CUSTOM-MADE NATURAL POLYX-OIL TREATMENT DURABLE YOUR STYLE
The easy way to transform your bathroom – waterproof wall art on acrylic glass and Alu-Dibond even large-format pictures are very light and can be hung without a frame. The key difference between acrylic glass and AluDibond is their distinctive aesthetic finish. The high-gloss surface of acrylic glass gives the motif a luxurious touch, while the semi-matt look of Alu-Dibond creates an understated result with no reflections. As the mounting brackets attached to the back of the panel are completely concealed, this allows the picture to appear as if it is floating on the wall, evoking the elegance and feel of a gallery. Alternatively, the picture can be hung using matt-look stainless steel spacers. It is important to always use rust-resistant spacers in bathrooms. Stylish motifs for your wellness oasis
Alu Dibond
Did you know that we spend up to 30 minutes in the bathroom in the morning? To start the day feeling relaxed, creating a calming atmosphere of well-being is therefore paramount. When designing a bathroom, even the most passionate decorating experts run out of creative ideas, which is why bathrooms often tend to look a little neglected. We’ll show you a few decor tricks that can be easily implemented, ensuring your wall decoration is tailored to the challenging conditions of the bathroom. A stylish shower curtain, creative mosaic tiles and a fluffy bathmat are not the only way to transform a plain, functional room into a wellness oasis.
Alu-Dibond and acrylic glass – two versatile solutions, glamour factor included Alu-Dibond and acrylic glass are both completely resistant to moisture – splashes of water are no match for these robust materials. The easy-care products can be easily wiped clean, without damaging your favourite motif. Wall pictures made of AluDibond and acrylic glass are even immune to the effects of UV rays. Both products are composed of plastic, which means
Many people shy away from decorating the bathroom because it is a wet room. However, there is a simple solution for wall decoration in rooms with high humidity and a risk of splashing: wall pictures made from Alu-Dibond and acrylic glass are the ideal way to brighten up bathrooms.
For maximum impact, opt for high-contrast photographs in bold colours on Alu-Dibond or acrylic glass. Motifs on acrylic glass benefit from the impressive depth effect of the material. Not only does the white background ensure radiant colours, it also provides added protection. Underwater pictures, sea motifs or idyllic beach scenes are especially well suited for decorating home bathrooms. Other popular motifs include relaxing orchids and Buddha figures – perfect for dreaming of faraway places and escaping from the daily grind. If you feel like breaking away from the light look typically used in bathrooms, go for vibrant colours and added pep with witty illustrations. Cloud motifs are also great in bathrooms – in a room normally associated with water, why not introduce the opposite element on the walls by adorning them with celestial images? For more ideas, the Posterlounge online shop has a dedicated bathroom category full of inspiring motifs.
The composition of the printed panels even highlights the matt or shiny surface of bathroom tiles, allowing pictures to be perfectly integrated into any design concept. Posterlounge, an acclaimed art publisher and online shop for high-quality wall art, offers a wide range of bathroom motifs available on Alu-Dibond or acrylic glass.

5 storey cabin platform lift for Sefton Park Sefton Park House is a half way house based in Weston-Super-Mare offering a therapeutic community to support and challenge people with drug and alcohol addiction. The building had an existing passenger lift with a full counterweight which had reached the end of it’s life and was uneconomical to repair, so they contacted Invalifts to enquire about the possibility of replacing the lift with something better. Invalifts recommended their M6000LS platform cabin lift which could travel the five floors and comes complete with a self supporting shaft which could be fitted within the existing shaft. The client approved this, and Invalifts began by removing the existing lift and associated mechanisms. Then followed some remedial work to alter the pit, as only 100mm was required, and the floors were adjusted to suit the requirements of the new lift, before the installation of a new M6000LS lift was completed. A shaft size of 1100 x 1400mm allowed the space efficient lift to have an internal cabin size of 900 x 1250mm, whilst just a single phase electrical supply powers the lift. The cabin was specified with automatic centre opening doors, single press button operation and an autodialer as standard, whilst due to the internal building restrictions, bespoke 1900mm doors were installed at each landing in place of the standard two metre doors. To find out more about the M6000LS platform cabin lift, you can give Invalifts a call on 0845 468 2543 and speak to one of their friendly experts, or visit the website.

