The late 2023 into 2024 season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting ever for high-end automotive enthusiasts. With hot new cars from the most famous sports and luxury marques set to roll off production lines—in limited numbers, natch—there’s never been a better time to get behind the wheel. Here are our six favorites, and they’re all ready to rip with loads of sporty style, so get your checkbook ready because order books will be filling up fast.

The legendary British luxury brand’s first-ever fullyelectric car, Spectre is set to revolutionize the off-thecharts EV space. Rolls is calling it the “world’s first ultraluxury electric super coupé”; and despite the trailblazing nature of Spectre, they’re more than pleased to point out that marque cofounder Charles Stewart Rolls touted the appeal of electric cars as early as 1900. Billed as the “spiritual successor” of the Phantom Coupé, Spectre is set to take its place among the brand’s iconic model monikers. While final power, acceleration and range figures for the aluminum-bodied beast are “still being refined” as Rolls puts it, Spectre is expected to do 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds, top out at 155 mph, offer offer 900 Nm of torque, and be capable of clocking 260 miles on a single charge. “Spectre possesses all the qualities that have secured the Rolls-Royce legend,” notes Rolls-Royce Motor Cars CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös, who calls it nothing short of “the most perfect product that RollsRoyce has ever produced…. Silent and powerful, [it] demonstrates how perfectly Rolls-Royce is suited to electrification.” Spectre, he adds, is “perfectly in tune with the sensibilities of our time. It states the direction for the future of our marque and perfectly answers a call from the most discerning individuals in the world to elevate the electric motor car experience, because Spectre is a Rolls-Royce first and an electric car second.” Design inspiration for the car meanwhile came from everything from “haute couture, modernist sculpture, nautical design, and tailoring to contemporary art.” rolls-roycemotorcars.com

ROLLS-ROYCE SPECTRE

ASTON MARTIN DB12 Not to be outdone in the field of world firsts, another ultra-posh British brand, Aston Martin, has just debuted the DB12, dubbed the world’s first “super tourer.” The ultimate evolution of the classic GT, this one 007-worthy to a fault, it’s designed to “deliver a quantum shift and set the benchmark for performance, ultra-luxury and style.” Boasting 671 hp and 800 Nm of torque courtesy of its 4.0 V8 twin-turbo engine, DB12 can do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds with a blistering top speed of 202 mph. This is a decidedly old-school, take-your-hybrid-and-shove-it style grand tourer that doesn’t stand on ceremony. Aston is calling DB12 “the most complete and accomplished DB model in Aston Martin’s history…. blessed with exceptional performance and handling to satisfy and reward the most demanding drivers.” As will be true of all vehicles bearing the hallowed Aston Martin badge, which celebrates its 110th anniversary this year, the DB12’s hallmarks are “prodigious performance and pinpoint dynamics, seamless integration of advanced technologies, and the sublime style and exemplary craftsmanship for which the brand has long been renowned.” Roberto Fedeli, Aston Martin’s Group Chief Technology Officer, calls DB12 a “statement car,” noting, “we have pushed every aspect of this car to be best-in-class. The result is more power and performance than its rivals. Combined with exceptional handling and an exciting soundtrack, it is a car with passion and a truly sporting character. Crucially, thanks to its breadth of capability we have achieved this without compromising refinement, comfort and luxury. Together with our use of industry-leading dynamic control and infotainment systems, DB12 is the start of Aston Martin’s most exciting new era.” astonmartin.com

LA MBORGHINI REVUELTO

Lamborghini has unleashed its long awaited successor to the Aventador with the new Revuelto—and with an insane 1,001 hp (converted from 1015 CV) it will blow everything else off the road. While V12s are by necessity on the way out, the Italian marque has found a way to combine one with three electric motors, thereby paying homage to its lineage while delivering unbeatable power. And the plug-in hybrid Revuelto is a fitting way for Lambo to celebrate its 60th anniversary this year, on the heels of 2022 which was the brand’s best year ever in terms of deliveries, turnover and profitability. Lamborghini Chairman and CEO Stephan Winkelmann declares that, “The new Revuelto is a milestone in the history of Lamborghini, and an important pillar in our Direzione Cor Tauri electrification strategy”—a €1.9 billion, 5-year initiative. "It is a unique and innovative car but at the same time faithful to our DNA: the V12 is an iconic symbol of our super-sports heritage and history. Revuelto was born to break the mold, combining a new 12-cylinder engine with hybrid technology, creating the perfect balance between delivering the emotion that our clients want with the necessity to reduce emissions.” With a bonkers amount of carbon fiber keeping the Revueltos power-to-weight ratio on the eye-popping side, its stats will knock your (Italian made) socks off: 0-62 mph in 2.5 seconds and a top speed of more than 217 mph. An evolution of the Aventador’s futuristic design, it borrows even more aerospace-inspired elements and emphasizes the Y-theme with headlights, taillights, and large side air intakes as well as the center of the dashboard. lamborghini.com

MCLAREN 750S

We’ve all been waiting to see what McLaren’s first move would be under newly-minted CEO, Michael Leiters, who joined the esteemed marque last summer. And by the looks of it the new 750S won’t disappoint. It’s the lightest and most powerful series-production McLaren ever built, with 740 hp, 590 lb-ft. of torque, a 0-60 mph sprint of 2.7 seconds, and a top speed of 206 mph. “When you have a car [like the 720S] recognized by so many drivers as a benchmark, to do something even better you have to examine every detail and really push hard for improvements that raise the bar again,” Leiters notes. “This is what we have done with the new 750S and the lightweight, V8 engine performance and outstanding dynamic abilities combine to deliver a supercar driving experience that hits new heights, with truly exhilarating levels of emotional connection.”

