BINGAMAN AND ENMMC AUXILIARY HONORED AT FOUNDATION BANQUET

U.S. Senator, Jeff Bingaman and the Eastern New Mexico Medical Center Auxiliary were the guests of honor at the ENMU-Roswell Foundation’s Eleventh Annual Foundation for the Future Banquet on May 1. The annual banquet is an opportunity to raise funds and awareness about the work of the Foundation. The Foundation Board of Directors also take the opportunity to publicly recognize and thank those who have helped to foster the growth of the University.

Dr. John Madden, ENMU-Roswell president, presented Bingaman with the President’s Distinguished Service Award. As one of the most senior Democrats in the United States Senate, Bingaman has been supportive of numerous ENMURoswell programs and services.

Betty Patton, Foundation president, presented the Diamond Service Award to members of the Eastern New Mexico Medical Center Auxiliary. Established in 1958, the ENMMC Auxiliary has a long history of scholarship awards to students pursuing careers in health care.

The event also recognized the Presidential Scholarship program and two student scholarships were awarded in memory of donors to the Foundation.

Aviation Maintenance Technology student, Jose Cordero, received the Joe Hudgens Scholarship. Nursing student, Marta Valadez, received the Martha Cress Scholarship.

Foundation Merit Awards were also presented to two outstanding ENMU-Roswell employees: Eva Watley, Supervisor of Intramurals and Facilities and Frances Dubiel, Facilities Coordinator. Patton also presented board member and former Foundation president, Bob Cates, with a special plaque thanking him for 27 years of loyal service.

CONGRATULATIONS TO FRANCES DUBIEL, FACILITIES COORDINATOR, IN MEMORIAM: LESLIE V. LANGSTON FOR MAY EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH Leslie V. Langston was born

ENMU-Roswell Presents Hank the Dawg Days On Saturday, May 5th, the ENMU-Roswell Special Services veterinary technician assistant class participated in the first annual Hank the Dawg Days held at Roswell Livestock and Farm Supply. The students gave complimentary flea and tick dips, nail trims, and spa treatments to over 200 dogs. The students who participated were Elizabeth Vital, Ross Doer, Cody Rogers, Alex Torres, Alex Matheson, Ryan Del Rio, and Greg Rista. The class is instructed by Stacy Dietrich, Registered Veterinary Technician. A variety of community organizations participated in the event: Roswell Library, Roswell Humane Society, Paws and Stripes, Charlie's Toys, and a pet photographer. ENMU-Roswell Special Services Department would like to thank the following sponsors, particularly Roswell Livestock and Farm Supply, for donating the electric clippers and flea/tick dips to our class; ENMU-Roswell Community Relations/College Development for the promotional items and T-shirts; and Dave Rogers, public relations for Hank the Dawg Days, for donating flea and tick dips and for being a part of the event.

March 25, 1927 in Palestine, Texas.

He graduated from high school in Denver City, Texas and joined the Navy in 1945. He served on five ships before he was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Nancy Eunice Lovett in 1947. Les worked for Humble Oil and Refining Company in Odessa, Texas and then in Hobbs, New Mexico until 1959. Les then went into business on his own, operating Humble Service Stations, a rental property business, and an auto supply store. In 1965, he began taking extension classes from ENMU and moved to Portales in 1965. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Education and started teaching for ENMU-Roswell in the spring of 1968. ENMU-Roswell had just moved to Walker Air Force Base. Les worked as a related subject instructor for the Vocational Technical Division. By 1971, Les had earned a master’s degree and he was promoted to Supervisor of all Vocational Technical Programs.

From 1975 to 1982, he was instructor and chairman of the Oilfield Training Center and wrote the curriculum. Under his leadership, the program grew from 2 students to about 475 students. He helped to raise funds for the new building construction and construction of the outdoor training lab. Les resigned from ENMU-Roswell in 1982 and went to Egypt to work in a training position for two years. He returned to ENMU-Roswell and worked as an adjunct faculty member in the Petroleum Technology and Drafting program until 2008, when he resigned due to poor health.

Langston received the Diamond Service Award from the ENMURoswell Foundation in 2010.

Student Success ENMU-ROSWELL NURSING PROGRAM RECOGNIZED BY STATE BOARD OF NURSING

The ENMU-Roswell Associate of Science degree in Nursing Program was recently recognized at the New Mexico Board of Nursing meeting in Albuquerque. Susan Golden, director of the nursing program, was praised for a 100-percent student pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination or NCLEX for the past six years.

