We have brought in a number of quality freshmen who will compliment our returning group. We will be relying on our strong group of upperclassmen to lead the way. After losing 4-year player Kyle Miller, we will be looking for leaders to step up and fill her shoes. After the waqy we ended the season last year excitment is high and the team is ready to work hard to compete with the top conference teams. THE SERIES * The last time EOU played Westminister was in 2006 where they deteated the Griffins 68-64 * Eastern has only played Westminister five times, EOU leading the series 5-1 * Westminister has only scored 366 points agains the Mountaineers. * The Mountaineers first played Whitman during their 1981-82 season where they defeated the Athletics 71-67. * EOU leads the series 23-19 * The Mountaineers have scored a total of 2921 points in the 42 games against Whitman. * EOU last played the Athletics during their 2009-10 season where they split games. QUICK HITS * EOU swept New Hope Christian in their first weekend out. * The Mountaineers ended their season in the NAIA Div. 2 National Tournament quarterfinals, the furthest the program has ever advanced in the national tournament * The Mountaineers have been ranked #10 in NAIA Div. 2 in their pre-season coach’s poll * During the 2011-12 season, Eastern moved to No. 8 in the country. ABOUT THE GRIFFINS

The Westminster College women’s basketball team received a No. 5 ranking in the 2012-13 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll. The No. 5 ranking is the highest for a Westminster team in school history. The Griffins received a No. 8 national ranking on three occasions during the 2010-11 season to establish a school-best. Westminster returns nine players from a team that finished 23-9 last season. The Griffins are in the Frontier Conference and started their season with a 2-1 record, defeating #12 Biola (55-45). ABOUT THE ATHLETICS This will be Whitman’s second weekend out. Their first weekend in California they were 0-0 against University of La Verne and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Athletics are a part of the Northwest Conference and were 16-10 during their 2011-12 season. They will be looking to increase their win record against EOU as the Mountaineers lead the series 23-19.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE Just one week remains before conference games start and the Cascade Conference will have a busy holiday weekend as they play some familiar non-conference foes. Southern Oregon plays host to the Flagship Inn Classic, which will also feature Oregon Tech, as the Raiders welcome Lewis-Clark State, Simpson and Puget Sound to Ashland. Caldwell will be the site for two non-conferenc games as Eastern Oregon faces Westminster in a neutral-site contest with the Yotes taking on the Griffins the next day. Corban hosts the Capital City Classic while Evergreen

LAST TIME OUT

Dec. 12, 2009 WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team watched an 11-point halftime lead slip away in the second half, before falling at Whitman College, 56-52. The NCAA Div. 3 Missionaries trailed the entire first half to the Mountaineers, but crawled back into the game in the second half despite shooting just 33 percent from the field in the game. However, Whitman outrebounded EOU 40-27. Salena Leavitt led the Mountaineers with 12 points, and Samantha Flett and Ashlee Michelson each scored 11 points. Eastern had a chance to tie the score at 54 with 1.7 seconds remaining in regulation, but missed a pair of free throws. EOU made eight of its 16 free throw attempts. Eastern Oregon made 50 percent of its shots from the field in the first half, but were held to 5 of 17 shooting in the second half. EOU shot 66 percent from behind the perimeter. This was a rematch of a meeting won by the Mountaineers on Nov. 28 at the Lady ‘Yote Classic in Caldwell, Idaho, 62-53. Saturday the Missionaries were paced by Kelly Peterson’s 14 points and 13 rebounds. Michelle Krall and Mary Madden each added 13 points, and Hilary White had 10 points. Eastern Oregon hosts No. 11 Southern Oregon Friday in the Cascade Collegiate Conference home opener. The Raiders currently sit atop the league standings and have won three straight over the Mountaineers.

WEEK FIVE: WESTMINISTER & WHITMAN EOU WINS HOME OPENER La Grande, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon Women’s Basketball team defeated New Hope Christian College 67-50, in their home opener Friday night at Quinn Coliseum. The Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. It wasn’t until the 13:15 minute mark and a 3-pointer by Lea Lolohea that New Hope was able to get on the scoreboard making the game 12-3.

Eastern’s Projected Starters

Guard 21 Nicole Redd JR 5-5 Lewiston, Idaho Lewiston HS

Forward 32 Jorie Freeman SR 6-2 Richland Wash. Columbia Basin CC

Eastern went into the locker room at half up 40-13. In the second half New Hope was able to cut Easters’ lead to 16, but Easters’ intensity proved to be too much to handle. “I was excited to see the intensity that the team played with. Jorie had an outstanding performance and really lead the team tonight. We need to continue to work hard and improve on the little things,” coach Weissenfluh added.

Guard 34 Brooke Randall SR 5-7 Wenatchee, Wash. Spokane Falls CC

Guard 14 Korrie Bourn SR 5-10 Cheyney, Wash. Cheyney HS

Forward 33 Chayla Jones SR 5-10 Menan, Idaho W. Wyoming CC

Jorie Freeman led the mountaineers with 15 points, 13 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocked shots. Nichole Redd and Korrie Bourn also added 10 and 7 respectively. New Hope was lead by Lea Lolohea’s 11 points and 5 rebounds. Deanna Tupai and Chelsea Dyson each added 9 points. Eastern will face New Hope Christian College again tomorrow night in Quinn Coliseum. EOU WOMEN RANK TOP 10 NATIONALLY After a record-breaking season last year, which included an Elite 8 appearance in the National Tournament the Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team begins the 2012-13 season at No. 10 in NAIA Div. 2. For the second season in a row EOU has appeared in the national preseason Top 25 poll. Last year Eastern started out in the 23rd spot and climbed all the way to No. 8. The Mountaineers have high expectations this year. Just last week EOU was picked in the preseason coaches’ poll to win their Conference, receiving 9 out of 10 first place votes. Other Cascade Collegiate Conference teams making the Top 25 include, Corban University, as they enter the season at No. 14. Warner Pacific received 28 votes and College of Idaho received 46 points to tie for the final 25th spot. The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The first regular-season poll will be announced on Nov. 26
