BRUFMA gets a new name

external target audience, which is not necessarily steeped in technical or industry language.

BRUFMA (the British Rigid Urethane Foam Manufacturers Association) has unveiled its new name – Insulation Manufacturers Association. A response to create clarity within the marketplace, the new name reflects the critical role the organisation plays in representing a key component in the built environment.

“Events of this year certainly brought this need into sharp focus, as many commentators and other interested parties were unable to immediately identify which trade association spoke for which part of the industry. We also wanted to be sure that as an Association we are solely responsible for and have ownership of the messages coming from this sector. With a name that enables everyone to understand exactly who we are and what we do, it gives the recognition that we spe ak for the largest part of the insulation market. We are setting out to develop and expand our policy, communications and public affairs activity, to support the Association’s technical and scientific work.

BRUFMA has announced a change of its name to Insulation Manufacturers Association with immediate effect. The new name reflects the position that PIR and PUR insulation manufacturers hold in providing the largest share of insulation products used in the UK market. With a growing need for ever greater energy performance and thermal efficiency across all buildings, this share of the market is expected to keep on growing and therefore the Trade Association has a responsibility to ensure it is the principal point of contact for all audiences relevant to this sector with a name that reflects this responsibility. Simon Storer, chief executive of IMA said; “BRUFMA as a name has served the industry extremely well over the years, especially on technical and industry matters and this of course, will not change. “However, the membership agreed that the Association now needed to build on this well-established foundation, move away from predominantly inward facing activity and extend its reach and influence to a wider and more diverse developer-update.co.uk

“At IMA we are very excited as we start a new chapter in the Association’s life, of representing our members, including all the manufacturers of PIR and PUR in the UK and Ireland, as well as all those across the supply chain including chemical and ancillary suppliers. “There is a very important job to be done with regards to ensuring buildings in the UK meet their design specification. We have a large part to play in this and changing our name to Insulation Manufacturers Association is one step in fulfilling this longer-term objective.” www.insulationmanufacturers.org.uk

Industry News 05

No need to feel blue with new roof guidance Technical guidance for the construction and design of blue roofs has been released by the National Federation of Roofing Contractors. The information was put together by the NFRC Joint Flat Roofing Technical Committee whose members included membrane and system manufacturers, insulation producers, standards and certification bodies, drainage consultants and representatives from flat roofing trade associations. Kevin Taylor, head of technical services at the National Federation of Roofing Contractors, said: “No British or European standard covers this type of application so we were tasked with producing these notes to support the design of technically correct Blue Roof construction. “We hope that this – like Green Roof Code of Practice (GRO) has done for green roofing – will provide comprehensive information and guidance for specifiers, designers and installers of blue roofs.” The guidance includes sections on drainage, roof deck construction, falls, waterproofing, outlets, overflows, components and finishes. A Blue Roof is a flat roof designed to allow controlled attenuation of rain fall during heavy and storm events as part of a Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) good practise policy, replicating the natural environment or improving the as built environment. It treats and releases the water at a managed and controlled rate directly into the sewers waterways and river systems. Kevin added: “At the NFRC we help our members plan ahead and see both green and blue roof systems as providing sustainable roof drainage solutions for our sector.” www.nfrc.co.uk

Great Portland Estates plans work on £233m trio of schemes Great Portland Estates could start main construction work on three sites next year worth £233m in building contracts.

The developer confirmed its plans in a trading update to the city this morning. The trio of sites are all based around the new Crossrail link which the firm said will give amajor boost to the London property market. Great Portland estates said: “We have added to our nearterm development pipeline which now comprises three schemes (414,000 sq ft), all with potential project starts over the next nine months.”

The three sites are: Cityside House E1 – Strip out and demolition works have started with plans to upgrade and extend the existing offices alongside new build residential and a hotel Oxford House W1 – Plans for a major new build scheme on the site have been submitted comprising 78,100 sq ft of offices and 38,400 sq ft of retail. Hanover Square W1 – Enabling works are underway for the largest over-station Crossrail scheme and main works on the New Bond Street building could start in the first half of 2018. Great Portland Estates moved to quell fears of a slowdown in the London property market. Chief Executive Toby Courtauld said: “In spite of the macro-economic and political uncertainties, tenant interest remains healthy across our portfolio. Moreover, activity and pricing in central London’s commercial property market remains robust for prime assets, offering potential opportunities for us to crystallise further surpluses through sales in the near term. Although we can expect some weakness in market rents and secondary yields during this period of uncertainty, demographic growth and the broad spread and depth of the capital’s economic activity will help to cement its position as one of only a handful of truly global cities and Europe’s business capital, generating demand for our brand of well designed, centrally located, high quality space.” developer-update.co.uk

Construction careers more attractive according to new CITB report One in four young people (28%) have given construction careers the thumbs up by awarding the sector top marks for attractiveness, according to a new report from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).

asked to consider. Findings also laid bare some of the challenges that may hinder recruitment into construction. These include: Only 45% of advisers declared themselves confident in providing careers advice on construction.

