EasyCabin Are Ecstatic As Their Statics Head North For Nixon Hire Nixon Plant Hire have invested in a large fleet of eco-static welfare units manufactured by the Luton based company, AJC Trailers Limited.
This brand new order is for AJC’s EasyCabin environmentally biased, Ecostatic 22 and 28 welfare units. Although Nixon Hire currently operates a substantial fleet of EasyCabin welfare units, this is the first time that Nixon have opted for the EasyCabin Ecostatic range. Commenting on their latest investment, Graham Nixon, Nixon’s Hire managing director said, “The decision to upgrade and enhance our temporary accommodation fleet was driven by demand from our clients requesting eco-biased units.” “AJC EasyCabin have themselves invested heavily in innovation and green technology, therefore when we evaluated their Ecostatic units it soon became apparent that, in our opinion, these were the most environmentally advanced welfare units available,” confirmed Mr. Nixon. Lisa Gillet, AJC’s sales director added, “We are naturally delighted that a market leading temporary accommodation hire firm, such as Nixon Hire, are committing themselves to our Ecostatic range. This is a testament to the foresight and creative thinking developer-update.co.uk
that our design teams are applying to bring real environmental benefits to all users of temporary accommodation. Environmental, energy-saving features are at the heart of the Ecostatic range.” The Ecostatic 22 is an eco-welfare unit that provides safe and comfortable facilities for up to twelve persons. The unit features a market changing modern appearance compared to other welfare cabins in the hire industry. This modern cabin includes energy efficient technology of automatic start/stop generator functionality and battery charging, with simplistic heating controls and 12v LED slim line recessed ceiling lights. There are also useful USB sockets, external lights and a fridge. Also included is a spacious canteen, plus hygienic toilets and a handy spacious drying room. Power is delivered via EasyCabin’s unique Ecosmart technology which regulates the power usage of the generator, reducing the fuel consumption dramatically when compared to the industry standard of a continually running generator.
The EasyCabin Ecostatic 28 has all the features and benefits of the Ecostatic 22; however this unit provides additional office space for two persons and is one of the most ecofriendly and efficient static welfare units available in today’s market. Founded in 1967, Nixon Hire is a family-run business employing nearly 500 people across an ever-expanding depot network. With over 50 years of experience they supply quality plant, tools, and temporary accommodation alongside portable toilet products supported by associated services. Nixon Hire currently has 13 depots in the north of England and throughout Scotland. AJC EasyCabin has recently been awarded a Green Apple Environment Award in an international campaign to find the greenest companies, councils and communities. AJC competed against more than 500 other nominations in the Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice and were presented with a trophy and certificate at an award presentation ceremony in the Houses of Parliament, London, in November 2017.

Flooring specialist limits staff driving time to boost safety
Wakefield Rutland Mills regeneration plan approved
Dorset metal decking specialist SMD Ltd is limiting the number of miles its staff drive daily to improve safety. The company has a fleet of vehicles covering more than 550,000 miles a year.
Plans have been approved to redevelop a complex of derelict grade-II listed Victorian mill buildings on the River Calder in Wakefield into a new arts centre.
SMD has introduced a raft of road safety policies including an individual maximum of 100 miles of driving a day to reduce tiredness. Site operatives working away from home are also required to stay in hotels rather than driving long distances. The company’s 34 Renault vans covered a total of 551,447 miles in 2016 transporting staff and materials around the UK. Twenty-five new vehicles have been added to the fleet this year. Managing director Ben Pratten said: “We have a duty of care to all employees and safety is our number one priority – not just on-site but in every aspect of our work. We have more than 100 staff working on projects across the UK and huge amounts of materials being transported to construction sites ranging from Devon to north Scotland. It is imperative therefore to have a set of commonsense policies in place to safeguard SMD staff when they are on the road.”
The plans drawn up by architect Hawkins/Brown will see nine 19th century buildings turned into a mixed-use creative quarter for music, film, TV, design and new media. Developer City & Provincial Properties in partnership with Wakefield Council aim to create a ‘northern extension’ of their media type hub – Tileyard Studio in central London. The £80m redevelopment plan includes construction of new external stairs and lift cores, repairs and alterations to a damaged chimney to create new sculptural steel lattice replicating its former size. A total of 32,000 sq ft of space will be created in new buildings built in brick alongside the mill buildings with structural engineering provided by Structural & Civil and M&E design by Hulley and Kirkwood.
Marley Eternit Helps Build Wooden Rollercoaster supplied 327 bundles of its Blue Label Western Red Cedar Shakes, which were used to create over 800 m2 of roofing for the roller coaster.
