Drawing on the updated classic designs of the Virtue collection, nearly 3000 square metres of woven axminster carpet have been fitted throughout the original Grade II Listed Mansion House and adjacent Bailbrook Court accommodation and conference facility. The coordinating design transitions in the galleried walkway and selected areas of the Bailbrook Court building, where a more contemporary design takes over in hospitality suites to coordinate with the modern approach of the interior. A singular damask element is retained with dramatic contrasting purple tones offsetting the pared-back interior. The £10m restoration at the hotel created 13 prestigious feature bedrooms, many with stunning original features, a new fine dining restaurant, three large lounges and a conservatory bar in the Mansion House.

Beaumont Hotel owners choose specialists for decorative lighting In its most recent collaboration with Corbin & King, Dernier & Hamlyn has manufactured beautiful art deco chandeliers for The Beaumont Hotel, Jeremy King and Chris Corbin’s first hotel, which will open in Mayfair this autumn. A statement, grand fitting has been produced for the hotel’s entrance. Cast in brass and finished in antique bonze, it is dressed with custom made glass rods. A smaller version has also been made at Dernier & Hamlyn’s London factory and installed in the main lobby. Throughout the main public areas, including lobbies and stairwells, Dernier & Hamlyn has also produced feature pendants that include handmade cast glass panels that feature chevrons and have been sand blasted to emulate typical art deco styling. Jeremy King says: “We select our suppliers carefully and seek out companies that share our values, which focus on honesty, integrity and continual improvement. Dernier & Hamlyn has a similar approach. Therefore when it comes to bespoke lighting for our properties we choose D&H primarily for its reputation for quality, attention to detail and its business ethics.” Dernier & Hamlyn joint managing director Jeremy Quantrill says: “We have worked on several Corbin & King projects including Brasserie Zedel and Fischer’s. Producing lighting for the Beaumont Hotel was a really interesting project and one which drew on our historical knowledge and archives from the 1930s.”

Bathrooms in the UK are becoming smaller but people still want a luxury showering facility, this is where the Lumin8 range fits in perfectly as it delivers showering solutions to meet all requirements whilst bringing a touch of luxury into the bathroom.

Terry Venables opens Spanish boutique hotel La Escondida Hotel & Restaurant is set in 500 acres of olive and almond groves in a national park in the province of Valencia. Constructed as a hunting lodge in 1881, the property features 10 bedrooms, two lodge suites, and a restaurant run by a Michelin-starred chef.

and an outdoor pool set in manicured gardens. There is also a jogging track around the property’s 500 acres; and activities on offer include horse riding, hiking and mountain biking in the National Park, bird watching, hot air ballooning, shooting, golf and fly fishing.

Owners former England and Barclona manager Terry Venables and his wife and Yvette decided to open the hotel after falling in love with the area after a visit. They have spent the last two years restoring the 500 acre estate, retaining original features such as hand painted tiles to oak wooden beams.

Venables says La Escondida is “incredibly proud” of its cuisine, prepared by a Michelin star trained chef. “We’ve eaten some exceptional food in our lives but the best is always simple cooking beautifully presented using the freshest ingredients,” he said. “Most of the herbs and vegetables are grown on our land by our gardener and the breads and pastries freshly baked in our kitchen. We plan to have a bee hives so guests have fresh honeycomb for breakfast.”

“The beauty of the area was breathtaking. We are always in search of places that are off the beaten track and La Escondida was certainly that, yet such a short distance from the coast,” said Venables. La Escondida is located 35 minutes from the beach in the community of Penaguila, in the Font Roja National Park. It features an indoor swimming heated pool, spa, two terraces,

Manchester’s Hotel Gotham to open in April 2015 The hotel, which is being developed and will be operated by Bespoke Hotels, is set in a 1928 Edwin Lutyens building and will include 60 rooms spread over seven floors, with the reception and the restaurant on the sixth floor, and a bar and members club on the seventh.

The property will also include five inner sanctum suites. In celebration of the building, the decor takes cues from the art deco period and the dramatic windows offer fascinating views across Manchester.

