WEEK 1: COI TOURNAMENT: VANGUARD, LEWIS-CLARK STATE, WILLIAM JESSUP

2012 SEASON PREVIEW Barrett Henderson EOU Assistant Athletic Director, Media Relations LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University volleyball team returns to the court in the annual Alumni match Saturday, after an unforgettable year last season. The Mountaineers were one spot away from the program’s first ever trip to the NAIA National Tournament. EOU finished with its most ever Cascade Conference wins in a single season (15), and ended third in the CCC standings. This all coming after Eastern tragically lost its head coach just weeks before the season. Kaki Morehead returned to lead the Mountaineers, who opened the season 0-6, before reeling off nine straight wins, including a sweep over No. 12 Southern Oregon. EOU closed the season with back-to-back five set losses to Southern, with the latest coming in the CCC tournament semifinals. Eastern Oregon dropped all five of the five-set matches it played in last year. Eight Mountaineers return in 2012, including four seniors and plenty of key match experience. This season, EOU has a pair of All-Conference performers that are led by last season’s conference Coach of the Year selection. KEY RETURNERS In her first season as a Mountaineer, Rebecca Haight was named the Cascade Collegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year. She had 213 kills last year in 68 sets, an average of 3.13 kills per set. The junior had a hitting percentage of .318. She was third in the conference in hitting percentage and kills per set. The Longview, Wash. native recorded a season-high 21 kills at then-ranked No. 6 College of Idaho. She had 25 digs against College of Idaho as well. Kaitlyn Duncan became the queen of digs last season at EOU. She broke the school’s all-time career digs record in 2011, and became only the second Mountaineer to cross the 1,000-dig plateau in a career. The Prineville, Ore. native has amassed 1,206 digs in three seasons. Stefani Sorensen had a breakout freshman season last year. The Camas, Wash. native was eighth in the conference in hitting percentage (.254) and kills per set (2.8). She had 208 kills in her first year as a Mountaineer. Coach Morehead adds Alisha Crane and Taylor Stewart to key returners in 2012. Crane returns for her senior season after playing in all 28 matches, and starting in 24. The Glenns Ferry, Idaho native, finished with 197 kills in 2011,

2012 EOU VOLLEYBALL NOTEBOOK

but led EOU with 94 total blocks. In her sophomore season, Stewart played in 26 matches totaling 142 kills and 97 assists.

after totaling 943 sets in 2011.

KEY LOSSES

“I look forward to working with Karly as our setter and think she make an impact right away,” Morehead said.

The Mountaineers have to replace one of the best players in program history after the departure of Jessica Lea to graduation. Lea was named third team Tachikara-NAIA All-American last season after she had a hitting percentage of .289 with a total of 279 kills. Lea hitting percentage and kill total were each fifth in the conference. She averaged 2.8 kills per set.

Dietrich, Idaho native, Jessica Perron, was named All-State for three years at Dietrich High School. The 5-8 freshman setter was AllConference and All-Academic all four of her high school seasons. Perron guided Dietrich to IHSAA state tournament each of the past four years, including a pair of trips to the state title match.

Lea recorded eight triple doubles last season; no other player in the CCC had one triple double in 2011. She had 546 assists last year which was seventh in the conference. Lea had an average of 5.5 per set which was 10th in the conference. She was ninth in the conference in total blocks with 68. And, Lea was 10th in the CCC, in total digs with 267.

“Jess is a great addition to our program and will be competitive for us right away,” Morehead said. “She was a high school standout, First Team All-State and All-League, just a great player.”

In her career, Lea had 2,073 assists (first in school history), .275 hitting percentage (first in school history), 986 kills (second in school history), 2610 attack attempts (second in school history), 932 digs (fourth in school history), 224 total blocks (fourth in school history), and 67 service aces (fifth in school history). Lea’s 380 sets played in a career are first in school history and she was four matches shy of most matches played in school history. Another graduated player, Emily Sampson, leaves the program after totaling 589 assists last year, which was sixth in the conference. She averaged 5.77 assists per set. Sampson is third all-time in assists in career in EOU history with 1,344. Katie Showers will not be returning for her senior season. In her junior season, Showers had 178 kills, and was eighth in the conference with 82 blocks.

Shawna Smith, a 5-9 libero from Longview, Wash., was another high school standout. Smith was named Greater St. Helens 2A League MVP this fall after leading Mark Morris to an undefeated regular season in 2011. Over her four-year career, she accumulated 705 service points, 148 aces, 525 kills and 803 digs. “Shawna will be a great asset to us in the future as we will look to her to take over our defense and back row in the years to come,” Morehead said. Eastern welcomes, Kenzie Kaba, a 6-0 Middle Hitter from Boise, Idaho. Kaba was a IHSAA Class 5A First Team All-State performer in 2011. She was also named SIC All-Conference at Mountain View High School. Irene Walters rejoins the Mountaineers in 2012 after not participating in 2011. The incoming junior, played and started in all 24 matches during the 2010 season. She was second on the team with 231 kills, while adding 222 digs. SCHEDULE

KEY NEWCOMERS The Mountaineers have seven additions to the 2012 roster. K.C. Loper, yet another product out of Prineville, Ore., transfers to Eastern after spending last season at NCAA Div. 2, Arkansas Tech. Loper, a 5-10 Middle Hitter, will be a sophomore this season. “We look forward to great things from K.C. this season and think she will make an impact on the floor right away,” Morehead said. Karly Stack, a native of Asquith, Saskatchewan, comes to EOU after being named Mon-Dak All-Conference, and All-Region 13 last year at Williston State College. At Williston State, Stack, a 5-9 junior, averaged 9.15 assists per set,

The 2012 slate features a pack of Frontier Conference opponents and the ever-tough CCC schedule. Eastern opens the season in Caldwell, Idaho, at The College of Idaho tournament. There, the Mountaineers will face a trio of quality opponents. EOU begins the 2012 season Aug. 17, against last year’s No. 14-ranked team in the country, Vanguard (Calif.). The Lions went 23-14 last season, that included a thrilling five-set win over the Mountaineers very early in the season. Eastern Oregon and Vanguard met at the Azusa Pacific Cougar Classic in 2011, and after falling behind two sets to none to begin the match, EOU rallied to win the next two sets, but fell in the fifth set.
