CLOSE ONLY COUNTS IN HORSESHOES AND HAND GRENADES With six minutes to go Sunday night I was about ready to cut my losses and head back to my car. The New England Patriots were ahead of the Atlanta Falcons 30-13 and things weren’t looking good – not even close at the Georgia Dome. It’s a long drive home and the house was packed initially. I’ve just about seen enough. The team that I expected to be a nobrainer for the Super Bowl was about to drop their second game in a row and third out of their first four.

Apparently everyone else had the same idea as well. After Steven Gostkowski’s 49-yard field goal the Dome looked like a vacant parking lot. Five plays earlier Matt Ryan was picked off by Aqib Talib who quite frankly had one of his best games as a pro – definitely since leaving Tampa Bay. Another loss was eminent. Not again. This would make three in the first month – something a Mike Smith coached team ha never done. But alas, I’m a slacker. The last six minutes were some of the most exciting football I had seen in a long time.

Patriots then pass completions to Jones and Gonzalez again gave the Falcons the ball on the New England 7-yard line. The offense stalled again as it had all day in the red zone scoring only twice out of six chances from inside the New England 20. Matt Bryant kicked a 25-yard field goal with 2:55 to go and trailing by only a single score. Atlanta tried for the onside kick again. Everyone groaned (those of us remaining). New England recovered. On the Patriots’ next play Stephen Ridley rushed for eight yards and a second down and two. Falcons fans put their heads down and started to leave. The Atlanta defense stiffened up. The next play only gained one yard. It was third down and one. LaGarrette Blount who burned the Falcons earlier with a long touchdown run took the handoff. Boom! He was stopped for no gain. Fourth down. What would Tom Brady and the Patriots do? They went for it with just under two minutes to go. Brady tried a quarterback sneak. Fumble! Brady recovered his fumble but no gain. ever reason in the second half we’re not. And it’s all of us, collectively. It’s no one person that we’re going to point the finger at. I’ll tell you what; it’s got to get figured out. Like I said before, we’ve been here before as far as knowing we can move the ball on offense. The season’s long, and it’s only four games into it. We’re going to get it done. We’re going to turn this thing around,” said Gonzalez. Once again the defense put no pressure on Brady. Brady passed for less than 100 yards in the first half but cut loose in the second finishing 20-of-31 for 316 yards and two touchdown passes. Brady had all the time in the world and his inexperienced receivers had time to run around to get open. “I felt like our guys fought as a football team tonight, but in the have a “Miracle on Peachtree”? Matt Ryan threw down the left sideline. Julio Jones leaps and comes down with it for a 49-yard gain and a first down on the Patriots 13. Those of us remaining were going crazy. Two incomplete passes and then Ryan throws a short pass over the middle to Jacquizz Rodgers. He jukes, he spins but only gains three yards. Fourth and seven with 42 seconds to go. Ryan comes under center, takes the snap and scans the end zone. He throws to the right for Roddy White. Talib bats the ball away at the last moment. Patriots’ ball with 36 seconds to go. Two kneels later and that was it. The Patriots held on for a 30-23 win to remain undefeated and dropping the Falcons to 1-3. No “Miracle on Peachtree” for me to write about.

own hands. Of the three losses all came down to failures not only in the red zone but also final possessions. Week one Stephen Jackson dropped the winning touchdown pass against the Saints with under a minute to play. Two plays after that the ball was swatted out of Tony Gonzalez’s hands in the end zone. Loss one. Last week the Falcons lead to ten points twice before giving up the winning score with 56 seconds to play. And this week after spotting the Patriots a 17 point lead they fall ten yards short with 36 seconds to play.

Coming into the game the Falcons red zone efficiency was barely 50 percent. After Sunday night’s loss where they were 2-of-6 they are now 39 percent. This puts a damper on Ryan’s 421 passing yards and is a damper on Gonzalez’s career night of 12 Close counts only in horseshoes receptions for 149 yards and two and hand grenades. We, as a coaching staff, and as a team, have to learn from those mistakes we have made in the first four games and move on and get them corrected. MONEY MANAGEMENT

HOW MUCH TO SAVE FOR A RETIREMENT WITH DIGNITY The rule of thumb for retirement planners when asked how to save for retirement is to suggest that people put aside 20%30% of their working income for retirement needs. I don't know many people, these days, who can afford that on current salaries when you factor in cost of living and other expenses. If you have a very high income then you can of course afford to put aside more and to actively invest. So, it may be that when you ask yourself how much to save for retirement that you have to put aside 20-30%, even factoring in supplemental retirement income like social security (government pension plans outside of the US), private or public sector pension plans, other annuity or investment income. You have to also factor in the lilihood that future tax rates may be higher than they are today, so one consideration now is are you using a tax deferred or an up front retirement investment vehicle?