Nursing students, Jesica Brooks, Jenny Thatcher, and Kate Richardson also met with the board to discuss their experiences in the nursing program. Brooks and Thatcher will graduate this May and Richardson will graduate at the end of the summer session in August. Brooks and Thatcher both plan to work in Roswell and pursue bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing. Richardson plans to return to her home in Scottsdale, Arizona. The students all agree the ENMURoswell Nursing Program is among the best in the state and feel very prepared for their careers in nursing. “The instructors here really give you their personal attention and really care about how you are doing not only in the program, but in whole your life. They really encourage you to keep going,” Thatcher said. Richardson said the program is a lot of hard work and stress, but feels it has been worthwhile. “I know I’ve grasped the concepts I need to know. If you want it bad enough, you will get through it. I have a career that can’t be outsourced,” she said. These students feel confident about their futures and are looking forward to many more smiles from satisfied patients and doctors.

PHI THETA KAPPA (PTK) INDUCTION CEREMONY A PTK induction ceremony was held on Friday, May 4 at ENMU-Roswell. A total of 19 students were inducted into PTK, a national honor society with prestigious requirements.

Students inducted into PTK must maintain a 3.5 GPA throughout their college career.

PHI THETA KAPPA HOSTS COMMIT TO COMPLETION DAY

On April 18, ENMU-Roswell's Alpha Mu Pi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa students hosted a Commit to Completion Day in the Performing Arts Center courtyard. The national honor society rates university chapters according to their level of achievement and participation in the community and on campus. The event aided PTK students to achieve a national 5 star goal.

News ENMU-ROSWELL TESTING SERVICES OFFERS PROFESSIONAL PROMETRIC TESTING The Testing Center at ENMU-Roswell offers a variety of licensure and certification examinations through the Professional Prometric Center. Exams available include: Automotive Service Excellence (ASE); New Mexico Insurance (NMINS); Graduate Record Exam (GRE); American Institute of Professional Book (AIPB); health care certification exams; and financial exams.

To schedule an exam, log on to www.prometric.com and register online. Hours of operation vary by date. Contact professional test administrators, Matthew Rincon and Juan Hernandez at (575)624-7402 at ENMU-Roswell for a testing schedule and other inquiries. The Professional Prometric Center is located on the ENMU-Roswell campus at 52 University Blvd. in the Instructional Center on the second floor, suite 208. The Testing Center staff can also accommodate unusual testing requests. Recently, 10 year old Isabel Villegas stopped in on her spring break vacation from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands to take the School and College Ability Test (SCAT) at ENMU-Roswell’s Testing Services Center with Professional Prometric. Isabel and her parents were visiting from St. Thomas where Isabel is a student at Antilles School.

She attended Gateway Christian Academy in Roswell before moving to St. Thomas. Isabel still has family in Roswell.

She is the daughter of Gabriel and Madel Villegas and the granddaughter of Bobby and Irene Villegas. She was contacted by John Hopkins University because of her high test scores in school to test for the SCAT. The SCAT results are used by John Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth as part of their admissions process. The SCAT is designed to measure the extent of a child's verbal and quantitative abilities.

SOLAR CARPORT COMMISSIONED AT ENMU-ROSWELL A new solar carport on the ENMU-Roswell campus was commissioned May 8 during a ceremony hosted by ENMURoswell, Xcel Energy, and Sacred Power Corporation. The carport is located between the Child Development Center and the Lawrence C. Harris Occupational Technology Center on Mathis St. on the south end of the campus. A number of city leaders and campus employees attended the event, including representatives from Senator Tom Udall and Senator Jeff Bingaman.

The carport was designed, engineered, manufactured, and installed by Sacred Power Corporation, a Native American owned company based in Albuquerque. According to Richard Fialho, project coordinator, no other school in New Mexico has this type of installation. The 50kW (50,000 watts) single axis tracking carport structure utilizes a system provided by Xcel Energy and a patented design by Sacred Power Corporation.

Fialho said the steel panels on the structure are made in New Mexico by Schott Solar and 90-percent of the materials are from and made in the state. Fialho said he is proud to work with ENMU-Roswell and Xcel Energy on the project. He said the solar energy industry is growing rapidly and he expects ENMU-Roswell to assist in training future leadership in the field.

In his remarks, Hill commended ENMU-Roswell for its foresight, saying Xcel Energy is excited to be a partner on the project. Hill said the company recognizes solar as a viable energy resource and the solar carport is an asset to the industry.

