There’s no place like our (office) home Welcome to our neighborhood. In this issue, we launch what we hope will be an ongoing idea – learning about neighborhoods and who loves them from the people who live in them. We love 7th Street and so do our neighbors. They (and we) will tell you why.

It’s easy to describe because we’ve talked about our happiness in Belle Grove for 19 years now. We love downtown, but not in the traffic (busy Garrison is three blocks away). We have huge, mature trees and wide sidewalks, courtesy of “urban planning” in the early 19th century.

It’s quiet. Birds sing. We have a front porch lifestyle (when loafing). Neighbors include workers from Weldon, Williams & Lick who take daily powerwalks on breaks and residents who stop and chat over the fence. Our good landlord is the Bonneville House Association.

We watch a lot of weddings, without wearing heels! We learn about restoration and repair from watching what goes on around us.

And we notice how many people like visiting a historic district, people from here and from out of town. We wave at tour buses, hand out maps and brochures – and our magazines.

I find that people who visit historic sites and who appreciate and restore old properties to have intelligent, creative, authentic personalities.

Preservationists save worthy things and make them useful and pretty again. All neighbors on this very old street applaud others who bring properties back to their former glory. We have real life here - we don’t need HGTV! We usually have a great vantage point from which to watch the Unexpected artwork reveal itself. We can walk to a bookstore, a courthouse, city offices, great eateries, a river trail, a national park. Know what we don’t have nearby? Fast food and big box stores - who needs them?

Best of all, we have a caring community and even though we only do business here on 7th Street, it’s still like being home.

We invite you, readers, to nominate your neighborhoods for future stories in eFort Smith.

Some of you decorate for holidays together.

Somewhere, a kind early bird is moving a neighbor’s newspaper on to their porch or pulling in their trash can.

7th street residents Wully and Shandrah Bremner own two adjacent, lovely homes and have enjoyed living here for almost 20 years.

It’s the best neighborhood in the Belle Grove Historic District, or in town – according its residents This is the first in a series of stories about neighborhoods – beginning with “ours,” because Entertainment Fort Smith’s office is here. Readers are invited to nominate their own neighborhoods for a “We ♥ (your street) feature.” – the Editors.

In the past few years, there’s the most wonderful sound in the Belle Grove Historic District - hammers and electric saws. All along North 7th Street, renovation and restoration is ongoing or just receiving final touches.

When Entertainment Fort Smith leased 316 North 7th Street, we had lovely but very quiet neighbors on a street of beautiful, historic homes and buildings. Ours, a converted home, belongs to and is beside the historic Bonneville House, a queen of the district. It has been, and is now, exceptionally well cared for.

Now, from North B Street for many blocks, almost every address is lived-in, loved, lively and refreshed, or getting that way fast. At the moment, a hero to all on 7th Street is Justin Skinner, literally a savior of two of the most endangered homes in all of the historic district, plus a third that really needed the love.

All are in the 400 block. One, currently home for Justin and Holly, had burned substantially while unoccupied. It seemed hopeless. The other (seen on the cover) had been boarded up for several decades with rain pouring through its collapsing roof.

Skinner took them on as investment properties, something he spoke about at the recent Invest Fort Smith seminar held by 64.6 Downtown. Using courage and construction knowledge, he has or will soon have converted two of them into incomeproducing rental units. Each can be restored to single-family homes, he said, “basically by unlocking a door.” Following current code while obeying historic preservation regulations has not been an obstacle, he said. As most historic renovators would agree, these homes were well-built, mostly by master craftsmen. Many times, a repair need only follow the original builders’ sound construction principles. Modern insulation, however, is an improvement.

This really is his dream home – and has been all his life

T

his has been ‘my’ house for 40 years.” It’s not just an expression to Clifford Culpepper, a Fort Smith native who retired early and returned home. He has long had his eye on the unusual Craftsman home at the corner of 7th and C Streets, with its tile roof, stained glass and deep eaves.

“I grew up on 7th, near Howard School,” he explained. “My first job was at the Bonneville House, as a dishwasher. It was used then as the Red Cross headquarters.

I came here to get my lifeguard certification when I was in high school.”

Clifton recalls when renters lived in the Clayton House, which was a downon-its-heels rooming house before several women, led by the late Julia Yadon, Coe Koenig and others, worked in the 1970s to establish the Belle Grove Historic District and encourage its preservation.

