Knightsbridge Residence by Jonathan Tuckey Design Shopkeeper Maureen Doherty’s London apartment was designed to be versatile. A bathing room with a Japanese soaking tub is sometimes used for meetings, her front door holds a merchandise display case, and closing a row of builtin cabinets in the center of the main room transforms it from an open kitchen to a serenely neutral space. “The flat might be used for photo shoots or to warehouse her clothing stock. Her brief was to have no names for rooms,” says Jonathan Tuckey, principal of London firm Jonathan Tuckey Design (JTD), which executed the idea. “Her boundaries between work and home are really blurred.” The 1,100-square-foot apartment occupies spaces above and adjacent to Doherty’s boutique, Egg, in a house that was once a 19th-century dairy stable. Two years ago, Doherty commissioned JTD to renovate the building next door and convert its attic into a pied-à-terre. The new apartment would be a place where she could recharge her creativity and occasionally let the back-of-house functions for her business spill over. Doherty and the design team agreed it was important to retain remnants of the building’s past life—exposed brick walls, a gabled roof, and a large triangular truss, which maintains its barnlike appearance. “We always strip everything back to how it was made. That helps us to uncover problems, but it’s also about aesthetics,” Tuckey says. In addition to shooing away birds nesting in the rafters, digging to connect the old stables to the city’s service lines for gas and plumbing, reglazing skylights, and waterproofing and insulating the roof and walls, the architects highlighted the truss by painting it white to match the newly sheet-rocked ceiling and chimneylike baffles added around skylights. Then came the work of making the space function in the open-ended ways that Doherty wanted. As kitchens are centers of home life, Tuckey first built in the flexibility there by installing a compact culinary center (an oven, counter, sink, refrigerator and pantry) within one of three boxy whitewashed volumes that sit like art installations in the space. The onewall kitchen also serves as a room divider that

Industry reacts to Clean Growth Strategy announcement With the Government’s long awaited Clean Growth Strategy published today (12th October), many of the industry’s top organisations have voiced their opinions. The Solar Trade Association (STA) argued that the UK government is ‘artificially holding back’ solar revolution costs consumers and limits community & business action, with no explicit new measures to boost current deployment which has plummeted and which has been kept afloat by progressive planning policies by some local authorities.

separates a living/dining area from a study and stairs down to the shop. When not in use, the kitchen disappears behind pocket doors. Another boxy partition houses a toilet with an adjacent shower and lavatory, while a traylike box that holds a sleeping loft is perched above in the rafters like a cozy nest. JTD relied on humble materials to keep the overall costs down. The cabinets, a closet, and the sleeping loft’s walls are made from particleboard; door handles are pine. Kitchen and bath fittings are fashioned from unadorned copper pipes. Elsewhere, luxury lies in the finishes. Paint covering the attic’s ceiling, walls, and floor is of high quality. The spare-looking bathing room is clad floor-to-ceiling in hand-glazed ceramic Portuguese tiles. Its Japanese-style soaking tub was custom-built in Sweden. The craftsmanship in these details is what Doherty wished to celebrate, just as she does with the artisanal dresses, perfumes, and housewares she carries in her shop. In that way, “it’s her very own chapel,” Tuckey says.

Chris Hewett, STA policy manager said: “It does seem extraordinary that when a technology as vital to the world’s future as solar is asking, not for any new public support, but for simply a level playing field with other technologies that the Government is not moving to respond. This technology will dominate global power supply in years to come so in the interests of UK plc, the Government needs to stop putting the UK solar industry at a competitive disadvantage. “We will be looking to the Autumn Statement for the measures we need urgently to level the playing field for solar power.” The WWF also commented on the published strategy, with head of energy and climate, Gareth RedmondKing saying: “The strategy’s ambition is to be welcomed, however the details fall short of what we need to lead the UK to a green and prosperous future. The news on improving homes is a victory for owners, renters and landlords; and more money for off-shore wind – the cheapest form of generation – is great news. But overall the UK Government admits that it will miss most of its targets. “They are not delivering the emissions reductions needed in the next decade, relying instead on past success to offset missed targets with the rapid power decarbonisation that we’ve seen to date. This risks passing on a worse situation to the next generation. The UK Government has much more work to do in putting forward credible policies to close a carbon gap of nearly 10% by 2032. We have been a global climate leader, but if we set out plans that don’t meet our own targets to meet the global threat of climate change, then we will have so much further to go to meet the more ambitious international ones agreed in Paris.” But the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) were happier with the announcement. They said “the Clean Growth Strategy is a positive signal that the Government understand the significant opportunities for the UK that moving to a low carbon economy can bring. They have listened to the industry by providing a clearer longer-term trajectory for improving the energy efficiency standards of existing homes, and adopted our own aspiration for upgrading as many of these as possible to EPC Band C by 2035.”