The revolving door is made up of three (or four) doors that are attached to a central shaft. A small motor is used to allow the doors to rotate at a specified speed. Most businesses that employ the use of revolving doors do so because of heavy traffic entering and exiting their facilities. Revolving doors have been around for quite some time, and their architecture has not changed much since they were first conceptualized. The very first model for revolving doors was patented in 1881 by a German inventor named H. Bockhacker. However, it wasn’t until inventor Theophilus Van Kannel got the U.S. patent for his three-way storm door in 1888 that the idea of revolving doors became more widely accepted. Kannel’s model contained weather stripping as a way of making the door more energy efficient. He formed his own manufacturing company—Van Kannel Revolving Door Co.—and eventually sold it in 1907 to International Steel (currently named International Revolving Door Co.) We see a lot of jokes about people getting stuck walking through revolving doors, but these doors are for more than just comedy. They have a significant environmental impact when they are used. For starters, revolving doors reduce the amount of air that circulates in and out the building. Therefore, your business will be able to keep a constant temperature, which is another benefit for the environment. To put it simply, having revolving doors saves on energy costs, and here’s why. Heating and air systems and the increase in high-rise buildings have increased energy usage. In 2006, MIT conducted a study to determine how much energy is wasted when people go in
Revolving Doors: Opening the Door to a Better Environment
•14•
and out of a building. Their findings indicated that 36-watt hours of energy—the equivalent of a half-hour of using a 60-watt light bulb— was used by a person when they came in and out of the facility. When that figure was multiplied by all the people who come in and out of the building, the figure was 80,000-watt-hours of energy. Because office facilities use up to 40% of the total consumed energy in the U.S., having resolving doors to cut energy costs will have a profound effect on the environment. However, few people are actualizing the impact of having revolving doors. According to the MIT research, no more than 30% of people employ the use of revolving doors when given the opportunity. If people were more informed about using revolving doors, then more people would embrace the use of the product and appreciate its many benefits: •
Creates a continuous seal between the air outdoors and indoors, which also translates into more suitable and consistent temperatures.
•
Reduces the strain placed on heating and air conditioning systems, which reduces the energy usage and utility bill cost for the facility.
•
A reduction in air change occurrences, which keep the entry sealed. `
•
A reduction in pollution and noise.

RINNAI HOT WATER instant, continuous, limitless and sensibly economic for every type of commercial site Installers, specifiers and end users’ installers have the most practical and economically viable solution for all domestic and commercial hot water heating and delivery needs in Rinnai’s comprehensive range of energy efficient A rated, electronically controlled continuous flow gas fired units and systems. •15•
All Rinnai internal HDC condensing continuous flow water heaters, are room-sealed, power flue appliances while the external weatherproof models have forced exhaust which enables them to be compact, saving both floor and wall space. The natural gas or LPG water heaters guarantee a limitless supply of accurately temperature controlled safe and useable hot water, time after time after time to any type or size of site or application. The Rinnai range delivers energy saving performance and low greenhouse emissions through new low NOx burner technology. All units and systems can be installed as stand-alone or manifolded to provide unlimited hot water for the largest of all commercial sites such as big hotels, busy gyms, high rise offices etc. Water temperature is and can be pre-set through easy-to-use built in digital controls, eliminating the risk of scalding and potentially eradicating the need for thermostatic mixing valves. Water can be used simultaneously at several points of delivery with no fluctuation of temperature. The newly updated Rinnai Infinity range is designed for use directly off the mains, with no need for large, ungainly and energy inefficient storage vessels. For example, Rinnai’s Infinity 16i continuous flow water heater is designed to meet the hot water needs of domestic and light commercial applications. The Infinity 16i, weighing just 18kg and measuring less than 675mm (H) x 139mm (W), has a delivery capacity of 15.2 litres per minute, at a temperature rise of 25°. Rinnai Heavy Duty water heaters are high efficiency gas continuous flow water heaters with outputs up to 69kW. The Rinnai Heavy Duty HD50i Internal water heater is a wall hung, gas fired, continuous flow water heater capable of producing hot water at 770 litres per hour at a 50°C rise. The HD50i has a 125mm concentric flue which can be extended up to 15m, less 1m per 45° bend. Compact and reliable, the HD50i operates between 1-10 bar pressure, which is suitable for mains and systems with boost pumps. Incoming water temperatures in excess of 60°C are accepted, making the HD50i suitable for secondary return systems. Water can be delivered at high volume with minimum gas consumption. All models have full electronic ignition with no pilot light and operate on demand only, consuming no gas when not in use.