He learned about the Craftsman style while studying architecture at Northside High School (Class of ’81) and liked this house, built in 1908 by wholesale liquor merchant Win Harper, more than any other.

After a career with American Airlines, living in Dallas, San Francisco and Chicago, he became considerably more interested in retiring to Fort Smith when he learned ‘his’ house was on the market. While still living in Chicago, he gave an application presentation to the Historic District Commission for his renovation plans and got them approved.

He was devastated when it sold instead to another buyer, but he persisted and purchased it from them. He was able to obtain, with the purchase, four original, framed drawings of his house, “elevations,” by the architect.

Clifton has been living in the house while restoring it and is “only” six downstairs rooms away from being finished, he chuckled. He has two bright and highly accomplished kids making their way through college and beyond who may have a place to sleep “by Christmas,” he said, as if convincing himself.

But he is right – the hardest work is almost done. Each window that had to be repaired had 18 separate pieces, he noted. “The biggest challenge was finding proper help. People don’t seem to know about anything about wood.”

Acting as his own contracter, he has found the right craftspeople for most of the skilled restoration work. Not claiming to be a carpenter himself, he has learned a few principles, such as never throwing any original milled wood away, but to save it for re-use or for the correct pattern for reproduction.

Clifton has also been inspired to make at least one original and appropriate addition to his home – he designed Wright-style ornamentation for an attic hatch and had it constructed, stained and installed. He’s pleased. He has also found at least one secret panel that contained the key to a safe that was once in the home. There’s No Place Like Home Tour the Belle Grove Historic District on foot to notice architectural details and learn the history of homes and building

Oct. 12 Walking Tours of Belle Grove Historic District's 5th and 6th Street Take a guided tour of the Belle Grove Historic District. This October tour includes information about the historic structures along North 5th and 6th Streets, with stories of people who built them, other residents through time and each structure's unique architectural features.

Belle Grove Historic District holds the distinction of being the most diverse in the state, with more than 20 different architectural styles from the Victorian era lining its streets. The 22-block historic district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, also was the first such district in the state to have local ordinances for exterior architectural control and special zoning.

A treasure of preserved mid- to late 19th century and early 20th century buildings, the district includes styles such as Victorian Gothic Revival, Victorian Renaissance, Victorian Baroque, Victorian Second Empire, Queen Anne Victorian, Eastlake Victorian, and Classic Revival. The most prominent building, Belle Grove School, now the Belle Grove School House Apartments, is the landmark of the neighborhood from which the district is named.

In the Belle Grove Historic District, you need to know Monte Smith – he lives just around the corner on 8th so the commute isn’t bad to go to Clifford Culpepper’s house. The master carpenter has done so much specialty renovation work in Belle Grove that his touches can be seen on the exteriors of many homes. Monte just knows things, like what the Bonneville House back stairs (seen at left with Clifton’s home in the background) should look like, or how to repair or reproduce the balusters on the Bonneville porch – and roof. He has applied his skills to the interior and exterior of many homes on North 7th and 8th Street, including the ornate, Eastlake E.C. Haskett house at 312 North 8th, circa 1882, for which he recreated by hand many “gingerbread” wooden ornaments. When opportunity has presented itself, he most enjoys original design work such as the outstanding restrooms he created at the Fort Smith Museum of History, incorporating period-style millwork and museum images.

Not every historic home needs a major renovation

N

orth 7th Street, like other streets in the Belle Grove Historic District, has a mix of homes in different states of repair and decor. Some residents do their own “This Old House” epic restorations. Others buy homes put in good shape by a previous owner’s efforts and become stewards of a already comfortable historic dwelling.

The family of Talicia and Jay Richardson, after living away from Fort Smith for years, moved into one of 7th Street’s most appealing homes precisely because of work that had been done by earlier owners.

Talicia leads 64.6 Downtown, a non-profit organization that presents the Unexpected art festival and through its Propelling Downtown Forward initiative, encourages investment and innovation in the city’s legacy center for business, banking, law and entrepreneurship. She serves on the Fort Smith Public School District’s school board.

Jay serves as state representative to District 78 in the Arkansas House of Representatives. Both enjoying making their home in one of Fort Smith’s most venerable, historical neighborhoods.

nual block party for neighbors and the students of the Future School of Fort Smith, a charter school.