Around 30 percent of the 750S’s components vs. its predecessor the 720S, which had 30 hp less power, are new or improved, making this a truly groundbreaking model for McLaren. Priced in the U.S. market from a base of $324,000 for the Coupe and $345,000 for the Spider—which is fitted with a retractable hardtop—the 750S is bound to delight collectors and all who appreciate beautiful machines that go really, really fast.

McLaren’s MSO customization department has also been given full reign to create whatever a customer might desire in terms of personalizing the wicked new ride, though the stock TechLux and Performance interior themes are already on the mark. RANGE ROVER SPORT SV It’s the most powerful Range Rover ever built: the new Range Rover Sport SV may not be a supercar like the other thoroughbreds on the list, but this super-SUV can more than hold its own. With 626 hp—a 50 hp boost over the outgoing Range Rover Sport SVR—courtesy of a eco-friendly “mild-hybrid” twin turbo V8, it can do 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds in dynamic-optimized SV Mode with a top speed of 180 mph. An “airflowhoned” exterior includes a redesigned front-end and lower body sides, which while recognizable from the previous generation are unmistakably upgraded, as are the carbon fiber hood and quad tailpipes. Inside you’ll find Range Rover’s first ever Body and Soul Seat, which uses the latest in-car sensory audio technology to provide a truly memorable experience in conjunction with the state-of-the-art entertainment system. And for the first time ever on a production Range Rover there’s a Brembo Carbon Ceramic Brakes option, with exclusive eight-piston SV calipers announcing to all and sundry that this is no ordinary SUV. Nick Collins, Jaguar Land Rover, aka JLR’s Executive Director of Vehicle Programs, calls the new Sport SVR an “optimum blend of supreme performance, unrivaled desirability, capability and refinement. It’s a visceral addition to the Range Rover Sport line-up that powerfully demonstrates the world-class expertise of our high-performance specialists.” For the first year of production New Range Rover Sport SV is only available to select clients, built to order and by invitation, in limited edition SV EDITION ONE specification, “representing a curation of the best feature combinations, colors and finishes.” We could say that competition will be fierce; but every SV EDITION ONE has already been spoken for by a current Range Rover Client, so that battle was over before it began. landrover.com

MASERATI GRANTURISMO FOLGORE Having relaunched the GranTurismo in style last year, Maserati is now gearing up to debut the next-level version of the supercar, in the form of the GranTurismo Folgore, the the first-ever car in Maserati’s 100-year-plus history to feature a 100% electric battery-based powertrain. Mind-bending performance is the result of this impressive endeavor, with the Folgore capable of doing 0 to 62 mph in just 2.7 seconds with a top speed of 202 mph. LS: Let's start at the beginning. Could you provide some insights into Dos Caras' origins?

Lupita: About two decades ago, my husband relocated our family to Mexico from Arizona, where we were residing. The move was prompted by his intention to collaborate on a beverage distribution business, which he successfully established.

During this time, the path of tequila crossed our journey. It had an inexplicable pull, particularly to me. We dove into research and partnered with the owner of a top-notch distillery, producing excellent tequila. This experience reintroduced me to the essence of authentic tequila, which was a stark contrast to the subpar offerings dominating the market.

Our journey with this tequila was arduous since we weren't entrenched in the tequila industry. I once thought of tequila families as an exclusive, impenetrable group in Mexico. Nevertheless, despite the challenges, we pursued our infatuation with it. Our learning curve was steep, encompassing the intricate process of agave cultivation and its transformation into tequila—a truly captivating process.

However, our circumstances took a dire turn. We encountered significant setbacks due to a previous business partnership that left us in a precarious position as we were simultaneously rebranding our tequila. Unexpectedly, this adversity birthed intriguing outcomes. Amidst this turbulence, I questioned how we could craft exceptional new packaging while facing this predicament. An introduction to a different distillery owner revitalized our spirits. Their encouragement to persist and adopt a new name was pivotal.

While on a four-hour journey from Guadalajara to our home in San Miguel, we brainstormed incessantly. Initially my husband dismissed "Dos Caras” in favor of other names. However, its resonance grew on me, and eventually, I stood firm: Dos Caras it is. Our packaging specialist received this decision with enthusiasm, confirming our choice.

Subsequently, we parted ways with the former distillery and connected with the new distiller—a gracious individual. From that juncture, Dos Caras took on a life of its own, as though it possessed a distinct spirit. Although our new branding wasn't tailored to this name change, Dos Caras flourished. It's been an unstoppable journey, filled with encounters with remarkable individuals. We were swept along, and it felt as though Dos Caras had its own momentum, unrelenting regardless of our actions.

LS: Impressive. Were you and your husband already enthusiasts of tequila due to your Mexican roots, or did you prefer other spirits? What inclined you toward selecting tequila?

Lupita: We aren't regular drinkers; my husband and I don't consume alcohol often. However, we are enthusiasts of craftsmanship. Tequila felt like a natural choice due to our Mexican background. It has a deep-rooted presence in our family. Tequila was always present at home, at family gatherings, and celebrations. While brandy gained some popularity at a point, tequila remained a constant. Our approach to tequila is different from the American perspective. In Mexico, we don't do shots or drink it to excess. It's more about savoring and enjoying a small amount. Even now, among the younger generation, it's not about excessive consumption; rather, it's a part of our family culture. My parents and my husband's grandparents, who are both 99 years old, exemplify this by sipping a bit of tequila daily, which we humorously attribute to their longevity.

LS: How was the name “Dos Caras” conceived?

Lupita: The name Dos Caras is both intriguing and multifaceted.

Initially, it's the idea that there's a before and after when we drink—two different sides. But there's more to it. My husband tends to elaborate on this.