•16•
Rinnai’s unique condensing technology incorporates two heat exchangers to achieve optimum water heating generated from every cubic metre of Natural Gas or LPG. The condensing process delivers up to 95% thermal efficiency, which translates to significant energy savings when compared to standard on-demand water heaters or conventional stored systems. For applications where the use of stored hot water cannot be avoided, i.e. in refurbishments where there may be a constraint on the amount of gas available, usually through the gas main size, Rinnai’s ‘pack’ system covers this shortfall by fitting a small amount of storage capacity. Rinnai Gas Hot Water Storage Pack represents the best value-for-money solution on the market today with everything delivered direct to site in one complete package The pack consists of up to five heavy duty water heaters with an equal number of flue kits (for internal heaters) or an equal number of pipe cover boxes (for external models) and sufficient valve packs. Also included is one hot water storage vessel (stainless steel 300L, 500L or 800L glass lined steel) along with necessary valves and one primary pump with valves and one unvented kit. Add to this an expansion vessel of either 50L or 80L capacity, and all relevant valves. Common header flue systems are also available to further stream line the installation. Typical applications for the commercial ranges include cafés, nurseries, factories and offices, laundries, hotels and restaurants, sports clubs, shower blocks in caravan parks – and many more. Rinnai has also embraced renewables in the form of the Rinnai Booster, which, it claims, is the most energy efficient boosting solution on the market today. The water heater maximises solar gain, as it only functions and consumes energy when more hot water is needed to boost the solar gain, meaning that the true impact of solar is being achieved. The rest of the time the unit is inactive.
Heating, Ventilation & Insulation
Rinnai continuous flow hot water systems deliver on all levels in a cost effective and practical manner. Easy to install and operate the units provide a flexible and energy efficient solution for domestic applications and for all sectors of business and industry. An Easy Way to Design in a Renovation or When considering renovation or new build, then Isokern’s Pumice Double Module system is highly recommended. The easy, put-together blocks provide a zero distance to combustibles due to their volcanic insulation and different range of diameters suitable for any project. The lightweight blocks are easy to handle. The outer and inner blocks are laid at the same time but with staggered joints for safety and stability. The double layer of pumice separated by an air gap maximises the chimney insulation. This has been used in a number of renovations as well as new build projects throughout the UK. The features of the Isokern DM include: • Unique Features of the Isokern DM system • Zero distance to combustibles on straight rendered chimneys (when using top ring terminal) • Quick and easy to assemble • Lightweight materials, easy to handle • Highly insulating pumice for better draw and minimum heat loss • Staggered joints for maximum safety and stability • Air gaps between outer casing and flue prevents surface staining • Good resistance to temperature variations gives the maximum performance for your appliance. • CE Certified to EN1858 with the designation T450, NI, D, 3, G (00). And combined with a Schiedel Isokern Magnum Firechest, the results can be amazing.

