Queensferry Hotels to heavily invest in two Scottish flagships as hotels post £6m turnover Edinburgh-based Queensferry Hotels is to invest in two of its Scottish hotels, with a bedroom expansion and new restaurant making up part of the plans. The group is to plough £1.4m into the renovation and expansion of Keavil House Hotel in Dunfermline and Bruntsfield Hotel in Edinburgh after both properties recorded a generated turnover of £6m for last year. The expansion project at Keavil House has already been completed, with the new Botanist restaurant, bar and terrace with 60 covers opening last month. The group will now build four new bedrooms at Bruntsfield Hotel, taking the number of bedrooms to 70 when the new addition opens in May. The foyer of the Bruntsfield will also be redesigned. “This investment in our estate will allow us to not only retain our current customer base, but also future-proof our properties in an increasingly crowded hospitality market,” managing director Russell Imrie said.

“We are always looking at how we can better accommodate our guests, and thanks to the Bank of Scotland’s support we’re now in an even stronger position to meet and exceed our customers’ demands.” Edinburgh-based Queensferry Hotels purchased the Bruntsfield Hotel in 1981 before acquiring Keavil House Hotel in 1988. Both are currently operated by Queensferry Hotels under the Best Western Plus brand.

Brent Council approves Aparthotel modernisation in Wembley

Council says refurbishment will help increase demand for accomodation in the area

creating 128 suite-style guest apartments, a restaurant and a leisure centre.

Brent Council has given planning permission to LHG (London Hotel Group) to modernise a “faded” Aparthotel hotel in Wembley, London.

The borough has identified a need for more visitor accommodation and LHG’s new hotel will help contribute to the overall regeneration of Wembley Central.

The 61-room property sits on the corner of Elm Road and St John’s Road. The council said modernisation of the building could provide better support for the local economy and increase demand for accommodation in the area.

Christian Desira from LHG said: “There’s an incredible energy in Wembley, a creative surge to modernise, to connect and welcome the world. We’re proud to be part of that and our proposal was developed with help from Brent Council’s planning team and from the community of residents and local businesses.

The new hotel is being designed by hotel architects Dexter Moren Associates, who previously worked with LHG on the newly-completed Best Western Plus Wembley. The group plans to increase the properties capacity by

“Their feedback on the plans through our public consultation was invaluable and shaped the final application which has been approved.”

UK hotel investment levels hit £5b The UK hotel sector last year saw investment volumes reach £5b including over £2.5b from foreign investors. The £5b figure represents an increase of 35% year on year, according to property adviser Knight Frank. This is in addition to the sector achieving strong revenue per available room (revpar) levels, robust growth in gross operating profit per available room (goppar), and an increase in occupancy rates nationwide. The success is built on strong fundamentals underpinning the sector, including a strong surge in portfolio activity and portfolio break-ups, meaning larger single assets available to the market and a strong hotel trading performance, both in London and the regions. The weakened pound has continued to draw greater than anticipated tourist numbers and invited more domestic staycation holidays, which has ensured occupancy rate growth, with the regions seeing record high occupancy rates of 77%. Julian Evans, head of healthcare, hotels and leisure at Knight Frank, said: “The UK hotel sector has witnessed a strong fourth quarter and overall a successful year, with a stable trading performance and

“We predict that we will also see infrastructure funds and global investors start to acquire UK hotel portfolios, as they recognise the secure long-term income offered by the sector. “However we anticipate that the resilience of the UK hotel sector will be persistently scrutinised in the uncertain times ahead and that growth in trading performance indicators is likely to be at a slower rate in 2018 than in the last year.”

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts Celebrates The Staycation With The Launch Of ‘Macdonald Moments’ In 2018

Michael Ellis has been appointed minister for arts, heritage and tourism in the latest cabinet reshuffle.

The UK’s largest independent hotel group, Macdonald Hotels & Resorts has started the New Year in style with the launch of its ‘Macdonald Moments’ campaign, a marketing first for the group.