Jorge: It's about acknowledging the various roles we embody— being a boss, an employee, a husband. There's the imagery of someone, like an attorney covered in tattoos, who transforms on weekends, riding a Harley Davidson. The concept evolved to encapsulate our curiosity about the "other side." More deeply, Dos Caras signifies a moment for introspection, an opportunity to question if we're living as we intend. It's not just about consuming, but about engaging in a meaningful conversation with yourself. We aimed for high-quality tequila that prompts this reflection, rather than being a habitual drink. We sought to defy the stereotype of tequila as just a macho, party drink. It's about stopping, sipping, pondering, a moment of conversation with oneself.

LS: Can we dive into your distillation process and introduce your master distiller, Gilberto?

Lupita: Gilberto's background is noteworthy. He was with the team that created, Cazadores, a pioneering tequila in Mexico.

Cazadores marked a shift, presenting tequila as a higher-end offering. Gilberto's allegiance to quality led him to leave when Cazadores changed its process post-acquisition, prioritizing cost-cutting. His commitment to maintaining the brand's integrity resonated with me. I find it puzzling when big companies compromise quality after a sale, when they could continue to make money without doing so.

Jorge: Let me dive deeper into this. What truly sets us apart is our unique approach. We're one of only two distilleries using a vertical autoclave, unlike the traditional horizontal setup. This method ensures a more even cooking process as our agave is shredded prior to cooking. The vertical arrangement allows the juices to ascend during the 16-hour cooking period, resulting in profoundly rich agave flavors. This distinct process defines our tequila. It's not just about claims; it's about the method that sets us apart. We double-distill, first in stainless steel and then in copper, enhancing the character. Additionally, we ensure our agaves mature for a full eight years, foregoing shortcuts.

Lupita: Gilberto, our master distiller, brought this innovative vertical cooking process from his tenure at Cazadores. He's kept its specifics close to his chest, revealing only that we're one of the two employing it. Gilberto Jasso Garcia is our master distiller, and his expertise spans 18 years across the Tequila and Charro distilleries.

LS: Gilberto sounds like quite an expert.

Lupita: Absolutely, he's our true luminary.

LS: Please elaborate on the cultivation of blue Weber agave and its connection to your product?

Lupita: Our agaves flourish in the Arandas region, part of Jalisco's Highlands. The landscape boasts rich red soil, an incredible backdrop. This soil's hue arises from its iron content, which oxidizes upon contact with water and oxygen, creating this vibrant red shade. This unique quality imparts exceptional fertility due to its nutrient and mineral richness. The rolling terrain minimizes water retention, which is ideal for agave growth. Equally intriguing is the region's consistent moderate climate, neither excessively hot nor cold, contributing to its distinct character.

Jorge: The red soil's mineral-rich nature infuses the agave with added sugars, significantly impacting flavor. This delineates the Golden Triangle, encompassing Atotonilco, Arandas, and Tepatitlan, from the lowlands around Tequila.

Contrary to popular belief, not all tequila originates from Tequila. The lowlands' volcanic dark rock results in smaller agaves with less sugar content. The crème de la crème of tequilas emerges from the Golden Triangle, with Arandas being the heart, hosting major brands like ours, Don Julio, and Patron.

LS: The geographical influence is fascinating.

Jorge: Indeed, the agave's essence is profoundly shaped by the land it grows in. The Highlands hold the key to exceptional tequila.

LS: What sets Dos Caras apart from other tequila brands?

Lupita: It's all about our passion, the profound passion that fuels our company. Personally, my connection with tequila runs deep due to my Jalisco roots, as well as my husband's. There's an inexplicable draw that resonates with us. I genuinely feel this connection in every fiber of my being, especially when I savor our tequila. It's a source of immense pride. Unlike many other offerings out there, ours truly stands out. There's a disconnect I perceive with larger companies, lacking the authentic kinship that drives us. Our passion extends to every aspect – the land, the plant, the growers, the distillers, and those involved in packaging.

Our goal is for the benefit of our endeavor to reach all these contributors. It's a depth of commitment you don't often find elsewhere.

LS: So, would you say that Dos Caras is imbued with a lot of love, heritage, and dedication?

Lupita: Absolutely, without a doubt.

LS: Does this love and heritage reflect in the flavor and overall presentation of Dos Caras?

Lupita: The flavor journey is unique. I personally adore cooked agave. It's a process I connect with deeply. When I'm at the distillery, tasting the cooked agave fibers, it's like a familiarity from another existence. That distinct taste resonates with me. Dos Caras brings me back to that sensation. It's the essence of what tequila should be for me. I recognize that fibrous, fantastic flavor of agave. It's a taste that resonates with my soul, even though not everyone shares my passion for it.

Jorge: That's what we call “aguamiel,” the pre-fermentation sugary liquid. Part of what differentiates us is our commitment to honor the traditional process. We're not reinventing anything; we're preserving what has existed. We're on a mission to do it right, following the time-honored path that predates the industry's massive expansion.

LS: What flavors can consumers expect from your tequila?

Lupita: While I've excelled in tasting classes, identifying various tequila flavors, my focus remains on agave. Cherry, lemon, citrus, cinnamon, and vanilla are part of the tasting experience, but for me, it's always about the agave. It's the core essence that matters. I value the presence of agave in all our tequilas, from Blanco to Anejo, and even our Extra Anejo, where wood barrel flavors complement the agave without overpowering it. Agave is the heart of tequila, and that's what sets Dos Caras apart.

Jorge: Agreed. If the Blanco is solid, you know you're in for an authentic journey. A good tequila should always let the agave shine, even as it ages and interacts with the barrel notes.

LS: How about the price range for your tequilas?

Jorge: Our range is from $50 to $200, starting from Blanco to Anejo.