Tom Clancy’s latest thriller, Against All Enemies, is relatively short, for the esteemed suspense writer, at 756 pages. SUMMER SUN Triple digits are a very common occurrence during the summer months, and it is definitely starting to heat up. ENMU-ROSWELL HOLDS COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

Close to 300 graduates participated in Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell’s Fifty-Seventh Commencement Convocation on May 11 at the Roswell Wool Bowl. This spring marks the largest total graduating class at ENMU-Roswell, with approximately 450 candidates for graduation. Certificate of Employability graduates from the New Mexico Youth ChalleNGe Academy took part in the ceremony, in addition to bachelor’s and master’s degree candidates from Eastern New Mexico University and master’s degree candidates from New Mexico Highlands University’s School of Social Work. Dr. Steven Gamble, ENMU president, members of the ENMU Board of Regents, and members of the ENMU-Roswell Community College Board attended. Cadets with the Youth ChalleNGe Academy served as the Color Guard. The Tom Blake Trio sang the National Anthem. Music was provided by the ENMU-Roswell Community Band. The Roswell Fire Department ended the ceremony with a colorful fireworks display.

The featured speaker was Gina Vela, who graduated with an Associate of Science degree in nursing. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She moved to Roswell in 2005 and graduated from Roswell High School in 2009. Vela enrolled at ENMU-Roswell as a Presidential Scholar and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She is the second oldest of her siblings and is the first in her family to graduate from college. Following graduation, she plans to continue her education and obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She then plans to enroll in an anesthesiology training program to become a Certified Nurse Anesthetist. Vela is married and until recently, worked two part-time jobs. She was employed at Subway for three years and she worked as a student hire through the Presidential Scholarship in the Health Science Center. She has enjoyed her time at ENMU-Roswell, especially the interaction with her instructors.

GED STUDENTS CELEBRATE GRADUATION

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Department at ENMU-Roswell held its Twenty-Third Annual GED High School Completion Graduation ceremony on May 10 in the Performing Arts Center on campus. About 50 graduates participated. For adults who did not complete high school, the Tests of General Educational Development (GED) provide an opportunity to earn a high school credential. The GED testing program enables almost 500,000 adults every year to obtain high school equivalency certificates, which is about 15 percent of all high school diplomas issued in the United States. Nearly 23,000 students served annually through New Mexico ABE programs are making significant gains in quality of life. These GED graduates will now have greater access to employment and higher education.

The featured speaker was the Honorable Freddie J. Romero, District Court Judge, Fifth Judicial District. Judge Romero was appointed as District Court Judge in 2005 and elected in 2006. Prior to his appointment, he worked as an Assistant City Attorney in Albuquerque for approximately one year and then entered private practice for the next 23 years. He handles a criminal and civil caseload. Judge Romero participates in several community and statewide activities. He is a member of the New Mexico Juvenile Justice Advisory Commission and serves as Chair of the Chaves County Strategy Board. Judge Romero received his undergraduate degree from New Mexico State University and his law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law.

NATIONAL KIDS TO THE PARKS DAY SET FOR MAY 19

NEW MEXICO COMMISSION FOR COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERISM TO HOST ROSWELL MEETING

The New Mexico Commission for Community Volunteerism (NMCCV) and ENMU-Roswell are hosting a meeting to gather input about the role of volunteer programs in the Roswell area and how the Commission can help fund volunteer projects.

The meeting will be held Thursday, May 31 at 2 p.m. in room 200 of the Health Sciences Center on campus, 75 University Blvd.

At the meeting, residents will discuss how Roswell can benefit from volunteer programs engaging youth, seniors, and all ages. NMCCV coordinators say national service programs and volunteer support can help the community to meet growing needs for services such as disaster relief, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, in addition to veterans and military families.

ENMU-ROSWELL RECEIVES UPWARD BOUND FUNDING The Upward Bound Program at ENMU-Roswell has been selected to receive continued federal funding. The campus was notified by Senator Tom Udall of the new grant for $296,327 for the first budget period (09/01/2012 through 08/31/2013).

It is anticipated that the grant will be for a total of 5 years.

“We appreciate the value and importance of this work, and wish you continued success in increasing the academic success of these students,” said Fern Goodhart, Health/ Education LA, Office of Senator Tom Udall.

The grant will allow disadvantaged youth to access educational services at ENMU-Roswell. “We are extremely pleased to receive funding for continued operation of our Upward Bound Program,” said Greg Martinez, TRIO director.

“I give special credit to Natalie Martinez, Upward Bound director, and Ramona Miranda, Upward Bound Program Specialist, for all of their hard work and dedication.

Upward Bound is a college-based program that provides academic instruction for low-income, disadvantaged high school students who are the first in their families to consider going to college. During the summer, Upward Bound students are involved in an extensive academic program with an emphasis on English, math, and science. Upward Bound has been proven to significantly increase a student's likelihood of finishing college.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF CHAVES COUNTY HONORING FRANK SANCHEZ The Community Foundation of Chaves County will hold their 3rd Annual Community Foundation HONORS event on Thursday, June 21 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art. The event will honor Frank Sanchez due to his lifelong contributions and passion to help the residents of Chaves County and beyond.
