MEWLA RALLY 2016 Top Award for Mewla Rally In 2016 the Old Forge Garage Mewla was awarded the best event in the BTRDA MSA Asphalt Championship finishing ahead of rallies such as the Manx and rallies in Ireland. Well the rave struck again and they failed to spoil our days sport and thanks to everyone who worked tirelessly in the morning to sort out Re-Routes etc. Despite all the problems we were only 30 minutes late finishing and completed all the stages. With the sad news that the BTRDA MSA Asphalt Championship will not be running in 2017, we feel that the event needs a change so Alun & myself have put forward a few new ideas forward for 2017 which will be discussed at the next Mewla meeting on the 17th January at the Lamb & Flag Inn, Rhayader starting 7:30pm Any new members wishing to join this talented committee please come along. I would also like to thank Andrew Hail who has been the BTRDA MSA Asphalt Championship Co-Ordinator for the last 21 years, on behalf of the Mewla we would like to thank him for his help and support over the years, and wish him a happy retirement. I would also like to say a BIG thank you to Keith & Catriona who have decided to finish as Entries Secretaries after about 50 years (I think, how old is he?). I’m glad they are going to remain on the Mewla committee as I have new jobs for them—Dog Poo Picker Uppers on the showground. Gloves, Buckets, Printed T-Shirts and hats will be provided by myself. That’s it for now. Brian Jones Joint Grumpy Clerk of the Course.

At the Charity Presentation in February we gave away £3,250 to charity. The Mewla and Powys Lanes raised £1,500 for Llanwrtyd Co-Responders Replacement Vehicle, which was unveiled in September. As well as £1,000 to Wales Air Ambulance. The Powys Lanes also gave £750 to the Macmillan Renton Unit in Hereford.

The Charity Presentation will take place Feb 25th for 7:30pm at the Belle Vue, Llanwrtyd Wells. All members who helped with the events are welcome, but need to book their place with Sophie Harper 8