This figure has more than doubled from 13% in 2016, and a significant rise from just 3% in 2015. Changing Perceptions: the growing appeal of a career in construction, is based on a survey of 1,000 young people, 500 parents and 800 guidance career professionals. This year’s findings show an improvement in the perception of construction careers among all of the groups surveyed. But results also show that a limited knowledge of the sector among guidance professionals persists along with a tendency to encourage lesser qualified people into the sector.

Careers guidance professionals were more likely to give construction careers advice to those with lower qualifications than graduates and those with at least 4 A-levels – a consistent trend since 2014. Two out of five (41%) school students were told by guidance professionals that a degree would be more beneficial in the long term than other qualification. Among 18-year-olds, more than half (51%) were advised that a degree offered better prospects.. Two thirds (67%) of male respondents said they would consider a construction career compared to only a third (34%) of females.

Encouraging statistics show that young people’s knowledge of the industry has increased and they have a greater awareness of the breadth of roles in the sector. They are also more likely to see a construction career as well paid and an increasing number agree that the sector offers as many jobs for women as men. To add to this, both construction and civil engineering were placed in the top 10 (seventh and eighth, respectively) from a list of 29 potential career paths which young people were

Safety concerns still feature highly for young people – 46% of young people saw this as a concern. The survey found that career guidance professionals would welcome increased engagement with the sector to help them develop their knowledge of construction. The number of guidance professionals working directly with local employers was up for the fourth year in a row rising to 53%.

BMF calls on Chancellor to support modernisation of builder’s merchants’ delivery vehicles The Builders Merchants’ Federation (BMF) has written to the Chancellor to urge him to put measures in the forthcoming budget that will support the modernisation of builder’s merchants’ delivery vehicles. The BMF, the UK trade association for businesses in the building materials’ supply chain, state in the letter that transport is the second biggest operating cost for builders merchants after wages. John Newcomb, chief executive of the BMF said: “Our members tell us that the best action the Chancellor could take to support our industry would be to provide incentives for the modernisation of delivery vehicles. “Currently merchants are limited in the types of vehicles that they can use, often needing diesel HGVs to move heavy materials like bricks and timber that use lifting gear to load/unload them. Rising costs, coupled with planned Clean Air Zones that aim to control access to cities or set entry charges, could have a hugely significant impact on merchants”. Based on a recent members survey, the BMF list five key asks of the Chancellor in their letter: resist the temptation to increase Road Fuel Duty and maintain the freeze on all fuels; protect the funds previously allocated to develop alternative fuels for HGVs; be sparing in any Vehicle Excise Duty increase HM Treasury apply linked to the Retail Prices Index; be clear to explain changes in tax

treatment of business vehicles to favour cleaner models; and, find money to fund a diesel scrappage scheme to help SMEs replace lorries, trucks and vans. John Newcomb added: “The BMF supports action towards cleaner air. Government and industry ought to work together to ensure that policy to tackle nitrogen dioxide pollution does not restrict the delivery of materials and products to where they are needed. This is why our members are calling on the Chancellor to implement measures to support them to modernise their vehicles, and ensure that we can continue delivering the vital building blocks of growth in all parts of the UK”.

Hardwired within the DNA of a business that has survived and thrived for over 50 years is customer service. To put this longevity in perspective, when The Parkside Group Limited was founded, NASA had not yet taken a giant leap for mankind and landed on the moon. The Parkside Group Limited actively seeks to supply solutions and market leading delivery, providing the market with cost efficiencies, which stand the test of time. Examples of this include, operating a 100 per cent in-stock philosophy and twice weekly delivery service, so fabricators can utilise all the cost savings of a JIT policy, and creating bespoke aluminium profiles and systems that provide fast-track, robust solutions for specification clients. In 1987 Axim Architectural Hardware joined the group and the famous TC-8800 Transom Closer stormed the door hardware market, and still today Axim is a number one branded architectural door closer for reliability and performance. Panasonic Etherea is Recognised With Prestigious Award Panasonic has once again been awarded an iF Design Award for its Etherea range, having previously been successful with this product range in 2013. The award recognises the high-quality design of Etherea and its advances in technology. The iF Design Awards are one of the most prestigious design competitions in the world. Established in 1953, the judges follow strict criteria and consider everything from environmental impact and cosmetic appearance, to functionality. The awards are only bestowed to products that demonstrate true design innovation.

Environmental Impact Panasonic has recently updated its Etherea range to feature units that use the environmentally friendly R32 refrigerant. R32 is a single component refrigerant which means it is easy to recycle, and it also has a much lower impact on global warming, reducing the effect by 67%. By utilising this refrigerant in its new products, Panasonic is providing higher efficiencies and increased savings. The Etherea range offers six different capacities, ranging from 2.0kW up to 7.1kW. These new units achieve an A+++ efficiency rating in both heating and cooling modes.