The Conservative MP for Northampton North replaces John Glen, who was only in the role for seven months. Glen, who was appointed in June 2017 following the general election, succeeded Tracey Crouch as parliamentary under-secretary at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The ‘Macdonald Moments’ initiative will feature a calendar of monthly promotions as a reward and thank you to customers. The rewards are set to celebrate the quality and diversity within the group’s portfolio of hotels.

Ellis, a former barrister, was deputy leader of the House of Commons from July 2016 until his promotion was announced on 9 January. He met with Steve Ridgway and Sally Balcombe, chairman and chief executive of VisitBritain respectively, yesterday.

a positive year of revenue and profits, underpinned by the strong boost in tourism and increased overseas investment, which we expect to continue into 2018.

Vernon Hunte, government affairs director of the British Hospitality Association (BHA), congratulated Ellis on his new role. “We look forward to working with him closely to ensure that the needs and priorities of the hospitality industry are heard loud and clear within government.” Really useful meeting with Steve Ridgway and Sally Balcombe from @VisitBritain today and I am looking forward to championing the vitally important tourism sector. — Michael Ellis (@Michael_Ellis1) January 11, 2018

Kicking-off in January, the first theme will provide guests with the chance to experience Bed and Breakfast from £69 per room per night throughout the whole month in a location of their choice. An attractive from price set to thank regular guests and entice new customers to experience Macdonald Hotels & Resorts. This exclusive opportunity will be followed with a unique promotion each month for the duration of 2018 and there will also be a star prize at the end of the year for a customer who has experienced a ‘Macdonald Moment’ every month. Lyn MacDonald, group marketing director for Macdonald Hotels & Resorts, said: “At Macdonald Hotels & Resorts, we have a portfolio of 53 luxury hotels and resorts each with their own character and charm and we are focused on providing our guests with a home away from home where they can create moments and memories to last a lifetime. “From buzzing city centres to stunning lakes and dramatic mountains, our destinations offer a wide selection of backdrops for our guests to experience ‘Macdonald Moments’ in 2018 and we look forward to revealing more of our monthly themes as the campaign progresses through the year.”

Naumi Auckland announces 1st February opening date A brand-new design hotel set to surprise and delight in New Zealand

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Naumi Hotels, the Singapore-based design hotel group, is excited to launch Naumi Auckland Airport as its first location in New Zealand, as part of wider expansion plans in Australasia and internationally. Set to officially open on 1st February 2018, Naumi Auckland Airport has been designed to exude a contemporary vibe, with bold accents of colour and playful details at every turn.

A game-changer in the surrounding area and in Auckland as a whole, Naumi Auckland Airport brings a refuge from the predictable and joins Naumi Hotel Singapore and Naumi Liora Singapore as the third property by the award-winning group. Located in the airport precinct, south of the city centre and just minutes from the international and domestic airports, the hotel offers a perfect stylish stopover for leisure and business travellers. With 193 spacious rooms and suites offering private patios and balconies, an outdoor swimming pool, a perfectly manicured English garden, restaurant and bar, fully-equipped gym and over 500 sqm of conference and meeting space, the property offers all the signature Naumi

comforts with the idiosyncratic design and personalised, authentic service the brand is known for. For those with time to explore, the hotel is near New Zealand’s famous winery, Villa Maria Wine Estate, as well as the historic Otuataua Stonefields Reserve and Mangere Mountain.

Philosophy & Design The hotel theme pays homage to New Zealand’s native Tui bird, and has been realised by award winning Aucklandbased design practices Material Creative (interior designers) and Ellery Muir & Associates (architect), who were commissioned by Naumi Hotels to create a hotel that is unexpected, with elements to surprise and delight its guests. Breaking the mould of the traditional boutique hotel experience through a balance of functionality, art and design, Naumi Auckland Airport offers a truly immersive experience.