The deep, shady front porch of their Prairie Style home is a comfortable gathering place. Their large lawn is an adventureland for their son.

Everyone re-decorates eventually, but Talicia says they chose their home for its already-livable comforts. The family is a familiar sight, walking together to a downtown event or restaurant. She has a short commute to her Garrison Avenue office.

Mila and Dan Masur had never been to Fort Smith or even to Arkansas when they first came for Dan to have a job interview.

She had browsed through real estate listings before visiting and “on a fluke” they drove down North 7th Street. When they found 414 North 7th Street for sale, they “fell in love at first sight” with the circa 1906 Victorian home with its wraparound porch.

“We hadn’t been in town 48 hours before we made an offer,” she said. The home was ready to move into, well-renovated by the sellers. “It had been worked on and cared for,” Mila said.

Dan, after a career as a Marine, accepted that job. Mila has become the director of the nearby

Clayton House, Fort Smith’s Victorian “house museum.”

Responsible for creating diverse activities such as local history “Clayton Conversations,” teas in high Victorian style and school programs, Mila quickly became familiar with Belle Grove and Fort Smith history. She helps Clayton House partner with the Fort Smith Museum of History, the Fort Smith National Historic Site, Bonneville House Association and other preservation and history-related groups and tourism organizations.

“Here’s how much we loved this house,” Dan explained. “That was next door,” he said, gesturing to the house their neighbor Justin Skinner is now bringing back to life.

In 2016, it was in its worst shape of all time, with a roof open to the sky and all its windows and doors boarded over. The Masurs couldn’t know an investor would soon come along – or if the house would fall in before it was repaired.

“Justin has this looking great,” Dan said in true appreciation.

They are delighted with the energy rising on North 7th Street today and they often greet their neighbors from that wrap-around porch that caught their hearts at first sight.

Iconic silos await a new suit of clothing

he attention of the international visual art community will once again be focused on Fort Smith Oct. 7-12 as The Unexpected returns.

For the fifth year, 64.6 Downtown, a private, non-profit consortium, will bring world-class street art and entertainment to the river valley.

During the initial years of 64.6’s mission to bring high-quality urban and contemporary art to Arkansas, the state was barely a blip on the radar in the visual art world. However, with the help of festival curatorial partner JustKids in attracting world-renowned artists to the event, the images adorning the exterior walls of Fort Smith’s historic downtown structures have put the Natural State on the map.

It is a rare opportunity to have the quality of art that international publications such as Juxtapoz, U Funk, Street Art Globe, and others will be reporting on literally dropped in our own backyard so don’t miss the intimate experience of witnessing Art al Fresco as it is being created.

Block off the dates on your calendar; record the locations for this year’s murals. And, if you are unable to visit the sites during the week, at least reroute your drive to work or lunch to follow the daily progress of this inspiring art.

the artists online prior to the festival. They then ask their children to locate the artists’ home on a world map and read about that area’s culture.

Once the artists have begun work, the entire Walrod family loads into the van to visit each

site daily. They also visit mural locations preceding the event, believing this before-and-after comparison provides a new perspective for the children on the transforming effect art can have on an environment.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE 2019 UNEXPECTED • The legendary Spanish painter and sculptor Okuda San Miguel returns. Employing distinctive, colorful geometric patterns, he transformed a small, nondescript building located at the convergence of Rogers and Garrison avenues into an exciting kaleidoscope of color and symmetrical shapes.

His “Universal Chapel” has since been removed to make room for the new Gateway Park; however, the 64.6 team is excited to see what he will craft with this year’s medium, the home located at 1319 North G Street.

When you visit “The Home” to follow the progress of Okuda’s oeuvre, go ahead and park your vehicle because the next project is just a short walk away at the corner of Grand Avenue and North 11th Street.

A pre-visit is recommended, as Londonbased Camille Walala utilizes the trademark vibrant colors and bold patterns of her tribal-pop style to transform this one-time service station, pumps included, into a work of art.

You may want to drive to the next mural site; however, walking/biking will provide the oppor-

tunity to tour many pieces from the four previous Unexpected festivals.

The iconic silos at the former Shipley Bakery building will serve as the canvas for Mexico City-based Hilda Palafox, also known as Poni, to create a two-part mural piece.

