A passion for colour

Vibrant, colourful, bold and exciting! These are a few of the words that spring to mind when considering the paintings of Gerart.

This hugely talented young artist from Cape Town has the knack for combining excellent drawing with a confident and expressive style of painting that is his own. To many he is already a household name in and around South Africa and is taking the art world abroad by storm.

Small town, big talent

Coming from a small town it was hard for Gerart to find his way around the art world.

As a young boy it was evident that he had talent … and loads of it. With only some paper and a few pencils, Gerart could keep himself busy for days on end, absorbing the beauty of everything around him and putting it down on paper as only he could.

His passion for animals, and especially horses, was evident in every piece of art he created. Not only did he capture the beauty, he knew how to capture the spirit, strength and grace of the creatures he views as magnificent. He drew everything he could lay his eyes on, cars, animals, landscapes, portraits and even the human body.

Little did he or anyone around him know that this ‘hobby’ would turn his dream of being a well-recognised international artist into a reality. Locally, this dream was realised by opening his own art gallery in Franschhoek in 2017 – Gerart Exclusive Art Gallery in the Western Cape.

A world of inspiration

Gerart finds his inspiration by absorbing everything around him, colour being the biggest influence on his work. He is not afraid to go to extremes when it comes to using colour and bold strokes, and his confidence is evident – the boldness of stroke not in any way detracting from the delicate nature of the subjects. He combines passion, knowledge and emotion to create his art.

“I love working with acrylic paint because it complements my technique. Having a blank canvas in front of me holds endless possibilities of creating. That excites me!”

Rule-breaker

Gerart was always different when it came to rules in the art world. He wanted to be versatile and explore all subject matters. In doing this he has been highly successful.

When painting portraits he captures emotion and passion, saying that the eyes reflect the colour of the soul. “I want to speak to the heart of every person who looks at it; I want them to feel what I feel.

It has to be an emotional connection … giving a little bit of myself.”

It is truly difficult to walk past a painting by this artist without turning one’s head!

In the words of my Artist Friend, the late Robert Badenhorst

This is also one of the reasons Gerart loves painting horses.

“When looking into their eyes I see their soul, I feel their spirit.”

Gerart loves taking time out of the studio and taking pictures of these beautiful animals. “Spending time with them makes it easier to portray them on a canvas because I can still smell them, hear them, and feel them.”

“I don’t overthink it … it is a feeling that I capture on canvas, just like capturing a beautiful butterfly. Using bold strokes and bright colours and making a beautiful mess. Some of my best work was created by using my worst brush! I love my job.”

Gerart’s paintings hang in private and corporate collections throughout South Africa and he is well represented in many top art galleries.

Any subject that he tackles is carried to the canvas with a flair and exuberance which leaves one in no doubt that a part of the artist himself is incorporated into the artwork.

Tips on how to warm up for a competion The start of your preparation before the class is to warm up on the flat for 5 to 10 minutes. This will depend on the horse as some horses need more work than others before jumping but let’s take the average horse.

Starting to Jump Begin with the cross pole two or three times followed on by a fairly small vertical. Jump this several times getting bigger each time if you and your horse are feeling confident. Never jump too big before going into the ring. After the vertical progress to the oxer using the same format as with the vertical.

I you are satisfied with what you have done so far give your horse a couple of minutes walking and finish up over the oxer followed by the vertical at the highest height you will be jumping in the ring. For some horses it is better to jump a little smaller than the jumps in the ring.

“I have some riders in the 1.50m, World Cup and Grand Prix classes who never jump big in the warm-up and some who like to jump huge, all have been successful”. One thing to remember is do not over work or over jump your horse in the warm-up. I see riders jumping over and over again after which the horse must go into the ring and still jump a clear round.

There is an old saying “Do not leave your horses jump in the warm up”.

If you have a mishap i.e. a stop or crash into a jump - lower the fence and remember it is not necessary to build it back up into the height it was – rather finish a little lower and enter the ring with both horse and rider confident.

Tips to remember 1. You and your horse are partners and you need to believe in each other

Gonda and Budjet 2. Try not to get into the way of other riders especially when jumping, there is nothing more annoying and dangerous than a horse and rider crossing the path of the approach or landing side of a jump when someone else is jumping.

3. Remember you do not own the jumps they are there for all the competitors to share. Be polite to the marshal’s and stewards in the warm up. They are there for a reason. It is a thankless job. They are often there for several hours at a time in good and bad weather, never getting to watch the actual competitions.

Lastly if you are disappointed with your round do not take it out on your horse by spurring him or pulling him around. He has left the arena and does not know why you are behaving in that manner.

Not only is it unnecessary to behave this way it is very unsporting and a bad example to others

This is a fun competition. You will be required to dress up, walk “the runway” and answer 3 questions.

Heather Robertson “I am 24 and moved to the Netherlands last year to do my Masters degree in Stochastics and Financial Mathematics at the University of Amsterdam and I was fortunate enough to bring my horse, Charmeur M, with me. It has been a very rewarding experience moving to the Netherlands, although difficult at times – homesickness was my biggest hurdle.

