Penultimate pre-Chase race an exciting preview of contest to come

W

ith the finish of the Emory Healthcare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the field for the Chase for the Sprint Cup is essentially set, even though there’s one more race to run, at Richmond International Raceway on Saturday night, before the start of the 10race run to the title. Only the bottom two positions are at stake, and Greg Biffle and Clint Bowyer are still fairly secure. All Biffle has to beat is one driver at Richmond, and Bowyer has a 117-point lead over 13th-place Ryan Newman. Even more importantly, several drivers and teams, besides having clinched Chase berths, appear to be peaking just in time to make spirited runs to the title. Atlanta race winner Tony Stewart and runner-up Carl Edwards both have been running strong of late, but their Atlanta runs were among their best of the season. “We need this momentum,” Stewart said after taking his first win of the year. “This team has been doing an awesome job for the last two and a half or three months, and we’ve been kind of quiet this year, we took off slow but thank goodness … these guys with this Chevrolet have been doing a great job. “The pit stops have been good. The cars have been good. With [crew chief] Darian [Grubb] and these guys at our shop, it has just been really fun the last couple of

months.” Third-finishing Jimmie Johnson, the four-time and defending Cup champion, said he and his crew finally hit on a chassis set-up that responds positively to midrace adjustments, something that had eluded them in recent weeks. “We have had some problems on the mile-and-a-half, two-mile tracks,” Johnson said. “[But] with the set-up we brought [to Atlanta] and the way we worked on things, it seemed we could adjust the car and improve throughout the night and be there at the end of the race.” Denny Hamlin, who like Johnson has five wins going into the Chase, was blazing fast until a blown engine sidelined his polewinning No. 11 Toyota after he’d led seven times for 74 laps. “I know if we had the reliability that we could win this championship, and the odds would be pretty good to win the championship if I can just keep it together for 10 weeks,” he said. Kurt Busch was fast at Atlanta, even on worn tires, and he salvaged a sixth-place finish even with damage from a late-race run-in with Kasey Kahne. Busch said he and his team still have work to do if they’re going to seize the momentum in the Chase. “We’ve got to turn some things around to see what we have against these guys if we’re going to run for the title,” he said.

His brother Kyle Busch was able to score a top-five finish despite losing a lap early on, and points leader Kevin Harvick was fast until a blown tire relegated him to a 33rd-place finish. Johnson said all that means fans can expect a barn-burner of a Chase. “If you look around, we’re going to have a really exciting Chase,” he said. “There are a lot of teams coming together now.” Edwards agreed, saying he puts a lot more stock in the value of momentum than he once did. “I used to never believe in momentum, but I’ve never run so poorly for so long,” he said. “Now, I’m seeing this turnaround, and it’s been a couple of months, and I think I understand the team more and I understand where we’ve been gaining. “So, for that reason, I believe in this momentum that we have and I believe it will apply to future races. “You can’t do anything about a cut tire or a broken valve spring or something like that, but at least we’ve proven to ourselves the last couple months that we can do it, and that feels good for us.” Johnson said he too sees value in a good start to the final 10 races. “We all look for things to encourage the team, to cheer the guys up and get them rallied around – something to send them off like warriors ready to go and charged up for whatever is out there for them.”

Jamie McMurray, the odd man out at Roush Fenway Racing last year, solidified his status as the surprise story of 2010 by scoring an impressive win in Saturday’s Great Clips 300 Nationwide Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. McMurray – who already this year won the Sprint Cup circuit’s two biggest races, the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400 – outran the Nationwide Series’ hottest driver, Kyle Busch, to give his Nationwide car owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. his first victory of the season. “It means a lot to all of us,” McMurray said of his win for a team that struggled for most of the season and used several different drivers before he came aboard to run the majority of the races. McMurray started seventh, and took the lead for the first time on Lap 65. But in the end, he sped past Brad Keselowski and Busch on a restart with 22 laps to go and drove away to his first Nationwide victory since 2004 at Darlington. Third-finishing Carl Edwards, who was once a teammate of McMurray’s at Roush, said McMurray’s success this year is no surprise to those who know him. “I think Jamie’s showing everybody how good he is this year,” Edwards said. “It’s pretty cool to see him having success. He’s a very humble guy and a good person.” But an even bigger story than McMurray’s victory might have been the turnout for the race. Track officials estimated the crowd at 71,000, and track president Ed Clark said it was easily the biggest crowd ever for a Nationwide race at AMS. That number of fans would more than fill several of the Cup tracks now on the schedule.