Industry News Mr Gaurang Jhunjhnuwala, CEO of Naumi Hotels Australia and New Zealand shares, “Naumi Hotels is anything but a cookie-cutter hotel brand, moving away from the sterile and the impersonal by offering micro, bespoke experiences for every guest.” On arrival into the hotel and its double-height lobby, a 24-carat gold leaf textured wall greets guests as they checkin. Commissioned and made by the NY Art Department (NZ), the piece of art represents the feathered nape of the Tui bird and took 6 months to create. A total of 95 gold discs hand-painted with feathers adorn the lounge area, which has been designed with rich layering of emerald greens, jewel blues and magenta pops, mimicking the shimmering Tui tones. Beyond the reception area, the bar and restaurant form the heart of the hotel and make a similar bold design statement. A light feature reading “ruffle your tail feathers” sits above the bar, inviting guests to socialise, while oversize armchairs, textured rugs and striking chandeliers imbue a sense of the dramatic. Art plays a central role at Naumi Auckland Airport, with an impressive gallery of works embellishing the hotel from the entrance through to each and every guest room. Featured artists include Belynda Henry, an Australian-based artist and winner of the NSW Wynne prize, who has been commissioned to capture the natural landscape of Auckland with multi-sensory pieces showcased in the hotel lobby and New Zealand-based designer Judi Bagust whose whimsical signature brush strokes are reminiscent of the particular song of the tui bird and compliment the landscapes. Gaurang further adds, “The hotel is designed to create ‘sweet spots’ that are aesthetically pleasing and mentally stimulating, through the unexpected and a sense of theatre.” The team at the hotel, known as Naumi “Gurus”, have been personally styled by retailers Topshop and Zara according to their individual look and taste, rather than conforming to the standard idea of a hotel uniform. Naumi Gurus are on hand throughout a guest’s stay to ensure every preference is met. The 193 guest rooms come in four variations – Habitat, Oasis, Blush and designer themed suites, each designed in colour palettes again evoking the multi-coloured iridescent sheen of the Tui bird’s feathers. Natural earth tones, rich materials and crisp white linen combine with these tones to create a warm yet contemporary feeling. Designed to maximise space, the guest rooms offer customised 5-layer bedding, brass accents, and sultry mood lighting. Belynda Henry’s landscape-inspired designs have here been translated into colourful rugs which adorn every room, adding vibrancy and a further element of interest enabling guests to interact with the art in a tactile way. The wooden panelling detail present in all rooms is an ode to the nesting nature of the tui birds, realigned in a honey comb pattern. Rooms have a total of 10 power points that allow guests the flexibility to power their requisite gadgets, and free no bandwidth restriction fibre-optic wifi, in built bed-side USB Slots and 50” Smart LED TVs with Netflix streaming come as standard. Bathrooms feature premium SOAK superfood skincare products, and are lined with tiles in a Herringbone pattern inspired by the Tui’s feathers, using coloured grouting in fuchsia pink, aqua teal, nautical blue or cherry red, adding to the sense of play. Complimentary mini-bars and yoga mats are further thoughtful touches guests will enjoy.

Two further designer-inspired Suites offer a luxurious way to appreciate design, reflecting the group’s love of art and fashion (Naumi Singapore has Andy Warhol and Coco Chanel-inspired suites). The Ziggy Suite is inspired by the classic chevron and striped Missoni design, with a sixperson neon orange lit bar, pool table and outdoor dining area, Kartell Stools, Jardan Sofas, customised rugs and original vintage artwork, whilst the Dotty Suite is inspired by the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama known for her brightly coloured conceptual pieces. Naumi is the sponsor for Auckland Art Gallery’s Obliteration Room by Yayoi Kusama Project, which is running from December 2017 – 2nd April 2018.

Privacy Door Latch Improves On Traditional Products

Many hotel guests feel much safer when they are away from home with an additional security device on their bedroom door that opens enough to see who is outside - and even examine an ID pass - but stops intruders from opening the door enough to gain access without the occupiers’ consent. Many people have also experienced other guests entering their rooms by mistake, sometimes even issued with the wrong keys at reception. The commonly used chain or swing bar designs need to be attached to both the door and the frame (and correctly aligned) and both these options can sometimes allow the door to open enough for them to be defeated. In comparison, the Pemko PDL, distributed in the UK by Relcross, has many advantages. The PDL consists of a single bracket with a strong steel flap that can be opened to completely stop the door from opening more than 56mm or closed to allow free access. It is very simple to operate even by those with limited dexterity making it practical for use in rooms adapted for disabled use as well as standard rooms.