Robin Sheppard, chairman of Bespoke Hotels, said: “Hotel Gotham is really taking shape now. The construction team at Marshall’s and our design partners at Squid-Inc are on track to deliver an exceptional and glamorous hotel, in a beautiful historic building. We can feel the excitement bubbling.”

The Venables were advised on the project by Katy McCann of Suite DNA. McCann was formerly global head of the hotel collection at Mr & Mrs Smith.

Investment In Training Affects Hospitality Industry’s Bottom Line Investing in training is important to hospitality organizations and restaurant and lodging companies’ bottom lines, says a new report released by the Council of Hotel and Restaurant Trainers (CHART) and People Report, a TDn2K company. The report, 2014 Trends in Hospitality Training & Development Study, serves as a benchmark for training and development practices. “We’ve known for years that investing in training is a worthwhile expenditure in the hospitality industry. It helps companies reduce turnover, foster a stronger, more skilled workforce, and provide a better customer experience. Now we have yet another report that backs up this essential premise in our industry,” said Patrick Yearout, director of training for Ivar’s Restaurants and CHART president. The report highlights a number of key findings, most notably: t A seat in the C-Suite. One-quarter of training departments report directly to the CEO or president of an organization. t Go online, see results. More organizations are turning to e-learning as part of their training suite, using it for knowledge leveling, validation and testing, and compliance. More than 80 percent of limited service restaurants and 73 percent of hotel and lodging companies report offering e-learning opportunities to employees. t A little bit goes a long way. Restaurants that spend more than four hours on new hire orientation have on average 20 percent lower turnover. t Investing in people matters. Increasing an organization’s budget to train certified trainers can reduce turnover by an average of 25 percent. Founder and CEO of People Report Joni Thomas Doolin added, “The hospitality industry’s effective adoption of training programs is essential to best-in-class performance. We look forward to continuing our partnership with CHART to study the training profession and practices to help this vital sector of our economy and workforce grow and flourish.” The full report is available for download at

Phipp Street modern office space by Amin Taha Architects

A creative team from Amin Taha Architects were given a project to transform the 2,800 sq ft of commercial space comprised over a ground and two upper floors at 18 Phipp Street, into modern and stylish office spaces. After consultations with Building Control, they required a clear coating for a staircase to achieve Surface Spread of Flame Protection. Thanks to participation in one of our CPD’s, they knew that Envirograf® would have a product that would meet their criteria.

Hotelier & Hotel Design

With the help of Andy Wahts, Envirograf’s representative in London, they chose product QVFR for internal application, which is a clear fire retardant coating, available in satin finish, not requiring any top coat. Works have been carried out by Ecore Construction from London.

During Mr Waht’s visit at the property, a solution was found to provide 60 minutes fire protection to the exposed timber ceiling without the need to cover them with 2 layers of plasterboard, (by using Envirograf® HW Intumescent Coating System) which would make it more cost effective and allow Architects to achieve more desirable look. Envirograf® Intumescent Steel Coating has also been used, to ensure the construction of the building would be well supported even in the case of a fire. It can take just a few minutes for unprotected steelwork in a building to attain temperatures of around 550ºC in a fire. At this temperature, steelwork loses its loadbearing capacity and the structure is likely to collapse, giving little time for people to evacuate and even less time for the fire service to bring the fire under control.

GET SET TO CELEBRATE 25 YEARS OF NEC FURNITURE SHOWS Organisers of the all-new January Furniture Show are getting ready to celebrate 25 years of furniture shows at the NEC with a ‘Silver Jubilee’ party. 2015 marks the 25th consecutive year that a trade furniture show has been held at the NEC, Birmingham, making the event one of the most established in the industry. To mark the occasion, Laraine Janes and Theresa Raymond, directors of The January Furniture Show Ltd, who are organising the event for the first time, are hosting a Silver Jubilee drinks party at the show. They said: “We’re delighted with the level of support for the show - 99% of the space is now sold.”

