ike the golfers of the PGA playing a course like Augusta National in the Masters, there seems to be something magical that happens when NASCAR’s finest race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The cream always seems to rise to the top. And drivers who appear to have the best years of their careers behind them somehow summon the strength to run with the younger dogs at the famed Brickyard. The list of NASCAR winners at the Brickyard reads like a Who’s Who of the sport – Dale Earnhardt, Dale Jarrett, Ricky Rudd, Bobby Labonte, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Bill Elliott, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart. There are no “fluke” wins so far in NASCAR races at the Brickyard. And, like golfing at the Masters, NASCAR’s graybeards can put on a show at Indy. Dale Jarrett, winner in 1996 and 1999,

came back and ran second in 2004 at age 47. Earnhardt won in ’95 at 44. Elliott won in ’02 at 46, and Rusty Wallace got his third career runner-up finish in ’02 at age 45. Even the younger winners know they’ve done something special by winning at Indy. Jeff Gordon, who won the inaugural Brickyard 400 in 1994 at age 22, knows as well as anyone what place that track and that race hold in the history of the sport. He spent many of his formative years living just down the road from Indy, in the town of Pittsboro, dreaming of one day driving a race car on that storied stretch of asphalt and bricks. In those days, few could have imagined that the bastion of openwheel racing would one day open its doors to NASCAR. “I love the fact that we get to go there in a stock car,” Gordon said during his weekly press briefing at Chicagoland Speedway. “It’s a

lot of fun to bring NASCAR to the Brickyard.” Gordon went on to say that winning at the Brickyard requires a well-tuned car, and that goes a long way in explaining why the wins at Indy only seem to go to top-echelon drivers and only to the best race teams. “You have to have the car really balanced out right, and it’s tough to do because you have four unique corners,” Gordon said. “Even though they look the same shape, they’re all different. “It’s a hard place to pass at so track position is extremely important. Qualifying well is important there and then we’ve been seeing a lot these days with softer rear springs versus bigger rear springs and what downforce package seems to be the best combination at a track like Indy where you have these long straightaways where you want to try to get down the straightaways good, but have the downforce in the car for the

grip through the corners.” The team and driver that seem to have Indy figured out the best are Gordon’s teammate Jimmie Johnson and the crew of his No. 48 Chevrolet. He has a chance this year to join an elite roster of four-time winners at Indy, a list that includes both open-wheel and NASCAR racers. “It would be a huge honor to join the list of four-time winners,” Johnson said. “Just to win there once is a career maker for anyone, so to have three victories there means a lot to me. “When I went [to Indy] to do the winner’s circle appearance a month or so ago, I was there with [four-time Indy 500 winner] Rick Mears, and to see him as a fourtime winner and to talk about his experiences at the track and what it’s done for his life and career was neat and helped me open my eyes to his world and the openwheel world there. “So I’m pumped and excited.”

The Carl Edwards-Brad Keselowski rivalry ratcheted up another notch on Saturday at Gateway International Raceway when Edwards wrecked Keselowski as the two raced toward the start-finish line for the final time. Edwards won the race. Keselowski wound up being struck by several oncoming cars (pictured below) and was credited with 14th place. “Wrecking down the straightaway is never cool whether it’s at 200 miles per hour or 120,” Keselowski told reporters after climbing from his car. The 200-miles-per-hour reference was to a wreck earlier this year at Atlanta, where a bump from Edwards at the fastest part of the track sent Keselowski flying into the catchfence at an estimated 200 mph. Edwards admitted in his televised Victory Lane interview from Gateway that he intentionally wrecked Keselowski as payback for an earlier incident in which Keselowski bumped Edwards out of the groove to get the lead. “I just couldn’t let him take the win from me,” Edwards said. “My guys work way too hard for that. We had a great restart. My guys built me a great car. We came to the checkered flag – and I hate to see stuff tore up – but we came here to win, and he took it from us there in Turn 1. “I’m sure some of them don’t like that win, Brad Keselowski fans and stuff, but, man, I just couldn’t let him take it from me. I had to do what I had to do.” The strongest comments about the latest incident came from Keselowski’s father Bob, a former driver. “Carl flipped out like he did at Atlanta and tried to kill the kid,” Bob Keselowski said in a live TV interview. “I’m sick and tired of this. I’ll get my own uniform back on and take care of this. “He ain’t going to kill my boy.” Keselowski continues to lead the Nationwide Series standings, with Edwards in second place, 168 points back.

The night the lights went out Friday night might best be remembered as the night the lights went out at Gateway. Just prior to the start of the Camping World Truck Series race at the St. Louis track, the local power went out, forcing the postponement of the race until a hot Saturday afternoon. Kevin Harvick, despite a stiff neck, was even hotter, leading 143 of 160 laps to get the win over Brad Keselowski. Johnny Sauter finished third, followed by Todd Bodine, who extended his points lead to 101 over Aric Almirola, who finished eighth.

Hemric wins Legends event Charlotte Motor Speedway took advantage of an off-weekend for the Sprint Cup Series to host the Legends Million, which offered $250,000 to the winner of the main event, which was run Saturday on the quarter-mile track on the frontstretch of the superspeedway. Kannapolis, N.C., native Daniel Hemric took the big prize, passing Griffin, Ga., driver Doug Stevens with 10 laps to go in the 100-lap feature. Sprint Cup regular David Ragan, who grew up racing Legends cars, finished fourth.

Drivers speak up on potential changes to the Chase ASK RICK! “What do drivers think about the possibility of making changes to the Chase format in an attempt to get the ‘Game Seven’ feel that Chairman Brian France seeks for the finale of the Sprint Cup Series season?” A: As with many issues that affect NASCAR and its drivers, one of the best ways to gauge the mood in the garage is to check in with Jeff Burton, who has become the “go-to” guy for many a media member looking to monitor the pulse of the driver corps. Burton, in his comments to reporters at Chicagoland Speedway recently, said that he’s looking for a format that rewards drivers and teams for steady and strong performances over the course of the entire season. “If NASCAR came here today and said the way we’re going to determine this is that whoever wins the last race of the year is the champion, I would think that is insane,” he said. But he also said the sport is better off since NASCAR instituted the 10-race, season-ending run for the title. “I love the history of our sport, but I think that it’s more exciting than it was,” he said. “I’m a sports fan; I love to watch sports. Right now, today, the intensity level and the pressure that is on us with [seven] races to go [before the start of the Chase], and then there is

another 10 after that, is more than it has ever been because of the Chase. “The more pressure there is on the competitors, the more fun it is for the fans to watch. So if NASCAR does determine to make a change, I hope they keep in mind that the body of work that you have done should count. “The way our system works, I don’t think you’re going to have a Superbowl scenario where you have two teams, one race, and winner take all. I don’t think that’s appropriate for our sport.” Another straight-shooter in the garage is Dale Earnhardt Jr., and he said he’s not totally sold on the need for change to the Chase. “I really think that the argument for that is split dead down the middle, and there are great positives to each argument,” he said. “I struggle, really, thinking about that and deciding which side of that argument I’m on.” He said that while NASCAR seems to be going with what fans say they want today, he’s not sure that’s best for the long run. “After this, what’s next?” he said. “It’s sort of like when I started giving people bonuses in ’98, and I was so happy because we won a championship and I wanted to give everybody a big bonus and my daddy said, ‘If you’re going to race for a long time, you might want to start off small.’ “After we make this kind of change, where do you go from there? That’s pretty radical … That sort of extreme is scary to the traditionalist, but it fits the world we’re living in today.” Got a question about NASCAR? Ask Rick!