It will be particularly interesting to witness the progression of this project as Poni blends the cylindrical shapes of the giant twin silos with her concept of exploring the boundaries of character and composition in a perpetual sense of romanticism, while still expressing the consistent delicacy of femininity found in most of her projects.

Her piece will serve as the centerpiece for the soon-to-open entertainment venue called The Bakery District.

Along with the murals, this year’s Unexpected includes a variety of other happenings celebrating art and entertainment.

Scottish-born poet, artist and sculptor Robert Montgomery will create a first for the River Valley: a “light poem” at 414 Towson Avenue.

French visual and performance artist Alexandre Bavard will deliver an adaptation of his performative piece BULKY, the premier showing in the United States. The per-

formance also will be a collaboration with local dancers and dance studios.

Tech entrepreneur, TED speaker and author Jia Jiang will lecture on lessons learned from his 100 Days of Rejection experiment. His experience has been reported on by Forbes and Bloomberg Businessweek and is sure to be enlightening for all who attend.

The weeklong event begins Oct. 5 with a kick-off block party at Cisterna Park on Garrison Avenue and will include food trucks, art activities and programs, capped off with a family concert by National Public Radio.

To celebrate the conclusion of the festival Oct. 11-12, the manmade canyon walls of downtown Fort Smith will reverberate with a unique musical blend of the various music genres emanating from the numerous venues that will host live bands.

As the water rushes over the edge at this point of the dam, it is loud, and powerful, and beautiful. I used a telephoto lens to make this photo, isolating this part of the dam and the water.

Natural Dam is one of my favorite photographic locations. Many people think once they have been there, why return? But, it has become so familiar to me, that my challenge each time I return is to make a photograph with a unique viewpoint, and present the dam and the water in a different way, and reveal some of the diverse elements that make up this spot in the Arkansas Ozarks. – Larry Millican

Even when there is more water than in this image, it smooths as it passes over the rocks at the dam’s edge, reflecting the blue sky and the trees.

CRESCENT MUMMY DOGS Costumes, candy and crescent mummy dogs—that’s what Halloween is all about! Have your little ghouls and goblins help prep dinner by wrapping the crescent dough strips around the hot dogs to look like bandages. They’ll love seeing these simple-yet-spooky mummies bake up into cheesy, crescent-wrapped Halloween pigs in a blanket to eat before they trick-or-treat!

1 can (8 oz.) refrigerated crescent rolls 2 1/2 slices American cheese, quartered 10 hot dogs Cooking spray Mustard or ketchup, if desired Heat oven to 375 degrees. Unroll dough; separate at perforations, creating 4 rectangles. Press perforations to seal.

With knife or kitchen scissors, cut each rectangle lengthwise into 10 pieces, making a total of 40 pieces of dough. Slice cheese slices into quarters (1/2 slice cheese, cut in half ).

Wrap four pieces of dough around each hot dog and 1/4 slice of

cheese to look like "bandages," stretching dough slightly to completely cover hot dog. About 1/2 inch from one end of each hot dog, separate "bandages" so hot dog shows through for "face." On ungreased large cookie sheet, place wrapped hot dogs (cheese side down); spray dough lightly with cooking spray.

Bake 13 to 17 minutes or until dough is light golden brown and hot dogs are hot. With mustard, draw features on "face."

WITCHES HATS 1 can (8 oz.) refrigerated crescent rolls 1/4 cup miniature semisweet chips 2 teaspoons powdered sugar or cocoa Heat oven to 375 degrees. Separate dough into 8 triangles.

Sprinkle a heaping teaspoon of chocolate chips on wide end of crescent triangle, and roll over once to form brim of hat.

Form the rest of the crescent triangle into hat shape. Repeat for remaining crescent triangles. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown.

Using fine mesh strainer, sprinkle crescent hats with powdered sugar or cocoa; serve warm.

MUMMY HEAD CANDY APPLES

MUMMY COOKIES These bright and colorful Mummy Cookies are a fun twist on traditional mummies. Fun to decorate, and yummy to eat.

8 small apples 8 craft sticks (flat wooden sticks with round ends) 2 1/2 cups white candy melts or coating wafers (14 oz), chopped Black paste icing color (not liquid food color) Wash and dry apples; remove stem and blossom ends. Insert wooden stick into stem end of each apple.

In medium microwavable bowl, microwave candy melts uncovered on High 45 seconds or until melted; stir until smooth.