It is only attached to the frame leaving the door untouched and pristine. There’s only one bracket to be fixed and no two parts to be aligned. This means it’s easily fitted in just minutes. Fixing to the frame gives a much stronger anchorage and does not rely on a chain or bar secured to a relatively thin and lightweight door. Additionally, it cannot be used to try and keep the door open and so reduces the opportunity for damage to the door and frame by misuse. The Pemko Privacy Door Latch is available in 5 finishes to harmonise with almost any colour scheme making it even more unobtrusive. Success in the hotel market in the USA has also led to a growing market for the PDL for use on private residential doors, particularly with its easy D-I-Y installation.

For further information call Relcross on 01380 729600, visit or email

Brighton - The Old Ship Hotel Overview With stunning, panoramic views, The Old Ship in Brighton part of the renowned Cairns Collection, exudes the highest standard from every aspect of this fabulous hotel.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The Historic hotel, with parts dating back as far as 1559 is one of Brighton’s many treasures. Situated on the front of Brighton’s coastline, over-looking the famous pier.

Entering this building feels like stepping into another world where every attention to detail is met and even the smallest aspects are tended to with highest level of care and attention. With an on-site gym & outdoor terraces, this hotel really is the perfect location for a short break, as well as equipping perfectly for meetings & Weddings.

The Food

I was lucky enough to be given a room overlooking the pier during my stay. This never went a miss, you can never feel so relaxed inside watching waves crash into the sand… believe me.

Dining within “Steak on Sea Bar & Restaurant” the restaurant within the building, had a very at homely feel to it. Serving a wide range of comfort food – meets modern twist dishes, I opted for the Chicken & Leek Terrine to start and The Sirloin steak – a deliciously cooked steak, gluten free and served with triple cooked chips, roasted shallot, vine tomatoes and your choice of sauce for the main course, both of which left me both satisfied and craving more.

The room was an excellent size, with double, twin or king beds all available, as-well as suites. The room had character and came with its very own en-suite bathroom, work desk and freeview TV. I found the hotel room very clean and tidy and the views were simply stunning. Each room offers free wi-fi to their guest, so a perfect destination for people on their travels or working away from home.

Full menu available here. Breakfast was a slightly more formal affair, Showcasing a modern outlook on classic British dishes with a commitment to quality ingredients and depth of flavour, the breakfast menu consisted of a variety of cooked and continental options with a selection of pastries and fruit juices.

A great place to while away Sunday afternoons, eat with good friends or even catch a game of Football from just down the road. To book your stay at the Old Ship Brighton, please click here.

Did you know you should have at least two pairs of shoes for work? Wearing them on alternate days allows them to fully airdry between use and extends the life of the shoe.

Choosing the correct footwear

lips and trips are a hazard we would all like to avoid in the hospitality industry, but with such a large selection of shoes on the market, how do you decide which is best? The first thing to look out for is a shoe that has been designed specifically for the industry. Brands such as Comfort Grip and AFD are designed solely for the hospitality trade.

Non-Slip & Safety Toes Whether your hotel has a vast marble reception or the smallest tiled kitchen, non-slip shoes are an absolute must for any employee in the hospitality industry. SRC testing is the most stringent specification for safety footwear. When a product is SRC tested it is trialled under two separate conditions; ceramic tile wetted with dilute soap solution and on smooth steel with glycerol. The shoe will pass or fail the slip test. This is something to look out for when purchasing shoes. You will also need to consider whether your role requires a steel safety toe, a composite (non-metal) safety toe or no safety toe at all.

Anyone that has worked in a kitchen can tell you that your shoes will take a beating. Not only are you on your feet all day in a hot environment, you are also likely to spill anything from gravy to soap suds – leaving your shoes in a mess. Comfort Grip offer a range of shoes with anti – bacterial lining that are also machine washable to keep your feet fresh and your shoes hygienic.