Marley Eternit was chosen to build the huts on Alton Towers Resort’s latest attraction – Wicker Man. Wicker Man is the UK’s first new wooden roller coaster to be built in over 20 years and the first to combine fire and wood. Costing over £16 million to build, it offers riders a truly immersive experience, with a fiery twist. As part of the story, which is set in the world of the Beornen, a fictional community living in the woods, a few huts were placed around the wooden track. In order to continue the woodland theme, the company
“The task of building a rollercoaster which combines fire and wood required careful planning in order to bring our vision to life. However, for us, it’s not just about creating the ride itself but also its surroundings to deliver a truly immersive experience to our guests,” said Neil Walker from Merlin Entertainment, who also project managed the construction. The choice for Marley Eternit’s Shakes was due to their robust finish and the reassurance provided by the accreditation to the Certi-Grade quality assurance label as certified by the Cedar Shingle and Shake Bureau
(CSSB). Moreover, the shakes also require low maintenance and blend into the wider surroundings very well. Another one of the benefits of using the Western Red Cedar Shakes is that it has one of the lowest carbon footprints, representing a new carbon sink upon delivery. This means that more carbon is stored in the shake than is emitted during its harvest, manufacture and transportation combined. “It was crucial the new huts were designed sensitively to blend into the wider design of the Wicker Man ride, complementing the overall aesthetic Merlin was keen to achieve. In commercial projects such as this, the lightweight nature of our Shakes together with their ease of installation, play an important role in ensuring they were able to meet the deadline,” commented Daniel Redfern from Marley Eternit. developer-update.co.uk

The new door system has been successfully fire tested, and can incorporate any EI-90 glass that has been tested into steel framing to a maximum glass area of 3.97 sq metres.
Wrightstyle introduces enhanced fire door system Wrightstyle, the leading international supplier of advanced glazing systems, has introduced a new door system that provides 90 minutes of integrity and insulation (EI90). The new 8050 series of thermally broken fire doors are fully compatible with Wrightstyle’s SR60 curtain walling system, and provide a new level of aesthetic appeal.
It adds a further option to Wrightstyle’s already extensive range of fire and smoke resistant doors, which include a range of unlatched doors in double or single leaf format – a breakthrough fully-glazed fire door system. Previously, Wrightstyle’s F1 glazed door and screen system, offered non-thermally broken fire protection up to EI-60. The new system therefore adds a further 30 minutes of protection with the significant and added benefit of thermally broken profiles. The SR series curtain wall and roof glazing system provides architects and designers with flexibility in glass dimensions and façade design, allowing large areas to be spanned without the need for a secondary support assembly. “The inclusion of a thermal break in this new door system gives it added insulation, while allowing for slimline steel framing,” said Denis Wright, Wrightstyle’s chairman.
The door system is available in either single leaf (1606mm wide x 3062mm high or 1534mm wide x 3222mm high) or double leaf (3102mm wide x 3062mm high or 2958mm wide x 3222mm high).
“It therefore combines the protective function of an advanced steel glazing system with the sleek aesthetics that architects and designers are looking for,” he said.
The doors, which will accept glass up to 60mm thick, can be used as a standalone product or incorporated into Wrightstyle’s SR60 curtain walling system, to provide a complete screen or façade of 90 minutes integrity and insulation.

Ecophon case study Golfnow, Belfast About the project: Architect: Mark Higgins, RPP Architects Main contractor: Heron Bros Ceiling contractor: Convery Ceilings Project size: 190 units Products: Solo™ Baffle
Technology company Golf Now has opened a new state-of-theart office in Belfast, having acquired BRS Golf, the company founded by County Down brothers Brian and Rory Smith. The company is operated by Golf Channel and is part of the NBC Sports Group. It is the leading provider of cloud-based online tee time booking systems to golf clubs in the UK, Ireland and the US, with over 1500 customers worldwide. In order to accommodate its growing team, Golfnow has moved to brand new offices at City Quays 1 in Belfast. Mark Higgins of RPP Architects was the interior designer working on the project, along with the design firm EMMA Architecten. He explained that Ecophon’s Solo Baffles were utilised in the board room, meeting rooms, breakout spaces, and cafeteria/ kitchen areas in order to assist with acoustic quality. “They are a
nice, simple, aesthetically pleasing product, allowing easy access to building services above. They have worked well in practice improving the acoustics in a busy open plan working environment.” Ecophon’s Andrew Acheson said, “I think they’ve achieved a very interesting look with the baffles and plasterboard edging.” Mark also added, “We had good local support from the Ecophon team and the client is very happy with their new workspace.”