Hotelier & Hotel Design

Support for the show comes from right across the furnishings industry, prompting organisers to expand the space available into a fifth hall – The Pavilion. A highlight of The Pavilion will be a specially themed café area by a top British designer.

Said Theresa Raymond: “We have a strong team that is working hard to make this show a success and to meet exhibitors’ and visitors’ requirements. The show brings buyers and exhibitors together at the perfect time for planning and ordering for the year – and 25 years of success at the NEC is evidence that this is the venue and timing the trade want for their main show. The brainchild of industry exhibition stalwarts Stephen Richards and Phil Soar, the first NEC show in 1990 created a unique platform for the furnishings sector at a location that ensured it was a truly national event. Since then the show has been organised by a number

of companies under a number of names – but has always been held at the Birmingham NEC in January. It is set to remain the biggest furniture event in the UK next year. Exhibitors include: In Hall 1 - Duresta, Parker Knoll, G-Plan Upholstery, Collins & Hayes, Alstons, Mark Webster, Wood Bros, Ercol, Willis & Gambier, Baker Furniture, Tetrad, Westbridge, Gascoigne Designs, David Gundry and Winsor. In Hall 2 - Morris Group, Buoyant Upholstery, Sherborne Upholstery, Celebrity Recliners, Seconique, Skovby, Serene Furnishings, Greenapple Designs, Breasley, Kingstown, Lifestyle Europe, Furmanac, Furnico and Lebus Upholstery. Turning The Tables On Bag Thieves HOTELS, restaurants, pubs, bars and cafes across the UK are offering their customers an ingenious solution to the problem of bag theft. Venues such as The London Bridge Hotel and Sheraton Park Tower Hotel as well as chains such as Park Plaza and Intercontinental are using the Chelsea Clip ( which can be fitted inconspicuously under tables to guard against bag snatchers. A popular bar in Manchester city centre has had no reported bag theft since customers started using the Clip. The Manchester Bierkellar, a theme bar boasting a wide range of German beers, has had a number of Chelsea Clips fitted in its dining area, which can seat more than 200 customers. The busy venue, which features 4 bar areas, regularly attracts more than 1,500 people on a Saturday night. Bags left unattended on the back of chairs or on the floor are prime targets for bag thieves but the Clip offers customers peace of mind as they relax with a drink or eat a meal with friends. The Chelsea Clip is a unique deterrent, which has a proven track record of preventing opportunist bag theft from public places. Produced by security company Selectamark, it is an injection-moulded nylon hook from which a bag, rucksack or camera case can be suspended by its own strap.

Hotelier & Hotel Design

Two hands are needed to remove an item from the Clip, making ‘handbag snatching’ virtually impossible. It can be easily fitted to tables, walls, bars, behind lavatory doors - in fact, anywhere a customer may need to secure their belongings.

Luxury department store Harrods recently placed a large order for the Chelsea Clip to deter handbag theft and is using them under tables in their dining and bar areas. The Clips are also being used to protect businesses in Fitrovia, London. The area includes an eclectic mix of hotels, pubs and restaurants including the Charlotte Street Hotel and Japanese restaurant Roka.

Suitable posters and other display material such as window and menu stickers should always be used in conjunction with The Chelsea Clip as a deterrent to thieves and as a reminder to both customers and staff that the clips are there to be used. The labels, which carry the wording ‘Secure your bag here’ can be placed around the neck of a wine bottle to advertise the clips. One London council had the labels printed in different languages so that tourists and visitors to cafes and restaurants could be alerted to the risk of bag theft but protected from it at the same time. Floor Focus

Wood is still the number one choice when it comes to flooring in the hospitality sector. Creating elegant and luxury interiors that are welcoming and feels like a home is at the forefront of designers’ minds, and fashion-led, flexible solutions play a key role in their work. Gone are the days when wood floor meant natural beech or oak – today’s choice is truly exciting with an array of textures, finishes and colours on offer. In the last couple of years, Junckers has developed and brought to market several design led floors – brushed, textured finishes highlighted with colour to enhance the natural variations and grain patterns of the timber; adding pearlised finishes to extra wide oak boards; creating a floor with a rustic, weathered look which echoes the patina of an aged floor to suit the increasingly popular industrial look and bringing out a parquet floor, the flooring trend of the moment, made from wide board planks that are pre-finished – all made in solid hardwood, remaining true to the standard of high quality product Junckers is known for.