a Chimney New-Build
heating, ventilation & insulation
One such remarkable installation of a Magnum Firechest with a Pumice Chimney System took place Down Under in the Australian Bush. The project was undertaken by the Volcanic Chimney Company, based in Wales (it’s a long story, continued on our website). An old patio was replaced with a roaring fire, using a Magnum Fire Chest and an Isokern Double Module Chimney System. All chosen due to the insulation properties and easy construction. Another project, a little more closer to home, was undertaken by Billing Chimneys, which saw an Isokern Pumice Liner installed, with the construction of a register plate to support the liners, going through a thatched roof. Billings chose Isokern in this particular situation because of its longevity, durability and excellent insulation. The insulation was very important because it kept the inside of the flue hot, but also prevented damage from any external heat transfer into the adjacent structure. For more information on our Isokern range, please feel free to email us on info@schiedel.co.uk or give us a call on 01202 861650 – you can also visit our website, www.schiedel.co.uk which has a wealth of information, including a number of video instruction guides.

Rinnai Tackles Rugby Sponsorship With Widnes
Rinnai, the UK’s leading manufacturing supplier of commercial hot water heating systems, has a major sports sponsorship with one of Rugby Leagues most historic clubs - Widnes Vikings.
Comments Chris Goggin, “We are absolutely delighted to take a very active sponsorship with Widnes Vikings. We share a common belief in approach and values of excellence, innovation and responsibility to the wider community. “Rinnai is a worldwide brand name in its field and has taken some major global sponsorships – including the Queensland Reds, The World Club World Cup event held January this year in Tokyo, the World Ice Skating Championships and the US Nascar competition held in Daytona, Las Vegas and other major American venues. “The Widnes Vikings are also local to our own UK headquarters so it is all an excellent fit.
And a big part of that sponsorship is on two community-based programs called “Rinnai match day experiences”. This is targeted at enabling young kids to play rugby tournaments before Super League matches are played or televised. “Getting kids into sport is what we want to achieve together with Widnes Vikings,” says Rinnai Operations chief Chris Goggin. “The first of these took place recently and had more than 100 kids playing, and 250 people involved in all – the program is advertised not only in our local area but within the areas of the opposition team. This means that the Rinnai match-day experience is promoted across the country.

“The second element of Rinnai’s commitment to the community through Widnes Vikings is to help people within our local area that are having a hard time at present – we give them a trip to meet their favourite players, a behind-the-scenes look at the facilities, meet the Sky Sports team and have match-day passes with hospitality. Just recently it was the turn of local lad Robert, who was recently diagnosed with motor neurone disease. The sponsorship also takes the form of the Rinnai logo and brand name on the back of the playing shorts. This will be the second season both parties have taken this unconventional but innovative style of sports sponsorship.
Installers, specifiers and end users’ installers have the most practical and economically viable solution for all domestic and commercial hot water heating and delivery needs in Rinnai’s comprehensive range of energy efficient A rated, electronically controlled continuous flow gas fired units and systems. The natural gas or LPG water heaters guarantee a limitless supply of accurately temperature controlled safe and useable hot water, time after time after time to any type or size of site or application. The Rinnai range delivers energy saving performance and low greenhouse emissions through new low NOx burner technology. All units and systems can be installed as stand-alone or manifolded to provide unlimited hot water for the largest of all commercial sites such as hotels, busy gyms, high rise offices etc. Water temperature is and can be pre-set through easy-to-use built in digital controls, eliminating the risk of
Heating, Ventilation & Insulation
League Vikings scalding and potentially eradicating the need for thermostatic mixing valves. Water can be used simultaneously at several points of delivery with no loss of heat. The larger Rinnai 26i continuous flow water heater is one of the company’s best-selling internal water heaters worldwide and has a flow rate of 19.6 litres/min, raised at 33°C. Rinnai Heavy Duty water heaters are high efficiency gas continuous flow water heaters with outputs up to 69kW. The Rinnai Heavy Duty HD50i Internal water heater is a wall hung, gas fired, continuous flow water heater capable of producing hot water at 756 litres per hour at a 50°C rise. The HD50i has a 125mm concentric
flue which can be extended up to 15m, less 1m per 45° bend. Compact and reliable, the HD50i operates between 1-10 bar pressure, which is suitable for mains and systems with boost pumps. Incoming water temperatures of up to 60°C are accepted, making the HD50i suitable for secondary return systems. Water can be delivered at high volume with minimum gas consumption. All models have full electronic ignition with no pilot light and operate on demand only, consuming no gas when not in use. All Rinnai internal HDC condensing continuous flow water heaters, are room-sealed, power flue appliances while the external weatherproof models have forced exhaust which enables them to be compact, saving both floor and wall space.