Cosmetic Appearance The Etherea range has been designed to suit the interior of any home or commerical property. The sleek design of the units means they are not only unobstrusive, but also developer-update.co.uk

more compact than ever before. With this clean, fresh, matte white or silver design, the Etherea range leads the market in its appearance, ensuring that wherever the units are installed they won’t impact on the look and feel of the interior aesthetic.

Functionality The range is available with Panasonic ECONAVI and nanoe™ technology. The nanoe system features electrostatically atomised water nanoparticles to enable air purification. Its benefits range from minimising airborne viruses and bacteria, reducing residual pesticides and suppressing mould and allergens to hydrating the hair and skin. The intelligent ECONAVI sensor technology reduces energy consumption by adjusting the power of the air conditioning unit to suit the conditions of each room. Through its advanced sensor technology, ECONAVI can make energy savings of up to 38% over traditional systems.

13 The leading render and external wall insulation supplier took home more awards than any other entrant at the national awards ceremony. Winning categories included Project of the Year, New Build and High Rise Refurbishment. Its work on Langley Academy Primary School in Berkshire, in conjunction with sub contractor Build-Therm, picked up both the coveted Project of the Year and New Build awards. SPSenvirowall supplied high performance external wall insulation and renders to the project. INCA recognised the project’s success in minimising disruption to staff and pupils and delivering great thermal performance and design. SPSenvirowall and EWI installer Rateavon also scooped the High Rise Refurbishment award in recognition of the work carried out on Bristol-based high rise buildings Sedgewick House and Barwick House. The council-owned buildings used SPSenvirowall’s Wall System 2 to improve thermal insulation and its innovative flexible brick slips to create a leafy tree mural on the side of the buildings to improve their appearance. The project resulted in reduced heating bills for the buildings’ residents, reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions, and extended lifespan of the building. Paul Winwood, Managing Director of SPSenvirowall, said: “Our teams worked hard to deliver these projects with the right specification products to complete the highest quality builds and refurbishments to achieve their individual objectives so we are proud to be collecting a hat trick of awards from INCA this year.” INCA Executive Chairman Mitchell Gee said: “We must not lose sight of the energy inefficiencies in our housing stock and continue to strive to work towards warmer, more efficient homes. We provide products that are not only beneficial for society, but are also aspirational for the individual home owner. This has been clearly demonstrated through this year’s’ brilliant INCA Award winners.” INCA is the recognised trade association for the EWI industry, representing the major system designers, a nationwide network of specialist installers and the key component suppliers. SPSenvirowall sells in excess of 1 million square metres of external wall insulation per year and has branches in South Wales, West Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Essex and West Lothian, Scotland. The company offers a range of environmentally-friendly external wall insulations and rendering solutions, as well as expert advice, guidance and training to contractors and architects. Brio Brio Puts Puts a a Brio architectural hardware made an adventurous curved door project a reality for an innovative wedding venue in north Devon. Tunnels Beaches is a network of hand carved tunnels leading to sheltered beaches and a tidal Victorian bathing pool at Ilfracombe, the location of a breath-taking beach front wedding venue operated by Devon Beach Weddings. The bespoke building curving out of the rock means there are no concerns about the UK weather and whatever turn it takes it is all visible through curved bi-folding glazed doors – whether opened or closed. The owner had the idea to refurbish and at the same time to extend the upper story of the curved building by 2 metres, installing curved bi-folding glazed doors and thereby increasing capacity from 130 guests to 160. With a full house for weddings in 2017, (120+ weddings booked), over 100 weddings already booked for 2018 and prime dates in 2019 booking fast, the extension was a must.

developer-update.co.uk

Awlwood Joinery already had a good relationship with the owners Jamie and Zoe McLintock having worked with them at the Tunnels Beaches Bath House – an old Victorian bath house – which was turned in to wedding accommodation for the venues guests, so when the scheme was mooted to install curving bi-folding doors the McLintock’s turned to David Wray at Awlwood Joinery. “It wasn’t anything we had done before but we are skilled guys and the concept is not beyond the reach of man – after all we can send men to the moon – so we undertook the commission. The architect, RGP of Barnstaple, came up with a scheme and we did as they instructed – but with fewer doors (two sets, opening out). The design included wood cladding and lots of steel. “We opted for the Brio Weatherfold 4s system after talking to Bob Harrison at Hebden & Holding architectural ironmonger and the Brio

15

Curve Curve in in it it team which takes panels up to 1 metre wide. The decision was led by the architect’ plans and the constraints of the timber as you cannot have huge pieces of curved timber so we had to make up the doors from smaller pieces that would eventually be bolted together on site. The actual frame was put together by the owner’s site carpenters.” David Wray says: “I am very pleased with the results especially with Brio’s new dual point locking mechanism. Most bi-folding doors are locked top and bottom which means reaching up and bending down to operate. The new Brio system is a finger locking mechanism. I am so impressed with it I am using it on all jobs. It may be more expensive but it is well worth the investment for the huge improvement and simplified operation and it looks so much better. Brio’s 286 Dual Point Lock system launched last year has been joined by Brio’s 288 Lever Furniture to give joiners a deluxe option to offer their customers who now, more than ever, are looking for aesthetics as well as practicality. Brio’s 286 Dual Point Lock is suitable for Brio’s tough exterior folding system Weatherfold 4s with timber or aluminium panels and for single hinge panels, such as French doors, up to 3.5 metres high, offering an alternative to the standard flushbolts. It is both ultra secure and aesthetically pleasing.

