Summary: This article informs about the political crisis that Egypt is going through, at this time. It talks about the destitution of the president, the protests being held at Egypt, and the changes that a new government should make. The news article also explains the use of violence against civilians and that the United States stopped supporting Egypt´s military, because of the violence.

Vocabulary: Demonstrations – a public manifestation of a group´s believes or feelings, by a march, or a protest. Muslim Brotherhood – a political group that believes that the rules of their religion (Sunni Islam) should be a big influence on country laws.

Questions 1) What caused this event, and/or what are the effects of this event?

4

The overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi is the mainly cause of this event. It may have been for not fulfilling his campaign offers, or because he was part of the Muslim Brotherhood, but the military destitute him from his job. This made Morsi´s supporters want him back on power and initiated these protests. These riots or protests may have negative effects on Egypt. First, the military is using violence to stop these events, which hurts civilians. Second, if the government is focused on these protests, the economy of the country is going to be lower. Right now, halve of the country is in a status of poverty, and this can increase with these events. Finally, these riots can cause a civil war, but this can be considered as a worst-case scenario. 2) Can you connect this event to something similar that has happened around you? (Has something like this happened to you, your family, your community, or your country?) Explain.

In my country has happened something similar in one way. The last presidents have been overthrown by the country. Nothing has ever happened in a high level of violence, and for many time. This is the very big difference between these events. During the last president´s term, nothing like this has happened.

Article # 2: “Could Undersea Hot Springs Hold The Key To Understanding The Origins Of Life?”

Summary: This article talks about a discovery that could help understand the origins of life. A group of scientists found an underwater volcanic mountain range rich in sulfur. They found out that when the superheated water containing sulfur minerals, gets in contact with the cold seawater, these minerals crystallize and settle on the sea floor, near the volcano. These sulfur-rich minerals provide enough energy to sustain a whole community of microorganisms. This article also speaks about how this discovery could help to find the origin of life, or if there is life in other planets.

Vocabulary: Plausible – something that appears to be truth, or can be credible Frigid – that its temperature is very cold.

Questions: 1) What new insight into the world did you gain through this article, and how will it impact your way of thinking or behaving? Explain.

Through this article, I learned that there are still many things scientists don’t know about the origins of life. I also learned that small discoveries like this can have big results in science. This will impact on my thinking, because this makes me realize how small things can have great value.

2) What was the most interesting thing that you learned from reading this article, and why? Explain

6

The most interesting thing from this article was that this discovery can be used to know if there is life in other planets. On Jupiter´s moons, because it has similar conditions to the underwater volcanoes, scientists can now find out if there is life. This discovery is interesting because many scientists wonder if there is life in other planetary bodies, and now they can know.

Questions: 1) If applicable: What caused this event, and/or what are the effects of this event? Explain. This event seems to be caused by a disease. In this early stage of event, scientists cannot know what happened to these dolphins, but some think it may be the “morbillivirus”. This is measles-like disease that affected dolphins massively, in the decade of the 80´s. Scientists have found that at least one dolphin has this disease. Researcher could take months to find out if it is an epidemic, or not. The major effect of these events is the environmental instability. . This event can lead into other major species death that can destabilize our environment and even kill our society. The world can take this problem as an alert to protect the Earth. This is a call to contribute onto the planet´s health.

2) What was the most interesting thing that you learned from reading this article, and why? Explain.

The most interesting thing I learned from this article was that the morbillivirus is not a new disease. An epidemic of this disease happened before to dolphins, in the 1980´s. It is interesting because it means that researchers have not find how to prevent this disease in dolphins. It means that we have to take care of our planet, to prevent these big epidemics in the future.

Article # 4: “A New Species Discovered—or Not?”

Summary: This article informs the reader about a new species of mammal. It was the first carnivore specie found in decades, in the Americas. It has been found in the high foggy cloud forests in Ecuador and Colombia. Scientists thought it was an Olingo, but this specimen called Olinguito is smaller and with skulls differently shaped. This article also talks about its state of conservancy and history.

Vocabulary: Pelt – furry skin of an animal. Falsely – wrong, or untrue. False.

Questions: 1) What was the most interesting thing that you learned from reading this article, and why? Explain. The most interesting thing I learned from this article was that there are many undiscovered species in the world. The Olinguito has been in zoos and museums, but it was mistaken by an Olingo. I think that in the world there can be many animals mistaken by others that we have to investigate to uncover the truth. 2) What new insight into the world did you gain through this article, and how will it impact your way of thinking or behaving? Explain. This learning will impact my way of thinking because many things aren’t what they seem to be. The Olinguito seemed to be an Olingo, but it wasn’t. This means that I will need to think deeply in daily life.

Right now, the English parliament wants to reject the attack to Syria.
