WOODEN STAND PROJECT FOR MUTUA MADRID OPEN

MASTER PLAN

This is the first project I have ever designed as a student of the School of Architecture at the University of Ferrara, tutored by Professor P. Valle. The project was still clear in my mind, but I could not find the original hand-made drawings. So, I decided to redesign the house with the help of my computer and, of course, I made some changes, according to my present taste and knowledge. The subject was to project a terraced house, fully reproducible, inside a narrow 6x30 meters parcel. First of all, I decided that it would be interesting to create two potentially separate units: a studio on the ground floor and a duplex on the first/second floor. Even if the project includes a shared garden, accesses and paths are almost never shared by the owners? and the garage could belong either to the studio, or to the other apartment. The little divergence of one of the external walls has been introduced in order to reduce the tightening perception that visitors may experiment while walking on the path, not to mention the fact that this shape would produce more interesting and enjoyable spaces.

MASTER PLAN

Casa del Lector is located inside the Matadero Arts Centre, one of the most important multidisciplinary spaces for the promotion of arts and culture in Madrid. Its aim is to promote and develop the culture of books and reading, in its broadest sense, encouraging the interaction of heterogeneous audiences (both general and professional, both young and adult) and different kinds of art. According to the idea of reading as a way to interpret reality, the sensory garden has been thought as a place to observe nature inside an urban context, to understand it with the five senses, to recognize the relation between the elements of the vegetation, to create an interactive space in order to promote dialogue, cultural exchange and learning.

MASTER PLAN

The so called “Macrolotto Zero” is a hybrid (residential-industrial) neighbourhood located near the historical centre of Prato. The fact that it hosts the third European Chinese community (after Paris and Milan), together with the high-density housing and the lack of quality public space produced many problems in terms of integration. The aim of this work has been to define a specific approach that takes into account cultural diversity as a development opportunity for the city and to propose an urban regeneration program of the area in order to give it back to its citizens, without driving out the Chinese community.

STRUCTURE OF PROPOSALS OBJECTIVES, STRATEGIES AND ACTIONS

The area is located on the west side of the historical centre of San Gimignano, between the ancient city walls and the new-born agricultural park. San Gimignano is commonly known because of two things: the characteristic skyline of its hamlet, made of a large number of incredibly wellpreserved towers; the production of some high-quality food products, like wine, olive oil and saffron. The aim of this project is to create a connection between land and village, converting this half-abandoned and discontinuous belt in a spread gate for the agricultural park.

STRATEGY

ACTION_01

Traditional Agriculture Week Type of action: international convention Periodicity: annual Users: professionals (academics, researchers, experts)

ACTION_04

International convention entirely dedicated to the discussion about sustainable agriculture, in order to stress the importance of traditional techniques.

Gastronomical events Type of action: typical taste / sell Periodicity: weekly / monthly Users: residents + tourists S. Gimignano is already famous for the large number of events related to the selling and tasting of typical products. The aim of this action is to improve the existing activities, intensifying the agenda, creating dedicated spaces within the regeneration area or simply linking them to the territorial marketing strategy.

Type of action: management organ Periodicity: permanent Users: professionals + residents

ACTION_07

Service & Consulting Centre for Farmers Type of action: education + consulting Periodicity: permanent Users: professionals (farmers, agricultural businessmen) Training meetings, workshops and practical activities will be organized by the Service & Consulting Centre for Farmers in order to diffuse knowledge about sustainable agriculture techniques. A specific Agency for professional consulting and entrepreneurial project development will be created. The Centre will be located in the Southern Area, next to the Authority for the Agricultural Park Management.

A museum will be created in order to retrace the history of S. Gimignano’s traditional agriculture and the existing relationship between rural world and ancient hamlet. A secondary goal of this structure will be to inform about the double role played by the agriculture within economical development and landscape protection. Several activities would be organized, such as guided tours, video screenings or field trips to local farms, addressed both to young and adult audience.

ACTION_03

Authority for the Agricultural Park Management

The aim of the Authority for the Agricultural Park Management is to administrate park spaces and activities. It represents the strategic link between the park and the city. For that reason, both residents and the main local actors will be represented in the council. The offices will be located within the Southern Area, as a result of the redesign project of the existing buildings.

Due to the annual recurrence of the event, the project does not include the creation of a specific room for the conferences, that will take place at Palazzo Pratellesi.

ACTION_02

At local scale

To encourage local agricultural development and the use of traditional methods as a landscape protection strategy, in order to restore the ancient connection between the city and its surroundings.

To promote San Gimignano as a benchmark for agriculture and sustainability in Tuscany.

ACTION_06

The “agri-jogging” path Type of action: sport + health+ education Periodicity: permanent Users: residents + tourists This action is about the creation of a jogging path all around the area. It has been thought as a three-speed path (for pedestrians, runners and cyclists), aiming at putting together the sport experience with the educational one. When users pass through the cultivated landscape (vineyards, olive tree groves, urban orchards, etc.), they can read information about the vegetation, as if they were in botanic garden especially dedicated to agriculture.

ACTION_08

Biomass Plant Type of action: energy + environmental education Periodicity: permanente Users: professionals + residents A biomass plant will be created in order to guarantee the energetic self-sufficiency of the project. The plant will be fed by the combustion of organic waste coming from the Agricultural Park. The plant will be located in Zone 2, near the new parking, in order both to facilitate logistical operations and create the smallest visual impact. Guided tours could be organized to raise consciousness about environmental issues.

open competition - 5th place

Between Zone 1 and Zone 2, some structures will be dedicated to retail activities for the selling of agricultural goods produced within the Agricultural Park. The difference between this action and Action 3 is that, in this case, the products sold are mostly fruit and vegetables, and the market is mainly for residents. So, the existence of two markets (one for tourists, one for residents), as well as the absence of middlemen, would result in lower prices of first need products, yet still being sustainable for farmers.

THE PROJECT

planning

The area has been thought as a linear park hosting several functions and events, in some cases addressed to the residents, in some others to external users, but all strictly related to the agri-culture development. A sport path is developed all along the area, as a physical connection within the different portions of the park.