Hotelier & Hotel Design

The choice of floor in an interior scheme can set the tone for the entire concept and increasingly, the floor is no longer considered as a ‘background’ in a scheme but is often the starting point of a design. Says Steve Maltby, Managing Director of Junckers Ltd: “We’ve definitely seen an increase in the demand for stronger, bolder looks in wooden floors. One trend that seems here to stay is parquet floors, which offers a beautifully crafted style in stunning patterns. In response to our continuous dialogue with designers and architects, we have now developed Whalebone Staves, a parquet floor which is delivered pre-finished, which means there is no need for on-site sanding and finishing – as soon as the floor has been installed, it is ready to walk on.”

Junckers’ new Whalebone Staves is a contemporary take on the classic parquet floor with a perfect, factory applied finish in UltraMatt lacquer. The extra-long, wide board staves measure 700x140mm and are available in solid, natural Oak or Black Oak. As well as a herringbone pattern, Whalebone Staves can be laid in square basket or ladder patterns. All Junckers floors are FSC and PEFC certified.

Grosvenor Wilton Combines Retro Designs And Contemporary Colour In First Retail Carpet Collection It has been a very interesting time for Grosvenor Wilton. Last year they were commissioned to produce the carpets for the sets of ITV series Downton Abbey and in May 2014 Kidderminster-based carpet manufacturer Grosvenor Wilton, one of the UK’s finest and oldest carpet manufacturers, launched its first retail range. The British-made Diversity Collection is based on classic retro designs and modern colours. It will retail from £79 per linear metre and will be sold through several channels including http://www. and via social media. Grosvenor Wilton’s new Diversity Collection transfers the company’s expertise in specialist restoration, historic and interiordesigner markets to retail carpeting. The 12 launch designs are united by the idea of ‘a fusion of heritage and fresh new design’. The new collection is inspired by the company’s huge archive of classic 1950s and 1960s carpet designs – with the addition of contemporary colours. Benjamin Grosvenor started carpet making in 1790. Since then, the business that has evolved into Grosvenor Wilton has specialised in the most discerning requirements for design and durability. Grosvenor Wilton is traditionally associated with highend bespoke carpet for residential and historic houses, film sets and museums. The Worcestershire company’s portfolio includes many high profile commissions: carpeting for Buckingham Palace’s throne room; the set of ITV’s Downton Abbey; and Stephen Spielberg’s blockbuster, Lincoln. Now, for the first time, the quality and design flair that royalty and Hollywood stars walk on is available as a retail product.

Hotelier & Hotel Design

As well as demonstrating over 200 years of carpet making expertise, the new collection is exceptionally versatile. Applications include wall-to-wall fitting, runners or being made up into edged rugs. Recommended retail prices are from £79 per linear metre. The new range will be available through http://www.

Announcing the launch, Grosvenor Wilton’s managing director, Malcolm Foley, said: “Our new Diversity Collection unlocks the huge potential of the luxury retail carpet market. With over 200 years’ expertise distilled into the new range, discerning homeowners can combine unique style with the quality and pedigree that delights the most demanding carpet buyers. Seeing and feeling is the key to understanding our fusion of heritage and fresh new design. Were he still around, I’m sure Benjamin Grosvenor would be amazed by our novel approach to carpet retailing using technology and media such as the diversity collection website.” For more information, please call Tori on 01242 220233 or visit