Spotlight on Ecophon Solo Baffles
Ecophon Solo Baffles are easily demountable and are often the acoustic solution of choice, primarily when it isn’t possible to install a wall-to-wall ceiling. For example, in buildings where it’s necessary to maintain the volume so that natural light can fill a room via skylights. Solo Baffles are also an option when TABS (Thermally Activated Building System) is chosen as a cooling system. They are also used in activity based working environments (ABV), where good acoustics are just as crucial to success as the visual aspect of the design. The baffles can be suspended using several different systems offered by Ecophon. Ecophon Solo Baffles are made from high density glass wool with Akutex™ FT surface on both sides. In fact, the majority of Ecophon acoustic systems are made from third-generation glass wool, containing more than 70% recycled glass and. A plant-based binder. This is the result of our efforts to continuously work to reduce the environmental impact from our products. For more information visit: www.ecophon.com/uk/Sustainability-web/
Getting Children Involved In Gardening Gardening is the perfect way for children to learn new skills, have fun and to be creative, whatever their age. Studies have also showed that children are more likely to perform better at school, develop healthier eating habits and an interest in the environment and nature when gardening. There are many ways to encourage children to get involved in gardening, and specialists www.oecogardenrooms.co.uk talk through some of the best ideas below: • Growing vegetables and planting flowers Growing vegetables and planting flowers is a great way of getting children involved in gardening. It can feed curiosity as they watch their seeds sprout, learn how plants grow and how to look after them, as well as make them more likely to try all of the different vegetables and fruits once ripe. Tomatoes, peas, potatoes and radishes are among some of the easier vegetables to grow in the garden and are perfect developer-update.co.uk
for beginners. Salad leaves are also a good choice as these can be planted throughout the summer and will be ready to pick in as little as 3 weeks, and if harvested right they will continue growing so can be picked again and again. Quick growing flowers that will keep impatient children interested include Nasturtium (a colourful flower which also acts as a natural pest control in vegetable gardens), Sunflowers (a fast growing, beautiful flower which is a favourite with bees) and Wild Strawberries (they require minimal maintenance, produce a crop quickly and are a great sweet treat for children). Another good tip is to get your children to make their own plant labels; these can be brightly coloured and can be used to mark what seeds have been planted and when.
15 • Give children their own area If you have enough space, giving your child their own special area to learn and play in can be very rewarding. Make sure that the area chosen gets enough sunlight and is easily accessible, you can also decorate it by painting the fences in their favourite colour and adding their own toys and furniture to make the space unique. You can always start off small by utilising a couple of plant pots which the children can decorate themselves, moving to a bigger area as they learn and want to do more in the garden. It is also a good idea to buy a set of childfriendly gardening tools so that they can feel a sense of independence and be able to do more in their own special garden. Give them creative licence to do whatever they want to their garden, whether it’s growing vegetables and flowers, creating a wildlife habitat or creating an enclosure for rabbits or guinea pigs. Provide them with suitable material to create the space they want and provide help and advice when needed.
• Take photos and document the progress in a diary Documenting the gardens progress throughout the year is a great way of seeing how things change during the seasons, how plants and vegetables grow over time and a way of learning what works and what doesn’t in your garden. Taking pictures and keeping a journal is the perfect way to keep children interested as they can document their experiences, make growth charts and write about how the food they have grown tastes. You can also set up a blog or social media pages so that they can share their experiences with friends and family. One thing to make sure of during the whole process is to keep the children involved as much as possible, ask them lots of questions and get their feedback as well. At the end of the day you want them to feel a sense of pride when they go out into the garden, a trait that they will undoubtedly carry with them throughout their lives and be willing to teach their children too.
MAY THE FORCE - MOD CHOOSES RINNAI HOT WATER RINNAI HOT WATER – INSTANT, CONTINUOUS, LIMITLESS AND SENSIBLY ECONOMIC FOR EVERY TYPE OF COMMERCIAL SITE Rinnai, the UK leader in hot water systems, has recently completed an installation of 20 HDC 1500i units on shower blocks at an MoD barracks. LPG is the onsite fuel for all the Rinnai systems. Rinnai designed the systems in close co-operation with the local contractor who installed all the units – and the on-site facilities management company. Rinnai continuous flow condensing units were specified based on previously completed projects on many army camps spread throughout the country. The end-user, the facilities provider and the installing contractor were all agreed on the excellence of Rinnai product performance, energy savings on fuel, product reliability & durability. Comprehensive site surveys were completed between Rinnai and the services provider and designs for the systems were based on using two of what was the then plant rooms which housed two extremely large calorifiers. Each plant room was re-engineered with the installation of 10 high performance,
high efficiency Rinnai HDC1500i (59.5kW) continuous flow, instantaneous water heaters per plant room. Each plant room of 10 units were installed in ‘banks’ of five units and set with the Rinnai (MECS) Manifold Electronic Controls. This intelligent energy optimising system brings additional water levels into operation only when required, meaning energy is only used when needed. The MECS system also ensures system longevity as it ensures that each water heater in the bank is used for the same period of time over its life cycle guaranteeing unnecessary wear and even usage. Each of the ‘banks’ of five units were also designed and supplied with a common header flue system which provides a compact, neat installation, as well as minimising plant room terminations and offering a quicker, easier installation and a more efficient maintenance programme. Rinnai’s HDC1500, also known as the Infinity Plus Cascade, is an award-winning range of units. The range was developed to guarantee the maximum amount of affordable, ecologically friendly safe-temperature controlled hot water on demand at any one time by even the heaviest commercial user, even at peak times. In this case an army barracks. The Rinnai 1500i is engineered to the highest standard and is technologically advanced with a host of features giving added value. Both Rinnai HDC1500 internal and external models turn in an impressive energy performance of 105% net efficiency. *Each Infinity Plus Cascade module comprises a minimum of two HDC1500 units and as any number of modules can be manifolded, the capacity for never ending ‘cascading’ hot water is infinite. Installation is straightforward and simple – each Rinnai HDC 1500i Infinity Plus Cascade comes with its own precision engineered rack, so there is no need to fabricate one or get involved with major re-jigging of pipe work or excessive flueing, the rack eliminates these timeconsuming procedures, streamlining installation and helping keep remedial costs to a minimum.