Rather than having the standard flushbolt at the top and the bottom of the door system on the inside of the property the end user can now choose a more sophisticated finish with the 288 lever handle readily accessible in the central part of the door so there is no reaching up or bending down to operate bolts. “I am also impressed with Brio R&D – they are always coming up with new ideas and fixes. Best on the market. The solutions are effective and the Brio representatives are helpful and thoughtful – that’s a one-off!” According to David Newton, General Manager UK at Brio, the demand for bi-folding and sliding exterior and interior doors is set to continue apace, with a variety of aesthetic demands from delicate ‘floating’ glass systems to commercial style projects such as this example in North Devon. “What this means in practice is that Brio, with its range of product and flexible attitude, will continue to keep pace with the architect’s need for innovative product that can transform anything they design on paper into reality,” he says. Name: Michael Anaxagorou Job title: Sales Director How long you’ve been at Axter: 9.5 years Best thing about working for Axter: I really enjoy working within the Roofing sector – it’s a challenging but forward thinking part of the construction industry that ultimately goes onto provide an essential part of any building, keeping the structure and all its occupants safe and protected. This shared philosophy is why I started my journey here, and perhaps the fundamental reason why I am still here. Favourite Axter project: Fulham Wharf development in London. This prestigious £100m joint venture project between Barratt London and Sainsbury’s really tested my knowledge! It was a very challenging project from the outset with lots of upfront detail design input (over 50 bespoke waterproofing details), a tight programme, lots of different roof areas (+10,000/m2), build ups and a variety of complex interface details to overcome. Wholly rewarding to be able to say that you helped design and waterproof that structure.

MAKE OUR BUSINESS Name: Phil Saunders

Job title: Senior Technical Manager How long you’ve been at Axter: 8 years Best thing about working for Axter: Axter has a genuine family feel about it, with all members of staff contributing toward the overall success of the business. Everyone that works here is passionate about the end goal, and that is keeping people and buildings protected from the elements. Favourite Axter project: Tough one – there are lots. But the one that springs to mind is Electricity House in Bristol, due to the historic nature of the building and the great end result. We provided our Ecolfex single ply system in conjunction with our thin film PV panels and tapered insulation; protecting the building from the wind, rain and cold, and also providing electricity to the occupants. Best moment of 2017: Has to be having my first child with my wife… who also works for Axter!

Name: Ian Thompson Job title: Operations manager QA Division How long you’ve been at Axter: 4 years Best thing about working for Axter: Being able to share my knowledge and experience in the roofing industry to my colleagues and working as part of a close-knit team, working well together but also being able to have a laugh. Favourite Axter project: I’ll never be able to choose my favourite project, but I can definitely tell you what my favourite system is! Wilotekt-Plus Second Generation Hot Melt Waterproofing system; it’s easy to install and gives a unique quality finish using traditional and new installation techniques. This ensures a robust roofing/podium system, enabling multi-use finishes. Best moment of 2017: Steering new colleagues within the QA team to work to the best of their ability, ensuring Axter’s quality on site, and watching them gain in confidence when running skills workshops within our systems.

Name: Phillip Wilcox-Moore Job title: Managing Director How long you’ve been at Axter: 17 years Best thing about working for Axter: It’s all about the team, every single last one of them, both here in the UK and all other operating territories across the globe. We pride ourselves on the recruitment and retention of people with sharp mind and integrity and these are essential Axter traits. This combined with our culture of enthusiasm, innovation and technical and commercial discipline make Axter a truly unique and exciting place to work. Favourite Axter project: That is a very hard question to answer, but if pushed to decide I would choose Victory Pier in Gillingham for The Berkeley Group. It is a complex urban regeneration scheme that has been running for over 10 years. In that time, we have seen the site evolve, communities built, homes developed and quality of life return to a post-industrial area of neglect. This project also stands out as we have been able to innovate and implement new waterproofing systems such as our BBA approved Force Dalle system. This new system range has delivered a project on time and below budget for the developer with no compromise to quality or performance. EVOKING THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF FIBRE CEMENT Fibre cement mineral composite materials combine outstanding physical and aesthetic properties. For more than a century, the combination of mineral materials, water, air and heat has been transforming the exteriors of buildings around the world.

Project: Ashton-under-Lyne sixth form college Material: Equitone [tectiva] Architect: GA Studio

Due to the nature and range of the materials, fibre cement suits both modern and traditional schemes - from private commercial properties, to public centre facilities – and is the ideal choice for both new builds and refurbishments.

Architect’s choice EQUITONE is a through-coloured facade material designed by and for architects. The material’s versatility provides architects with the ability to bring inspirational designs to life.