Weight DK83

Range Once you have made a decision on the best brand for you it must be able to provide for all of your workforce. Comfort Grip offers a range of shoes suitable for back of house and front of house roles as well two ladies styles. For a more relaxed look, AFD offer a range of shoes all of which meet the same high standards.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Many safety shoes can be heavy and clunky. A light weight shoe is far more comfortable for the wearer. Many safety shoes include a steel mid sole as they are designed for a building site or outdoor environment where you would want to protect the underneath of the foot from penetration by nails or similar. Comfort Grip offer a range without this which makes the shoe far lighter. AFD also offer a shoe with a composite safety to which makes it even lighter still!

Coffee Feature

Nitro infused coffee has landed Cold brew coffee for your business is now a reality Take advantage of cold brew technology and offer a velvety soft, creamy brew to your customers or staff from the first to the last pour, a perfect solution for your bar, restaurant, hotel or workplace.

What is nitro infused coffee?

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Cold coffee infused with nitrogen gas. Sounds strange right?

Much like Guinness, the infused brew is poured through a pressurised valve straight into your cup offering a smooth, creamy texture from the tap. Nitro brew is much smoother than traditional coffee. Our high quality beans are grown in El Salvador and Honduras providing a hint of chocolate. The tastes are much improved from the

traditional iced coffee and to top off your experience, you’ll be welcomed with a smooth, foamy top.

Why nitro? The nitrogen infusion eliminates sour flavours and reduces acidity offering a smooth velvety taste. • Nitrogen-infused coldbrew coffee is the latest cafe culture trend. Keep up-to-date with this new and exciting innovation. • No sugar, no gluten, no dairy, only 16 calories. • One glass of nitro coffee contains as much caffeine as 2 cans of the leading energy drink – now that’s a serious caffeine kick. • Brew’d has been selected by Twitter as their office cold brew coffee provider.

Why Brew’d is the best for nitro coffee Our coffee comes in a space-saving bag in box. Once it’s used up, simply recycle. Simple machine installation No awkward nitro piping required or large nitro canisters, our compact system is super easy to install with a minimum of fuss, plus there is no refrigeration required – perfect for ambient storage. Liquidline are sole distributors Meaning you get our great customer service combined with a prompt consumables delivery service that you can rely on. We can also provide your business with a full range of point of sale material.

The story behind the “Made in Germany” label If you ask anyone around the world what the “Made in Germany” label represents, the common answers will be: High quality, Durability, Precision, Trust, Innovation. Whilst these are accurate representations of German made products today, this was not the intention when this was introduced, quite the opposite in fact…

Why Britain started the “Made in Germany” labelling Yes, it says Britain, and no, it’s not a mistake. Introduced in Britain 130 years ago by Merchandise Marks Act 1887, it was intended to mark foreign produce more obviously. At this time, foreign manufactures had been making their own cheaper copies, which of course were not of a good quality as the better known domestic brands. Many goods were marked with the labels of British manufacturing companies, prior to importing them into the UK. Most of these were found to be originating from Germany. Britain introduced this label/stamp/tag as a requirement for all goods imported from Germany, with the aim of warning consumers of potentially bad quality products. Other countries around the world shared the same opinion of German goods, being described as “tending to be cheap and of low quality” at the World-Expo in Philadelphia in 1876. This didn’t last long though, in the space of 10 years Germany flipped this on its head. Upset at being insulted for poor quality, the German manufacturing industries invested heavily in machinery and better trained staff, which improved quality rapidly and at a huge scale. German manufacturers recognised the opportunity, and by the time the law had been passed introducing the label and it became well-known, the perception had already changed to what we know today.