The benefits for the end user are big savings on fuel over other forms of water heating solutions, with the added advantage that there is no need to give up valuable space to install a cylinder. And there are no standing losses to account for as occur with traditional stored hot water systems. The Rinnai system produces useable hot water on demand, at the turn of a tap or the push of a shower button. The relatively compact footprint of the units also means they can be housed in tight spaces and still be easily accessible for maintenance and servicing. According to Chris Goggin: “Rinnai Infinity Plus 1500i Cascade represents the best value-for-money commercial
hot water solution on the market today, delivered direct to site in one complete, easy to manage package. Its impressive energy performance ratings also make it a highly desirable development at a time when everybody is looking at decreasing energy bills and maximising energy efficiency.” The Ministry of Defence (MOD) estate covers around 240,000 hectares. It has 45,000 buildings, including barracks, airfields, naval establishments, military training estate, workshops, offices, messes, family housing, 700 scheduled archaeological monuments and more than 170 ‘sites of special scientific interest’. According to Chris Goggin, in charge of Operations: “Rinnai condensing continuous flow water heaters are low NoX, less than 50mg with gross efficiencies of 96-97% and recovery of 740 litres per hour at 50° Delta. All our units are A rated on ErP. The condensing process delivers 95% thermal efficiency, which translates to significant energy savings when compared to standard on-demand water heaters. Rinnai’s high efficiency condensing range of continuous flow water heaters, including the HDC1500 with its 96-97% gross efficiency, covers a vast number of requirements. * In accordance with BS EN 677 For more information on the RINNAI product range visit
Panasonic Presents the Future of Heating and Cooling at Mostra Convegno in Milan Panasonic celebrated a double milestone at the biennial Mostra Convegno Expocomfort show in Milan this March, marking 100 years of the company and 60 years since the launch of its first air-conditioning product. Panasonic hosted a buzzing stand to showcase new solutions for the residential and commercial markets, while an insightful press conference was the ideal platform to present its global and European growth strategies. Mostra Convegno is the biggest event in Europe for exhibiting excellence in climate control and renewable energies. The show opened its doors on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, with Panasonic hosting its press conference on the first day. To open, Laurent Abadie, CEO of Panasonic Europe, shared key milestones in the history of the company, from when it was founded to today. He presented the first residential air conditioner from Panasonic, which was launched in Japan in 1958, and traced the evolution of its heating and cooling
business strategy towards the innovative and environmentallyfriendly products in the market today: “In the spirit of the company’s founding father, Konosuke Matsushita, we want to develop technological solutions that respond to the philosophy of ‘a better Life, a better world ‘, by always placing them at the heart of people’s lives.” Enrique Vilamitjana, managing director of Panasonic Air Conditioning Europe continued: “The objective of Panasonic AirConditioning Europe is to become a leader in the European heating and cooling market. By 2020, the Panasonic solutions package will be increasingly focused on the supply of commercial air conditioning and air to water heat pumps (Aquarea), without abandoning residential products. The requirements of the new products will be based on the following key elements: efficiency, air quality, environmental respect and connectivity.” Visitors to Panasonic’s stand had a preview of some of the new
innovations and developments for 2018. With an aim of providing a wider range of efficient and more environmental solutions, Panasonic announced a full switch to R32, consolidating all its residential and commercial airconditioning ranges, including its newly designed RAC floor consoles, split, multisplit and cassettes, to be compatible with this latest refrigerant technology. Thinking about the refrigeration market and the demands of the latest regulations on atmospheric emissions of fluorinated gases, Panasonic has introduced a new range of CO2 trans-critical condensing units, available in 4kW and 15kW, ideal for applications in supermarkets, convenience stores and petrol stations. The unit will be available in the standard version and in the special version, with
high resistance to saline atmospheres. Panasonic continues to innovate with revolutionary control solutions, including the introduction of Aquarea Service Cloud and datanavi. The Aquarea Smart Cloud interface has been enhanced with the new Aquarea Service Cloud platform, dedicated to installers and maintenance workers, who can now perform servicing and maintenance tasks on Aquarea H Generation heat pumps remotely. New datanavi technology, compatible with the CZ-RTC5B command,
simplifies the management of commercial and industrial air-conditioning systems, providing operational, manual and historical data for faster and more efficient servicing. With 100 years of technical history under its belt and 60 years of heating and cooling expertise, a strong emphasis on environmental awareness and a clear growth plan for Europe and beyond, Panasonic is set to make big strides in the European HVAC market in the coming years. Flexible magnetic and ferrous materials provide architects, designers and developers with a unique and versatile method of transforming building interiors. Whether a retail store, public building, contemporary office interior or a residential building, flexible magnetic and attractive ferrous materials work together with visually stunning results. Creating striking graphics, display walls, signage and creative planning spaces that capture attention, inspire, and can be changed or updated as desired. Flexible and attractive The flexible nature of supamag® magnetic sheet allows it to be applied to flat or curved surfaces, creating a magnetic face to which digifilm® ferrous media is attracted. Once in contact with the magnetic surface the flexible ferrous media is held in place indefinitely and will not move until replaced. digifilm® ferrous media provides a vibrant, high quality print finish that brings designs to life, creating stunning large format displays and graphics walls. The thin and flexible properties of ferrous media allow multiple layers to be overlaid on top of one another to instantly update graphics and displays. developer-update.co.uk
Simple and cost effective Changing or adding additional layers of ferrous media is quick, easy and doesn’t require specialist installation teams, simply roll the layer of media on or off of the magnetic face. This ease of application allows users to refresh and update their visual spaces cost effectively, without downtime and as often as required. Creative spaces Visual planning walls and spaces are now commonplace within modern workplaces, typically providing a dry-wipe writing surface. By using supaferro® flexible and magnetically receptive ferrous material to create the dry-wipe surface the planning space becomes interactive, allowing plans, images and notes to be magnetically attached to the surface. Safe and secure supamag® and supaferro® are available with a range of high strength adhesives which bond securely to
any non-porous surface, allowing installation during the second fix phase of a build or retro fitting at a later date. CT1 real life case study:
Axis 3 Design and refurbishment projects.