Constructing beauty EQUITONE materials are created in large, flat panels, which can be cut and fabricated into a variety of shapes and sizes, enabling an architect to add intricate detail to the facade and create striking patterns in the exterior design. EQUITONE’s fibre cement materials are available in a range of through colours, offering an extensive palette of subtle and inspiring shades in a variety of textures and finishes. developer-update.co.uk

Look and feel Although the overall look is important, the texture can make a big difference to the finish of a building too. EQUITONE materials are available in a range of finishes such as EQUITONE [linea], which is a great tool for architects who want to play with texture, light and shadow. Its unique 3D shape with routed lines gives a striking final effect, particularly when cut into unusual shapes. EQUITONE’s most recent addition to the range, EQUITONE [materia], accentuates the beauty of fibre cement. The material encompasses the characteristics of cement whereas the fibres render its surface textured yet velvety. The ever-changing atmosphere gives the material natural subtle shade variations.

Top Companies of the Year 2017 31 Durability Long lifespan is a key factor when specifying cladding materials – fibre cement has a 50 year minimum life expectancy. It also requires low maintenance, and additional finishes available on select materials, such as anti-graffiti coating helps prevent weathering in areas of heavy footfall or areas where the building has to withstand harsh elements.

Flexibility in fixings Depending on an architect’s vision, EQUITONE can be fitted using secret fix when a smooth surface is required, or using a range of face fix systems to achieve the desired aesthetic. Commenting on the use of EQUITONE [tectiva] for Rushcliffe Arena, Ajay Chauhan, architect at CPMG said: “We’re really pleased with the overall finish of the project. EQUITONE [tectiva] was the ideal choice– it gave the aesthetic appearance we hoped for, was within budget and is fantastic quality.” For more information about EQUITONE, visit www.equitone.co.uk.

AT A SENSIBLE PRICE Polyx®-Oil from Osmo UK is a premium wood finish guaranteed to keep wooden surfaces in top condition. Ideal for solid engineered or laminate wood floors, it is a high quality, water-repellent and tread-resistant wood finish based on natural ingredients. Available in a matt, clear and satin-matt finishes, the Polyx®-Oil range offers the highest coverage of any oil on the market - a 2.5 litre can cover approximately 30m² with two coats. Polyx®-Oil is also extremely easy to apply. Simply brush on to the wood surface to achieve deep, longlasting penetration. Another key benefit of this wax-oil is that Polyx®-Oil has a reduced solvent content. Therefore it is virtually odorless, making Polyx®-Oil a much healthier (and also more pleasant) wood care product to use. And for anyone suffering from asthma or other breathing problems, an odourless wax-oil is much preferred that conventional, solvent-based oil or wax finishes. It also contains no biocides or preservatives.

Ideal Wood Treatment Offering all the professional features of a traditional oil-based finish, Polyx®-Oil combines the smooth surface of conventional lacquers, and the ease of application of a water-based finish, while managing to eliminate the inherent disadvantages of these other types of finish. Unlike ordinary oil finish products which form a film on the wood, Polyx®-Oil’s natural components penetrate deeply into the wood to create a micro-porous finish. This allows the wood to breathe, moisture to evaporate and ensures a flawless finish both upon application and for many years to come. After treatment the wood is strengthened from within and retains its elasticity. It becomes water repellent, stain resistant and more hard-wearing, because it meets the wood’s natural demands and does not crack, flake, peel or blister.

As well as the Polyx®-Oil Original products, Osmo offers a number of other finishes in this range.

Polyx®-Oil Tints Osmo Polyx®-Oil Tints brings a touch of elegance and glamour to any room. The range of protective wood finishes includes gold and silver tones which achieve a glitter finish, especially when the sun catches it. Other colours include white, honey, amber, terra, graphite and black.

Polyx®-Oil Raw Polyx®-Oil Raw is lightly tinted protective finish that provides an original, untreated appearance for wooden floors. This finish is designed to retain this appearance by using a small amount of white pigments to neutralise the permanent ‘wet-look’ that develops after application of a clear finish.

Polyx®-Oil Rapid As the name suggests, Polyx®-Oil Rapid provides a superior finish in extra quick time. In fact, the short drying time allows two coats to be applied in just one day – and there is no need to use a primer. And the wear resistance of treated floors even exceeds that of conventional parquet seals and varnishes.

Polyx®-Oil Anti-Slip Polyx®-Oil Anti-Slip increases the slip resistance of frequently maintained flooring areas. The surface retains its natural appearance while the fine structure particles in the finish prevent it from becoming slippery.