Andrews Chiller

Lowers Temperature at Gala Dinner As more than 150 guests arrived for the Senior Open Golf Championship Gala Dinner in the banqueting marquee in the grounds of Hensol Castle they were assured of some of the finest food in Wales, set in a stunning historical setting, in an atmosphere where the ambient temperature was precisely controlled by equipment supplied by Andrews Chillers. The organisers and main sponsor wanted to ensure that the Gala Dinner on the eve of the main event would be a joyous and wonderful occasion and act as a perfect backdrop to the tournament that lay ahead. Whilst guests enjoyed this first class dining experience, operating quietly in the background was an Andrews Chillers 50kW fluid chiller heat pump connected to four 15kW fan coil units to keep guests cool. Andrews Chillers Hire, part of the Andrews Sykes Group, is one of the leading chiller equipment hire organisations, supplying to an extremely diverse customer base from industrial manufacture, office blocks, hospitals, shopping malls, function rooms and festival venues. The call for temporary hire can be to supplement existing systems, as a replacement whilst repairs are undertaken or as a dedicated standalone system such as at supplied for this year’s Senior Open Golf Championship gala dinner.

Hotelier & Hotel Design

The marquee at Hensol Castle which measures 21m x 12m was to accommodate around 150 invited VIP guests and players.. With so many people in a relatively confined space, plus hot food and unexpected higher than normal summer temperatures they could all contribute to creating a very uncomfortable hot and humid environment. To prevent this occurring at one of the most prestigious events in Wales this year, event organisers insisted that the marquee was equipped with first-class temporary chiller hire solution to control air-temperature; this proved a wise decision as temperatures on the day soared above 30oC.

In the build up to hosting the main event engineers from specialist equipment Hire Company Andrews Chillers appraised the venue’s requirements and drew up a system configuration that could be installed quickly, would operate quietly and automatically adjust to changes in air temperature. One of the key requirements was that the overall system including pipework had to be unobtrusive and not distract from the luxury of the internal dressing of the marquee. Six days before the gala dinner Andrews Chillers delivered and installed an integrated cooling/heating system comprising a robust and extremely reliable 50kW heat pump and four 15kW fan units. The heat pump was positioned outside the marquee with pipe runs to each individual air unit sited virtually in each corner of the marquee. During installation the whole system was filled with fluid to create

a self-contained sealed pressurised installation. The Andrews 50kW heat pump circulates chilled water to each of the four fan coil units which are able to deliver air flow into the marquee as rates of up to 1200m3/h. Warm air from the hospitality marquee is drawn into the lower portion of the air handling units, circulates over the ‘cold’ coils resulting in a drop in temperature, the cooler air is then gently blown back into room from the top vents. Since temperature change will depend on air flow, air temperature and humidity the Andrews Chiller solutions had to adjust automatically to variants. As the warm air passes over the cold coils the water temperature rises, this returns to the chiller as part of the closed loop to be chilled and is then re-circulated to the air handling units. This totally closed loop chiller system supplied for the gala dinner at the Senior Open Golf Championship is typically of the equipment configurations that Andrews Specialist Hire supplies where temporary standalone heating/cooling is required. And with a network of more than 22 depots, one of the most comprehensive ranges of hire equipment and local engineers on hand to provide expert advice and guidance chiller solutions can be quickly in place.

A British Icon Reborn

With a staggering location on the world famous Royal Crescent in Bath, this quintessential English heritage hotel has been luxuriously reconsidered for the 21st Century. Listed within the Best UK Holiday Hotels and the Best UK Hotel Spas categories in October’s Condé Nast Traveller Reader’s Awards, it’s already proving a hit. The refurbishment and restoration programme was a labour of love, with every effort made to restore this

beautiful example of Georgian heritage sympathetically. Somerset-based designer Jane Clayton Interiors worked with Brian Cohen, project manager on behalf of Topland Group , to carry out work on this prestigious project. History lovers will be thrilled not only by the hotel’s Georgian architecture, but by historical references throughout. The 45 rooms and suites were individually re-designed, plasterwork ceilings restored, and period features protected. Every room has been artfully curated to give it a distinctive character, with classic antique pieces such as four-poster beds or roll top baths. All of the suites have been named after famous Bath residents, including Lord Nelson, Gainsborough, Brinsley Sheridan, Eliza Lucas and Elizabeth Linley. Encouraging guests to experience these rooms and suites in style, the hotel has launched a series of new packages. Those looking for the ultimate Bath experience can take advantage of the new midweek Suite Indulgence offer that starts from £699 includes suite accommodation, breakfast, three course dinner in The Dower House Restaurant and one half hour spa treatment per person in The Spa .