Dip each apple in melted coating, turning and spreading to coat. Let stand on waxed paper until firm. With fork, drizzle remaining melted coating (reheat if necessary) across coated apples in zigzag fashion to look like mummies. With black paste icing, pipe eyes on each apple. Let stand until set.

1 package refrigerated chocolate chip cookies 1 container (1 lb.) vanilla creamy ready-to-spread frosting Neon orange and green food colors Candy eyes Heat oven to 350 degrees. Bake cookies as directed on package. Cool completely.

Separate frosting into 2 small bowls; add food colors to make desired neon orange and neon green colors.

Spoon colored frostings into decorating bags fitted with flat basket weave tip No. 45. Squeeze bag to pipe frosting in crisscross pattern over cookies to look like mummy bandages. Attach candy eyes. Let stand until set, about 20 minutes.

HAM AND CHEESE CRESCENT MUMMY Take the spook out of deciding what’s for Halloween dinner with this simple ham and cheese crescent mummy!

1 can refrigerated crescent dinner rolls 4 slices (3 oz.) cheddar cheese 8 slices (3 oz.) cooked deli ham 1 egg 1 tablespoon water 2 medium pitted ripe olives Heat oven to 375 degrees. Spray large cookie sheet with cooking spray.

Unroll can of dough. Place on cookie sheet.

If using crescent rolls, firmly press perforations and seams to seal.

Place cheese slices, overlapping slightly, down center of dough, leaving 1-inch border at each end. Top evenly with ham slices.

With kitchen scissors or sharp knife, make cuts 1 inch apart on long sides of dough rectangle to within 1/2 inch of filling. Alternately cross strips over filling. Bring short ends over filling, and press to seal. In small bowl, beat egg and water. Brush dough with egg mixture. Top with olives for mummy eyes.

Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until deep golden brown. Cut into crosswise slices.

Nov. 2 TJ's Guitar and Music Program Gala Fund-Raiser This Musical Gala is the annual fundraiser for TJ's Guitar & Music Program at the Fort Smith Boys and Girls Clubs. It is the only free music program for kids in the area, in memory of musician T.J. Cunningham. Since 2009, the program has supplied musical instruments such as guitars, keyboards and drums, and music lessons to teach kids to play them. Many in the program would not be able to afford either. Kids come out in droves to learn to play and some of them will go on to play for a lifetime. The gala offers great rock ‘n’ roll performed by top area musicians. Performers include Big City Moses Band, the Dodging Bullets All-Star Band with special guests, the Cabbage Head Horn Section. Learn more about the natural history of Massard Prairie and the project to restore it from Ben Geren park administrator Jay Randolph at 7 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Fort Smith Public Library. As one of three naturally occurring prairies located near Fort Smith, Massard Prairie was first described in Thomas Nuttall’s “A Journal of Travels into the Arkansas Territory During the Year 1819.” Remnants of the Massard Prairie that once covered more than 10,000 acres in western Arkansas still exist at Ben Geren Golf Course, where a restoration project, headed by Randolph, is under way to bring back the native grasses, wildflowers and wildlife of the original ecosystem.

North Forest Lights begin in late October at Crystal Bridges North Forest Lights is a nighttime multimedia experience unlike anything Crystal Bridges Museum of America Art has ever presented.

Five distinct installations will bring the soul of the North Forest to life with light, sound and sensory effects in a captivating, unforgettable adventure. It will begin Oct. 26.

Crystal Bridges partnered with Montreal-based multimedia and entertainment studio Moment Factory to bring this concept to life. Each encounter that visitors will experience on their walk through the Ozark woods translates nature’s secret music and hidden communication into a symphony of light and sound. The experience invites people to reconnect with nature and art while helping them to feel part of it.

• Forest Orchestra – like an orchestra tuning itself into harmony with its surroundings, visitors will experience a variety of music styles from our region’s ragtime, to bluegrass, folk and classical traditions, which will be enhanced by a light show.

The experience will be open in the evening hours after sunset, located in the first loop of the North Forest. Tickets will be available soon.

The five distinct installations that will come to life with light, sound, and special effects are: • Crystal Grove – waves of light ripple through the trees in jewel-like fragments.

• The Bridge – while crossing the bridge, visitors will become enveloped in a thick fog as light pixels give the illusion of water interacting with the forest.