Polyx®-Oil 2K Polyx®-Oil 2K Pure is a two-part hardwax oil that has been designed for professional use where surfaces are subjected to high traffic. As well as providing more robust protection, the two component system includes a hardener which rapidly reduces the drying and curing times; a major advantage for commercial use such as retail environments. Available direct or from approved stockists nationwide, Polyx®-Oil meets all relevant environmental and performance standards. For stockists and more information, call Osmo UK on 01296 481220 or visit www.osmouk.com

Power Grab n Bond The strongest Construction Adhesive on the Market. Case study. Victoria Square Belfast. The creators of CT1 The Snag List Eliminator have developed the best heavy duty adhesive available – Power Grab ‘n’ Bond. This amazing product is truly ahead of its time with a “have to see to believe” reaction to its formidable instant grab, even on vertical surfaces. This heavy duty adhesive, which is based on the CT1 formulation has replace mechanical fixings such as ties and anchor bolts. Power Grab ‘n’ Bond is capable of bonding materials with weights up to 25kg on vertical surfaces with immediate grab and adhesion and with no sliding, eliminating the conventional method of attaching supports.

The applications for this incredible heavy-duty adhesive are endless and the labour saving time is considerable. Power Grab ‘n’ Bond in the essence of a heavyduty adhesive will successfully bond metal, wood, stone, glass, fibreglass and most plastics. These materials can also be bonded in any combination. There are not many adhesives on the market that can really hold the description of a heavy-duty adhesive. The purpose requires an ultra-strong formulation that is able to adhere to even the most difficult of materials in a variety of applications. Of course, the phrase “heavy duty” will mean different things depending on your individual interpretation of a heavy-duty glue. The question then arises, what fulfils the criteria of heavy duty adhesive? There really are only two glue types that will perform as a strong bond and proclaim to be a heavy-duty adhesive. These are the two component epoxies and the polyurethanes. Epoxies, even though they will create a stronger bond than Cyanoacrylate, (and can achieve bond strengths of up to 170N/CM²), they have many

developer-update.co.uk

disadvantages that would not fulfil the criteria as a heavy duty glue. The two components have to be mixed in exactly the right proportions otherwise the adhesive will not cure. A heavyduty adhesive should retain flexibility, which both glue type’s lack. Aspects governing the necessity of a heavy duty adhesive are; tensile force on the materials to be bonded, excess vibration and sheer and peel strain. When these elements far exceed the norm where a P.V.A or Cyanoacrylate will not suffice, then a heavy-duty adhesive is required. The epoxies and polyurethanes will fulfil the above demands but only in limited circumstances. For example, these types of glues will not bond various materials together and are incredibly slow to cure, (48 hours in some applications). These are all references to horizontal bonding but the real challenge is when the adhesives are faces with a vertical bonding application involving some serious heavy duty. The proclaimed heavy-duty glues or adhesives available cannot cope with when it comes to vertical bonding is the fact that the materials are often

too heavy (weighs over 8/9 kg). In these circumstances, heavy duty glues have to be supported and clamped for at least 24 hours. So that’s the science and technical aspects explained and CTEC want to explain in detail to the reader, why the sister product of CT1 has also now be claimed as the best heavy-duty adhesive for vertical and horizontal bonding on the market. This has been used on many iconic and well-known buildings and places of interest. “Power Grab & Bond was used at the Victoria Square shopping centre Belfast, with a tight schedule off only 3 days to install all the staircases, this was only achievable by using Power Grab& Bond saving us time allowing instant adhesion of the treads without any worry of slippage”. Said Stephen McConnell from S McConnell & Son. There are many more instances and validation of this product. Please go to www.ct1ltd.com to read about more case studies.

An Introduction to the Bathroom Switch It is all very well installing subtle mood lighting into a new bathroom but how are you going to control it safely within the bathroom? Yes there are pull-cords aplenty, even dimmable ones, but when you are spending good money creating your bathroom heaven, a load of pieces of string hanging from the ceiling somehow detracts from the overall design. Queue The Bathroom Switch. Wired to small Sensor Pads, which can be placed behind most materials such as Ceramic or Stone Tiles, Wood, Plastic, Glass, and even Metals, users can create switches or dimmers in virtually any shape and situation. Tiles covering Sensor Pads are adhered with silicone allowing access should it be necessary. In Bathrooms, these Sensor Pads can even be placed behind tiles reachable from the bath or shower (zones 1&2) and thus allow safe switching and dimming. These Bathroom Switch controllers can be activated from up to 12 low voltage (5vdc) Sensor Pads, so for example a Dimmer Controller can be operated from a Sensor Pad by the door and then the lights dimmed by touching a tile whilst in the bath.

developer-update.co.uk

Most types of lighting can be operated by the Bathroom Switch; this includes incandescent bulbs, halogens (mains and low voltage), LEDs and low energy bulbs. The dimmer controller will work with most leading and trailing edge dimming LEDs and because of the method of output wiring, it is even possible to dim lights as well as switch a fan on and off using the same Dimmer Controller. The Bathroom Switch will also switch other devices (to a maximum loading of 500Watts) such as mirror demisters etc.. If a greater load is present, the Bathroom Switch will switch a slave relay or contactor. Bathroom Switch controllers are usually sited outside bathrooms, they should be installed either in the ceiling/loft space or elsewhere outside any zoned area. Sensor Pads are connected to controllers using thin cable such as “CAT5” or “CAT6”. Operating the Bathroom Switch is simple: Touch your chosen faceplate (tile etc.) and the lights will turn on. Touch again to switch off. The Dimmer variant operation is also easy; touch your chosen faceplate and the lights will turn on at low level, keep touching and the lights will begin to ramp up to full brightness, remove the hand and the lights will stay at the intensity reached. To switch off, touch