Rinnai continuous flow hot water systems deliver on all levels in a cost effective and practical manner. Easy to install and operate the units provide a flexible and energy efficient solution for domestic applications and for all sectors of business and industry. heating, ventilation & insulation
Vectaire’s range of residential ventilation products is one of the most comprehensive available for improving indoor air quality. High performance, low energy, economical, and environmentally friendly products with EC motors, (together with other low carbon products) all tackle the problems of condensation and pollution in dwellings. Products provide low level, continuous ventilation, often with heat recovery with up to 93% heat exchange efficiency, and are for installation into lofts, cupboards, ceiling voids and walls. All Vectaire products are designed to provide the degree of ventilation necessary to combat indoor air pollution and battle the ailments it causes.
Vectaire has three, 3-speed products with EC motors for single room installation. The Elegance 1003 axial fan is for wall, ceiling, or window (with additional window kit), and the Elix 1003 is a centrifugal model for walls or ceilings. Both fans run continuously at a choice of 2 lower speeds and allow the user to boost fan capacity when required. They are available with comfort timer (to avoid unnecessary nighttime operation) and humidity control. Their design ensures low noise levels and optimum performance guaranteeing energy saving, cheap ventilation. They have low specific fan powers, are IPX4 protected, and are SAP PCDB Listed.
Vectaire’s range of MVHRs – vertical and horizontal – are all low energy products with EC motors and are manufactured to ensure both optimum ventilation and air quality combined with low noise levels, running costs and excellent SFP ratings. They can now be commissioned via an LCD screen. The upright whole house heat recovery units – the Midis and the Maxis - offer the option of either an integral LCD or a remote LCD commissioning unit, whilst the in-line EVO250 and Mini can be commissioned using the remote unit. Thus, the commissioning engineer can easily adjust detailed unit functions including, for example, the trickle, purge and boost speeds for each motor, the length of the boost speed over-run time, the time delay before the boost speed kicks in, holiday mode and night-time boost inhibitor times. The user can see the speed at which the fan is operating, the relative humidity etc, and when the filters need replacing. The user can also set the unit to holiday mode for energy saving when the dwelling is not occupied. These units are all manufactured in our Andover factory to ISO9001 and are also SAP PCDB Listed.

Accessibility and Inclusion - The Future of the Built Environment at Naidex 2018 Accessibility is still an issue in 2018. Lack of inclusion in the built environment comes as a challenge to many in their daily lives, and a great deal more than you’d think - 13.3 million people approximately. In light of this, Naidex - Europe’s leading disability event - has decided to address the issue in a bid for positive change. This year, Naidex will be introducing the Home, Design & Build Summit - an area of the show dedicated to the exploration of accessibility in the built environment. Industry leading experts will be delivering seminars looking at today’s situation and finding the solutions of tomorrow. Here is a look at some of the topics that will be covered at this year’s Naidex…
The New Look of Inclusion A new wave of inclusive architects have emerged to change the way people perceive accessibility. Inclusive Home founder Vaila Morrison will explain how and why accessible designs need to be promoted more within home design media, so that both people with and without disabilities can understand the need for inclusive homes. Elaine Hollerhead the founder of DESIGNATE will explain how architects and designers are looking to combine functionality, safety and inspirational concepts to make homes more attractive to potential buyers, increasing both well-being and property value in her seminar at Naidex.