CT1 is a unique hybrid polymer formulation, and is the only sealant available on the market with no solvents. This unique formulation has been awarded with over 25 accreditations and tested over 25 times by independent testing bodies.
The ultimate development in bonding and sealing, based on hybrid polymer formulation, CT1 offers a unique adhesion on virtually any material without the need for additional fixings. CT1 has earned the name The Snag List Eliminator, does the job first time every time. Therefore architects, specifiers and engineers along with the rest of the construction trade, not want but DEMAND CT1 is used on the job. It’s really a get out of jail card. We guarantee it will work, first time around, every time. You will never have to revisit the job. CT1 working life, if in an area free of internal and external contaminates will last up to 25 years. Boasting accreditations such as ETAG 022, EC1, ISEGA approved for food handling areas, CT1 is also the only sealant and adhesive to have been approved by NAAF. The Norwegian Asthma and Allergy association. Which is one of the most stringent bodies for testing products for people with any type of allergy or Asthma. CT1 was tested for several months and has a stamp or approval from them. It has been recommended to be used on new builds and used in homes that have asthma or allergy inhibitors. Many architects and specifiers use this as its their get out of jail card. This is can be used on nearly every construction material there is, not only seals leaks instantly it also forms the strongest construction adhesive available on the market. With over 25 accreditations to test its strength, durability, it’s components, it is the eco-friendliest product on the market. Test and approved, not just a statement. Fact. developer-update.co.uk
Therefore real-life case studies are always best to demonstrate its reputation as the UK’s number 1 sealant on the market. Axis 3 design’s Ken Hodgson, associate for Axis 3, stated that they started specifying CT1 following several recommendations. Ken also said they have made considerable time and cost savings using CT1 on refurbishment projects with underfloor heating. Investigating the location of pipes or heating mats was costly and time consuming, direct mechanical fixings may have caused major damage to the systems so they investigated CT1 as a direct adhesion between the existing concrete floor substrate and proposed MF partition tracks. Ken stated that “The system works perfectly and in tests we found the head and base tracks harder to move than with screw fixings. We wouldn’t hesitate to use CT1 in this scenario again” Axis 3 Design Ltd, Hen Hodgson Associate, mobile 07904326766 For 4testing results, please go to www.ct1ltd.com here you can download the health and safety sheets also please call head office if test results are required. 028 30834892. Unwanted fire alarms put lives at risk The complexity of buildings, density of occupation and growing user demands are heightening the urgency to introduce governance to ensure that life safety equipment fulfils its true purpose of preventing fire and saving lives. Ben Jeater, Siemens Building Technologies GB Fire Portfolio Manager, highlights key health and safety issues regarding fire safety protection and looks at how these can be addressed. Unwanted fire alarms caused by equipment account for approximately two-thirds of all false alarms, amounting to over 140,000 per annum; a figure that is unacceptably high. The correct design, technology selection, installation and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems virtually eliminate unwanted alarms. False call-outs not only impact the organisations themselves in terms of loss of earnings and loss of reputation, but are also a public safety issue. When alarms go off repeatedly, there is a tendency for people to disregard them and in the case of a real fire, complacency could further endanger lives. Today’s technology resolves this issue and it is false economy to install fire detection systems that put the public and organisations at risk. Most needless call-outs are caused either by badly maintained systems, or poor quality technology that cannot distinguish false triggers such as burnt toast, steam or dust from real fire signals. Unwanted alarm alerts still automatically instigate calls to the emergency services. Due to the high number of unnecessary calldeveloper-update.co.uk
outs, which exert pressure on public sector resources, there is a growing prevalence of fines and regulation. A false alarm is referred to as an ‘unwanted fire signal’ as soon as the fire service is summoned. The pressure on firefighting resources has led the London Fire Brigade (LFB) to introduce a stringent new rule to