Top Companies of the Year 2017 39

briefly and the lights will slowly dim back down and switch off. If required, a further touch at this stage will again latch to the intensity reached and the lights can then be ramped up again. In the timer variant, the delay is set within the controller and the lights will remain on and then switch off once the set time is reached Applications for the Bathroom Switch include (obviously) bathrooms and wet rooms, but they can of course be used elsewhere; Bathroom Switches have been used in various situations including in domestic situations such as where switches are required to be non obtrusive i.e. mounted behind door architraves etc, and in kitchens etc. Commercial applications include vandal proof switching, commercial kitchens, swimming pools and stairwells where wiring for multipoint switching becomes easy with just 2 wires connecting all Sensor Pads to one controller. With mood lighting becoming a desirable option within bathrooms the Bathroom Switch provides an elegant alternative to pull-cord operation.

Concierge System

Integrates Legacy Systems To A new Concierge and Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) solution from Intergrated Security Manufacturing (ISM) is protecting two tower blocks in Haringey, enabling authorised council employees to control door access and manage fire and security systems from anywhere within the council’s estate.

From ISM

Control Door Entry, CCTV And More Newbury House, Finsbury House, John Keats House and Thomas Hardy House in Wood Green, London, already feature four of ISM’s state-of-the-art Ultimate door entry systems as well as another two, third-party technology systems (Elizabeth Blackwell and George Lansbury) from Entrotec, utilising its Apex Dual path speech technology. Thanks to the Genesys PSIM from ISM, multiple technologies can be controlled, regardless of the manufacturer, providing enhanced security to residents in 510 flats across the six towers. This delivers greater flexibility and control, eliminates the potential disruption caused by installing new equipment, and protects the council’s legacy investment. It also means that further buildings with existing ISM or Entrotec systems can be added as required with only minimal additional investment. Genesys allows the integration not just of door entry systems, but also multiple systems from multiple manufacturers – all from one holistic integrated security system. Every electronic security or fire safety device from CCTV and Intruder Alarms to Electronic Locking and Public Address can be monitored and controlled from a single platform. Most importantly, it features Migrating 3+ technology, a patented automatic failover technology that adds higher levels of automatic configurable redundancy and power. Control is effectively distributed across multiple workstations. Len Fevrier at Homes for Haringey has been impressed with the system and how it has performed so far: “We have used the ISM Ultimate door entry products and its Genesys 2 control room software platform extensively in the Borough over many years and have enjoyed excellent product reliability and technical support. “To improve our efficiency and give faster responses to our residents we needed to provide concierge services to all our estates,” he says. “The development of the Entrotec integration into the Genesys platform, allowed Haringey to combine technology, including CCTV and fire, without going to the expense of replacing legacy door entry equipment unnecessarily. This delivers a muchneeded saving during these challenging economic times for local councils, and we plan to roll this system out across the

rest of the Broadwater Farm Estate and potentially other sites in the borough.” Managing Director of ISM, Stephen Smith, says this project is a perfect example of the flexibility of Genesys and its door entry system range: “Genesys is a ‘true’ PSIM system built around intuitive software that combines a range of industry leading features and benefits including an enhanced graphical user experience and 3-D modeling and a comprehensive event management database. Events and alarms from any integrated security application are presented to the operator clearly as and when they happen.” The PSIM software operates as a standalone platform over LAN or WAN networks for remote and local sites with workstations that can be transferred to any operating security control room on the network. This offers the end user flexibility when closing down sites or buildings for off-peak or out of normal working hours or in the unlikely event of any system failures. Ultimate is a fully addressable digital telephone entry system that is robust in design and easy to install. Unlike other door entry systems on the market it has multi speech paths that allow numerous conversations to be had at one time Such was the complexity of the project, that from initial design of the system to completing the installation took around two years to complete. Fire alarms, access control and CCTV can all now be controlled from one computer from any of the Council’s network.

44 Bathrooms & Washrooms Most consumers will only buy a radiator or towel warmer one to three times in a lifetime and therefore now consider it a luxury purchase for the home. Becoming more comfortable to explore the advantages of bespoke heating design, models which are luxurious and non-specific to a certain room are performing best right now. Offering endless styles and combinations to heat the home, premium design radiators and towel warmers are now available with integral fold-away storage rails, practical mirrors and remote control function to ensure the height of convenience and utility. The introduction of atypical materials and finishes has also become the latest look in interior fashion, compelling the need for more unexpected, advantageous heating design at the higher end of the market. Helping to create a minimalist aesthetic, metallic finishes are elevating contemporary heating designs for the better, welcoming new finishes like brushed and bright nickel or antique copper or brass as a point of difference.