Swiss Team Wins 2017 Solar Decathlon building, NeighborHub promotes sustainable activities among residents of urban neighborhoods, providing space for educational workshops, community meals, local markets, and even bicycle repair.

Despite hurricane-related delivery setbacks, the multifunctional space sweeps the DOE-sponsored competition. The Swiss Team took first place in this year’s U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Decathlon in Denver. The communal flex space, NeighborHub, was found to be the best blend of smart energy production, innovation, and market potential among the 11 entries. University of Maryland’s reACT home, integrating Native American environmental ethics, took second place, while UC Berkeley and University of Denver’s stackable multifamily design, RISE, finished third. The student teams participated in a total of 10 contests over nine days, in which industry professionals evaluated each building’s performance, livability, and appeal. In a test of energy and water efficiency, students carried out everyday tasks within the homes, such as cooking and cleaning. The Swiss Team took an unconventional approach to its Solar Decathlon design by creating a multifunctional community space instead of a traditional home. More than a sustainable

The winning team is made up of 250 students from four Swiss schools and 150 supervisors from professional and academic sectors, who named their collaborative effort “The Swiss Living Challenge.” The 44 team members attending the event had to scramble through construction, after Hurricane Harvey and flooding in the Port of Houston delayed one of their 12 shipping containers. Despite this setback, they pulled off first place in six out of the ten contests, sweeping the overall Solar Decathlon competition with a 50-point lead. The 2017 Solar Decathlon teams were selected nearly two years ago through a competitive process, representing a variety of design approaches and building technologies. They targeted a broad range of individuals, including emptynesters, low-income buyers, families recovering from natural disasters, and tribal communities. The Solar Decathlon requires student teams to design, build, and operate full-sized, sustainable homes with an eye towards market potential. “This prestigious competition engages students from across the country and internationally to develop the skills and knowledge to become the next generation of energy experts,” says Linda Silverman, event director. “Together, we’re ensuring that employers have the qualified workers they need to support American job growth.”

Al-Jawad Pike combines brick, concrete and timber for restrained London home extension

“Matter-of-fact” materials such as concrete, brick, and timber in muted tones have been used to create this extension to a family home in Stoke Newington, north London. London-based architects Al-Jawad Pike expanded the Victorian property for a teacher, a TV producer, and their young daughter. The studio was asked to create a new cooking and dining area that directly overlooked the garden – replacing a former kitchen it said had been cramped and dark, with views to the outdoors obstructed by a small utility annex. The studio, which is lead by Jessam Al-Jawad and Dean Pike, designed the extension as one open space and employed simple materials in a restrained colour palette. Grey brick walls have been paired with Douglas fir floor boards, while concrete has been used for the kitchen work surfaces. Oak finished with natural oil has also been used for cabinetry including integrated shelving. This aesthetic was largely inspired by Belgian architect Juliaan Lampens, who is recognised for his use of concrete on the interior and exterior of buildings. Lampens’ work also informed a project by architects Clauwers & Simon, which made extensive use of board-marked concrete to build a rural home in Belgium’s Limburg province. “His unusual combinations of matter-of-fact materials were a significant influence,” Al-Jawad told Dezeen. “We wanted to avoid using paint as much as possible.” “The use of grey [bricks] was a subtle reference to brutalism, and combining it with the room’s concrete and oak joinery elements seemed an interesting way to offset a rough surface with some refinement,” he added. A brick staircase illuminated by a skylight links the new kitchen to the original house. Daylight also filters through from an oak-framed full-height window at the front of the extension, which slides open to allow access to the garden.

CT1 and Westfield shopping Centre CT1 which is now commonly known as the No 1 sealant on the market has around 25 accreditations to its name. It has the highest standard for specifiers, architects and engineers with accreditations such as ETAG 022, ISEGA, EC1 to list just a few. It is now been tested and approved as the ultimate eco-friendly product. CT1 is a revolutionary and unique hybrid polymer formulation it replaces several products that would be used on any project. Therefore, it owns and is credited with the infamous strapline “The Snag List Eliminator “. CT1 seals leaks instantly and prevents future leaks on that application spot, it seals and bonds on wet surfaces even under water. CT1 is used and praised by many for the numerous benefits and is deemed by architects and specifiers as the ultimate “get of jail” card… will do the job first time around all the time and can be guaranteed it’s got the job done. It has been used on various p r o j e c t s , ve r y p a r t i c u l a r, tricky projects where no other construction product would work. Ken Hodgson from Axis 3 Design, who has over 20 years’ experience in architectural practice and provided a high level of intellectual capital over a wide spectrum of construction. These projects vary from commercial, retail, residential and local government. They use the best products and adapt best practice. Ken has mentioned the firm started specifying CT1 following several recommendations from other architectural firms.

