of a City

Dimitra Dritsa || architecture porftolio ||| Nauplia-The Timeline of a city

The diploma project deals with Nafplio, an important cultural centre and a major tourist destination. The historical and theoretical background that preceded the intervention phase, included thematics of interest such as: -the interference of fortification structures in the form of the urban network, - the topography of the solid and the void, as well as the imaginary lines and boundaries formed by traces of history the transformation of a well-defined urban cell to the centre of the process of the urban sprawl, the overlapping historical and cultural layers that come as a result of several conquests of the city. Another major topic of concern was the imprint of the intense touristic development, which is largely associated with major spatial modifications through the last 50 years. The shift from the 70's theories of “modern” tourism towards the contemporary discourse of “postmodern” tourism brought the decline and desymbolization of the Xenia Hotel, a large unit of austere, doric design sited on the archaeological site of Acronafplia. Our proposal aims to give a new perspective to the crisis of monumentality, giving the architectural monuments back to the people.

Dimitra Dritsa || architecture porftolio ||| Nauplia-The Timeline of a city After the site analysis we concluded to a zone that brings some lost traces of memory to the surface, while it maximizes the results of interactions between the historical reminiscents, the built and the natural environment. Our proposal focuses on this zone, which follows the vanished path of the venetian moat and highlights a specular transition from the old historical center to the modern city. Especially important for our project were the spatial diversities found in the boundaries that form the zone. The proposal is based upon three design elements that reorganize the space, enabling different perceptions of the five focal points, the five loci mentioned before. Through its intented simplicity, our solution aims to enable different interpretations of the space, while minimizing the impacts to the natural environment.

The water axis, a concrete route that reestablishes the connection between the

-

water front and the “Arvanitia” beach. Like pouring water into a pot, this route takes the shape of the hollow cavity that its boundaries determine. It acts as a gouge, sculpting sloping planes and sedentary surfaces, reaching a peak in “Arvanitia” square, where it takes amphitheatrical formings. Right before approaching the “Arvanitia” beach, it creates a shadowy space under the lower concrete slab of “Amphitryon” restaurant. Afterwards it surges like a wave, shaping an intermediate space between the beach and the sea.

The elevated routes

Co

nc e p t

follow an archetypal morphological alphabet, embracing the five loci like a curve encircles a point. This synthetic move has a fundamental role in our design strategy, as it serves mainly as a theoretical approach towards the dipole Axis-Point . The five elevated routes form a network of possible circulations that surround and highlight the fivepoints of interest.

The green paths

06

are used as a tool for landscape design. The plants complete the composition by forming green corridors and resting areas, small urban sense- awakening gardens, or visual guidelines.

Dimitra Dritsa || architecture porftolio ||| The Red Line

This studio focuses on the linear axis of a part of the abandoned railway tracklines in Piraeus, organizing a public space processing system which develops and expands like an urban ribbon. The ribbon becomes an entire living framework aiming to regenerate the urban body. The system acts as a familiar, habitable and dynamic framework able to contain events and situations of both collective and individual actions. The Red Line crosses over the vertical pedestrianized streets, reshaping the squares, creating intimate points of rest, urban services and key intersections. It binds together the industrial past and the future in a symbiosis of diversities. Our strategy is the creation of three major points of interest that attract different social groups. Two blocks of student residences and a residential complex. . Each of the individual blocks integrates into the existing fabric terrain. Utilizing the strict grid of the city center and the invisible parallel lines formed by the reminiscents of the tracklines, the Red Line brings a variety of living types, building typologies, and plot sizes.

The Art Condenser is a museum of contemporary art, sited in Microlimanon of Piraeus. Located on the edge of a highly developed waterfront, it aims to become a cultural point oďŹ nterest in a recreation area, chanelling the urban ows into a pattern of connections between the city and the harbour, the hill of Piraeus and the ground level, the public and the private. Among the most inspirational elements of the synthesis were: -The wall that forms the northwest boundary of the site -The abandoned modernist building of G.Liapis, The importance of this studio lies in the different levels of involvement that it requires: from conceptual models in 1:500 to a complete construction study. The aim is to strengthen the abilities of handling a large project, from the beginning to the engineering details.