German Brands As a world leader in exporting goods, German brands have been able benefit from having the “Made in Germany” stamp of quality to boost their reputation. Just think of some of the well-known German brands, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Bosch, Braun, Siemens, Adidas, Hugo Boss, there’s a long list. WMF is proud to be a German made company, founded in Geislingen an der Steige in Germany way back in 1853. We pride ourselves on innovative products of the highest quality, with sophisticated design and outstanding functionality.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Our machines are manufactured in Germany, to an excellent build quality standard. Not only are they designed to look great - they are built to last. All our customers can be assured they are investing in their future with a product that has longevity. The “Made in Germany” label sits proudly on our machines.

Amici di Carlo brings experience to affluent

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The affluent commuter town of Bearsden in the north west of Glasgow is the lucky recipient of a brand new, family-owned Italian restaurant and delicatessen, thanks to the efforts of renowned Scottish/Italian restaurateur Carlo Andreucetti and catering equipment specialists QED.

Amici di Carlo provides over-the-counter Italian cooked meats, cheeses, cakes and many other delicacies together with pizzas, salads and fresh Italian coffee to eat in or take away. As Carlo explains: ‘After being away from the restaurant business for some time, my partner and I decided to design a new outlet majoring on good quality, fresh Italian ingredients that the people of Bearsden could enjoy throughout the day.

Transformation of former bakers ‘We came across a former bakers’ retail and café premises near Bearsden Cross in the heart of the community and

set about transforming it into an authentic Italian dining experience earlier in 2017. ‘I had known Robert Campbell of QED for many years, as he is a well-regarded figure in the Scottish and UK catering industries. I was particularly impressed with the QED selection of display counters and knew that I could trust Robert and his team to deliver a project that matched our vision for Amici di Carlo. ‘The final result combines Italian warmth and hospitality with the very latest catering technology to create a unique venue that has our personality running all the way through it.

Italian dining and deli Glasgow suburb ‘The local Bearsden residents are already enjoying the unique ambience of Amici di Carlo and are coming in regularly to take advantage of the retail, takeaway and eat-in offerings of the business.

Extensive range of equipment QED supplied all the building refurbishment, shopfitting, electrical and plumbing work, including lighting, air conditioning and toilets. In addition, the equipment that was supplied and installed included refrigerated display counters, an ice cream counter, back bar coolers and shelving in the restaurant. The kitchen equipment included dishwasher, glass washer, storage refrigeration, pizza oven, pizza prep table, saladette, cooking suite, extraction, hygienic wall cladding and safety flooring. Pest problems?

Call Beaver Pest Control You already know that controlling pests discreetly is good for business. Bad reviews on social media not only affect bookings but cause wastage; free dinners / nights given to guests who complain. And hotels aren’t the easiest places to control pests, with busy restaurants and the constant movement of guests. A good working partnership with your pest control company can be very effective, however it must be a partnership with constructive communication. We recently worked with a restaurant who had a cockroach problem. Every time we carried out a treatment the outsourced night cleaning team would jet wash the kitchen, washing the gel and insecticide away. Very frustrating for us and expensive for them.

German cockroaches live in cracks and crevices, motor housings etc. A daily jet wash will not get rid of them.

For our part we will supply you with:

• An RSPH level 2 in pest management • • • • •

qualified, experienced technician who will get to know you and your premises. Free call outs if you need us. A fast response, same day or next as standard. A specialist proofing team to help block entry points. Discretion. We don’t talk about your pest problems. Value for money. We always quote best price and are surprisingly competitive.

We need from you:

• Work with us, listen to us and action any • •

recommendations wherever possible. Don’t wash away our treatments with the night clean! We do want you to take housekeeping seriously though.

We work with some large well known hotels in Central London and have had success clearing some of the most challenging pest problems using the latest techniques.

We use the following innovations to help us:

• Specialist surveys using tracking dust and • • • • •

endoscope cameras Housekeeping staff training Intensive night treatments to get difficult problems under control quickly. Hot spot mapping Bed bug sniffer dogs Heat treatments with a 4 hour turnaround including steam treatments.

