Smoldering rancor over All-Star Race flares up at Coca-Cola 600

T

he dust-up between Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch in NASCAR’s All-Star Race continued to generate buzz well into the Coca-Cola 600 race weekend, with both drivers obviously far from putting the incident completely behind them. They did manage to avoid each other on the track during the 600, but they had plenty to say beforehand. During his regular meeting with the media on Thursday at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Busch fielded question after question about the incident late

in the All-Star Race when Busch tried to pass Hamlin. To Busch’s credit, he maintained his cool, never really losing his temper. “I think my frustration right now is just continually having to talk about the same thing over and over again,” Busch said in response to the 11th straight question about the Hamlin incident. “You’re trying to hit something, and I feel like I’m answering what you’re asking. “For me, I’m over the Denny Hamlin issue. It’s done. We’re moving forward, and we look forward to the rest of the year and the 600 this weekend. We’re going to work together.” He added that he didn’t regret threatening Hamlin over his radio during the All-Star Race, but added that he didn’t really mean he wanted to kill him. “Do I regret saying what I said over the radio? Absolutely not,” Busch said. “It was the heat of the moment, that’s who I am, that’s my expression and I’m not going to be sorry for what I say … “It wasn’t joking, but it wasn’t going to happen, it wasn’t meant.” Hamlin, who appeared before the same media contingent later

in the day, defended his driving in the All-Star Race, saying Busch should have slowed down instead of running into the wall when the gap on the outside of Hamlin shrank to less than a car’s width. “He has a gas pedal and a brake just like I do,” Hamlin said. “He could choose to check up and pass me in the next corner or put his car in the fence like what happened. That’s just part of it, and I think he expected me to do that there and I just wasn’t willing to do it at that point.” But as Hamlin’s session wore on, he took a few verbal shots at Busch, saying his teammate needs to calm down some before he can contend for a title. “Kyle [Busch] brings this stuff up himself, and he gets mad at the media for asking him questions about his blowups and stuff, but he does it to himself,” Hamlin said. “I don’t want to be part of it. Any drama that he wants to create or anything is on him. Anything he says on the radio is on him. All I’m going to say – and I’m going to be done with it – is each year I think Kyle’s going to grow out of it, and he just doesn’t. “Until he puts it all together,

Denny Hamlin at Charlotte Motor Speedway May 21 practicing for the NASCAR All-Star Race. (NASCAR photo) that’s when he’ll become a champion. Right now he just doesn’t have himself all together.” When asked about his own maturing process, Hamlin apparently couldn’t resist slinging one last barb at Busch. He said his growing-up moment occurred when veteran Tony Stewart left Gibbs, leaving Hamlin the senior driver on the team. “I didn’t say that I was going to take over this team or be the leader of this team, but somebody’s got to be the leader,” he said. “It ain’t going to be Kyle.”

Navigating Pocono; Indy 500/Coke 600 ‘twofer’? ASK RICK!

“Of the three unique turns at Pocono Raceway, which do the drivers find difficult and why?” A: It’s pretty much a toss-up. Each of Pocono’s turns were patterned after turns at other famous race tracks. Turn One, with 14 degrees of banking, is like the old Trenton Speedway. The second one, known as the Tunnel Turn, at nine degrees, is like Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and Turn Three, with six degrees of banking, is like the Milwaukee Mile. Jeff Gordon, a four-time Pocono winner, said all of Pocono’s turns are challenging. “I think that’s what makes Pocono so special,” he said. “I’ve always said that the Tunnel Turn is one of my favorites but also one of my least favorites because when you hit it right, it’s just so incredible and such a great feeling; and it’s such a thrill to go through there. “But when you don’t hit it right, it’s the most physical corner there is on the track because you lose so much momentum and time, and you’re hitting the steering wheel because you messed it up. And it’s such a short corner, but it’s really fast. I like that corner. “But the most challenging one is probably the third turn where it’s just really flat and really fast and it’s really difficult to get it right.” Gordon said Pocono would be easier to navigate at speed if drivers were allowed to shift gears during each lap, as they did a few years back.

