Engineers - Protecting Our Coasts And Ports In our busy lives we all interact with our coasts and ports in some way or another, be it at work, home with our families, in transport or recreation. As we predominately live and work close to the coast in NSW the need becomes even more pressing to protect our natural coastal environment and infrastructure, combined with the need to develop new infrastructure to satisfy our economic growth. The dynamic interaction of natural variable weather systems on both the sea and land significantly influences the way we interact with our coasts and ports and as such proves to be a very challenging environment for coastal and maritime engineers. The adverse effects of this are often visible on our coastline after major storm events such as “East Coast Low” depression weather systems, one of which resulted in the grounding of the Pasha Bulka vessel in Newcastle as well as beach erosion and adverse effects on building, transport and services infrastructure located alongside the NSW coast. Failure to fully investigate and understand the effects of how nature interacts with the various works, structures and infrastructure that are designed for coasts and ports is fraught with danger and adverse consequences for the community. Engineers need to constantly articulate these potential adverse risks to the others in our community who are responsible for effective management of our coastal and maritime resources. The NSW Maritime Panel has one of its main objectives to share knowledge relating to how we manage and develop our coasts and ports. In addition to our monthly presentations, each year in August in conjunction with PIANC Australia we organise a half day seminar which is always well attended. This year the theme is: “Vulnerability of Coasts and Ports to Natural Extreme Events”, further details of which are provided in this bulletin. This will be of particular interest to all those who interact with our coasts and ports, including practitioners and managers. On behalf of the NSW Maritime Panel I look forward to seeing many of you at this event. Alan Betts Chair – NSW Maritime Panel