As we move to Extra Anejo, prices reach around $700. We also offer premium lines that go beyond, ranging from $2500 to $15,000.

LS: Lupita, could you share your experience as a female owner in a male-dominated industry?

LS: What are your visions for Dos Caras in the next 3 to 5 years?

Lupita: Interestingly, in Mexico, my husband mainly oversees production, and my fluency in Spanish and cultural understanding may influence my experience. I don't sense prejudices or difficulties when interacting with those involved. When I visit the distillery in Arandas, I feel welcomed without the challenges often faced in the U.S. My dedicated team, including Ian, Andres, Les, and Jorge, has made a significant impact. Being the sole owner of Dos Caras

Lupita: I envision expanding the brand thoughtfully across the world, starting with carefully planned introductions state by state.

Establishing strong connections within communities, both onpremise and off-premise, is crucial. We're currently experiencing this positive reception in Nevada, especially in Las Vegas. There's a whole world beyond the Strip, and I want our product to resonate with diverse people in those areas.

Jorge: It's heartening to receive feedback from industry veterans who've been around for 20 to 25 years. They recognize the distinctiveness of our approach, from our marketing to our ESG programs. Doing things right and making a meaningful impact have been our goals. We believe that excellence leads to success, and this journey has been driven by our passion and pride. The feedback we receive, like being told ours is one of the best tequilas, reinforces the importance of infusing our work with energy and a spiritual connection.

Lupita: Yes, we believe in energy, in the transfers and movement of energy. An interesting anecdote: when we changed our distilling company and the liquid, I initially had reservations. But as we became more involved and our energy became intertwined with it, I experienced a shift. A moment came when I tasted the reposado, and it wasn't the same liquid I initially tried. A spiritual friend told me that it wasn't the tequila that changed, but us.

Lupita: I remember reading Sheryl Sandberg's book, "Lean In," a while back. At first, I thought I wasn't the type to lean in; I preferred staying in the background and listening. However, her message resonates. Even if it's outside your comfort zone, even if you doubt yourself, you must lean in, sometimes even more than you think.

Many industries are male-dominated, and as women, our voices might not always be heard. But leaning in and persistently expressing your opinions is vital. We need to make ourselves heard.

Jorge: Indeed, there's a mysterious aspect to it. Our distiller, who produces various well-known tequilas,

Lupita: Absolutely, the energy and intention we infuse into the process seem to have a tangible impact, transforming the liquid in a way that defies simple explanation.

LS: What advice do you have for women seeking success in business, both as entrepreneurs and business owners?

LS: "Lean in." I love that. Any final thoughts from you guys?

Jorge: Our primary goal is to make a positive impact and change the perception of tequila globally. It's disheartening how tequila is often misunderstood. We, as Hispanics, want our product to be respected worldwide. Having a quality product that represents us is what matters. We wish that everyone approached it with the same intention.

Lupita: I'd like to add that I'm fortunate to have an incredible team. Ian, our creative director, is exceptional. Les, who holds the position of on-site director.

Ian Miller (Creative Director): I'd like to emphasize this point. With nearly a decade of experience in branding and interactions with various business owners across different industries, I've encountered those who are profoundly dedicated to their work, motivated by reasons that go beyond financial gain. Personally, what Lupita and Jorge discussed about the underlying spirit of this venture is tangible, authentic, and genuine. This sentiment echoes in every dialogue we have, whether with business owners, casino managers, food and beverage personnel, or even our brand ambassadors.

It's evident when you ascend the hierarchy and find yourself in discussions with George and Lupita. To be honest, it's almost intangible—this force that transcends us. We're fortunate to be a part of it and to be swept along by its current. I genuinely mean all of this. As you become more acquainted with us over time, you'll witness this phenomenon evolving, as it truly permeates our brand and business interactions in unexpected and profound ways.

Lupita: Dos Caras possesses its own essence. It's a sensation that's hard to explain. Unlike many other businesses, this brand, this very brand, has a soul of its own. It's like... I can't quite put it into words. There's something about it, something unique.

he team at Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey knows a thing or two about distilling a great product. The company has racked up numerous awards over the last few years and also features a group of women in the company’s leadership team keeping that spirit of great whiskey alive. The company also preserves some unique African-American history and American spirits heritage in the process.

Uncle Nearest is named after Nathan “Uncle Nearest” Green, who crafted whiskey in the hills of Lynchburg, Tennessee over 160 years ago. Those who consider themselves whiskey aficionados might not be familiar with this unique piece of distilling’s past. Green was born into slavery before gaining his freedom after the Civil War. He went on to become the first African-American master distiller on record in the U.S. and later even taught Jack Daniel his skills, becoming the first master distiller for Jack Daniel Distillery.

Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey was founded in 2017 in Shelbyville, Tennessee, and keeps the life and traditions of the brand’s namesake going. Green’s story deeply resonates with company founder and CEO Fawn Weaver and master blender Victoria Eady Butler. Uncle Nearest whiskey can now be found in all 50 states and 12 countries. Enthusiast Report spoke with Weaver and Butler about the brand, their roles, the unique story behind what they do, and distilling great whiskey.

That trip included meeting with townspeople and some of Green’s and Daniel’s descendants. Weaver researched his story for months, gathering more than 10,000 artifacts. With the blessing and encouragement of the family, Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey launched in 2017. Of course, simply honoring a historical figure isn’t the only secret to success – customers actually have to enjoy pouring some of the product in a glass.

That seems to be the case as Uncle Nearest continues collecting awards.

The staff also stands out in the industry as well.

“Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey is the first whiskey ever to commemorate an African American and it’s the first major American spirit brand to be founded by and led by a Black woman,” Weaver says.

