second ferry takes you to the island of Anholt. Close to the ferry port, you will find restaurants and an opportunity to buy smoked fish from the fishmonger. The marina has holiday homes and restaurants as well as a large playground. From here you can enjoy the view of Grenaa’s 7 km long sandy beach – the beach is family-friendly and has excellent facilities.
is running a staffed rescue tower, where the lifeguards are prepared to provide bathing advice.
Safety for water enthusiasts
Experiences at the harbour
At Katholm Strandvej you find parking spaces, toilets and showers. At Dronningens Ferieby, there is a bridge and a ramp for easy access to the water for wheelchair users. TrygFonden
Kattegatcentret is located at Grenaa harbour, where also the Kyst- og Fjordcentret’s high-speed dinghy, Havørnen (the Sea Eagle), is offering tours during the summer. In the dunes close to the marina you find Grenaa Naturskole, the location of the Blue Flag centre station. The nature guides offer activities along the coasts of Grenaa and North Djursland as well as trips in kayaks and fishing equipment.

It is Anholt Havmøllepark – the third largest offshore wind farm in the world and Denmark’s second largest. At Fornæs Fyr, there are benches and good opportunities to enjoy the view.

A paradise for sailors and an authentic fishing harbour
Anholt – one of the sunniest islands
Life at Sydhavnen in Grenaa
In the summer, hundreds of masts are swinging in the breeze at the harbour with enough space for both sailing boats, fishing boats and the local ferry. The harbour crew is taking good care of all guests, and it is a priority to get all boats safely to their place in the harbour. In 2020 the facilities for the sailors have been refurbished – the Sailor House got a new kitchen and the bathrooms and toilets have also been upgraded. The barbecue area got a complete makeover, with a new seating area with benches and tables from Sostrup Savværk, new and big gas grills and cosy LED lighting for late summer evenings. More projects are planned for 2021 to improve the harbour even more, among them a pretty railing with energy saving LED lighting. Right beside the harbour and the Sailor House is a beautiful beach with Blue Flag, so you can jump into the waves without worrying.
In spring 2020 the transformation of the harbour area Sydhavnen (the south part of the harbour) into a new and maritime neighbourhood for trade, culture and relaxation was kickstarted. It will become a relaxed and attractive area with lots of soul and authenticity, and the old fishing harbour will again be buzzing with life. A sustainable and recreative space with room for events, fun, innovation and a sense of community. The old grain silo provides the framework for pop-up events, club life and community life. The area is perfect for a walk, regardless of the weather – atmospheric surroundings and restaurants and cafés for a cup of coffee or a drink. Keep yourself up to date and see what is going on in the area on Facebook and Instagram: Liv på Sydhavnen
GRENAA · ANHOLT
Anholt – the island for simple living in the Kattegat
Beach trip to the lighthouse Anholt Fyr
Already on the ferry you will notice that you feel more and more relaxed. Both nature and the locals have adapted to the fact that there is sea as far as the eye can reach – no matter in which direction you are looking. Thus, the keywords for a visit to the most isolated community in Denmark are contemplation, nature and simple living. Anholt is an island like no other. The 25 km long coastline features fresh, crystal-clear water, sand dunes, endless white sandy beaches, a seal colony and a high sky. Most of the island is protected, and its. The island’s most remarkable nature is the Grenaa D8 page 32
Anholt is worth a visit all year round! Feel the peace and quiet – and experience the unique nature. During the summer there are fetes and fun at the harbour, and the rest of the year there is room for contemplation and living the simple life. Book your journey to Anholt at www.anholtfergen.dk
Desert, Ørkenen, which represents a unique piece of nature in Denmark and the largest heathland-desert of Scandinavia. You find three different types of landscape on the island: a landscape formed by glaciers, coastline and dramatic dunes. The lush and the wild desert. You find both peace and quiet and an active harbour environment with restaurants at the quay and live music on the long summer evenings. On a trip through the land, from the harbour to the town, several cosy sites and locations appear. Summer life on Anholt also means a kite surfer event, a music festival, lobster days, Danish folk high school and »Langt Ude på Anholt« – an art festival with scenic art chaos, and a marathon race. All year round you can learn more about the history of the island at Anholt museum, and you can go on guided hikes or sightseeing tours. There is only one daily ferry service to Anholt from Grenaa, which means that, fortunately, you will have to stay overnight before returning. w .anholtfergen.dk

Ebeltoft – Denmark’s cosiest market town
Market stalls in front of the Old Town Hall, Det Gamle Rådhus
With its slanting, half-timbered houses, cobbles and blooming hollyhocks, Ebeltoft is one of Denmark’s most charming towns. The square and the old town hall, Det Gamle Rådhus, form the heart of Ebeltoft, and they are the setting of many activities during the year.