On each visit as well as treating for pests, our technicians will thoroughly inspect for entry points, you can then use our specialist proofing team or your own contractors to proof. If you have a long term problem, talk to us. We can help you. Call 0208 355 3443 for a free survey.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Eventually we treated on a daily basis to clear the problem. This is an example of where a lack of understanding contributed to prolonging what should have been a fairly simple pest problem. It also showed us how critical it is that all parties work together as a team.

2020 Vision: the

will drive hospitality

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

By Luis de Souza, CEO of NFS Technology Group

When we were asked to be Gold Sponsors of the Restaurant Association’s 50th birthday celebration this year, we didn’t hesitate.

Yes, the hospitality industry continues to face challenges including the effects of Brexit, labour and skill shortages and rising costs. Yet business remains buoyant in many areas. The start of 2017 saw the highest number of new hotel rooms opening since 2012 – and PwC predicts that room occupancy will rise to 76% in London this year. As providers of hospitality software, over the last three years we’ve also seen the exciting development of many

new concepts and restaurant openings in the UK. In fact, we’re so convinced of the robust nature of the industry that we’re Gold Sponsors at the Restaurant Association’s 50th anniversary celebrations at the Savoy on February 26. As we look ahead to postBrexit 2020, and examine the experiences of our own customers, I’m sure the businesses who thrive will be those that take advantage of technology to transform the way they operate.

Hospitality Suppliers

Mobility – Our clients Gaucho/CAU, a growing group of steakhouses, use our Aloha EPOS mobile technology to drive greater staff mobility and improve customer service. Serving staff can use mobile devices including tablets to take orders at tableside, sending them instantly to the kitchen. Cloud technology – Honest Burgers have successfully deployed our cloud EPOS solution Silver at over 28 restaurants, delivering multisite management and web-based reporting on a cost-effective basis. Because the system is cloudbased, it gives managers access to comprehensive information wherever they have an internet connection. Online bookings – The contemporary Beales Hotel Group deployed our roomMaster PMS and Rendezvous Events venue management software to streamline operations. The PMS automatically pushes out rates and availability to online travel agents, saving staff time

and giving guests 24/7 booking facilities. General Manager Mark Schipper says: “We’re doing incredibly well on our rooms and the rate is continuing to go up.” Social media – Dishoom, one of our fast growing restaurant operators, use social media as a key component of their customer engagement. Head of operations Brian Trollip says Aloha EPOS from NFS has helped Dishoom grow to six large and successful restaurants, with more in the pipeline thanks to keeping customers happy. Personalised service – The British Airways i360 in Brighton is one of the UK’s most exciting new venues – and uses our Rendezvous venue management software to deliver a great customer experience. “Whether it’s checking availability of a room, checking a contract for a client or issuing an invoice, the system has worked really well for us,” says Sales Manager Sophie Shepherd. Loyalty - Shandon Hotel and Spa in Donegal has quickly established a reputation as one a leading spa hotel with the help of our roomMaster PMS. The system’s gift card facilities are helping the resort to promote loyalty. “It’s great for us – we actually brought in £320,000 on gift cards in the first year,” said General Manager Carolynne Harrison.

So it’s clear that as we move on through troubled times ahead, successful hospitality businesses will need to combine efficient operations with the innovative use of technology and reliable services from suppliers to deliver a profitable business and a great guest experience. With our 24/7 support desk and well-established systems, at NFS we’re well-placed to help. As Colin Williams, Estates and Property Manager at CAU, says: “We’ve been with NFS for ten years, and they are absolutely fundamental to us. The NFS product line is very good – and you get an unbelievable level of customer service. “We like the functionality in terms of streamlining our business – it’s saving us money and time, improving operational efficiency and capturing data so we can identify trends. “Our market is constantly changing, and the Aloha EPOS solution from NFS helps us keep up. In all, it helps us deliver a slicker guest service experience.” See for the latest updates and software information.

foodservice market and explores As a nationwide commercial catering equipment Distributor we have been able to maximise opportunities and capture some major concerns of foodservice operators through personal contact with customers either by visits, or conversations while attending our relaxed Open Kitchen Live events. These were ultimately distilled to the same fear: “loss of customers”.