“Our entire leadership team are women and Victoria Eady Butler, our master blender and the great-great granddaughter of Nearest Green, is the first African American master blender for a major American spirit brand.

“I think we were able to gain traction because there was a level of hope in this story that I think people are drawn to. I always say we’re in the legacy-cementing business, not in the whiskey business. We’re doing that for Nearest’s legacy, but also for those who are at the beginning of their journey. That’s always been our ethos. That’s who we are.”

The company recently announced it will begin distributing its Single Barrel Whiskey this fall, kicking off with the Single Barrel Showdown.

This promotion allows whiskey fans to vote and help determine which five states will be the first to see the whiskey on store shelves. Weaver’s goal is to one day see Green mentioned alongside whiskey-distilling legends like Johnnie Walker, Jim Beam and Jack Daniel.

GREAT STORIES, GREAT WHISKEY For Fawn Weaver, being an entrepreneur is a major part of who she is. For the last 20 years she's been investing in lifestyle brands like restaurants or fitness studios, and also owned a public relations firm.

But a New York Times article about Green in 2016 would eventually lead to something new. A photo accompanying the story detailing Green’s work with Jack Daniel intrigued the businesswoman. In the image, Daniel was surrounded by his entire team. All were white, except for George Green, son of Nearest Green, located in the center of the photo.

“I was intrigued by the article so much that I wanted to learn more about Nearest,” she says. “I began researching the truth behind the article and for my 40th birthday present, I asked my husband to take me to Lynchburg, Tennessee, to further my research.

“The second goal is building the first spirits conglomerate to be founded, owned and led by an African-American and/or a woman,” she says. “There are seven spirit conglomerates that own the vast majority of spirits on shelves around the world and every one was founded, built, and continues to be led by a white male. I believe we have the leadership team and brand that allows us to make great inroads toward this goal, and the incredible brands we are investing in, will help us get there.”

Weaver believes in pulling others along with her on the pathway to success. She entered an industry “like a wrecking ball,” she notes, and wasn’t afraid of how others perceived her or what she was trying to accomplish. That’s the approach she recommends others with similar aspirations to take as well.

“My advice is to fail faster and harder, because if you are trying to play it safe, you're never going to reach any true dream that makes a difference for anybody else,” she says. “Failure isn't failure unless you give up before you succeed. Strive to become someone more extraordinary than you were the day before.”

WHISKEY MAKING RUNS IN THE FAMILY The idea of blending whiskey came later in life for Victoria Eady Butler. After working in law enforcement for many years, she was ready to retire until Weaver unearthed the history of Butler’s greatgreat grandfather. She’d never considered getting into what had been the family business at one time, but the opportunity seemed too good to pass up.

“I knew at that moment that if she was going to move forward with creating a whiskey that embodied his spirit, I needed to come out of retirement and be a part of it,” she says. “So that's what I did.”

Butler initially began as director of administration before blending Uncle Nearest’s first 1884 Small Batch in July 2019. That immediately brought several awards, so blending a second batch followed.

The accolades kept coming and Butler soon stepped into the role of master blender. The company’s atmosphere made the transition easier.

“Our team is quite different from most,” she says.

“We are extremely encouraging of one another. My team members embraced me from the beginning knowing that I was not originally from the spirits industry. They’ve shown me so much grace and patience. I have learned so much from them.”

Butler is now responsible for all the blends that Uncle Nearest puts on the market. Her role isn’t just special for her, but for the family as well.

Green’s descendants love that she and the whiskey are keeping his name alive.

“My grandmother, Nearest Green's granddaughter, made sure that our whole family, and anyone else who would listen, knew that her grandfather taught Jack Daniel how to make whiskey,” she says. “I am still in awe of the rich legacy that he carved out; especially given that when he started distilling, he was not a free man. In spite of the challenges that surely came with being enslaved, Nearest Green was a creative man who crafted some of the best whiskey around. I am extremely proud of my heritage and grateful to continue what my greatgreat grandfather started.”

LS: Candice, you have a swimwear brand, correct?

CS: Yes! It’s called Tropic of C, and we launched it five years ago! It’s a sustainable lifestyle brand, which I dreamt up about seven years ago. It's been such a joy to take on this new role in my life.

LS: Tell me a little about the brand.

CS: I've been modeling for about 20 years and was mostly known for Victoria's Secret Swimwear.

Because of this, it felt the most organic to start my business within this space. Victoria's Secret had stopped doing swim, so, I thought, “okay, now's the time.” We've since expanded into other categories, and my dream is to continue growing.

It's a continuation of my legacy that I built for 20 years. I think about everything I've sacrificed to get to where I am now. I was never going to put out a product I wasn't proud of or that I didn't know where it was coming from and how it was made. The sustainability aspect was also very important to me.

When we started, sustainability and swimwear didn't coexist. Many other companies have since jumped on the sustainability bandwagon. It's kind of now becoming the norm. I feel proud that we were one of the pioneers in that category.

LS: Have you always wanted to go into business?

CS: I never thought I’d start my own business. I think people in the fashion industry don't know how political and business-minded you must be to be successful. I've learned a lot from that experience.

Tropic of C was born from my desire to have a creative outlet to share everything I've learned over the years. I want it to cater to women like me that are multifaceted. I'm a mother; I’m in fashion; I’m a businesswoman. It's for the woman that wants to be chic, on the go, and practical.

LS: Why the name Tropic of C? CS: I didn't want to directly connect the brand to my name because I wanted it to be its own entity.

My vision for Tropic of C was that you are always transported to a place with an eternal summer when you wear it. I'm a very curious person, so I love to travel to amazing places and discover new cultures.

Tropic of C became more of a place than a brand in my mind.

LS: Do you feel that you're living the American dream now with your business and with your career? Is it everything you expected?

