Suddenly, Almirola is on a roll Aric Almirola’s stock certainly has gone up in recent weeks. He won Saturday’s Camping World Truck Series race at Michigan International Speedway, his second win in the past four races. And he’s been chosen to stand in for four-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson should Johnson have to vacate the seat of his No. 48 Chevrolet to be present for the birth of his first child. At Michigan, Almirola led only the final seven laps of a race that saw a track record 20 lead changes among 10 drivers, and he’s now second in the points standings, just 55 points behind Todd Bodine. Billy Ballew, Almirola’s team owner in the truck series, said in the team’s post-race interview that there’s little doubt about Almirola’s talent, and that’s why he picked him to drive his flagship No. 51 Toyota when Kyle Busch left to form his own team. Almirola moved over from the team’s other entry, the No. 15 Tundra. “First and foremost, I am so proud of what we have been able to achieve and of the success with a very limited budget in the 15 truck when Aric [Almirola] drove it last year,” Ballew said. “Then he drove the 51 in a couple races, and we were running for the owner’s championship and there was no doubt what was possible … “There was never anything to discuss, it was a given.”

NASCAR dads After helping sons to the top, fathers must adjust to the sidelines

F

ather’s Day on the NASCAR circuit is an interesting time. Most drivers in today’s Sprint Cup Series got there in large part because their fathers supported their racing from the beginning and in many cases paid for the race cars they drove in attracting the attention of the big NASCAR teams. But once a driver reaches the top levels of the sport, there’s really no place for dad. Some, like Joey Logano’s father Tom Logano, are very visible at the track and remain a big part of their son’s racing. But that can be problematic, as illustrated by the controversy surrounding the elder Logano’s participation in a postrace incident at Pocono Raceway between his son and Kevin Harvick. Tom Logano appeared to be urging his son to confront Harvick, and some say he shoved a TV reporter. It’s not the first time Tom Logano has been involved in a post-race pit-road incident. Other dads, like Tony Stewart’s father Nelson Stewart, are there at the track most weeks but go out of their way to stay in the shadows. Nelson Stewart can be as fiery as his son, but he’s come to realize that his place is now on the sidelines. Other dads rarely even show up at the track. Logano, in meeting with reporters at Michigan last week, defended his father’s role in the incident at Pocono the week before.

“My father, I love him to death, and he’s there for me,” he said. “So I think that’s something that’s really cool, and a lot of people don’t have that. “He’s always been by my side my whole life and maybe it was a position that maybe he shouldn’t have been there, but he’s a father and I bet 99 percent of the fathers would’ve been there anyway.” Harvick, not surprisingly, saw it differently. “His father needs to stick back and act like all of the rest of the dads, and be happy that his kid’s here,” Harvick said. “This isn’t Little League baseball anymore. He just needs to stay away.” Harvick went on to say that his own dad is supportive, but there are others who can

offer him better advice on dealing with the challenges of being a Sprint Cup driver. “That is where I think my family sits,” he said. “They’ve never experienced anything at this level, and it’s hard to take that advice from people who haven’t ever experienced anything like that … “For me, I was fortunate to have Rusty Wallace, Dale Jarrett and those guys. They were always able to give me advice and do things. When I needed things, those were the guys.” Eddie Wood, in addition to being a Sprint Cup team owner, has been a racing dad to his son Jon. But for the most part he’s stayed in the background there. “When Jon was playing ball and my daughter Jordan was playing volleyball and soccer, I wouldn’t even sit with my wife because she was always yelling,” Wood said. “I tried to use the same [hands-off] approach in racing.” Wood did serve as a spotter for his son in some Nationwide races, but that didn’t work out too well. “I got him spun out at Atlanta,” he said. “I cleared him and he wasn’t clear. “I retired after that.” Wood said that when his son is racing, he generally sits in the grandstands, and listens in on the team radio but doesn’t hit the “talk” button. “I still have the same emotions,” he said. “But you wouldn’t ever know it.”

Testing ‘on the tire, at the track’ beats simulations ASK RICK!