Better by Design

This desire has also led to developments in texture, allowing homeowners the opportunity to move away from the standard smooth, highly polished chrome aesthetic. The market now offers a choice of matt finishes and tarnished effects to choose from, and for the height of contrast, homeowners can combine this style of rail finish with an integrated flat panel radiator in granite or coloured glass. This is a great way to give your customers a sense of personal style, as well as move away from the standard white finish to create a heating solution suited to any dĂŠcor, interior or individual. By taking a more advisory role with your client, you can focus on design creativity and service as this will help achieve a positive outcome for all. For instance, selecting the right finish and material is just as important as style; you need to make sure the model chosen co-ordinates with the fixtures and fittings already in place and plays to the modern homeowner that yearns for high attention to detail. DuPont Teijin Films Introduces Flame Retardant Polyester Film Melinex® FR220 PET Film UL Certified as VTM-0 HOPEWELL, Va., Nov 6, 2017 – A new class of flame retardant PET polyester films from DuPont Teijin Films promises to help designers in the industrial, transportation, construction, electronics and label industries provide improved safety at low cost. The halogen-free, clear Melinex® FR2XX series of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films combines the inherent polyester film properties with the VTM-0 flame rating certified by UL’s UL 94 flame classification testing. “Traditional PET polyester films are well-known for their performance and reliability characteristics, and this new film type has combined those properties with the highly desired VTM-0 certification,” said Scott Gordon, business development manager, DuPont Teijin Films. “We have worked closely with key customers to develop a clear flame retardant film that meets the needs of several industry segments.” Recent reports have predicted growth rates over 7 percent per year in flame retardant polymer usage, driven by more stringent fire safety requirements in the construction, automotive and other industries. Some commercial polymer film types offer inherent flame retardance, but often at a price point of up to 30 times higher than PET films. Meanwhile, most PET polyester films are known for their physical durability, chemical resistance and low water absorption, but with typical flame classification ratings at only the VTM-2 level. Consequently, PET

developer-update.co.uk

polyester films have been used in a limited range of applications, or in some cases the PET polyester film’s flame retardance was achieved through the use of expensive specialty adhesives, or through halogen containing film additives which are no longer permitted in many industries. The Melinex® FR220 film is the first clear halogen-free VTM-0 PET polyester film from DuPont Teijin Films. Typical applications include laminate structures for construction and transportation, battery labels, insulating materials for wire and cable, electronic office products, lighting and flexible printed circuitry.

Small yet Powerful - Panasonic Introduces Its Most Compact and Efficient Mini ECOi VRF System • Compact unit, less than 1m high • Best EER (max 4.50) and COP (max 5.19) in the industry* • Reach 50m piping length with pre-charged refrigerant Panasonic has redesigned its Mini VRF heating and cooling units to produce the most compact, yet efficient Mini ECOi series ever – available from November 2017. The new Mini ECOi VRF models, designed for residential and light commercial applications, deliver a powerful performance for properties with limited outdoor space and boasts significant energy savings, easy installation and high efficiency. The new Mini ECOi Series, which includes 4HP, 5HP and 6HP models, is the ideal solution for delivering highly efficient VRF technology to buildings with restricted external space, such as apartment blocks with very small balconies. The compact size of the outdoor unit, which is under a metre high, allows it to be placed on a small balcony or rooftop without impacting the visual aesthetic of the building from the street. In addition to its small size, the Mini ECOi series offers the most energy efficient mini VRF solution on the market. Thanks to innovative new technology the range has the best EER and COP rating in the industry, with single fan 4HP units achieving a maximum EER of 4.50 and a maximum COP of 5.19. The technology that delivers this performance includes the new Panasonic Twin Rotary Compressor with wider inverter control for higher efficiency and improved partial load control. For maximum performance the new models also include a bigger fan motor compared to previous ranges, plus a larger fan width of 540mm in diameter and a new fan design to provide a much lower air flow and electrical consumption rate. The new fan technology is capable of delivering a high external static pressure of 35Pa. Moreover, the new bluefin heat exchanger pattern makes the Mini ECOi more effective in extreme conditions by offering a higher outdoor heat exchange. In fact, the Mini ECOi series is so resourceful it is even more energy-efficient than a two fan outdoor unit+. For ease of installation, Panasonic has ensured that its new Mini ECOi series offers more flexibility when fitting within areas of limited space. The plug and play concept makes installation quicker and less complicated; while an increase in the acceptable distance between indoor and outdoor units opens up more options for installation. The new series offers up to 50m piping length between the outdoor and furthest indoor unit, without the need for an additional refrigerant charge, which covers most of the applications for this kind of system. Furthermore, the new units offer a silent mode that can maintain the

same operating capacity, which allows greater flexibility when installing the units in residential areas. Flexibility for installations is further enhanced as the Mini ECOi outdoor units can be connected to up to a maximum of 12 indoor units. Panasonic is dedicated to making sustainable lifestyle solutions that improve the lives of people and save energy. The innovative new Mini ECOi series from Panasonic is the most energy efficient and high-performance mini VRF range within the industry.