I also would caution readers who are coming to grips with this situation to also diversify their investments between the risky high yield kind to the more conservatiove kind, as well as working precious metals like silver and maybe gold into their portfolio. Precious metals hold and store value for the long haul. Just make sure that you take delivery of the metal and store it securely without fanfare so no one knows you have it. Another thing that you can do to make sure that you have enough to retire on is increase your income. I know it's pretty impossible to do that with just a regular job, unless you have a high ceiling and know you're going places with it. If that's not the case for you, then strongly consider several possibilities:

you have a skill that is marketable - again you are trading time for money. * Buy and sell things online lots of labor and also overhead like inventory storage, postage, etc. * Get into network marketing of some sort - this has a high potential payoff that can solve your problem completely. The issue is which ones to choose and also you have to stick with it and be consistent and persistent and not give up easily. We are blessed though that there are so many of these out there to choose from. There are traditional and online versions. The internet based ones offer the benefit of working from home and not having to approach family or friends for support.

So there you have it. That is this author's take. I believe it's sound advice and well worth consideration. Only YOU can take control of your future needs and make sure that they are met. Do not depend on others or the government because neither will cover your needs, There may be more, but I unless you're a member of believe those cover most of the Congress, or a member of the political governing class, but basics. that's another article altogethSo what have we learned today? er.

* Get a second "moonlighting" job - these are low paying with unfriendly hours.Trading time * When pondering how much for money. * Do part time consulting if to save for retirement, you have

to save a substantial portion of your current income OR make enough extra to offset or exceed this, which gives you more for saving and investing. * You should diversify what investments that you have in order to minimize risk. * You should consider the possibility of opening up extra income streams so that how much to save for retirement becomes an academic question because you are covered.

Football Gumbo It’s been a long time since I cooked up a batch of gumbo. But the arrival of fall has inspired another batch of assorted athletic ingredients… …Tennessee hosts Georgia this Saturday and the Vols are responding to the invading Dogs by debuting their new “smokey grey” uniforms. First-year coach Butch Jones unveiled the rather untraditional game gear in the pre-season – with mixed reviews from UT fans. Jones has a tough row to hoe this year. Georgia comes in after a big 4441 home win over ranked LSU. Tennessee slipped by South Alabama, 31-24, at Neyland Stadium last Saturday. Bulldog quarterback Aaron Murray was basically untouched by the Tigers’ defense. Vols’ QB Justin Worley was hurried often against the Jaguars and gave up two interceptions. It’s going to take a lot more than grey uni-

forms to get Tennessee inspired enough to compete with Georgia. Jones inherited a program that slid backwards under Derek Dooley. On paper, he’s done a great job recruiting so far. But he’s stuck coaching the players that Dooley and Lane Kiffin recruited and the Vols are underequipped to compete in the SEC right now. After this Saturday, Tennessee gets a week off to prepare for a South Carolina team that beat the Bulldogs earlier this season. Ouch… …Speaking of Lane Kiffin… Vols fans took a huge amount of satisfaction from the short-term Tennessee coach’s firing at Southern Cal. After one 7-6 season (and a Chick-Fil-A bowl trip) at the Vols’ helm, Kiffin left hurriedly for his “dream job” at USC… leaving a trail of recruiting scandals and ill will behind him. He inherited a Trojans

team reeling from Pete Carroll’s term… with Carroll’s own scandals leaving USC shorthanded on scholarships and hobbled on the recruiting trail. Losing to Arizona State, 62-41 last Saturday, was the straw that broke Kiffin’s back at Southern Cal. Trojan athletic director Pat Haden met with Kiffin on the airport tarmac when the team plane got back to Los Angeles and dropped the hammer. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy… …If the Kiffin era marks some of the darkest days for Tennessee football fans, the Peyton Manning era was the polar opposite. Even though Tee Martin quarterbacked the Vols to their 1998 national championship, Manning is held in higher regard by the Big Orange Nation. Martin went on to a soso career in the Canadian