Maltfabrikken (The Malt Factory) – a living culture factory
The name Ebeltoft comes from the Danish word »æble« (apple) – Ebeltoft is a piece of land with apple trees. On the streets and squares, big, beautiful concrete apples, carved in stone, decorate the city. The main shopping street of the town is called Adelgade and holds Farvergården, which is one of Ebeltoft’s most impressive half-timbered houses. Farvergården is the only preserved urban dyeing house in Northern Europe. Recently, the courtyard was beautifully renovated, and, on the whole, it stands just as it did when the last dyeing master lived and worked here.
Since its transformation from an industrial facility in decay into a living culture factory, Maltfabrikken has received both international recognition and the whole-hearted support of the local community. It has a central location in Ebeltoft and is a hub for trade, public services and cultural events, and of high benefit for everyone. The vision is to create life and meaningful content within the areas of art, culture, gastronomy, festivals and start-ups. The factory houses among other things the public library, the local centre of culture »Kulturloftet«, Det grænseløse Køkken and the Brew Pub, which at the same time is a malthouse and microbrewery driven by Ebeltoft Gårdbryggeri. w .maltfabrikken.dk

Authentic harbour atmosphere combined with innovation
Take a walk along the sea front
The old fishing harbour is still active and has transformed into an attractive area, where fishermen, carpenters, glass blowers, restaurants and delis work side by side. The atmosphere is special and full of diversity, and you can both chat with a boat enthusiast at the quay and enjoy a good lunch with your friends – accompanied by the scent of tar and smoked fish. You can jump into the water from the bathing jetty and the place is a perfect start for a trip with a kayak or SUP-board.
A walk along the sea front The town and the harbour are closely connected, and the many old wooden ships make for a fantastic maritime scenery, so a walk along the sea front always is a great experience – made even more spectacular by the breath-taking view over the hills of Mols Bjerge on the other side of the bay.
At Skudehavnen, you can enjoy yourselves catching crabs in maritime surroundings and arrange your own crab race, and during the summer you can visit circus »Hjemve« near the fishing harbour with animals, circus artists and entertainers.
Unique finds, bric-a-brac and glass art Both in town and at the harbour you find a great variety of restaurants, and Ebeltoft has many shops with interesting unique wares and bric-a-brac – treasures you won´t find on the high street of a city. The town is also holding up a proud tradition concerning the manufacturing and exhibition of glass art, and you find several glassblowing workshops in Ebeltoft. A bit outside of the town centre, at Marie Mølle, families with children can enjoy a fantastic play area.
Free parking Good parking conditions are found in the town center – see where on the map in this guide. REMEMBER to set your parking disc.

Craft in Ebeltoft
In and around Ebeltoft you find a lot of shops, artists and craftspeople who live and breathe for genuine craftwork in many varieties, and there is everything from ceramics and jewellery to clothing, glass and Danish design.
Colourful and modern glass design at Pust Glasværksted Owners Leif and Christina have created a family business and a time capsule in an old car repair shop in a back yard of the town. They have together more than 40 years of experience in glass blowing and know their craft. You can visit the combined workshop and shop and dive into a colourful world of glass, get a chat about the old craft and buy everything from glass installations over lamps to utility art. Come to the shop, see, touch and buy the beautiful glass, for example pretty gin tonic glasses with a pineapple pattern.

