February 10, 2012 CALDWELL, Idaho – The Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team keeps the I-84 Cup in La Grande with a 78-60 win over The College of Idaho Friday. With the victory, the Mountaineers (16-9, 9-7 Cascade Collegiate Conference) remain in the hunt for their fifth consecutive season with a home postseason game. With two games left in the regular season, EOU has a half-game lead on Southern Oregon for fourth place in the conference standings. The top four teams in the CCC host first round games in the conference tournament. Eastern had four double-digit scorers Friday, led by Travares Peterson’s game-high 19 points. The senior was 6-of-7 from the field and he made all six of his free-throw attempts. Jamar Johnson added 18 points, Anthony Brown finished with 17 points, and Trent Roos had 11 points. Johnson had a team-high eight rebounds and JaMier Morris threw a game-high six assists. The Mountaineers were 48 percent from the field in the game. EOU made 11 of its 23 threepointers and 19 of its 23 free-throw attempts. Eastern Oregon made seven shots from behind the arc in the first half. Eastern got a Peterson dunk and a Johnson three-pointer in a 10-0 run early in the contest to build a 10-2 lead. The C of I would close within 16-14 on a Zach Peterson triple, but a Johnson three-pointer extended the lead to 30-19, as EOU took a 41-30 lead to the locker room.

Johnson and Brown each hit three-pointers, with an alley-oop dunk by Peterson capping an 8-0 run, as the visitors extended the lead to 53-35 with 15:52 remaining. The Coyotes (9-18, 4-12) would chip away at the lead, cutting the margin to 66-56 on a Krispin Banks bucket with four minutes to play, but could not get closer.

Banks led the Yotes with 18 points and 11 rebounds - the first double-double by a Coyote this season, with Ben Van Lith adding 10 points. Matt Ballenger recorded four steals. The C of I was 39 percent from the field, 3-of-17 from three-point range, and 9-for-15 from the free-throw line.