29 fine organisations if they have more than nine false alarm call-outs in a year. However, the LFB states that despite a 7.3% drop in the number of call-outs after the introduction of the charge, they are still responding to false alerts every fifteen minutes on average. False alarms generated from remotely monitored fire detection and fire alarm systems cost businesses and Fire and Rescue Service authorities an estimated ÂŁ1 billion a year in the UK. There is a strong feeling across the fire industry that more stringent measures need to be taken against repeat offenders, to ensure there is a strong deterrent against tolerating sub-standard equipment and poor performance by installers and service providers. Fire detection systems simply should not cause unwanted alarms; if an organisation suffers from excessive false alarms, the root cause is either poor technology, or poor service and maintenance support, and this is an addressable issue. The effect that false alarms have on business continuity is immense. Lost working hours and the upheaval of evacuating premises add up to significant financial loss. At Siemens we work with organisations across a range of industries to select and apply the correct fire detectors for their location and usage; this alone reduces the chances of an unwanted alarm from the detector itself. It is the responsibility of fire alarm companies to not only install and maintain the technology, but also to advise on best use and minimisation of potential unwanted fire signals. Siemens has developed its own solution to the problem by developing advanced fire detection systems that not only deliver full protection across all buildings, but also ensure there is no risk of false alarms and the subsequent disruption that they would cause. These systems are designed to operate in extremely demanding environmental conditions where immediate and accurate fire detection is vital to life safety and business continuity. Importantly, they also determine false fire phenomena due to issues such as toasters, poor housekeeping, airborne particles, welding, humidity and temperature change, and will not alarm in these instances. It is vital that manufacturers and installers are trained to identify and assist with customer requirements, risks and business operations. Engineering teams must be fully qualified to interpret customer specifications, CDM requirements, relevant legislation and British Standards, as well as the impact on health, safety and the environment. In particular they should be fully trained on all parts of BS 5839, the code of practice that prescribes the manner in which fire systems are designed, installed and maintained across the UK.
Ben concludes: “Our customers and the public rely on the consistent performance of their health and safety operations. As one of the founding global fire safety equipment manufacturers, Siemens understands the challenges facing organisations in managing and maintaining a safe environment, as well as adhering to stringent health and safety regulations. We believe that intelligent technology and engineering skills mean organisations can now take a zero tolerance attitude to the issue of false alarm signals being generated by the equipment that is meant to deliver high level protection. developer-update.co.uk
Clad in success
New Dublin construction business set to hit a million in its first year The new branch of a major architectural products supplier, which started trading in Dublin just eight months ago, is on target to hit the €1 million mark in its first year of trading. Vivalda, which is the UK market leader for the supply of cut-to-size cladding and facades for the construction industry, opened its doors in August 2017 and has seen its wide range of products find a receptive market in Ireland. The fast-growing business is backed by its UK-based parent company, which has nearly 20 years of experience in the specialist architectural claddings sector. Product safety and good quality service are the key reasons for Vivalda’s popularity in the Irish market, according to branch manager Darren Bowden, who hails from Athy, Co Kildare.
according to their ability to withstand fire, which gives our customers the assurance they need when specifying external cladding for major projects. “We also take great care preparing our façade boards before they are delivered on-site; ensuring that cladding is cut to exactly the right size – a bit like a huge jigsaw – so that when the product arrives, it can be fixed in place immediately. We can even pre-drill holes into the material to ensure quicker project delivery. It’s a continuation of the UK’s off-site bespoke fabrication model, one of the fastest-growing markets in construction. Asserting its safety credentials, Vivalda has recently won the contract to supply external cladding to Dublin’s New Priory Hall Apartments, the construction of which had been halted due to fears over its previous poor fire rating. Now in the reconstruction phase, Vivalda has supplied Natura cladding as the preferred external façade because of its excellent fire classification.
to invest in our own cutting and drilling technology and are, even at this early stage, giving serious consideration to bring forward the programme if we see current growth rates maintained.” Vivalda Dublin’s success is a good reflection of the strong growth seen in the construction industry across the whole island of Ireland. Darren concludes: “Certainly Aecom, the global construction company, recently predicted that we will see the sector grow by 14% for the rest of this year. And with such a positive mood in the industry, we’re feeling optimistic about the future. Vivalda Group has been a remarkable success story, thanks to the trust developed with architects, specifiers and contractors since it began trading back in 1999. Darren said: “Quality service and independence are the foundations of the business. We could never contemplate second best or outdated advice to customers, who now expect not only great products, great service but also informed, unbiassed advice on facades and cladding.”