A Luxury Spa Retreat

Venue Profile

The Dolder Grand: luxury-class City Resort The Dolder Grand is the perfect environment for people who are looking for pleasure, exclusivity and relaxation: The original “Curhaus” dating from 1899 presents itself anew as the luxury- class City Resort. The hotel's elevated location, between the pulsating life of the city and a refreshingly natural green zone. Since its reopening, more than 100 illustrious artworks have graced the Zurich luxury hotel. It is probably the most sensational renovation projects ever undertaken in the Swiss hotel industry. After four years of conversion and renovation work, the city of Zurich welcomed the return of one of its landmarks in April 2008. Since this time the luxury hotel has written new chapters of history. The renowned British Wallpaper magazine, for example, awarded the Dolder Grand the title of “Best New or Renovated Hotel”, while the American website included the luxury hotel in its list of the “World’s 50 Best New Hotels”, and Condé Nast Traveler added it to its “Hot List 2009”, the list of the world’s best new hotels. In Swiss hotel ratings, the Dolder Grand ranks number one among the country’s city hotels.

Combination of the traditional and the modern

Renowned London architects Foster and Partners combined the historic Main Building of the Dolder Grand, some of which is listed, with modern architectural accoutrements. All annexes constructed after 1899 were demolished, and two modern wings – the Spa Wing and the Golf Wing – now enclose the Main Building. The Hotel makes use of geothermal energy for efficient energy consumption, with 70 probes having been sunk 150 metres into the ground. Guests value the Hotel’s elevated location between pulsating city and invigorating nature, and the magnificent view of the city of Zurich, the lake and the Alps. Over the last few years, Heiko Nieder’s surprising gourmet cuisine has caused a real sensation, and The Restaurant has been awarded 18 GaultMillau points and 2 Michelin stars. The exclusive spa area encompassing 4,000 square metres has also received a number of awards. Salvador Dalí, Henry Moore, Camille Pissarro – since the reopening, more than 100 illustrious artworks have graced the rooms of the luxury hotel in Zurich. The most striking piece is arguably Andy Warhol’s Big Retrospective Painting, spanning 11 metres, which holds pride of place above the reception.

Hillary Clinton, Leonardo DiCaprio and a Hollywood film

Since its reopening, the Dolder Grand has re-established its role as a meeting place for personalities from the worlds of politics, business and culture. Business events and spectacular balls help to invigorate the tradition-steeped establishment. Numerous VIPs have signed their names in the guest book over the last five years. Hillary Clinton mediated between Turkey and Armenia. When the hosts of the Football World Cup were announced, both winners stayed at the Dolder Grand: the delegation accompanying the Emir of Qatar and the Russian delegation, which was joined briefly by President Putin for a media conference. The December days of 2010 were in any case influenced by the presence of important personalities, with Bill Clinton, Prince William and David Cameron all attending meetings at the luxury hotel. Leonardo DiCaprio felt so comfortable during his stay that he took his time to stroll through the hotel corridors, explore the lobby and use the Spa just like every other guest. The Dolder Grand was even used as a prominent setting for a Hollywood film, namely David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”. Since as far back as 1899, the history of the Dolder Grand has been populated by a stream of VIPs including Henry Kissinger, Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein, Liz Taylor and Luciano Pavarotti. With its 176 luxurious rooms and suites, exquisite cuisine, a spa encompassing 4,000 square metres, generous banqueting and seminar facilities and a remarkable art collection, the Dolder Grand is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, Swiss Deluxe Hotels and Design Hotels. The Hotel’s elevated location between pulsating city and invigorating nature provides a magnificent view of the city of Zurich, the lake and the Alps. From 2004 to 2008, the City Resort was fully renovated and converted by the London architects Foster and Partners.
