BIG PARADE

The Lumineers, a folk-rock trio out of Denver, Colorado, deliver an acoustic-based Americana sound that touches a lot of stylistic bases, from folk to gospel to heartland rock and the narrative end of country, all with interesting rhythmic twists and turns. The Lumineers perform Saturday thorugh Monday at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

TRIBAL DERIVATIONS Beats Antique came together to make music for Miles Copeland's Bellydance Superstars extravaganzas. The trio is composed of David Satori (guitar, saz, viola, and percussion), Sidecar Tommy Cappel (keys, toy piano, drums, and percussion), and Zoë Jakes (belly dancer, composer, and arranger). Their music incorporates Middle Eastern grooves, Balkan wedding music, flamenco, French Gypsy jazz, hip-hop, dub reggae, and other Eastern tonalities, all pulled together with electronica that won't put off club kids, but will appeal to world music lovers as well. All of the bandmembers have a long history of innovative music-making behind them. Beats Antique will be at Track 29 in Chattanooga on Wednesday, October 16.

MONDAY NIGHT MAYHEM As Matt Bryant’s kick split the uprights giving the Atlanta Falcons their first lead of the game over the New York Jets the clock read 1:54. And that is exactly how long the lead lasted.

As time expired Nick Folk connected from 43 yards for the third time to propel the Jets past the dumbfounded Falcons on primetime Monday night at the Georgia Dome. The display read – New York 30 Atlanta 28. And so the nightmare that 2013 has become continues in Atlanta. Monday night was one of the biggest displays of amateur – not professional football ever witnessed. Rookie Jet QB Geno Smith ran around, arms waving in the air threw short passes, darted left and right against the Atlanta defense. The Atlanta defense actually didn’t make Geno Smith look good, but actually it was Smith who brought down the quality of play. Monday night debacle looked like amateur hour at times. Sloppy short passes by Smith, missed tackles left and right by the Falcon defense, a

And to top it all off, Atlanta’s Pro Bowl squad looks more like a MASH unit than a football team. Add to the list Jason Snelling with concussion-like complications and Julio Jones with an undetermined foot injury that may bring his 2013 season to an end. The only people not playing hurt for the Falcons now is Matt Ryan, Tony Gonzalez and the coaching staff. Oh yeah, also whoever is

himself up if anyone else gets hurt. Smith and the Falcons have been lucky up to this point in his reign in Atlanta. Injuries have been at a minimum until this season. With a makeshift offensive line it is only a matter of time before Matt Ryan joins that list.

Monday night’s game got off to an inauspicious start. For the fifth week in a row the Falcons received the opening kickoff. This time however, they did not score. They were forced to punt. Matt Bosher’s punt was blocked, keeping a streak alive for the punter. He has had a punt blocked every year since joining the Falcons – making it three years in a row. Mixing runs and pass the Jets regained the lead on a 20-yard strike from Smith to Jeff Cumberland. Atlanta had a rare three-andout and the Jets took only three plays to extend their lead to 10. Smith first hit Cumberland again – this time for 47 yards to give the Jets the ball at the Falcon 16. On the next play Smith hit Jeremy Kerley for the score and a shocked Atlanta crowd. And for the first time since Bobby Petrino was coach boos filled the Georgia Dome.

Using two tight ends – both Gonzalez and rookie Levine Toilolo, Ryan hit both and drove deep into New York territory. Rodgers then went around left end outrunning the containment to pull Atlanta within three at 17-14.

Back came the Falcons offense. Ryan hit Jones with a highlight worthy pitch and run for 46 yards and a first down on the Jets 27.

The Falcons got down inside With 12 minutes left the the Jet ten-yard-line and it Falcons had their work cut out came down to a fourth-andthree. A pass interference call gave the Falcons new life. On second and goal Ryan found Toilolo for the go ahead score which brings us to where this diatribe began. The defense has been catching grief for the loss Monday night but they are not totally at fault. Smith did have a lot of time. They also sacked him four times. Special teams play was careless. A blocked punt and two open field tackles by the punter to save touchdown makes him the MVP on defense.