“Could NASCAR’s testing ban use a tweak or two?” A: Although few in the sport see a need to go back to the aggressive, exhaustive and expensive testing that went on before the ban was enacted in the interest of saving teams money, there are some valid points being made for a limited number of tests at tracks where Sprint Cup Series races are held. At one time teams could test whenever and wherever they could schedule it. Then NASCAR banned independent testing at tracks where the series raced. Teams got around that by going to places like Kentucky Speedway, which didn’t host Cup races but offered conditions similar to numerous Cup tracks. Then testing at most all NASCAR-sanctioned tracks was banned, which meant that teams began using computer simulations to perfect set-ups. That’s expensive too, and some teams are better at it than others. Car owner Jack Roush said on last week’s NASCAR teleconference that his team hasn’t done as good as it should at simulations, and he said he’s been lobbying NASCAR to allow some at-track testing. “The extent to which our setups have not been close as we arrived [at a race track for a race weekend] based on the lack of testing and the uncompetitiveness of our simulations has resulted in the frustration that everybody has had,” he said. “One of the other things I had discussions with NASCAR about last weekend was

the idea of letting some of the testing come back. “Right now if you don’t have a simulation that’s as good as the next man’s simulation, it doesn’t matter how good your driver is or how able your crew chief is or how good your engine is; you just can’t get around the race track. And until you sort out what you need at that race track, you’re playing from a position of disadvantage.” He said he felt like NASCAR officials were at least listening to his arguments. “I think that we’d have less reliance on our simulations, and on the technicians that are behind the scenes, if we were able to go to some of the race tracks and test on the tire, at the track, in close proximity to the race. [Then] this sensitivity to and this importance of all the simulations will be diminished,” he said. Roush said he’d like to see each team get eight to ten tests a year. “That would give you a chance to test at all the race tracks, at all the different kinds of tracks – the short tracks, the intermediates, the restrictor-plate tracks, and the road-race tracks,” he said. “That would give you a chance to test at all those with every driver and every car so that every crew chief would have for himself an idea of what he needed and not just have to rely on the simulations that the engineers would propose.” Opening up testing could be a boon for the promotional efforts at each track, if these test sessions involved a short interview session with the local media. That could help in the overall promotion of the sport at a time when attendance and TV ratings are in a slump. Got a question about NASCAR? Ask Rick! E-mail your question to rminter@racintoday.com

Logano’s ol’ Kentucky home Earlier in his career, young Joey Logano spent a lot of hot days running laps by himself in testing at Kentucky Speedway, which was a popular testing venue before NASCAR changed its rules on testing venues. Logano’s finally able to capitalize on all those test sessions. In the past three Nationwide Series races at Kentucky, Logano has won both the pole and the race, and in doing so set a new series record for consecutive wins from the pole at a Nationwide track. “I guess hard work pays off,” Logano said in his winner’s interview. “I used to come here about once every three weeks when we were testing all the time here. “I had a million laps around this place. I said if I ever got to race here I am going to be pretty good. One day I got to race here, and it’s worked out pretty good for me so far. “I guess hard work pays off in this situation.” The latest win also came at the end of a long week of controversy over a post-race incident he had with Kevin Harvick at Pocono after the two collided on the track in the closing laps.

Wisc. to Calif., with no layovers For the double-dipping drivers who are running both the full Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series schedules, this weekend’s commute between race tracks is the toughest of them all. The Cup circuit is running at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., while the Nationwide Series is at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc. Team owner Jack Roush said his two doubledipping drivers, Carl Edwards and Paul Menard, are relying on a really fast airplane to shorten their commute. “I understand that Paul Menard’s father’s Citation X is going to be used, which is the fastest means of public civilian transportation possible,” Roush said. “They’re going to make that trip together. I’ll hunker down in Sears Point and help the guys there as much as I can. “Weekends like we had [a week ago] where the drivers can physically participate in a major part of both programs, if I am close enough and if my Premier – Hawker Beechcraft Premier – is fast enough, I’m anxious to be in both places.”
