Queensferry Hotels to heavily invest in two Scottish flagships as hotels post £6m turnover Edinburgh-based Queensferry Hotels is to invest in two of its Scottish hotels, with a bedroom expansion and new restaurant making up part of the plans. The group is to plough £1.4m into the renovation and expansion of Keavil House Hotel in Dunfermline and Bruntsfield Hotel in Edinburgh after both properties recorded a generated turnover of £6m for last year. The expansion project at Keavil House has already been completed, with the new Botanist restaurant, bar and terrace with 60 covers opening last month. The group will now build four new bedrooms at Bruntsfield Hotel, taking the number of bedrooms to 70 when the new addition opens in May. The foyer of the Bruntsfield will also be redesigned. “This investment in our estate will allow us to not only retain our current customer base, but also future-proof our properties in an increasingly crowded hospitality market,” managing director Russell Imrie said.

“We are always looking at how we can better accommodate our guests, and thanks to the Bank of Scotland’s support we’re now in an even stronger position to meet and exceed our customers’ demands.” Edinburgh-based Queensferry Hotels purchased the Bruntsfield Hotel in 1981 before acquiring Keavil House Hotel in 1988. Both are currently operated by Queensferry Hotels under the Best Western Plus brand.

Brent Council approves Aparthotel modernisation in Wembley


Council says refurbishment will help increase demand for accomodation in the area

creating 128 suite-style guest apartments, a restaurant and a leisure centre.

Brent Council has given planning permission to LHG (London Hotel Group) to modernise a “faded” Aparthotel hotel in Wembley, London.

The borough has identified a need for more visitor accommodation and LHG’s new hotel will help contribute to the overall regeneration of Wembley Central.

The 61-room property sits on the corner of Elm Road and St John’s Road. The council said modernisation of the building could provide better support for the local economy and increase demand for accommodation in the area.

Christian Desira from LHG said: “There’s an incredible energy in Wembley, a creative surge to modernise, to connect and welcome the world. We’re proud to be part of that and our proposal was developed with help from Brent Council’s planning team and from the community of residents and local businesses.

The new hotel is being designed by hotel architects Dexter Moren Associates, who previously worked with LHG on the newly-completed Best Western Plus Wembley. The group plans to increase the properties capacity by

UK hotel investment levels hit £5b The UK hotel sector last year saw investment volumes reach £5b including over £2.5b from foreign investors. The £5b figure represents an increase of 35% year on year, according to property adviser Knight Frank. This is in addition to the sector achieving strong revenue per available room (revpar) levels, robust growth in gross operating profit per available room (goppar), and an increase in occupancy rates nationwide. The success is built on strong fundamentals underpinning the sector, including a strong surge in portfolio activity and portfolio break-ups, meaning larger single assets available to the market and a strong hotel trading performance, both in London and the regions. The weakened pound has continued to draw greater than anticipated tourist numbers and invited more domestic staycation holidays, which has ensured occupancy rate growth, with the regions seeing record high occupancy rates of 77%. Macdonald Hotels & Resorts Celebrates The Staycation With The Launch Of ‘Macdonald Moments’ In 2018

Michael Ellis has been appointed minister for arts, heritage and tourism in the latest cabinet reshuffle.

The UK’s largest independent hotel group, Macdonald Hotels & Resorts has started the New Year in style with the launch of its ‘Macdonald Moments’ campaign, a marketing first for the group.

The Conservative MP for Northampton North replaces John Glen, who was only in the role for seven months. Glen, who was appointed in June 2017 following the general election, succeeded Tracey Crouch as parliamentary under-secretary at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The ‘Macdonald Moments’ initiative will feature a calendar of monthly promotions as a reward and thank you to customers. The rewards are set to celebrate the quality and diversity within the group’s portfolio of hotels.

Ellis, a former barrister, was deputy leader of the House of Commons from July 2016 until his promotion was announced on 9 January. He met with Steve Ridgway and Sally Balcombe, chairman and chief executive of VisitBritain respectively, yesterday.