CS: I don't love the term American Dream because anyone can create their own dream wherever they are. I will say that the United States has this entrepreneurial mindset that allows people to really lean into their vision, no matter how crazy an idea may be or how hard it might be to build it. I think there's so many people from all over the world that come here for that exact reason—no matter the industry. It's this melting pot of talent, which I think is what enables the American dream to happen.

LS: What has been your biggest hurdle in business that you've had to overcome?

CS: I’ve had to better understand and learn my power and strengths but also admit when I don’t know and need to ask for guidance.

LS: So, what’s your superpower then?

CS: I’d say it’s not leading with dollar signs. Tropic of C has never been about a pretty picture or selling product. That’s never been my motivation to start a company.

Instead, the support has grown organically through the community and the fans over the years, which in turn has created something so special for this brand.

It resonates with them in a different way because I like to create this emotion through imagery and take them on a journey.

LS: How involved are you on the day to day with Tropic of C? CS: I'm very involved in all the aspects of the business. For me, it’s important to always know what's happening. I love to evolve and learn, which was one of the driving forces as well for starting this company.

When I first launched, maybe I wasn’t an expert, but I knew I could become one. I've been fortunate to be steered in the right direction and have surrounded myself with an A team of professionals who are experts in their specific roles.

LS: What advice would you give to young women and men wanting to get into business or fashion? What advice would you give them for them to reach their dreams?

CS: Starting a business is not for everyone. I would say believe in your idea and mission relentlessly and have a reason for your business. My reason to start Tropic of C was never driven by fame or making money, and I think people see the passion is there. They feel how much I believe in what I'm doing, and how happy it makes me to see my community enjoying the product.

LS: Where do you see Tropic of C in the next three to five years?

CS: I would love to see Tropic of C really establish itself in the lifestyle area by expanding into more categories such as motherhood and clean beauty. Above all, I hope to continue growing our community and being able to reach these women that I get such beautiful reactions from.

LS: What is the legacy that you'd like to leave behind on this planet?

CS: I want people to remember me as somebody that cared about humanity and the planet. Someone that was always kind and that was always hard working. Hopefully I’ve influenced people to be better in whatever they're doing. I'm not changing the world with my business, but I'm inspiring other businesses to be better. I'm inspiring people to be more conscious of what they're buying. I'm inspiring my children to be hard workers and to go after their dreams. That’s my legacy.

LS: How do you and Courtney keep it together as a family?

ML: We’ve been together for 14 years, married for ten, and we're blessed with three healthy, beautiful kids. Honestly, my wife's been great about making sure the machine runs smoothly because unfortunately, in my line of work, the schedule is very unpredictable and fluid. But she understands that, and she rolls with the punches and acclimates quickly, whether it's with the kids schedules or for herself.

We both work. We both are hands on with our kids and all their activities. And yet I don't feel we're missing out. I’m fortunate enough to work about 20 minutes from home, which means that I’m there to see everybody off to school. From there, I hit the ground running. I'll squeeze in some jiu jitsu or boxing, and then I'll do the radio show [On With Mario Lopez]. Afterwards, I have Access Hollywood, possibly a meeting or two, and then I’m able to be there for my son's practice, or tournament.

LS: It seems like you guys are always doing family stuff and that you're together a lot. Especially with two crazy schedules and three kids, it seems like you still carve out that time. Do you both still feel the same passion you did nine, ten years ago?

ML: Honestly, not to sound corny, but it's better than ever with us. Of course, as a couple, we’re not going to always agree on everything and have disagreements from time to time, but I think those moments are also important. You must learn to choose your battles, but also have rules when it comes to arguing and fighting so no one crosses any lines.

CL: We don't really fight when we fight. If we do, I think that’s because one of us is just really tired, so we just react. We don’t really fight over any big issues, only the kind of silly, small stuff.

LS: Do you guys want your children in Hollywood when they're older?

CL: I want them to do whatever they want. We try to diversify their interests and expose them to many different things.

ML: Well, I want to raise, most importantly, good, kind kids that try to come from a place of love with all people. We always stress manners and being polite.

CL: At home, they're crazy. But I'd rather have them be house devils and street angels. When they're away from you, they're representing you and your family. So, it makes you feel good when you know your parenting is being heard.

ML: I really do believe carrying yourself like a gentleman or a lady goes a long way. Manners go a long way. Being nice and being genuine go a long way. People remember that. People remember how you made them feel, and I think it comes back around. But at the end of the day, I want them to not only be good people, I want them to be independent and confident in whatever it is that they want to do, and pursue whatever passion they choose. And so far, I feel we're on the right track and that we're doing a good job. I had to grow up a lot quicker, a lot more street smart. I try to expose them to a strong work ethic and let them see that their dad's hustling and working hard every day. I try to lead by example and show them that there are no shortcuts and hopefully that'll be implemented and incorporated into their mindset and lifestyle.

LS: You two met in New York, right? At a Broadway show where you were performing at the time?

ML: Yes. It was a sort of a bucket list thing to do. And I was there for six months. And I met her the last couple of months of the show.

LS: So, Courtney, what was his pitch to you like? Every guy has a pitch or a way to charm a woman. What do you remember? Or Mario, did Courtney charm you?

ML: Well, I tried to get her to go out with me. She didn't go out with me at first. And then when she finally said yes, which was smart, by the way, then I was late and then she blew me off. And then she brought her friend the next time together. So, then it was, “I’m gonna make you work for this.”

CL: Yeah.

LS: What was the first date?

ML: The first date was when she brought her friend and we had dinner in New York City. I remember Spike Lee was sitting at the table next door and he came over and visited. It was cool and he was very nice, and he made me look good that night.

LS: So, we touched on family, now let’s try business. What is your best business advice?