There are multiple reasons to be fearful: loss of customers can be the result of many, complex, factors: the following were the foremost areas of concern:

The customer invested in the system including a Nieco automated conveyor char broiler, an Antunes ‘Cheese Melter’ and a VCT Hi-Speed Vertical Contact toaster for toasting their buns - their burgers sell at a whopping £14.75each.

Seeing is Believing! See Left for comparison of customers’ fresh burger cooked on Nieco conveyor char-broiler in 3.45 mins vs cooked on customers’ own chargrill in 8 minutes (cooked by its own Chef) to same internal temperatures

Shortages of skilled staff can probably be attributed to most of the fears outlined above plus the further fear of a reduced pool of potential employees. To harness lesser skilled staff savvy Operators have been investing in the latest technological advances unsurprising from large chains with very deep pockets.

See right for one of our companion pieces for the Nieco Broiler - Hi-Speed Vertical C o n t a c t To a s t e r VCT2000 – never proven by us but said to toast around 750 buns per hour – all we know for a fact is that in continuous production a single person cannot feed the unit fast enough!

• How to stay ahead of – or at least

One result of automated technology is BK, a major in every sense, uses conveyorised char broiling platforms worldwide to cook its burgers.

Interestingly, smart smaller start-up companies ‘bit the bullet’ and made substantial investments in equipment and so evaded several threats by either increasing their ability to employ unskilled staff, or enhancing or preserving their brands’ product consistency and quality into the foreseeable future.

Automation ticked all ’fear’ boxes for 3 Ethnic Operators. Visiting from the North East each were seeking a solution that would release them from the tyranny of char-griddles dogged by a lack of skilled staff, and to improve product consistency and temperature control.

at deepening fears within the means of minimising them. They brought their own products - spiced Burgers, marinated Chicken Tikka, marinated cubed lamb, spiced minced lamb kebabs, whole muscle marinated chicken breasts, a variety of mixed vegetables - to the Live Kitchen and tested the Nieco conveyor charbroiler:

Our team quickly established optimum temperature and belt speeds and produced each product to consistent core temperatures and an authentic finish comparable with that of a tandoor. All 3 invested to speed up their production, achieve product consistency, and easily train lesser-skilled staff to use this simple automated system. Sometimes Hot Holding is the answer to speeding up service and many customers use the visual attraction offered by presenting products in Hot MultiDeck display units.

Can’t ignore retail sector giants such as Tesco, Waitrose, Morrison’s, which primarily sell cooked Chickens, and passing their rigorous design standard testing processes acts as a testament to the efficiency of equipment, in this case Fri-Jado Hot Multi-Deck units.

Says Equip Line MD, Jacki Walker: “Our experience proves these innovative technologies are not just for major operators, but are equally applicable to small and independent operators. We have really enjoyed being challenged this past year, and look forward to working with customers to develop solutions to their specific challenges in 2018”.

A ‘Grab & Go’ is not just for Chickens! These household name retailers, together with many high street icons including Pret A Manger, Greggs, Itsu, Abokado, and many more are all further testament to the efficiency of the units when holding a great diversity of products. A few examples includes Soups, one-pot Stews, porridge, pastries & pies, hot sandwiches, - and not to forget Wraps which actually started the craze! All offer their customers high quality products held at correct legal temperatures that they can literally just Grab ‘n’ Go.

A ‘Grab & Go’ system is a real time-saving boon to time-poor customers who just want to run into your store, grab their favourite lunch, pay and go!

The Synergy Grill is a pioneering chargrill that uses 52% less gas. This gas saving equates to an average of £12,238 every five years, helping cultivate a carbon neutral kitchen. It also uniquely has no fat tray to clean. These benefits have been adopted by top chefs and snagged top prize for innovation at The Commercial Kitchen Show where the judges were “Wowed by a British-made design that is a true innovation for chargrilling.”

The greatest benefit, however, is flavour. Synergy Grills get hotter than average chargrills. Heat ‘atomises’ the natural fats that are released during cooking which are misted back into food making it incredibly succulent.