Fuglsøcentret is the biggest private concert organiser in Denmark with around 50 concerts every year. Mols Bjerge is a very attractive area which draws many outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers who want to experience the unique nature.
Hiking boots or pedal power Go on a hiking trip in the woods full of gnarled trees at Jernhatten or take a detour from the beaten track under the guidance of the Ebeltoft bicycle guides. In the forest Sdr. Plantage not far from Ebeltoft, you find a 13 km mountain bike track that has received good reviews from MTB clubs.
The stories of the fools of Mols The Molbohistorier are well-known collections of loonies’ tales that indicate the motive of stupidity that was attributed to the inhabitants of the Mols area. The origin of the stories has its starting point in the rivalry, envy and teasing within a community. The stories – passed on by oral tradition – have been gathered and written down by the educated part of the Danish population.
Discover old churchyards, ruins and modern churches
Sit down on a bench or a moss-covered stone at the idyllic and abandoned old churchyard of Krogsbæk near Hornslet. Listen to the birds singing and enjoy the peaceful and calm atmosphere between the trees, where nature has created a little haven behind the church walls. A big stone cross is proof that you are on consecrated ground. Once there was a little church here, surrounded by neat graves. For hundreds of years the locals came to the Sunday service, here they were baptised, confirmed, married and buried – until the year 1901, when the church in Karlby was built and the time was running out for the old church of Krogsbæk. It was demolished stone by stone, and left is a special and peaceful atmosphere, where you still can feel the vibes of the bygone times. This story is repeating itself when you come to another mesmerising old churchyard on Mols, the former church of Rolsø. A white painted porch and an old church bell are the last traces of the old church dating back to the middle ages.
It became a victim of modern development, when a new church was built in the nearby growing village of Vrinners. The beautiful old gravestones and the scenic view over the bay invite you to stay a bit longer, and why not bring a basket with tea and cake to enjoy in the peaceful surroundings. Decay and abandonment combined with a calm and peaceful atmosphere also characterise the church ruins at Baunhøj not far from the Health Care Center in Grenaa. Here you can walk on the foundations of the towns very first church, dating back to around 1150, which was used for 400 years. As time went along, Sct. Gertruds Church at the town square became the main church and in the 1600s the old church was demolished and more or less forgotten. Thanks to committed historians, who uncovered the ruins in the 1900s and got them listed, you can still see the ruins today and enjoy this special place full of history.
New churches with local involvement The churches you see in the beautiful hills of Djursland today stand solid and well. Despite being often very old, they still form the framework for religious acts and cultural arrangements and provide activities and a sense of community. Take a walk over the churchyards and take a look inside the churches, where you can feel the wings of history and see the shifting architecture and traditions of the different eras. Especially two churches in Djursland may not have a long history but tell an interesting story about committed people who worked relentlessly to build their own village church, where architects have played with traditions and modern form language and modern religious art is completing the whole thing. When you visit Pindstrup Church, which was built in the late 1960s in cooperation with the well-known danish architect C. F.
Kirkeruinen på Baunhøj
Møller, you also witness a peak in the economic adventure of the village. The development of peat cutting created growth in Pindstrup and made it possible to build the church. The result is a handsome building with a beautiful internal space, where soft light is flowing through the big windows with glass mosaics created by Peter Brande. The church in Trustrup is only 33 years old and the result of a good cooperation between the villagers, among them the local bricklayer and the custodian, and architect Holger Jensen. Both the outside and the internal space of the little church are harmonic and blend in well with the little town. Sit down on one of the church benches and enjoy the light playing with the motif on the altarpiece, depicting one of Jesus’ miracle healings. The town has been growing in recent years, due to its attractive location between Aarhus and the recreative Mols Bjerge national park. It offers speciality shops, good supermarkets, restaurants and cafés, all with a homely environment and personal service. There are many activities in the town throughout the year. Bregnet Kirke, you get a fantastic view of Kalø Vig to Mols Bjerge. For nice, child-friendly sandy beaches visit Nappedam Marina and Følle Strand.
Trip to Kalø Slotsruin
The peninsula of Helgenæs