He explained: “In the light of the dreadful events of Grenfell Tower in London, fire risk is understandably at the top of every architect’s and developer’s agenda. We distribute all the industry’s most respected brands, the vast majority of which are rated
Vivalda Ireland has big plans for the future. Darren said: “While I’ve been working closely with the UK team, mainly for technical support, I am confident that once we complete our first full year of trading, we will be taking on more people. We’ve also got plans

a better service,” said a delighted Mr Johnson. “Bevan were recommended to us by the truck dealer; this was the first time we’d used them but I certainly won’t be going anywhere else in the future.” In addition to the dropsides and bed, the front and rear bulkheads are fabricated from aluminium rather than the more conventionally used steel, while extensive use has also been made of stainless steel fixtures and fittings. “Presentation is all-important, so we wanted to keep the vehicle looking as good as possible, for as long as possible,” explained Mr Johnson. “Steelwork can become shabby over time, while standard bolts tend to rust and could easily spoil the vehicle’s white paintwork.”
Capital Roofing Centre’s new fleet flagship features a bespoke body design built in doublequick time by Bevan Specialist Products. The family-owned operator is based in Stoke-on-Trent and supplies a comprehensive range of materials to professional roofers and DIY enthusiasts throughout Staffordshire, Cheshire and beyond. Based on a 26-tonne DAF XF 510 chassis supplied by local dealer Imperial Commercials, the truck is equipped with a rear-mounted Atlas 135.2E crane which works with a brick and block grab. Bevan’s dropside body, meanwhile, features a gantry platform with conveniently-stowed, retractable step ladder – a sensor sounds an alarm if this is not folded away correctly before the vehicle moves off. Capital Roofing Managing Director Wayne Johnson came up with the idea for this unusual installation, which affords operatives quick and easy access to the vehicle bed without having to drop the sides. The bodybuilder then turned it into a reality. Although only 12 months old, the radio remote-controlled crane was removed from a previous vehicle prior to installation on the new one, developer-update.co.uk
Bevan also painted the vehicle before its Graphics team applied the operator’s eye-catching livery. The truck now doubles as a highly-effective mobile advertisement for Capital Roofing Centre’s business, when it’s out and about six days a week making deliveries of everything from roof tiles and slates, to guttering and skylights.
which also required a sub-frame. This process took significantly longer than planned. As a result, when the vehicle finally arrived at the Bevan Specialist Products’ base in Wednesbury, West Midlands, for fitment of the body, the pressure was on to achieve a quick turnaround.
Mr Johnson, whose wife Pam is also a Director, and brother Matt the company’s Logistics Manager, added: “Not only did Bevan complete the job quickly, but they also did so without compromising quality. Our new truck is clearly built to a very high standard and we couldn’t be more pleased with it.”
The Bevan team pulled out all the stops to help their new customer, completing the project in just four weeks. “They pushed it through their system very quickly and we couldn’t have asked for

he expansion of towns and cities has seen exponential use of impervious surfaces, resulting in artificially high rainwater runoff rate, posing new challenges for the construction industry. The lack of natural infiltration and incapability of the existing drainage systems to deal with the volume of rainfall is resulting in increased instances of flash flooding and standing water. This has prompted the introduction of Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) legislations by local authorities. New developments in built up, flood sensitive areas are now required to incorporate some form of SuDS to obtain planning permission. As Malcolm Wearing of CRM Rainwater Drainage explained, SuDS options are limited with a blue roof being, in most instances, the most efficient and cost-effective solution.
Bauder Ltd has launched its roofing solution for construction within flood sensitive, urban areas.
Bauder has originated a Blue Roof System which will simultaneously attenuate heavy rainfall and manage its discharge over a 12-24-hour period. The key component is a flow restrictor which comprises of a plate and an accumulation pipe. The plate is drilled with calculated holes that control the flow of water whilst ensuring the additional weight load is supported by the structure. The accumulation pipe manages the water volume in the case of a onein-a-hundred-year storm event whereby it will drain the water from the roof at a much quicker rate. The BauderBLUE roof will limit water egress to 5-10 litres per second per hectare, the same flow rates for regional greenfield sites. Each BauderBLUE roofing solution is unique, as calculations for the flow restrictor are specific to each project to ensure that the water run off during storm conditions meets drainage requirements of local planning authorities whilst controlling the time it takes to disperse the water. ‘The Bauder brand is recognised for the proactive approach we take to developing our roof systems and the high standards to which we deliver. With the introduction of the SuDS legislation and the subsequent requirements for developments in built up and flood sensitive areas, the evolution of our ever-popular green roof system was a natural process. Using rooftop and podium solutions will address the excess water issue at source by providing the necessary drainage to ensure structural integrity along with regulation compliance and optimal waterproofing’ Nigel Blacklock, technical director at Bauder You can find out more about the BauderBLUE roof system at www.bauder.co.uk/blue-roofs

Stair Platform Lift for Dean Court Hotel in York
Overlooking the iconic York Minster, the Dean Court Hotel is a historic building with 40 unique bedrooms individually designed with charm and personality. General manager, Simon Murphy initially contacted Ability Lifts to look at the possibility of providing a platform lift at the front of the building to enable wheelchair users to negotiate a flight of seven steps. After an initial survey, the Optimum 200 stair platform lift was chosen due to its sleek design when folded and the guard arms cleverly and neatly fold behind the platform when parked and not in use. The lift was specified with a 90 degree bend at the lower level to allow easy access in to the Hotel from street level with an 800mm x 700mm Special Platform Size to comply with strict City Planning Conditions, which ensured that foot traffic in front of the hotel was kept flowing whilst lift was in use given its close proximity for visitors to the magnificent York Cathedral. As the building is listed and in a conservation area, once again it was a requirement for the lift to match the existing aesthetics of the building so a high gloss black finish was provided. The standard offering platform size is 1250mm x 800mm (Part M Compliant) with an ample lifting capacity of 300kgs. Mr Simon Murphy commented “from the initial exploratory phone call to Ability Lifts to the final fitting of our new platform lift I was extremely impressed with all aspects of the service we received. Overall a very professional company in all areas, and I would certainly have no hesitation in using this company again or recommending them. GREAT BRITISH INNOVATION
Panasonic’s nanoe™ X Technology Delivers Fresh and Clean Air • nanoe™ X integrated with commercial air conditioning system • Air purification upgraded for bigger commercial applications • Ensures maximum comfort for commercial applications generating hydroxyl radicals (OH) for healthier air. The effectiveness of virus/bacteria removal has been drastically improved due to a wider OH production area which can now generate 4,800 billion, per second.