ML: I think whatever your passion is, then you need to do just that. Focus on that one thing or skill. Commit every spare moment of your time being consumed by it. You should wake up thinking about it. You should go to bed thinking about it, and any help you can get. This generation is lucky because you can literally learn how to do anything on YouTube or Google. You can create your own content. You can create your own brand; you can create your own business. They didn't have this when I was growing up as a kid. But it's also about discipline and consistency. Those are the two things I would tell people; you must be disciplined, and you have to be consistent. And if you do that and aren’t afraid to ask questions or reach out to certain people and start from the bottom, then you have nowhere to go but to work your way up. I think you need people to help keep you accountable and I think it's important to have a great partner. I’m lucky that with my wife, I can bounce ideas off of her. I want to be ubiquitous and synonymous with the five F's, which is our family, faith, fitness, food, and fun. If it doesn't fall under one of those five buckets, then I'm not necessarily interested.

LS: Where do you see the Lopez family in the next 10 to 15 years?

CL: First, it's scary how fast time goes by. I know everybody says that and it sounds very cliche, but it is. You think the days are long, but the years end up being so short and your kids are one, two, three, four or five. And some days when you're having bad days and you think the day's never going to end, you've just got to live in the moment and not wish the day away. To live in the moment is what you need to do because before you know it, your kids are going to be out of the house doing their own thing.

They don't want to be near you. They don't want to be with you.

ML: And I think the key and something you'll see when you have kids, is that you’ve got to be present, and you’ve got to be there. That's the one thing you don't want - is to get so overwhelmed and so consumed with your goals that you're an absentee father or mother, because then what are you doing it for? In 15 years, our youngest will be just turning 18.

Hopefully he'll be off to college and not in prison.

CL: I just want to have hope. Hopefully we have more time to just enjoy them and do the things that we love because we want to, not because we must.

ML: Everything's a temp job. You don't know, everything can end tomorrow. Just like that. I want to continue to parlay on what I've worked so hard for and to build on it and to not only provide for my family, but to be able to take care of them and provide other opportunities for my friends and represent my community.

Heming Willis’ genuine charm, wits, and unwavering determination are a force to be reckoned with.

LS: Emma, tell us a little bit about your background and how you got started.

EHW: I was born in Malta to a Guyanese mom and British dad. My dad worked for an oil company, so we were traveling around consistently. We traveled around for a big part of my young life. We lived in Beirut, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and when my parents divorced, we were living in Southern California, and my mom found herself all of a sudden as a single mom having to raise me and working three jobs to make ends meet. We ended up moving to London for a few years so we could be close to my grandmother, who was sick at the time. I did some schooling in northeast London for a little bit and then moved back to California in fourth grade. When I turned 16, I started modeling in LA and had this once in a lifetime opportunity to move to Europe to pursue it after winning a modeling competition. I moved to Europe with my mom, and kicked off my modeling career in London, then I went to Paris, Milan, that whole fashion circuit. From there, I went to New York in 1999 where my career really took off and stayed in the city for the remainder of my modeling career.

LS: Tell us about your current projects.

EHW: I have a brand called CocoBaba, which is a body care line that I launched in Germany. During Covid, as I was bringing the brand to the US, with Helen Christoni’s help, I told her about this drink supplement I wanted to create around women’s wellness that addresses our brain health. Because no one is talking to women about their brains. Helen was intrigued, so we rolled up our sleeves and went to work. That’s how Make Time Wellness was born.

LS: What inspired you to create Make Time Wellness?

EHW: A couple of years ago I was having issues with “mommy brain,” and feeling dull and foggy. Naturally, I had sought after a doctor whose focus was the brain, because my general doctor wasn’t talking to me about it. This specialized doctor introduced me to the term “brain health,” which at the time, I'd never heard of before. He taught me how to take care of my brain with supplements and through a total lifestyle change I saw a big improvement. However, the issue was that there were so many vitamins that I was taking, like fistfuls, multiple times a day. It just turned me off and who has time for that! I think there was a point in my life where it served a purpose and I'd happily just take the pills, but there just came a point where I realized that I had burned out and I was just too busy. So I had this idea to create a brain health drink, to use all of these vitamins that I was taking, but combine it into a drink powder that tasted great in replacement.

LS: When you came out with and designed the formula, how long did that take?

EHW: It took about two years. It's not a quick process, especially when it needs to be efficacious and taste great!

EHW: I see it on shelves in the retail space. I would love to see us reach outside the US and be an international brand. And continue to expand the line. We have a lot of ways and things up our sleeves we’ll be making time for, trust me!

LS: So what's next for you, Emma?

EHW: I try to live day by day, sometimes hour by hour. I really love being a mom, being a wife, being able to raise awareness and an advocate around topics that people don't freely talk about like dementia, caregiving and the importance of brain health. I'm happy to have finally found my community within that space.

LS: You have philanthropic aspects to this business. Can you tell us a little bit more that's related to it?

EHW: We have a social impact program where we donate 5% of all proceeds earned from Make time Wellness to Hilarity for Charity.

They are an organization that helps support caregivers and who are educating us all on the importance of brain health. I love this side of the business because it’s so meaningful and impactful to me.

LS: What’s your goal in the next 3 to 5 years? What would you guys like to see the brand?

Hope Goldie & Shahpar Khaledi DARIOUSH Hope Goldie is the master of a thousand decisions of Darioush. She oversees all enology and wine production operations and carries on the meticulous attention paid in the vineyard into the cellar, laboratory, and crush pad. Her work is in fine-tuning – lot by lot, she applies her vast knowledge of fermentation science, sensory chemistry, viticulture, and enology.