Industry News Mr Gaurang Jhunjhnuwala, CEO of Naumi Hotels Australia and New Zealand shares, “Naumi Hotels is anything but a cookie-cutter hotel brand, moving away from the sterile and the impersonal by offering micro, bespoke experiences for every guest.” On arrival into the hotel and its double-height lobby, a 24-carat gold leaf textured wall greets guests as they checkin. Commissioned and made by the NY Art Department (NZ), the piece of art represents the feathered nape of the Tui bird and took 6 months to create. A total of 95 gold discs hand-painted with feathers adorn the lounge area, which has been designed with rich layering of emerald greens, jewel blues and magenta pops, mimicking the shimmering Tui tones. Beyond the reception area, the bar and restaurant form the heart of the hotel and make a similar bold design statement. A light feature reading “ruffle your tail feathers” sits above the bar, inviting guests to socialise, while oversize armchairs, textured rugs and striking chandeliers imbue a sense of the dramatic. Art plays a central role at Naumi Auckland Airport, with an impressive gallery of works embellishing the hotel from the entrance through to each and every guest room. Featured artists include Belynda Henry, an Australian-based artist and winner of the NSW Wynne prize, who has been commissioned to capture the natural landscape of Auckland with multi-sensory pieces showcased in the hotel lobby and New Zealand-based designer Judi Bagust whose whimsical signature brush strokes are reminiscent of the particular song of the tui bird and compliment the landscapes. Gaurang further adds, “The hotel is designed to create ‘sweet spots’ that are aesthetically pleasing and mentally stimulating, through the unexpected and a sense of theatre.” The team at the hotel, known as Naumi “Gurus”, have been personally styled by retailers Topshop and Zara according to their individual look and taste, rather than conforming to the standard idea of a hotel uniform. Naumi Gurus are on hand throughout a guest’s stay to ensure every preference is met. The 193 guest rooms come in four variations – Habitat, Oasis, Blush and designer themed suites, each designed in colour palettes again evoking the multi-coloured iridescent sheen of the Tui bird’s feathers. Natural earth tones, rich materials and crisp white linen combine with these tones to create a warm yet contemporary feeling. Designed to maximise space, the guest rooms offer customised 5-layer bedding, brass accents, and sultry mood lighting. Belynda Henry’s landscape-inspired designs have here been translated into colourful rugs which adorn every room, adding vibrancy and a further element of interest enabling guests to interact with the art in a tactile way. The wooden panelling detail present in all rooms is an ode to the nesting nature of the tui birds, realigned in a honey comb pattern. Rooms have a total of 10 power points that allow guests the flexibility to power their requisite gadgets, and free no bandwidth restriction fibre-optic wifi, in built bed-side USB Slots and 50” Smart LED TVs with Netflix streaming come as standard. Bathrooms feature premium SOAK superfood skincare products, and are lined with tiles in a Herringbone pattern inspired by the Tui’s feathers, using coloured grouting in fuchsia pink, aqua teal, nautical blue or cherry red, adding to the sense of play. Two further designer-inspired Suites offer a luxurious way to appreciate design, reflecting the group’s love of art and fashion (Naumi Singapore has Andy Warhol and Coco Chanel-inspired suites). The Ziggy Suite is inspired by the classic chevron and striped Missoni design, with a sixperson neon orange lit bar, pool table and outdoor dining area, Kartell Stools, Jardan Sofas, customised rugs and original vintage artwork, whilst the Dotty Suite is inspired by the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama known for her brightly coloured conceptual pieces. Privacy Door Latch Improves On Traditional Products

Many hotel guests feel much safer when they are away from home with an additional security device on their bedroom door that opens enough to see who is outside - and even examine an ID pass - but stops intruders from opening the door enough to gain access without the occupiers’ consent. Many people have also experienced other guests entering their rooms by mistake, sometimes even issued with the wrong keys at reception. The commonly used chain or swing bar designs need to be attached to both the door and the frame (and correctly aligned) and both these options can sometimes allow the door to open enough for them to be defeated. In comparison, the Pemko PDL, distributed in the UK by Relcross, has many advantages. The PDL consists of a single bracket with a strong steel flap that can be opened to completely stop the door from opening more than 56mm or closed to allow free access. It is very simple to operate even by those with limited dexterity making it practical for use in rooms adapted for disabled use as well as standard rooms.

It is only attached to the frame leaving the door untouched and pristine. There’s only one bracket to be fixed and no two parts to be aligned. This means it’s easily fitted in just minutes. Fixing to the frame gives a much stronger anchorage and does not rely on a chain or bar secured to a relatively thin and lightweight door. Additionally, it cannot be used to try and keep the door open and so reduces the opportunity for damage to the door and frame by misuse. Entering this building feels like stepping into another world where every attention to detail is met and even the smallest aspects are tended to with highest level of care and attention. With an on-site gym & outdoor terraces, this hotel really is the perfect location for a short break, as well as equipping perfectly for meetings & Weddings.