Football League. They are already making space for the Manning exhibit at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The elder NFL Manning brother, is perhaps playing better at 37 than he did in his “prime years.” Against Philadelphia this Sunday, his offense didn’t face a third down in its final four touchdown drives. They stacked up like this: 11 plays, 80 yards; 10 plays, 80 yards; eight plays, 80 yards; seven plays, 65 yards… …Saturdays are likely to be a bit rough for Tennessee fans… for a while, at least. For now, they can take solace in the fact that their least favorite coach is unemployed and their favorite son is tearing up the NFL. And they probably won’t have to deal with the whole grey uniform thing for too long, either…

BERLIN - “Forest Boy,” who duped German officials into believing he lived in the wilderness for years, was sentenced to community service Thursday for fraud. Robin van Helsum, in his early 20s, gained fame in 2011 when he entered Berlin’s City Hall and claimed to be “Ray,” a dweller in a nearby forest. He said he did not know his last name, and had lived in the wilderness since his father’s

death in a fall, NBC News reported. His story was uncovered as a hoax after his photograph appeared in European media. A woman in the Netherlands contacted police in 2012 to report “Forest Boy” was her stepson, who disappeared the previous year. A legal settlement was arranged Thursday during his trial for fraud, in which prosecutors demanded van Helsum return approximately 30,000 euros ($40,445) he received from German youth organizations.

Court spokesman Tobias Kaehne said van Helsum could have received a similar amount in government benefits as a homeless adult, and thus would not be ordered to make financial restitution. “The loss to the taxpayer is either nothing or very small,” Kaehne said. Officials in the Derry School District in Dauphin County, Pa., gave the boy — identified in the federal lawsuit as G.B. — a four-day suspension and branded him a “weapons offender” for possessing the pen, which emits a small electrical shock when the cap is pressed, the Philadelphia Daily News reported Thursday. G.B. is a second-grader at Hershey Elementary School in Hershey,

Pa., the newspaper added. “A sharpened pencil is probably a more dangerous item than this pen was,” said the boy’s attorney Aaron Martin, who noted the goal of the suit is to clear the boy’s name and to clarify what can be brought to school. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Harrisburg, Pa., claims the boy is classified as a violator of the school’s weapons policy, his disciplinary record is permanently “marred,” and he is “relegated to the same category as violent criminals” and terrorists. MALAD, Idaho - An Idaho high school principal said selling trophies earned by school athletes was meant to connect with the community, not sell out the school’s heritage. Some Malad residents accused Malad High School Principal John Cockett of selling out the school’s heritage when he had trophies earned by school athletes during the past 60 years sold at a recent homecoming game, the Idaho State Journal reported Monday. However, Cockett said the intention was to build ties between the school and the community. “We wanted to get them out to the people connected to the trophies — team members and coaches — rather than [keeping them] in boxes,” he said. Cockett said the $5 price tag was

designed to deter people without connections to the school from taking multiple trophies. He said the school did not have enough space for all of the trophies accumulated over the years. The principal said no more trophies will be sold without the school board’s approval. “Some people thought this was a great idea, but others thought it was a sacrilege. That’s unfortunate because it wasn’t our intent,” he said. “It was a good idea gone bad.” SINKING SPRING, Pa. - A Pennsylvania Halloween park is challenging visitors to pass through a haunted house in the nude for the “Naked and Scared” challenge. The Shocktoberfest attraction in Sinking Spring said guests can pay $20 after midnight, once the park’s regular hours have ended, to pass through the haunted house for a challenge inspired by the Discovery Channel’s “Naked and Afraid” reality show, WKYC-TV, Cleveland, reported Monday. The park said participants can go either “nude” or “prude,” an option to leave one’s underwear on during the challenge. Officials said only guests over the age of 18 will be allowed to participate and they will undress in a “semiprivate preshow building” to keep them out of view of minors and non-participating cus-