Atlanta then drove the length of the field. The half ended with the drive stopped and Jacquizz Rodgers stuffed before he could cross the goal line instead of kicking a field goal. The boos were deafening now. The third quarter fortunes seemed to change. The Falcons had not score in the third quarter all season coming into Monday night’s game. Atlanta held New York to a three-andout. Harry Douglas made a nice punt return giving the Falcons the ball at midfield.

unsportsmanlike conduct because of his tackle. The Jets took over on the Atlanta 23. A few plays later Smith threw his third touchdown pass to give the Jets a 27-14 lead.

Credit goes to the muchmaligned Falcon defense as they held their ground limited the damage to a field goal as the third quarter was winding down. Atlanta failed to move the ball again – another three-and-out. Bosher punted again and once again it was up to him to make an open field tackle to save a touchdown. To add insult to injury Bosher was flagged for ENIGMA

Shades of Grey We’ve all heard it a million times: “Football is a game of inches.” Tennessee fans got a painful reminder of that cliché last Saturday in Knoxville. After battling back from a 17-3 halftime deficit, the Vols suffered a soulcrushing 34-31 overtime loss to (then-)sixth-ranked Georgia. And it all came down to a matter of inches. When Tennessee’s “Pig” Howard dove for the goal line after taking an endaround handoff from quarterback Justin Worley, it looked like the Vols had scored on their first OT possession. When the replay showed Howard had lost the ball and fumbled it mere inches from the end zone, the resulting touchback gave the Bulldogs the ball… and

the ball game. Georgia kicker Marshall Morgan kicked the 42-yard field goal that provided the final points margin… …I didn’t really expect Tennessee to give Georgia much of a game last Saturday. UGA quarterback Aaron Murray was en route to becoming the Southeastern Conference’s all-time passing leader. Worley was having an up-and-down season at best. And the Vols were set to debut their “smokey grey” alternate uniforms in an effort to end their get their first win over a top 25 team since 2009. Tennessee traditionalists were unenthused…

the end of Saturday’s game. Tennessee fell short (by the aforementioned inches), but coach Butch Jones and his staff had to be pleased by their team’s fortitude. And Jones showed a lot of guts in his play calling. The Vols had three fourth-down conversions in the fourth quarter on Saturday… and two of those were truly ballsy plays. Raijon Neal took a pitch for a 43-yard gain and Worley tossed a clutch play-action pass to tight end A.J. Branisel for 28. There were, as usual, times when the Tennessee offense looked entirely too predictable. But in those critical fourth quarter situations, Jones showed a willingness to roll the dice…

…A lot of Vols fans warmed up to the grey uniforms by …Things have been rough at

Tennessee for so long that no one should expect a quick fix. The Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley years left the Big Orange faithful dazed and depressed. On paper, Jones has already lined up the kind of high-caliber recruits it will take for the Vols to escape the middle of the SEC pack. For now, though, Tennessee has a week off. Jones and his inherited players will catch their breath and try to prepare for back-to-back games against South Carolina and Alabama. The first-year coach will have to take some chances in both of those games, for sure. But I doubt he’ll roll the dice on those grey uniforms again for a while…

Dear Rocco, I am a female and I sleep around. I will be honest with you? I enjoy sex. I have sleep with quite a number of guys and while I’ve had tons of fun I have never cheated on or with someone, practiced unsafe sexual practices. I regularly get tested and use any and al precautions to make sure I don’t catch anything or get pregnant. How dome many think I’m a whore when men that act like I do are just “being boys”? SR

Dear Rocco, I am almost to the point where I’m sick and tired of all the PSA, documentaries and so on and so forth over bullying. Where did our country go wrong? Have we raised a generation of pussies that can’t defend themselves. What happened to standing up for yourself instead of crying and running to the teacher? No wonder this country has gone to hell! DALLAS - A researcher in Dallas released video and data this week she says proves Bigfoot exists — and is a hybrid descended from humans and a closely related species. Melba Ketchum, a geneticist, is the leader of the Sasquatch Genome Project, KTVT-TV in Dallas reported. “We want people to understand this is a serious study,” she said at

Tuesday’s news conference. The research is being funded by Adrian Erickson, a businessman who says he has seen the creatures a number of times. Erickson has presented videos in the past. “People have chosen not to believe it,” he said. “They can’t find it in their minds to think these things exist.” Bigfoot sightings are most common in the Pacific Northwest, although there have been reports as far afield as Pennsylvania. The creature is