Charmeur has made my dream come true after competing at the Monaco Global Champions Tour and placing 6th in our first Longines Ranking Class. No words could describe the experience.

I train under Wout-Jan Van Der Schans, both Charmie and I continue to grow under his guidance. My long-term goal is to compete at WEG and European Champs.”

Lisa Williams In November 2017 I started the journey of a lifetime with my friend Vitality Campbell. After four months in quarantine we finally arrived at Liege airport, Belgium. We have travelled to places I had never dreamed of going to, jumped courses that have terrified me and pushed our limits on many occasions. We have grown in the sport and hope to very soon realize our dream, which is to proudly enter the WEG stadium at Tryon, USA in September 2018.

The best memories so far have been competing as part of a South African team at two Nations Cup Shows. Help and support for our journey has been immeasurable from my family, George and Alex, my very caring and generous parents, my unbelievably dedicated friend and coach, Dominey Alexander, my extremely generous friend Tokkie (Johan Kachelhoffer) and all my fellow competitors, friends and supporters in SA. Govett Triggol I have had the most incredible journey with my wonderful string of horses in Europe. The learning curve has been steep and the competition very tough; you could say a rollercoaster of highs and lows! Nonetheless, it most definitely has been an opportunity of a lifetime. Amongst the many disappointments there has been some success, which has made my sacrifices worthwhile, they are: - 1st 1* Grand Prix of Wildeshausen 2017 - 3rd 2* Grand Prix Olivia week1 2017 - 1st 2* World ranking class Olivia week2 2017 - 4th 2* Grand Prix Olivia week2 2017 - 2nd 2* World ranking class Olivia week3 2017 - 6th CSIO nations cup Drummen 2018 - 5th 3* Grand Prix of Isenhagen 2018 I am looking forward to my first 4* Grand Prix in Samorin and then C - Ultra and I are off to fulfil one of my greatest dreams, to compete in the World Equestrian Games in September.

Alexa Stais I have experienced the most incredible journey since moving to Germany in April 2015. From my Morsum base at Hilmar Meyer’s yard near Bremen I have learned that ‘teamwork makes dreamwork’. Life is tough and the days are long, but I am privileged to be living my dream. I realise that I am still very young and that there is much to learn in this sport. I do try to come away from every show with something positive.

I have been privileged to ride several talented horses, in the process representing South Africa and being lucky enough to qualify two horses for WEG at consecutive Nations Cup events in Norway and Denmark. Quintano and I were the only combination to jump a double clear in the Nations Cup class in Norway. Those two events will forever remain highlights in my career. Last year I received the prestigious Goldenes Reitabzeichen (Riders Performance Award in gold) from the German Federation.

None of this would have been possible without the most amazing support from owners, patrons, sponsors, friends and family. I pray that their support and my recent achievements will carry me through to compete successfully at the World Games in Tryon in September. Bjerglunds Cuba (Clarimo x Limbus), the superbly talented and scopey 12-year-old mare who won me a car at a 4* event last year, is my chosen ride for WEG.

Oliver James Lazarus I am 30 years old, born in Switzerland but grew up in Cape Town where I started my riding career on ponies, attending the Cape drag huts and Pony Club events, slowly moving up through the grades of competitive competitions representing Western Province in all disciplines in Pony Riders until I funnelled solely in show jumping. Due to my horses living in Johannesburg, I decided to change alliances and compete for Gauteng where we won the team show jumping gold medal in 2003. I have been lucky enough to sit on some great ponies and horses throughout my career, which enabled me to win lots of completions in South Africa which led my family and I, to decide Europe was where I needed to head. I spent 4 or 5 seasons in the UK before getting the chance to work and ride for Ludger Beerbaum, living in Germany for 9 years before moving to Belgium to start my own business, where I have settled in our home with my fiancé Georgina Harvey in Valkenswaard. We are building our own equestrian facility.

Living in 4 different countries in Europe has been very interesting - from great food to disorganised civil servants and expensive accounts. I hate the winters here so even though I have been away from home for 13 years now, I still have a bit of South Africa left in me. A tip for any future South African riders heading abroad – don’t get your truck licence as you will get yourself very long days and nights driving through Europe and panicking whilst navigating your way through the Parisian traffic in a 26 ton truck.

My greatest achievements has been to represent South Africa at two World Championships and getting in the final, finishing 26th.

Being placed and winning World Cups in Europe, been placed in Global Champions Tours, winning and being placed in Grand Prix all around the world from Europe to Asia to the United States .

Once our property is completed I can focus solely on the sport again. At the moment we are acquiring very good young horses to set up for the future. My goals and dreams are to run a sustainable business but still compete at the highest level in the sport with quality horses doing it MY WAY as I love the horses.

And of course an Olympic gold medal in Tokyo would hurt either.