The park’s website said the attraction is not meant to be sexual and “no sexual misconduct, inappropriate or disrespectful behavior will be tolerated.” CHICAGO - In a video posted on YouTube a man and woman are heard talking as they film a minivan driving next to them on I290 in Chicago, while two people appear to be having sex in the driver’s seat. The video shows a woman sitting in a man’s lap, facing him, and bouncing up and down. The man and woman filming the video can be heard squabbling over whether to keep taping the couple in the minivan. “I think I’m going to stop it now,” the man says. “No no no,” the woman says. “I want to get her bouncing again. She’s just leaning on him now, and I want her bouncing.” The video lasts a little over a minute, and at one point, the couple in the car seems to notice they’re being taped, as the man waves from the driver’s window. LONDON - A thief was caught not so much red-handed as greenfaced in London after breaking into a car in that sprayed him with a liquid that glows emerald under ultraviolet light. Yafet Askale, 28, denied entering the vehicle that police set up with a dye-trap in Harlesden, northwest London, to catch thieves in June. But he was found guilty of stealing objects inside the car after police produced photos showing his face covered with the liquid, invisible under normal light. The network and the show’s executive producer, Lorne Michaels, both denied any knowledge of O’Connor’s plan and said she had performed the song differently in rehearsal. Those of you that have read this column for a while know how I feel about the Manic Street Preachers. I have championed them when the rest of the music press, especially on this side of the Atlantic, has moved on to the Next Big Thing. Why? Because, as they head into their third decade of making great and challenging music, the Manics continue to steady kick ass, defying all those predictable, lazy obituaries consigning them to the scrap heap … again. Music writers ain’t that bright sometimes, you know? After 2010’s wonderful “Postcards from a Young Man”, termed “one last shot at mass communication” by the band and what was, in reality, a beautiful and honest rock album, the Manic Street Preachers return with something we have not heard before – nuance, subtlety, the power of less. With nary an electric guitar to be found and three guest vocalists, the Manics refuse to play it safe and we are all richer for it. The opening track, “This Sullen Welsh Heart”, features Lucy Rose in a duet with James Dean Bradfield on a ballad whose melancholy pace and sound fail to hide the razor wire in the

lyrics. “This sullen Welsh heart/It won’t leave/It won’t give up/The hating half of me has won easily”. Damn … The obvious, big-sounding single is up next. “Show Me the Wonder” is full of Bradfield’s vocals and a top-notch brass section that wraps around each other on the chorus and just blast out of the speakers/headphone/whatever. “Rewind the Film” follows, featuring Richard Hawley (who y’all have heard of before – right here) taking the vocals solo for the first three minutes in a beautiful tune full of nostalgia, but not a gentle one as Bradfield calls out that “There is too much heartbreak in the nothing of now”, strangling sentimentality before it draws a breath. Next up is “Builder of Rage”, a brief, brutal, and yet pretty tune that features what might be the essence of the 2013 Manics in one line: “How I hate middle age/In between acceptance and rage”. Next up is “Four Lonely Roads”, with Cate Le Bon doing a wonderful job of reminding me why I miss Kirsty MacColl so much. “I Miss the Tokyo Skyline”

rules, with sequenced guitars and some wonderful violin work. It sounds so different from anything in recent memory by the band that it almost feels like discovering them again. “Anthem for a Lost Cause” recalls “A Design for Life” at its 15-year reunion, wondering how it all ended up like this. “As Holy as the Soil (That Buries Your Skin”, “3 Ways to See Despair”, “Running Out of Fantasy” follow, one after the other and they are all brilliant. “My ecosystem is based on hatred”, indeed. “Manorbier” is a spooky cool instrumental that fits perfectly, flowing nigh-seamlessly into the final track, “30-Year War”. The Manics wish to speak ill of the dead Thatcher, just as they did when that witch was still with us, and they still do it well, finishing the album with what would be a brisk and muscular call to arms if they thought that would do the trick anymore. Instead, it leaves us with a question: “I ask you again/What is to be done?” Man, everything else is bumped down a notch on the Year’s Best However Many List because – right here on September 30, 2013 – “Rewind the Film” is the album of the year. Everyone else is playing for second place. GET THIS NOW. Get it before you go to bed, eat a sandwich, or bust a grumpy. It is fantastic. Y’all be good. Later taters.