Dimitra Dritsa || architecture porftolio ||| The Refuge

The subject of this course is the detailed design of a refuge. The aim is to approach architecture through the design and construction of a physical model, while specializing in design principles and rules relating to metal and woodwork constructions. The synthetic procedure bases on theoretical training, practical tests with models, sketches and design applications . This continuous research process aims at understanding the general principles of lightweight construction, as well as experimenting and ďŹ nally applying the gained knowledge on manufacturing on the physical model.

This project focuses on the activation of the former Apostolos Nicolaidis Stadium as a large public space. Sited in the heart of Athens, the park is a transitional zone between the Lycabettus hill and the urban network. The synthesis is based on an elevated route and a concrete promenade, which guides the urban explorers to a green shelter. The green paths have an integrating role in the synthesis. The height, the colour, the density of leaves are used in spatial arrangement as light walls. The trunks are used as columns, and the canopies as horizontal layers for shading and cooling. Vertical patterns act as complementary synthetic elements, deďŹ ning the boundaries of planted planes.

living on the edge of water

Dimitra Dritsa || architecture porftolio ||| Living on the edge of water

We are in 2005. Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, flooding 80% of the city. A city is born by the water and then falls victim to the ravages of nature. It is thus investigated the reason the city is growing in this limit, and whether the man is responsible for the destruction. This study uses two parallel narratives. A symbolistic literary narrative which places more emphasis on our personal vision for each city's identity, and a more scientific one, which focuses on solid evidence of the reality, from scientific definitions of water elements to computable scale of the disaster, captured as spatial data in cities. The diversity of geomorphological characteristics as we move from the river to the estuary and finally to the island, creates multiple sections with differentiating spatial qualities. Through spatial symbolisms we categorize and understand the ways that these spatial qualities have influenced different confrontations that communities have towards the intermediate space between sea and land. Another basic intention was to study the selected case studies as models, bare from the cognitive backtround, he cultural identity that inevitably distinquishes every specific case from the others. That process aims to transform every example to a generic case, bringing to the surface primordial similarities and diversities. The inevitable semiotic connection between a city and its name is broken by rebaptizing the cities, and then focusing on its core spatial characteristics Finally, through this work, it is explored whether the scientific leadership will ever be able to control the unpredictability of the natural element.

We believe that the creative procedure of depicting a piece of information, of combining the real with the imaginary to produce a story that phenomenically belongs to the grounds of literature but conveys a hidden symbolism, awakens mental processes associated with operations similar to those used when designing. Dimitra Dritsa || architecture porftolio ||| The Imaginary Museum

This studio redefines the “museum”, exploring the work of Andre Malraux, Le musee Imaginaire, and researching thematics such as: /Spatial mediation -Transformations /The break with tradition-entering the environment of modernism /Jaqcues Derrida,Michel Foucault: Construction and deconstruction /the deconstructive process of nature , time and history / The “Et in Arcadia ego” theme /dialogues with sacred spaces / Walking Lines / Walking Circles (Richard Long) The task included the effort to deconstruct the traditional idea of the museum, determining how the architect can reproduce the metaphysical and ritualistic essence of the space. The philosophical research concluded in a synthetical experiment in Kerameikos, an sacred burial site existing from the prearchaic times, strongly connected to the Eleusinian Mysteries. The proposal was based on the idea of a specular reconstruction of the agonizing efforts of a soul trapped in an in-between realm between the physical and the non-physical world. This atmosphere is achieved partly through the archetypal geometry of the space, and partly through the relationship between the object and the dipole light/ shadow .

An important imfluence was the function of light and shadow in the platonic Analogy of the Cave. The visual contact with the exhibits has two stages, one with the lights on and one when the shadows start to create the effect. The chaotic confusion of the real and the shadowy imaginary creates subconsciously an analogy between the experiential indermediate place of the museum and the archetypal fear towards death, the unheimliche, the world of shadows. The geometry of the designed space is a reference to the archetypal prototypes of the circular “tholos”, and the frusto-conical tombstones of Kerameikos.
