FIRM BACKGROUND

In 1981, after working for architectural firms in Chicago, New York, and Lexington, Rick Ekhoff and Paul Ochenkoski founded the firm that is now known as EOP. Richard Polk joined the firm shortly afterwards and accepted a partnership position in 1989. Together, the three established a cultural foundation and core philosophy focused upon design and technical excellence. These values combined with client diversification, an unwavering commitment to client service, and a passion for creative challenges have fostered our successes and defined our reputation for outstanding practice within the architectural and interior design marketplace. In 2006, the EOP partnership was expanded to include architect Brent Bruner and interior designer Chris Estes.

The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy/ Biological Pharmaceutical Complex consists of approximately 28,000 m2 of space on seven levels, including a full basement and a mechanical penthouse. Two 220-seat lecture halls, teaching lab suites, patient assessment and interaction suites and a variety of other classroom types are included.

HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER NEW INSTRUCTIONAL BUILDING & RENOVATION

EOP is working with the University of Louisville to provide design services for a new Health Sciences Center Instructional Building and renovation of an adjacent library and academic space. The facility will include a medical library, two 220-seat lecture halls, 10 small group study rooms, simulation suites, patient clinic and gross anatomy lab.

The Main + Rose project is a mixed-use development, which includes both commercial and residential components. The design includes 2,600m2 of street level retail space, a large concealed parking garage, a rooftop garden, and 96 residential loft condos on floors two through four. These lofts range in size from 70m2 to approximately 280m2.

The exterior aesthetic of Urban Active at Polaris relies on the combination of four varying building materials: glass, wood, metal, and brick. The basic form of the building consists of a glass box that is wrapped by solid folded planes.

Urban Active Fitness at Legacy Village, located in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, was conceived as an adaptive reuse of a vacant building that previously housed a home improvement store. This project is a vibrant addition to the area’s local restaurant, grocery store, and shopping district.

URBAN ACTIVE FITNESS AT TAYLORSVILLE ROAD

Urban Active at Taylorsville Road, located just outside Louisville, Kentucky, is the result of an adaptive reuse project, which converted a vacant grocery store into a cutting-edge fitness facility. One of the most dramatic elements of the transformation is the addition of the exterior glass façade. This skin, constructed of an aluminum curtain wall, allows natural light to fill the club, while allowing the energy and activity of the interior space visibility from the exterior.

A landmark event for Kentucky, the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games were attended by over 400,000 people from more than 40 nations. The project included designing a 30,000-seat arena for the Games that also had to function as a 7,500seat all-weather arena for ongoing legacy events after the Games.

Southland desired a contemporary design that is welcoming, inspirational and transformational. The 13,000m2 vacant former shopping mall is being renovated into educational spaces. Adjacent is a 4,600m2 addition housing a 2,800-seat worship center. The project includes the redevelopment of the 30-acre campus including a plaza, water feature and parking for 1,800 vehicles.

This adaptive reuse provided the exciting challenge of transforming a manufacturing plant into a stimulating, functional work environment for the KCTCS administrative staff. The design introduces volumes of natural light into the facility in an open office landscape environment.

Boone Tavern was built in 1909 and has been a continually operating hotel and restaurant for the last 100 years. EOP provided design services for the exterior and interior renovation of the historic tavern located at College Square on Berea College’s campus. Highlights of the renovation include the addition of a double porch on the exterior of the building, as well as interior renovations throughout the entire facility. Boone Tavern attained LEED GOLD certification and is the first LEED certified hotel in Kentucky.

FRENCH QUARTER INN & SUITES LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY

EOP Architects provided design services for this 156-suite hotel. Originally known as The French Quarter Inn, the hotel is now operated by Four Points Sheraton. Amenities include a five-story atrium, convention/meeting facilities, a full service restaurant and a swimming pool.

EOP Architects provided design services for a new 12,000 sf terminal building at the Somerset / Pulaski County Airport. The single-story building houses administrative offices for the airport and airport board, and also contains space for a car rental kiosk, a restaurant, and a commercial airline gate area to accommodate 50 passengers.

The project consisted of the adaptive re-use and renovation of an existing historical medical office building into a luxury suite hotel and restaurant. The project required the addition of a third floor area and extensive interior and exterior renovation and restoration.

EOP created a singular loft out of a windowless area of an existing 1940’s warehouse originally built to house a wholesale tobacco company. In 2008, a developer began converting the building into six condominiums. EOP’s design is for what would have been two of the units located at the rear of the building.

Located in the Casa Marina area of Key West, the clients wanted a house that hinted upon the traditional island architecture yet with a more minimalist and modern vocabulary. The result was a play on bold forms, planes and color where the sunlight and shadows are providing a natural detailing to the surfaces and textures.

His project involvement begins with the initial programming phase and continues through construction completion. Brent joined EOP in 2001 and became a principal in 2006. Chris serves as EOP’s director for the interior design studio. Since joining the firm in 1998, his efforts have been focused on ensuring that the design commitment of EOP is executed appropriately with respect to the interior environments of all projects. Chris’ client base during his tenure with the firm is widely diversified and includes project types for retail, hospitality, commercial, corporate, education and many others. Chris was an instrumental project team member during the development of the firm’s AIA awardwinning projects: the Transportation Cabinet Office Building in Frankfort, Shorty’s The Urban Market, and the state’s first LEED-certified building, Berea College’s Lincoln Hall.
