A NOTE FROM JOSEPHINE LEE As 2012 draws to a close, I look back in awe at what Chicago Children’s Choir has been able to accomplish. While we cherish the founding principles of social justice and musical excellence that have always been at the core of our mission, the Choir has evolved with the changing world and the children it serves. What we are trying to achieve over the long term, after all, goes beyond the fundamentals of music education. If creativity is the currency of the 21st century, Chicago Children’s Choir is investing in the future by creating a platform for our children to freely converse and an environment that celebrates the beauty of their unique voices. Through diverse repertoire, innovative projects, and collaborations, the Choir is changing expectations about what children can accomplish when they share their voices – and their emotions – with the world. In our communities, we are creating a safe haven where children can express themselves and learn important life lessons about respect, love, compassion, discipline, work ethic, and social responsibility. Events like the Target Community Concert Series, Paint the Town Red Arts Education Day, the Black History Month Concert Series, and countless other annual performances nurture the soul and connect us with our communities, both socially and emotionally. The impact of these experiences is difficult to measure in test scores or grades, but they are critical to fostering a society of socially conscious citizens. We measure our success by the growing number of children impacted by our programs and the diverse audience members we are able to touch during performances both here and abroad. To start the 2011-2012 program year, Mayor Rahm Emanuel invited the Concert Choir to give a featured performance for President of South Korea Lee Myung-Bak during his historic visit to Chicago in October. That same month, the Choir held its first-ever Community Sing, which brought hundreds of Chicagoans to Navy Pier for a free performance and sing-along featuring nearly 600 singers. An ensemble of children from the Neighborhood Choir Programs took their talents to the stage of the Civic Opera House, where they performed as the children’s choir in Boris Godunov, and to Symphony Center for a renewed collaboration with Maestro Riccardo Muti and the CSO for performances of Carmina Burana. During the NATO Summit in May, Chicago truly became a microcosm of the world – and Chicago Children’s Choir a reflection of it – with a private performance for the delegates and their spouses at a dinner hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama. In June, the Concert Choir closed the year’s program activities with a multi-city tour in Italy, where they were received by capacity audiences in venues ranging from community music schools to the world-class Ravenna Festival. Wherever the Choir travels, the sound of children from every race, religion, and socioeconomic background joined in harmony reminds us that we are all connected by a universal language - music. We are so grateful to all of our donors who believe in our mission and are investing in our children’s future by making all of these experiences possible. Thank you for supporting the Choir as we peacefully unite the world through the power of song. All the best,

JOSEPHINE LEE President & Artistic Director