Panasonic’s nanoe™ technology has been upgraded to provide enhanced air purification for an even healthier, cleaner environment, making it ideal for many applications including hospitals, schools and hotels. Recent research from the World Health Organisation has found indoor air pollution, such as tobacco smoke, occupational dust and fumes, to be a risk factor of respiratory diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease*. nanoe™ X technology is currently available with Panasonic’s new R32 Floor Console and MU2/ PU2 90x90 indoor cassette units compatible with VRF, PACi and GHP heating and cooling solutions. New nanoe™ X technology helps to control allergens, bacteria and viruses, not only in homes, but also in commercial environments. nanoe™ X is a cost-effective way of improving air hygiene developer-update.co.uk
by preventing transmission of airborne pathogens. In the hospitality industry, such as hotels and restaurants, often the most obvious cause of concern, for staff and guests, is unpleasant odours caused by cleaning agents, cigarette smoke and kitchens. Air quality can also be impacted by renovation work and the presence of mould within ductwork and behind walls. nanoe™ X technology can manage these factors by reducing odours and harmful mould pathogens within the air, for a consistently pleasant environment. Panasonics nanoe™ X, which is ten times more powerful than its predecessor nanoe™, works by
OH oxidises chemicals and bacteria in the atmosphere, effectively removing them from the air making it safer to breathe. A higher concentration of OH radicals means that there is an even greater reduction in pollutants, for a cleaner environment. The nanoe™ X technology can work simultaneously with heating or cooling operation to remove pollen, pollution, fungi and even cigarette smoke from the air. It also reduces odours in the room and includes an internal dehumidifier to limit the propagation of mould and bacteria. nanoe™ X is currently available as part of Panasonic’s new MU2/ PU2 90x90 indoor cassette units and will be rolled out across all Panasonic air-conditioning solutions in due course. Panasonic unveils datanavi Solution for Heating & Cooling Maintenance • A new way to connect with your smartphone • Harnesses Panasonic’s unique ‘Light ID’ technology • Support tool for commercial AC commissioning and maintenance Panasonic has unveiled a new app which gives the user instant access to detailed product information, to support quick and informed maintenance of its heating and cooling solutions. The datanavi app, powered by Panasonic’s innovative Light ID technology, delivers essential product information directly to the smart device of the product owner or maintenance professional, allowing them to quickly and easily complete commissioning and maintenance tasks. The datanavi app works by recognising a product’s unique Light ID code, which is transmitted by the LED light source in the product remote controller. App users receive the ID code by holding a smart phone up to the LED light source on the remote, which will then transmit invisible high-speed light flashes or Light ID codes. After receiving the ID, the app will connect to the Cloud to acquire the product’s associated information, instantly displaying it on the device’s screen. For this to work, a new remote controller (CZ-RTC5B) with light ID technology can be used with selected Panasonic heating and cooling products. Panasonic’s datanavi provides users with valuable insights from information stored in the cloud database – for example manuals, installation and maintenance details or energy consumption reports to highlight ways to save and increase efficiency. The app can also notify users when maintenance is required. When the remote controller shows an error code, the user can get a detailed description of the error by scanning with their smartphone. As a result, end users can access professional support quickly and connect to product information instantly for a secure, fast and intuitive service. The app is beneficial for maintenance professionals as it allows them to track product history, access specific manufacturer product information and servicing requirements. Installers that use datanavi can also access user manuals and technical data, anytime, anywhere, giving them the information required at their fingertips and saving valuable time. Available on both iOS and Android, the datanavi app is easy to use, just register, log in and follow the simple instructions to get started. The datanavi service is available in the UK in May 2018.