Hope joined Darioush as their Enologist in 2005 and continued her contributions as Winemaker alongside Darioush's founding Winemaker, Steve Devitt, for ten years before being promoted to Director of Winemaking beginning with the 2018 vintage. Today, Hope continues to oversee all aspects of winemaking at Darioush and extends her expertise as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Society of Enology and Viticulture.

Shahpar Khaledi is the proprietor of Darioush and her founding vision for the wine combines her experience in fashion and boutique retail, as well as her trendsetting sensibility cultivated over decades as founder and creative director of Echelon, an influential women’s boutique that offered niche European designers. Treating her clients and guests well is more than a cultural tradition for Shahpar, it is a way of life – one she has added to the hospitality experience at Darioush. Taarof is the Persian art of social etiquette, the art of politeness, a way to make your guest feel more at home than home itself.

This helps the vineyard function as a system designed by nature and includes diverse cover crops, pollinator gardens, and the use of animals instead of tilling. A Colorado native, Meghan fell in love with wine and winemaking while she was negotiating contracts for the NFL. She shifted careers and fully immersed herself in the wine industry, participating in harvests around the world including Colchagua Valley, Chile, Piedmont, Italy, Bordeaux, France, as well as experience at Screaming Eagle and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars in Napa Valley.

Grape Expectations TRADITION MEETS TASTE WITH TERLATO FAMILY VINEYARDS INTERVIEW BY LINCOLN SALAZAR

W

ith a legacy spanning decades, Terlato Family Vineyards has seamlessly woven innovation and tradition into every bottle.

Savoring the elegance and finesse of their meticulously crafted varietals - from the sun-kissed vineyards to the expertly guided fermentation process - Terlato's commitment to quality is evident in every sip.

LS: Could you go ahead and introduce yourself a little bit?

ET: My name is Elise Terlato and I'm a marketing manager and fourth generation family member at Terlato Wines International. I grew up in a northern suburb of Chicago, went on to study at the University of Miami, in the School of Communications, and became interested in creative advertising, psychology and marketing. After graduating, I worked in marketing at Chicago Social Magazine and then went on to work in advertising as an account executive at FCB Global Chicago. After about three and a half years working on travel and healthcare brands, at FCB, I wanted to focus more on food and beverage. Growing up in an Italian American family, these topics were important and always interested me. I applied for many different positions, one of them being a competitor of our family. That is when my dad approached me and said that he'd like me to apply for an open marketing position on one of our family brands. In our family business we require at least 3 years of outside experience, and a promotion that requires you to manage others, before working for the family business. It's been about five years that I've been working for my family's business. I started working as an associate marketing manager on our estate and family brands and then, right around when Covid happened, moved into more of a digital marketing role, helping to enhance our family website Terlato.com and our direct to consumer business, on our family owned brands, which are Rutherford Hill in Napa, Chimney Rock in Napa, Sanford in Santa Barbara, Klipsun in Washington State, and Terlato Vineyards in Friuli, Italy. I've also worked on our direct to consumer website, Uncorked.com, where you can purchase most wines from our portfolio. Now I work as a marketing manager, continuing to manage all of the assets on our websites as well as some exciting side projects that I've been able to work on. During my time working for the company, I also earned a certificate in Saq and Diploma in Wine Management and Gastronomy from Le Cordon Bleu in London.

LS: So let's start from the beginning. Tell us a little about your family history and how Terlato came to be.

ET: We are a fourth generation family business headquartered in a suburb right outside of Chicago. It all started in 1938 when my great grandfather, Anthony Paterno, owned his own retail store here in Chicago. Eventually, my grandfather, Anthony Terlato, son-in-law of Anthony Paterno, began working in the retail store for his father-in-law. And eventually, as the company continued to grow, he became the CEO, and then Chairmen in later years. At which point my father, Bill, became the CEO in the 90s and is the existing president and CEO. As a family business, we're dedicated to continuing to build and foster long term relationships, and work exclusively with other family owned businesses. We work exclusively with family owned businesses. Many people don't realize this, but all of the brands represented in the Terlato portfolio are family owned.

We strongly believe in supporting other family owned businesses who have a like-minded vision and passion for what they do. One thing that is consistent across many family owned brands, especially in the beverage industry, is quality. So when looking at our history, you'll notice that we have been successful in every level of the industry. We started out as retailers, as mentioned, then went on to be wholesalers, eventually selling our distributing business, and then importers, marketers as well as winery and vineyard owners. This experience in all aspects of the industry makes us unique.

LS: You guys recently got into Spirit Brands as well. Can you tell us a little bit about your current Spirit Brands’ distilling process?

ET: We're very excited about the growth of our spirit portfolio. We represent a handful of premium artisan spirits. We recently acquired Riazul Tequila, and Dublin Ink Irish Whisky, and are investing in bourbon, as well.

LS: Are there any obstacles that you've had to overcome working together as a family?

ET: Yes - it can be difficult in a family business to know when to stop. It's not your typical 9 to 5, and it's important to learn how to have a healthy separation between work life and family life, especially when your work comes home with you to the dinner table. Another big one in general is family planning and governance. As the years go on and each generation continues to get larger, it's best to move forward with a plan for the next generation versus picking up the pieces later on. It's also about maintaining the family vision and tradition, while also staying relevant and current in our ever changing industry and world.

LS: What do you enjoy most about working as a family owned company?

ET: The fact that you're working for something greater than yourself. My hope is that our brands and portfolio will continue to evolve and grow, and that we continue to have future generations involved.

LS: What do you think separates Terlato from other competitors that are out there?

ET: Definitely the fact that we are family owned and we want to continue as a multi-generational family company. It is also the years of experience and success that we have had, in all aspects of the industry, that has positioned us as leaders in luxury for more than 50 years. All while being dedicated to our simple philosophy – “Quality Endures.”
