BUSINESS Rolls-Royce to sell luxury automobiles in Cambodia Associated Press

PHNOM PENH — Fabled luxury car maker Rolls-Royce will soon be marketing its goods in one of the world’s poorest countries: Cambodia. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars announced Monday that it has joined with a Cambodian business partner to open a showroom in the Cambodian capital next month. Rolls-Royce Asia-Pacific regional manager Paul Harris said his company signed a deal with HGB Group Co., Ltd. because it believed demand would grow along with Cambodia’s economy. Cambodia’s average per capita annual income, according to the World Bank, is just over $1,000, a bit less than one-half of 1 percent of the cost of the cheapest Rolls-Royce. However, a small but wealthy elite lives in the capital of the mostly rural nation, and it is not unusual to see various models of high-end Lexus automobiles passing by pedicabs in the city’s dusty streets. Harris said five Rolls-Royces have been sold in Cambodia since 2005. “Nobody would believe that such a luxury car would come to Cambodia,” said Minister for Industry and Handcrafts Cham Prasidh, who was present for the announcement. Cheaper Japanese models still dominate the market, but the upgrading of roads — which had suffered from war and neglect — and the rise in people’s living standards mean other car manufacturers from various countries are now entering the Cambodian market, he said.

German firm to set up in joint Korean Kaesong complex

SEOUL - South Korea on Tuesday said it had green-lighted a German firm supplying industrial needles to set up as the first foreign company in the Kaesong joint industrial zone run with North Korea. Groz-Beckert will provide its needles to South Korean firms operating in the Kaesong complex, which opened in 2004 as a rare symbol of cross-border cooperation, the South’s unification ministry said. “It will be the first foreign company to do business there, although its office is not a manufacturing facility,” a ministry official told AFP. The office will be manned by

two North Korean workers and several staff from Groz-Beckert’s branch in South Korea. Kaesong, which lies 10 kilometres (six miles) on the North Korean side of the border, employs more than 50,000 North Koreans in around 120 South Korean light industrial firms. Pyongyang shut down the complex in April last year by withdrawing its workforce as military ten-

sions surged in the wake of North Korea’s third nuclear test. It re-opened five months later but talks on reforming the way Kaesong is managed have shown little progress. South Korea has been pushing hard for overseas involvement in the zone, believing the presence of foreign firms would make it harder for Pyongyang to shut down the complex in the future.

Bali rabies-free program attempted all this time seems to still leave a number of concerns. It happens because the number of bite cases by rabies-carrier animals remains very high.

TABANAN - Bali rabies-free program attempted all this time seems to still leave a number of concerns. It happens because the number of bite cases by rabies-carrier animals remains very high. In Tabanan, until April 2014, the total bite case reached 2,046 incidents. Of this amount, 582 victims were recorded not to get anti-rabies vaccine (VAR). “Not all cases of dog bites should be given anti-rabies vaccine, but depends on the condition of the dog,” explained the Head of Tabanan Health Agency, Nyoman Suratmika. He described that most bite cases were caused by stray dogs. On that account, they were quite risky to trigger rabies. Even, the average number of bite case could reach 15 to 20 cases per day. According to him, if there were dog bite victims, at least they needed three shots of anti-rabies vaccine. Firstly, they were given two shots, another shot on the seventh day and the last shot on the 21st day. For these actions, it was required four ampoules of anti-rabies vaccine. Further, he said the bite cases by the rabies-carrier animal were found in some rabies treatment centers, such as at rabies center of Tabanan Hospital and six Community Health Centers that provided inpatient anti-

rabies vaccine. Two of them were in Penebel and Baturiti. The dog bite cases recorded were only those reported by victims. Predictably, there were many similar cases that were not reported. Based on the data released by the Tabanan Health Agency, the dog bite cases continued to rise every month since the outbreak in 2008. A total of 7,102 incidents occurred in 2011, rose to 7,374 incidents (2012) and declined to only 6,042 incidents (2013), and until April 2014 it was recorded to reach 2,046 incidents. “In terms of the detailed data, through the years the amount always lies in the range of 500-600 cases every month,” he said. The cases of positive rabies dog bite on human in Tabanan last appeared when Balinese Hindus celebrated Ngembak Geni (the day after Nyepi) experienced by resident at Sekartaji hamlet, Sesandan village early April. The Livestock Agency team eventually moved quickly by performing mass vaccination as well as the elimination of stray dogs, especially those having a history of contact with dogs declared positive to rabies in accordance with the SOPs. Pursuant to the rules, the rabies handling should be expedited because it had something to do with the use of anti-rabies serum or antirabies vaccine. (kmb28)