Only 2 km from Rønde lies Kalø Slotsruin, an old fortress, which was built on a desert island in Kalø Vig. Today, the castle ruin is a favourite place of excursion for both locals and tourists. Via an interior staircase inside the tower, you can climb your way to the top of the castle ruin and enjoy the view of Mols Bjerge.
If you leave Mols, the road leads to Dragsmur and the peninsula of Helgenæs. In the beautiful, undulating landscape you find interesting nature areas as well as ancient monuments. On foot, you can follow the coastline all the way around the peninsula. From the car park, there is a path to Ellemandsbjerget, which is the highest point of the peninsula. At the tip, you find the lighthouse, Sletterhage Fyr, surrounded by a stony beach and deep waters. A path along the beach leads to Tyskertårnet from World War II. From here you have a view of the island Samsø and, in particularly clear weather, Sjælland and Fyn.
Nature and culture meet at Kalø There are more than 100 ancient sites dating back to the Stone Age and the Bronze Age in the beautiful beech forests and landscapes around the inlet Kalø Vig. From the Bronze Age burial mound Store Baunehøj and from the beautiful Late Gothic church
Go on explorations in the landscape Visit Agri with the highest-situated lake in Denmark and the impressive cliffs at Mols Hoved and Isgård. Bring a bucket and a fishing rod to catch crabs at Knebelbro, at the marina in Skødshoved or put your boat in the water and take a memorable sailing trip. The most child-friendly bathing beach of the area is Begtrup Vig.
Kolindsund – a nature paradise on 28 km2
Kolindsund is a fantastic area full of culture and unique nature, stretching from Grenaa in the east to Kolind in the west. You will find a rich bird and animal life, good fishing spots and you can take a ride with your bike along the canal. The shallow lake Kolindsund was drained at the end of the 19th century. The canals were dug by hand and pump stations were established – they still keep the land drained today. The whole area is rich in history and you find many traces after the people who were sailing on the lake back in time, and also traces of the people who live on the »sund-farms« today and cultivate the land.
Hiking and biking tours Kolindsund offers unique nature, and you can safely hike or ride your bike on the gravelled roads with very little traffic. You can arrange a tour yourself, or you can follow bike route 20, starting at the harbour in Grenaa and ending in Ryomgård – a marked track that is around 36 km long. You can also hike on the 7.5 km long red track Kløverstien which starts and ends at the church of Kolind.
Big flocks of starlings From September until mid-October you can watch murmurations of starlings, and throughout the whole year you have good chances of seeing and hearing birds of prey like peregrine falcons, kestrels, common buzzards, hen harriers, red kites and marsh harriers as well as kingfishers and nightingales. The birdwatchTower Kolindbro offers you a fantastic 180-degree view over the marshland of Kolindbro Enge.
Fish in the waters The canals of the Kolindsund area are rich in different species of fish and are said to be one of the best spots in Denmark for sea trouts. You can also catch pikes, vairones, rainbow trouts, breams, roaches, eels and perches. Every year even a few salmons and river trouts are biting. With a fishing license you are allowed to fish from the embankment-side of the north – and south canal and in the river Grenaa. Fishing in the canal Midterkanal is prohibited. w .kolindsundnatur.dk
Kolind – a real trading town
Visit the cosy trading town of Kolind, where you find a good selection of products in the local shops. All shops are located in the town centre and can be reached by foot. The town also arranges lots of events and local fetes, which create buzzing life in the streets.
If your dog is joining the family and needs a bit of free running and fresh air, you can visit the dog forest in Kolind – a fenced area, where your dog can play and meet other dogs. The benches there are popular and perfect for a little picknick in the open air.
Kolind has a central location with connection to the suburban railway, which winds through the landscape and stops in the town centre. A great opportunity to hop off and explore Kolind when you are on your way to Grenaa or Aarhus anyway.
Outdoor pool and summer life During the summer it is nice to jump in the water of the outdoor pool in Kolind – actually you can choose between two heated pools. There is also a »palm beach«, and you can play beach volleyball and beach handball.
Skating arena and dog forest The kids will not be bored in Kolind – they can visit the skating arena Kraftværket and enjoy themselves with their skateboard, walking bike or BMX bike and the many ramps, together with lots of other children and teenagers. Kraftværket is a safe and fun place for young people, and during the opening hours there is always an adult volunteer keeping an eye on things.
Not far from Kolind is the wildlife park Skandinavisk Dyrepark, the most natural zoo in Denmark. From the boardwalks that are winding through the park, you have an excellent view and get close to polar bears, brown bears, wolves and sea eagles. And if you prefer a bit of action, there are only 9 km from Kolind to Djurs Sommerland. w .kolindhandel.dk