She said her work has been submitted to a peerreviewed journal. “This creature does not follow general rule,” Ketchum said. “What it does do is very different. We think it is human-hybrid. That is our theory.” A leaked review of the article suggested the

NEW YORK - Excitement for Twitter’s coming IPO is running pretty high - so much so that some investors on Friday mistook the nearly worthless stock of long-dead electronics retailer Tweeter for the “tweeting” site, sending shares up more than 1,000 percent. The stock, which trades over the counter, closed Thursday at a price of less than a penny a share, and Friday hit a high of 15 cents a share on Friday, before paring gains to trade at 5 cents, a 669 percent rise. More than 11.7 million shares had traded by midday. The volume was the most active trading day for the company since May 10, 2007, when 13.05 million shares were traded and the company reported quarterly results and said it may choose to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The Shangri-Las’ “Leader Of The Pack” is released. Of their six US Top 40 hits, this will be their only number one. It reached #11 in the UK. 11996655 “Yesterday” topped both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cashbox Magazine Best Sellers chart. The song was actually recorded by Paul McCartney alone, who had earlier tried in vain to fit the other Beatles in, but would later admit he just couldn’t make the song work in any other form.

11 9955 22 Bob Horn’s Bandstand debuts on WFIL-TV in Philadelphia. Less than four years later, the weekly show will be hosted by Dick Clark and will go on to be one of the most influential US music programs in Rock history.

The Chrysler Corporation introduces high fidelity record players for their 1956 line-up of cars. The unit measured about four inches high and less than a foot wide and mounted under the instrument panel. The seven inch discs spun at 16 2/3 rpm and required almost three times the number of grooves per inch as an LP. A set of 35 classical recordings were available that provided between 45 and 60 minutes of uninterrupted music. The players would be discontinued in 1961. 1199 5566 Elvis Presley’s “Love Me Tender” entered the Billboard chart for a nineteen week stay. It was #1 for five of those weeks. The song, from Presley’s first film of the same name, was adapted from the tune “Aura Lee”, written in 1861. 11 9955 77 Jerry Lee Lewis records his biggest hit, “Great Balls of Fire” as a follow-up to his six million seller, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”. Johnny Mathis had the best selling song in America with “Chances Are”, which would sell over two million copies. On tour in Sydney, Australia, Little Richard denounces Rock ‘n’ Roll, saying “If you want to live for the Lord, you can’t take Rock and Roll too. God doesn’t like it.” When his sax player, Clifford Burks, dares Richard to prove his “faith in God,” Little Richard tosses four diamond rings, valued at $8,000, into Sydney’s Hunter River and soon after launches a Gospel career. Gene Vincent, most often remembered for his 1956 hit “Be Bop A Lula”, died of a bleeding ulcer at the age of 36. 119977 33 Cher had the top tune in the US with a song written especially for her, “Half-Breed”. In the UK however, the single did not chart. Elton John is awarded a Gold record for his two disc set, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, his third straight number one album. 119977 44 After a long dry spell, Dionne Warwicke returned to the US top ten with “Then Came You”, recorded with The Spinners. Due to some superstitious feelings having to do with astrology, the former Ms. Warwick added an “e” to the end of her name for good luck. She would later return to the old spelling, which is actually a mis-spelled version of her real name: Warrick. 119977 55

The Federal Government Ran Out of Money Because It Wastes So Much - Let's Be Honest People Have you ever wondered why the Federal Government keeps running through its spending and borrowing limits? It's simple really, political leaders of our government has made so many fiscally irresponsible promises to corporations and the masses which put us in economic harm's way. They will not stop spending our money, and they keep wanting more - more money, taxpayer's money to spend to bribe voters and campaign contributors. This is unacceptable in my opinion, but who am I to say? Well, I am like you, a taxpayer, so let's talk. The Washington Post had an interesting article on September 26, 2013 titled; "Full speed ahead with yearend spending," and that is just a complete slap in the face to taxpayers, but this is how the government operates and has for decades. It is dishonorable in my opinion and one of the reasons why the system is broken. The Los Angeles
