Why do we entertain troublemakers?

he debate over immigration reform invites us to review the kind of people we Americans want here. Analysis goes beyond looking at candidates’ abilities to fill gaps in the labor market. Personal character and contribution to the common good also must energize our reexamination. Recent headlines are pushing the issue forward. A grassroots movement obligates President Obama to address it. An online petition submitted on Jan. 23 to the White House’s “We the People” Web site (petitions. whitehouse.gov) has collected nearly three times the 100,000 signatures required to force a response from the president. The petition – “Deport Justin Bieber and revoke his green card” – accuses the Canadian pop star of “dangerous, reckless, destructive, and drug-abusing” behavior that threatens public safety. Bieber “is also a terrible influence on our nations (sic) youth,” the 73-word petition states. As of noon on Wednesday (Feb. 5), 244,537 people had signed the entreaty to “remove Justin Bieber from our society.” During a recent White House press conference, spokesperson Jay Carney told reporters when asked that a response to the petition would come “relatively soon.” Revoking visas, however, is the State Department’s responsibility. Jen Psaki, a State Department spokesperson, has so far only said she would check on visa implications for a foreign national convicted of a crime. Bieber was arrested on Jan. 23 in Florida for driving under the influence (DUI), driving with an expired license, drag racing and resisting arrest. He’s scheduled to be arraigned on Feb. 14. Felony vandalism charges also could be in the offing. Bieber’s accused of causing about $20,000 in damages to his neighbor’s house in California. Officials there are reviewing security videos to determine whether to charge Bieber. He also faces assault charges in Canada; Bieber’s accused of hitting a man during a Dec. 30, 2013, altercation. Under U.S. immigration law, aggravated felonies and crimes of moral turpitude are grounds for deporting foreign nationals. DUI is one example of a crime of moral turpitude. We won’t know until the outcome of any criminal cases against Bieber how they’ll affect his immigration status. But here’s the bigger issue: Does Bieber represent the kind of person we want here? Is he contributing to the common good? There are millions of non-citizen immigrants in our great country. Most are productive, regardless of their legal status. They’re helping to underwrite strong, decent communities and affirm faith and family values. Many have been here for years. Those who are here illegally, despite being otherwise lawabiding, live under the threat of deportation. At the opposite end of the social spectrum is Bieber – here legally, but boldly flouting our laws and standards of decency and propriety. He’ll still be able to influence our youngsters if we revoke his visa, but he’ll no longer be rewarded for reckless misconduct. His O-1B non-immigrant visa for “extraordinary ability” in the arts is a privilege he’s forfeited with his unprincipled, unacceptable behavior.