No reshuffling Earnhardt team It looks like Lance McGrew will remain as crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr. even though the No. 88 team will miss the cut for the Chase to the Sprint Cup. Team owner Rick Hendrick said Saturday that he has no major changes in store for that team. “That’s correct,” he said. “We make decisions as things develop during the season. And right now we’ve got a game plan and we’re sticking to it. Next week and going into the Chase and during the Chase, our plans are for those two guys to be together.”

Bodine, Busch trade barbs Todd Bodine, winner of Friday’s Camping World Truck Series race at Kentucky Speedway, called Kyle Busch a “dirty” driver during his Victory Lane interview, one that was heard by Busch, who went to Victory Lane to confront Bodine about his remarks. Bodine, who spun during the race while racing Busch, later said he was only saying out loud what other NASCAR drivers are saying in private. Todd Bodine Busch said Bodine (NASCAR Photo) was in the wrong. “I thought that was kind of low, but that’s how [Todd] Bodine is,” Busch said of Bodine’s comment. “ It was just a matter of hard racing I thought. He didn’t want me racing him that hard. Maybe next time I’ll lift.”

Site of Atlanta speedway once knew much slower pace SPRINT CUP POINTS ASK RICK!

“Before Atlanta Motor Speedway opened 50 years ago, what was the area like?” A: In many ways it was just like the relatively undeveloped area just outside Turns One and Two. In the mid-1950s, the land now occupied by the superspeedway held mostly small farms, according to Bobby Clower, who has lived in the area all of his 77 years. The farmers raised cattle and grew cotton and wheat. Clower recalled that much of the property where the speedway itself now sits belonged to a farmer named Frank Cook. The Jordan family owned some, as did a man named Robert E. Lee, who had a neighbor by the similar sounding name of Robert Eley. Mr. Cook, initially, was reluctant to go along with the changes that had come to his quiet little farmstead. “When they were coming through with a pipeline, he used his shotgun to keep them at bay until he finally saw the light and let them come through,” Mr. Clower said. “By the time the race track came along, he was at a point in his life when he was ready to give it up.” The land around the race track also was home to the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church. But by the time the race track was being built, the church building had been mostly abandoned, its roof leaking and only an old piano inside. Still, the old structure became part of the early race track lore.

It seems that at some point in the hurried construction of the guardrail in what is now Turns One and Two, some parts of the old church building were used to build a bonfire. Some of the workers that night offered the opinion that it might bring the track bad luck to use parts of the house of the Lord in such a manner. The bonfire story took on a life of its own after rains washed out most of the scheduled races in the track’s early years, forcing costly postponements and dampening fans’ enthusiasm. But the rainouts were a boon for the area farmers, who made pocket money using their tractors to pull race fans’ cars from the muddy parking lots. Richard Little, a local cattleman, remembers his father getting in on the action. “They either pulled the people out or pulled their bumpers off,” he said with a laugh. As with any great change in the landscape of a community, the construction of a race track in a quiet farming area wasn’t greeted with unanimous enthusiasm. Clower’s younger brother, Lonny Clower, was just a teenager when the track began to rise out of the ground, and he didn’t like what he saw, at first. “It was depressing in a way,” he said. “All that land around there had been farmland, and all of the sudden there was this humongous thing taking over our playground.” But Clower, like his brother, eventually became a fan of NASCAR and a fan of the speedway. Today, he works on race weekends helping sell souvenirs at the track. “Later on, everything was good,” he said. Got a question about NASCAR? Ask Rick! E-mail your question to rminter@racintoday.com