“I feel like we’d see a little bit more passing opportunities if we could shift, but I also understand with the [engine] rpms where we were getting in a range, financially, that was getting a little bit out of control,” he said. “It’s still very challenging and a fun track. It really challenges the teams and engineers, and there are a lot of different theories right now on what makes you go fast at a place like Pocono that might apply to Indianapolis. “Pocono is one of those tracks where everybody sort of uses it as a test session for Indianapolis because Indy is such an important race and prestigious … “It seems like if you get yourself right there, it gives you a good opportunity to possibly find something for Indy. But it’s always fun and challenging.” Q: How likely is it that a driver will one day cash in on Bruton Smith’s offer to anyone who can win the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day? A: Jeff Gordon said Juan Pablo Montoya is the only likely candidate. Montoya is a former Indy 500 winner, and his car owner Chip Ganassi is also a winning owner on the Indy racing side. “This whole Mario Andretti-jumping from one car to the next, to the next, to the next, that doesn’t happen anymore. It’s not like that,” Gordon said. “You have dedicated teams with engineers and drivers and that is why they go fast is because of that. I think the only one that has a shot at doing that is Juan Pablo Montoya. Guys want to go run the double, that is great, it is cool. But they are not going to win it.” Got a question about NASCAR? NOTEBOOK

Ganassi, Penske split victories Two of auto racing’s premier team owners squared off in two major Memorial Day classics, with Chip Ganassi winning the Indianapolis 500 with driver Dario Franchitti but losing a close battle to Roger Penske in the Coca-Cola 600 as Penske’s Kurt Busch beat Ganassi’s Jamie McMurray in a late-race duel at Charlotte. “My old buddy Penske beat me tonight,” Ganassi said at Charlotte, but he was smiling too as McMurray continued to be impressive as driver of the team’s No. 1 Chevrolet. His runnerup finish was his third in the past five Sprint Cup races. Kurt Busch, in winning his first Coke 600 after never finishing in the top 10 in NASCAR’s longest race, also gave Penske his first pointspaying win at Charlotte. The two won last week’s Sprint All-Star Race, but it’s a non-points event. Kurt Busch’s Dodge was dominant for much of the 600, even in the daylight hours. McMurray came on strong later in the evening, but his car was better on long runs while Busch prevailed in short sprints. After the race’s last caution, Busch got out of the pits ahead of McMurray and pulled away at the end. He gave his Steve Addington-led crew much of the credit for making his car a winner. “Everybody on this team pulls the rope in the same direction,” he said. With his victory Busch moved up three spots in the standings and emerged as one of the drivers who might dethrone four-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, who crashed in the 600 and fell three spots in points. McMurray’s finish moved him up two spots to 15th, but he’s just 26 points out of the top 12 that will compete for the title over the final 10 races of the season. Kyle Busch finished third in the 600, followed by Mark Martin and last year’s winner David Reutimann.

Nationwide points shake-up? NASCAR’s Nationwide Series is in for a big shake-up, points-wise, this weekend. After a long stretch where the Nationwide Series didn’t really conflict with the Sprint Cup Series, this weekend finds the Cup drivers racing at Pocono, Pa., and the Nationwide Series at Nashville, Tenn. Only three drivers – Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards and Paul Menard, are set to commute back and forth between the two races. Kyle Busch, who came from two laps down to win at Charlotte and is just 11 points behind points leader Keselowski, isn’t planning on making the trip to Nashville. Neither is third-place Kevin Harvick. Greg Biffle and Joey Logano, both in the top 10 in points, aren’t going either. “I’m going to miss running with those guys and I’m going to miss seeing [Jason] Ratcliff [crew chief] for a few weeks,” Busch said. “I feel it’s a good thing, it’s for the best, it’s for the Cup program and making sure that we keep our focus there to try to win this championship in that 18 M&M’s car. “For myself, it’s going to be frustrating to see that 18 car running with someone else besides myself in it, yet it’s good for Brad Coleman to get the experience that he needs to further on his career.” Edwards said that even with some of his fellow Cup drivers out of the Nationwide points picture, it’s no sure thing that one of the three remaining ones will take the title. “There are some pretty good drivers out there,” he said. “I don’t think it matters if there are Cup drivers there or not, the competition is really stiff. There are guys out there that are running really well. We just have to keep our head down and keep going forward.”