• The Hearth – visitors are drawn to gather and commune around a digital fire pit, where a sculpture made of tree limbs and twigs appears to float as it is consumed by flames.

• Whispering Tree – visitors are invited to engage in private dialogue with a massive tree as lighting effects respond to the conversation.

Iconic local company tells its story in new exhibit at the Fort Smith Museum of History OCT

A new, year-long exhibit will put the history of ArcBest and ABF Freight on display, as well as illustrate the company’s contributions and innovations in its first century.

Since it was founded as a local freight hauler in 1923, the company has transformed into a full-scale provider of end-to-end supply chain services designed to help customers solve their own business challenges.

Today, ArcBest has 10 campuses and more than 240 service centers across North America with more than 13,000 employees ready to serve customers around the globe. Many area residents have been employed with this long-time, Fort Smith-based company and personly knew its founders and leading executives. They have all played a role in the growth and success of ArcBest.

The ArcBest exhibit team is a collaboration of customer experience/marketing professionals Jennifer Faldon, Chris Harris, Jim Perry, Bradley Burgin, Kerry Ward, Jamie Lambdin, and legal department consultant Diane White, with oversight by David Humphrey, vice president of investor relations.

Drawing on archives, Air Force sources, libraries and his own recollections as a navigator, Higgins details Cold War confrontations and strategies that emerged during the aircraft's 1950-1974 service life. As a cargo hauler, the large prop plane could carry tanks, guns, trucks and other heavy equipment, while in its passengercarrying role it could carry 200 fully equipped troops on its double decks or 127 litter patients and their attendants. It was the only aircraft of its time capable of transporting fully assembled heavy equipment such as tanks and bulldozers. It also was used to transport nuclear weapons between air bases by the Strategic Air Command. There are fewer than 10 of the mighty craft surviving, most on static display at air bases and aviation museums. Books are available for purchase and Higgins will sign books after the talk. Stilley, a man raising a family in Hogscald Holler near Eureka Springs, believed he received a divine calling to give children musical instruments. With simple tools, he worked for 25 years to create more than 200 instruments from wood scraps and found objects. Windgate Art & Design will hold an opening reception for ‘Two Rooms,’ a solo exhibition by artist Steven Wise.

The exhibition is comprised of two bodies of work: D ... FORTY and O ... is for OZARKS. Each series coincides with a different time in the artist’s life. The paintings of the D series are united by their size (20X16 inches) and the idea to create 40 paintings at 40.

O ... is for OZARKS is a series of new paintings derived from Wise’s exploration of the natural world of Northwest Arkansas. Twenty large works were inspired by the Ozark mountains.

Wise has had solo exhibitions at Simpson College, Henderson State University, Spiva Center for the Arts, Arts Center of the Ozarks and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

His work has been exhibited in competition such as the Annual Delta Exhibition at the Arkansas Arts Center and the Arkansas Arts Council's Annual Small Works on Paper. Wise teaches art in the Rogers Public Schools.

The exhibition continues through Dec. 6.

What else is new online? We have vintage film video!

We’re creating an ongoing project to digitize locally shot, 8mm and Super 8mm film from three interesting Fort Smith collections. Check in on Throwback Thursdays for the premieres of new, HD digitized films of vintage views. Online now: footage of Southside High School students leaving school on a winter day in 1974. Could you be seen there? Could your parents? With permission of First Christian Church of Fort Smith and the descendants of Judge Paul Wolfe, see the entire congregation of the church in both 1936 and (in color) 1954. There will be many short digitized film clips with fascinating, nostalgic glimpses of the not-so-distant past.

Does your family still have 8mm and Super 8 film? Perhaps you can loan the film to Entertainment Fort Smith to have it digitized and returned (free) with your permission to share certain footage such as parades or other community, school or historic events. You’ll receive high- quality, HD digital video of your entire film.

Nov. 9 Veterans Day Parade at Chaffee Crossing With the Historic District at Chaffee Crossing as its backdrop and route, this regional Veterans Day Parade has grown to become a grand tradition. Parking is plentiful, many participate and the backdrop of the former Fort Chaffee, with its museums and preserved barbershop where, famously, Elvis got his G.I. haircut, is perfect. Nov. 11 Veterans Day A respectful ceremony and wreath-laying will be held at the Fort Smith National Cemetery, 522 South 6th Street, Fort Smith, Ark.