The Food

I was lucky enough to be given a room overlooking the pier during my stay. This never went a miss, you can never feel so relaxed inside watching waves crash into the sand… believe me.

Dining within “Steak on Sea Bar & Restaurant” the restaurant within the building, had a very at homely feel to it. Serving a wide range of comfort food – meets modern twist dishes, I opted for the Chicken & Leek Terrine to start and The Sirloin steak – a deliciously cooked steak, gluten free and served with triple cooked chips, roasted shallot, vine tomatoes and your choice of sauce for the main course, both of which left me both satisfied and craving more.

The room was an excellent size, with double, twin or king beds all available, as-well as suites. The room had character and came with its very own en-suite bathroom, work desk and freeview TV. I found the hotel room very clean and tidy and the views were simply stunning. Each room offers free wi-fi to their guest, so a perfect destination for people on their travels or working away from home.

Breakfast was a slightly more formal affair, Showcasing a modern outlook on classic British dishes with a commitment to quality ingredients and depth of flavour, the breakfast menu consisted of a variety of cooked and continental options with a selection of pastries and fruit juices.

Choosing the correct footwear


lips and trips are a hazard we would all like to avoid in the hospitality industry, but with such a large selection of shoes on the market, how do you decide which is best? The first thing to look out for is a shoe that has been designed specifically for the industry. Brands such as Comfort Grip and AFD are designed solely for the hospitality trade.

Non-Slip & Safety Toes Whether your hotel has a vast marble reception or the smallest tiled kitchen, non-slip shoes are an absolute must for any employee in the hospitality industry. SRC testing is the most stringent specification for safety footwear. When a product is SRC tested it is trialled under two separate conditions; ceramic tile wetted with dilute soap solution and on smooth steel with glycerol. The shoe will pass or fail the slip test. The story behind the “Made in Germany” label If you ask anyone around the world what the “Made in Germany” label represents, the common answers will be: High quality, Durability, Precision, Trust, Innovation. Whilst these are accurate representations of German made products today, this was not the intention when this was introduced, quite the opposite in fact…

Why Britain started the “Made in Germany” labelling Yes, it says Britain, and no, it’s not a mistake. Introduced in Britain 130 years ago by Merchandise Marks Act 1887, it was intended to mark foreign produce more obviously. At this time, foreign manufactures had been making their own cheaper copies, which of course were not of a good quality as the better known domestic brands. Many goods were marked with the labels of British manufacturing companies, prior to importing them into the UK. Most of these were found to be originating from Germany. Britain introduced this label/stamp/tag as a requirement for all goods imported from Germany, with the aim of warning consumers of potentially bad quality products. Other countries around the world shared the same opinion of German goods, being described as “tending to be cheap and of low quality” at the World-Expo in Philadelphia in 1876. This didn’t last long though, in the space of 10 years Germany flipped this on its head. Upset at being insulted for poor quality, the German manufacturing industries invested heavily in machinery and better trained staff, which improved quality rapidly and at a huge scale. German manufacturers recognised the opportunity, and by the time the law had been passed introducing the label and it became well-known, the perception had already changed to what we know today.

2018’s food and drink landscape to be revealed at dedicated April shows The NEC will again host Farm Shop & Deli Show and Food & Drink Expo from 16-18 April 2018. The affluent commuter town of Bearsden in the north west of Glasgow is the lucky recipient of a brand new, family-owned Italian restaurant and delicatessen, thanks to the efforts of renowned Scottish/Italian restaurateur Carlo Andreucetti and catering equipment specialists QED.


Amici di Carlo provides over-the-counter Italian cooked meats, cheeses, cakes and many other delicacies together with pizzas, salads and fresh Italian coffee to eat in or take away. As Carlo explains: ‘After being away from the restaurant business for some time, my partner and I decided to design a new outlet majoring on good quality, fresh Italian ingredients that the people of Bearsden could enjoy throughout the day.

Transformation of former bakers ‘We came across a former bakers’ retail and café premises near Bearsden Cross in the heart of the community and

set about transforming it into an authentic Italian dining experience earlier in 2017. ‘I had known Robert Campbell of QED for many years, as he is a well-regarded figure in the Scottish and UK catering industries. I was particularly impressed with the QED selection of display counters and knew that I could trust Robert and his team to deliver a project that matched our vision for Amici di Carlo. ‘The final result combines Italian warmth and hospitality with the very latest catering technology to create a unique venue that has our personality running all the way through it.