“We have made considerable time and cost savings using CT1 on refurbishment projects with underfloor heating. Investigating the location of pipes or heating mats was costly and time consuming, direct mechanical fixings may have caused major damage to the systems so we investigated CT1 as a direct adhesion between the existing concrete floor substrate and proposed MF partition tracks. The system works perfectly and in tests we found the head and base tracks harder to move than with screw fixings. We wouldn’t hesitate to use CT1 in this scenario again.” Its safe to say, it’s as “safe as houses” is an understatement seeing as CT1 is used in nearly all new builds now. Many of the UK’s icons have been bonded and fixed with CT1- such as The London Eye, London War Memorial, Diana’s memorial fountain, it’s also been used on new icons such as The Westfield Shopping Centre in London. By Design Sealants have used CT1 on the mammoth centre and are pleased to be very much associated and endorse CT1. So, when you’re walking around from shop to shop remember that CT1 has helped in your Westfield experience and continues to mend, re-build and build the UK. Brio architectural hardware made an adventurous curved door project a reality for an innovative wedding venue in north Devon.

Tunnels Beaches is a network of hand carved tunnels leading to sheltered beaches and a tidal Victorian bathing pool at Ilfracombe, the location of a breathtaking beach front wedding venue operated by Devon Beach Weddings. The bespoke building curving out of the rock means there are no concerns about the UK weather and whatever turn it takes it is all visible through curved bi-folding glazed doors – whether opened or closed. The owner had the idea to refurbish and at the same time to extend the upper story of the curved building by 2 metres, installing curved bi-folding glazed doors and thereby increasing capacity from 130 guests to 160. With a full house for weddings in 2017, (120+ weddings booked), over 100 weddings already booked for 2018 and prime dates in 2019 booking fast, the extension was a must. Awlwood Joinery already had a good relationship with the owners Jamie and Zoe McLintock having worked with them at the Tunnels Beaches Bath House – an old Victorian bath house – which was turned in to wedding accommodation for the venues guests, so when the scheme was mooted to install curving bi-folding doors the McLintock’s turned to David Wray at Awlwood Joinery. “It wasn’t anything we had done before but we are skilled guys and the concept is not beyond the reach of man – after all we can send men to the moon – so we undertook the commission. The architect, RGP of Barnstaple, came up with a scheme and we did as they instructed – but with fewer doors (two sets, opening out). The design included wood cladding and lots of steel. “We opted for the Brio Weatherfold 4s system after talking to Bob Harrison at Hebden & Holding architectural ironmonger and the Brio team which takes panels up to 1 metre wide. The decision was led by the architect’ plans and the constraints of the timber as you cannot have huge pieces of curved timber so we had to make up the doors from smaller pieces that would eventually be bolted together on site. The actual frame was put together by the owner’s site carpenters.”

Brio’s 286 Dual Point Lock system launched last year has been joined by Brio’s 288 Lever Furniture to give joiners a deluxe option to offer their customers who now, more than ever, are looking for aesthetics as well as practicality. Brio’s 286 Dual Point Lock is suitable for Brio’s tough exterior folding system Weatherfold 4s with timber or aluminium panels and for single hinge panels, such as French doors, up to 3.5 metres high, offering an alternative to the standard flushbolts. It is both ultra secure and aesthetically pleasing. Rather than having the standard flushbolt at the top and the bottom of the door system on the inside of the property the end user can now choose a more sophisticated finish with the 288 lever handle readily accessible in the central part of the door so there is no reaching up or bending down to operate bolts. “I am also impressed with Brio R&D – they are always coming up with new ideas and fixes. Best on the market. The solutions are effective and the Brio representatives are helpful and thoughtful – that’s a one-off!” According to David Newton, General Manager UK at Brio, the demand for bi-folding and sliding exterior and interior doors is set to continue apace, with a variety of aesthetic demands from delicate ‘floating’ glass systems to commercial style projects such as this example in North Devon. “What this means in practice is that Brio, with its range of product and flexible attitude, will continue to keep pace with the architect’s need for innovative product that can transform anything they design on paper into reality,” he says. For more details on the BRIO product range visit

David Wray says: “I am very pleased with the results especially with Brio’s new dual point locking mechanism. Most bi-folding doors are locked top and bottom which means reaching up and bending down to operate. The new Brio system is a finger locking mechanism. I am so impressed with it I am using it on all jobs. It may be more expensive but it is well worth the investment for the huge improvement and simplified operation and it looks so much better.