2016 D.G Jones Agri Ltd Powys Lanes What can we say another year, another event. 2016 seemed to be the most popular yet, with a number of entries coming thick and fast after opening we decided to increase the number of entries to 80 – no easy task as we had to secure the consent of the 95 entrants already entered. In the month leading to the event there was relatively fewer issues, particularly from residents along the route while PR’ing, and other parts of the planning process, except the usual last minute dash to get things done and comments on things that need to change. Come Friday night it feels like we have the event ready to run. Saturday – runs smoothly, we have some minor issues with parking due to the Hereford Showground Stages, so we need to work on this for 2017. Code boards, ready, control boards, ready (once cleaned for the second time this year), Clocks, ready (well they are on the showground, just need collecting), paperwork, ready. Ready to run? Yes, all seems to be flowing nicely, no issues at signing on, or scrutineering, drivers briefing passes, and the competitors begin to collect their route. As the cars begin their night on the road I and Emma head off across the car park to my car, (which I swear was parked the other way round, I later found out it was. Someone borrowed my keys to get something from the car, they decided to park it in the masters row. It had to later be moved as it was in the way) After defrosting the car we headed to Sennybridge hoping that a) It would be open, b) the pumps would keep working. Arriving early we joined Graham, his nephew, Roger and Twm for a coffee, we were shortly followed by the results team, well Ian and Gareth, they lost Alun, who turned up some 20 minutes later – his whereabouts? Unknown, we decided not to ask. Soon the competitors begin to arrive, many of them enjoying the first half, enjoying the route and the challenge, some felt the lack of diagrams on this year’s event made it one of the best rounds – something else to note for 2017. After some fuel and the usual energy drink (If it actually gives you wings, is it cheating?) the second half proved more interesting for competitors returning to traditional Powys Lanes roads instead of the new areas used in the first half. Once we get to the finish a happy atmosphere has started to develop, everyone seems to have enjoyed the event and as such there were no protests and few queries so the results were declared final, and the awards presentation commenced. Full results can be found on the Powys Lanes section of the Epynt MC website. So all in all any problems? Apart from the very cold conditions, no – not even the bear. Now all that is left is to say a big thank you to everyone on the committee, and everyone who has helped and supported on this year’s event – including our sponsor for a fifth year – Gerwyn Jones of D.G Jones Agri Ltd, a partnership we hope continues long into the future. For anyone who is interested we are always looking for new people to join our band of dedicated people who organise the event, if you’re interested keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for the next meeting date. 2016 Auto Test Championship Round-Up Two years ago the auto-test championship was suspended due to a lack of entries but thanks to a lot of hard work and promotion by many members this years championship was excellent, 5 rounds were planned but an extra round was put on due to a big rise in entries. 6 events 106 entries (an average of 18 per round) 35 entered in the Front Wheel Drive Class (FWD) 33 in the Standard Production Class (STD) 34 in the Novice Class 7 in the Rear Wheel Drive Class (RWD) And 2 Ladies entered. In a close FWD class Ceri Davies finished just ahead of Ryan Davies and Ben Maggs. Morian Peters was also on course for the title but a damaged leg before the last round put paid to that. In the Novice class Ben Maggs took the title ahead of Neil Wozencraft so moves out for 2017. It was the same pair who won the STD Class ahead of Ben Davies who finished 3rd. Joint first in the RWD class were David Evans in his BMW and Graham Davies in a Blue Sunbeam. The ladies class was won by Nellie Burroughs. Thanks to everyone who helped timekeeping, marshalling, and results and also our landowners for the use of the venues. Cameron Davies Returns to Rallying in Style! After a very successful year Circuit Racing in 2015 with a number of podium wins and Rookie of the Year title, Epynt Motor Club member Cameron Davies from Llandovery returned to rallying in the BTRDA Rally Championship, entering the one make championship - Fiesta ST Trophy. By the time he acquired his ST the first round, Cambrian Rally, had passed. Starting from a disadvantage the Malcolm Wilson Rally was the first round for Cameron and new Co-Driver; Lee Taylor. On arriving at Cockermouth while unloading the car off the trailer the clutch packed in! After a lot of phone calls and help from P & R Benn a clutch was sourced and fitted in time for scrutineering, the rally was a success with Cameron and Lee successfully bonding and winning the ST Trophy class, finishing 22nd overall out of the 111 starters. The Somerset Stages Rally was next which was unique in the championship as it had both gravel and tarmac stages. Cameron immediately took the lead in the ST Trophy class, when it came to the tarmac stages he pulled a staggering 25 seconds over 7 miles from his nearest rival. Cameron and Lee securing their second win of the year. Next was the Plains Rally based in Welshpool, Cameron was fastest on all 7 stages, winning the ST Trophy class by 53 seconds. Round 4 was the Carlisle stages which was very tough on the car, sustaining suspension and sump guard damage but Cameron expertly drove securing another class win by 1 minute and 43 seconds. The Nicky Grist Stages in Builth Wells was next, Cameron and Lee got off to a bad start, the suspension problem from Carlisle wasn’t resolved and the team was lent a suspension strut for the event, but once fitted the car they found the height adjustment was seized so the only option was to lower the other side to match. This resulted in being late at MC1 and occurring a 1 minute penalty. Stage 1 added to the days problems with the car cutting out losing valuable time. Taking stock of the situation Cameron and Lee got stuck into the challenge ahead and arrived back at the finish with another first in class position in the championship. To start the day 1 minute behind his rivals then gaining that minute back and winning by a further 6 seconds is proof of how well Cameron and Lee work together. With the best 6 rounds of 8 to count the 7th round, Woodpecker Rally in Ludlow was next, the team had calculated that Cameron had to finish in the top 5 of his class to win the championship. Setting off he led the way again driving with the championship in mind ensuring he got to the finish, securing 2nd in class - winning The Fiesta ST Trophy Championship outright with 1 round spare. A fantastic result especially after a years absent from rallying. After a successful season winning the Fiesta ST Trophy Championship, Cameron was rewarded with the chance of a life time to prove himself over a two-day assessment at M-Sport’s headquarters. This included physical and mental tests before one of M-Sport’s World Rally Team drivers scrutinised skills behind the wheel of a Ford Fiesta R2. The DMack Drive shootout took place in early December with selected drivers from around the world attending, at the end of the assessment Cameron was runner up narrowly missing out on winning due to his lack of European experience. Cameron and his Team are now busy planning for 2017 - So watch this space!!! facebook.com/CameronDaviesRally 16

Nav Scatter Championship What a year, one of the best yet! Six excellent events, a big rise in entries and good social nights with a lot of competition. The competition was so close in the experts that it was all decided on the final round with 3 drivers and 3 navigators all in with a chance of winning. The expert drivers class was won by Ben Davies despite him using a novice navigator for half of the year, finishing 3 points behind was Brian Jones in the Shogun one point behind was Jamie Pickup and finishing 4th was last years championship winner Twm Prosser in his 200HP 4X4. In the navigators championship only 1 point covered the top 3. Jon Hawkins took the title, well deserved considering that he did the September Nav Scatter on his own. Joint 2nd were Kate Jones and Ceri Davies (although Ceri has new glasses so look out in 2017). Finishing 3rd was club chairman Alun Probert who was navigating for novice Driver Leighton Campbell. In the Novice Class we had 20 Drivers and 13 Navigators. For the drivers Rob Price took an easy win after a few years away from the sport, Leighton Campbell finished 2nd in his 1st year in the sport. Finishing 3rd for the drivers was Jordan Gullick who scored on 4 rounds. The Navigators class was won by Kieran Price who is only 16 years of age and as well as Ellie Williams these two are the latest in the line of up and coming navigators in Epynt Motor Club. Runner up navigator was Matt Price while Rhys Lewis finished 3rd, a pity he moved away and missed the end of the season as a close finish with Kieran was definitely on. So that is it. A big thanks to Dan, Sophie and Lynne for helping the organisers with signing on, ETC. Sorry if I missed anyone. So it all starts again on January 12th 2017 at Newbridge-OnWye. Brian Jones Competition Secretary No, it’s not Ordinance Survey revising a map, it’s just some Navscatter Plotting! 18