Technology taking over Accessibility Smarthomes are becoming more prominent and are a great tool of independence for people with disabilities. Macro Level Smarthome’s founder, James Kinsman, will explore in his seminar the advances in commercial smarthome technology, and the ways in which it can be used to assist in gaining independence, by integrating standard consumer equipment as opposed to requiring expensive custom designed “accessible” hardware. Technology in the built environment’s benefits also span to the healthcare sector. Sensory Guru is a virtual and augmented reality brand renowned for creating technology that is redefining the boundary between the virtual and physical worlds. Its CEO, Lee Blemings, will be uncovering the advantages that these emerging technologies can have for people with ASD and dementia, living in residential settings.
Naidex Naidex will once again bring over 12,000 visitors from all over Europe together for the 44th time, on the 25th & 26th April, at the NEC Birmingham. Providing educational insight into future trends in accessible designs, world-class speakers, product demonstrations, 1-2-1 advice, networking opportunities and new interactive features, Naidex will showcase the future of the built environment.

Bathrooms, Washrooms & Kitchens The Ouse 520 was the second rail we designed and is still amongst our most popular rails. Standing at 700mm high and 520mm wide it is available in both a polished and satin finish. It is in fact the baby brother of the Ashdown 520 rail, our most popular rail. It is available in 3 formats across the range: central heating, dual fuel and electric only. It is also available in 4 widths: 300mm wide, 400mm wide, 520mm wide and 620mm wide. his highly popular rail works aesthetically in most bathrooms making it both versatile and practical. It is particularly popular amongst contractors. The bar configuration works well within most bathrooms and compared to a number of similar rails within the market place our rail has 12 horizontal rails as opposed to the standard 10. This leads to a greater heat output and a more substantial visual impact.
T
We specialise in stainless steel rails and all of our rails are manufactured from 100% stainless steel with the added practical advantage that they will not rust, flake or corrode meaning they can be utilised in all systems including open. ethical durable choice, manufactured from over 90% recyclable material and being 100% recyclable in itself. It is furthermore not subject to ecologically harmful plating processes. This all adds to the ecological impact of your development be it large or small. The recommended retail pricing for the Ouse rails in central heating format is as follows: Ouse 300 £189.95, Ouse 400 £198.95, Ouse 520 £205.95, Ouse 620 £239.95 (all prices are ex VAT). Flexi Fix toilet seat It’s a tale as old as time itself. You think you have found the perfect toilet seat but then the inevitable happens, it starts to slip and slide which is not only very uncomfortable but can also be dangerous. Croydex has created a solution for this everyday problem with the grip pad technology and ‘V’ plate hinges designed to adjust to most toilet pan holes and can be fitted from above or below with ease.
By combining adjustable chrome-plated hinges, secure grip adhesive and our unique patented ‘V’ plate, they have created a durable, stylish seat that will always fit and never slip. In three simple steps the seat can be applied, the collapsible supports hold the hinges away from the pan while the seat is aligned and screwed into place. Once some pressure has been applied, the supports collapse and the selfadhesive pads grip the toilet pan for a secure fit. As the grip pad technology is a pressure sensitive adhesive, it is easy to re-position the hinges should the supports accidently collapse. Not only do the hinges make the Flexi-Fix seats a great addition to any bathroom, there are a wide range of added bonus features. The anti-bacterial treatment helps to keep the toilet seat bacteria free and if that isn’t enough some seats come with a quick release feature which allows the seat to be completely removed from the pan for easy cleaning. Other seats within the range also come with soft close hinges, meaning that there aren’t any loud bangs or trapped fingers. From durable moulded wood to sleek thermoset plastic, there are a range of finishes and styles to suit any bathroom décor. If you want to see the full Flexi-Fix toilet seat range then go over to our website at www.croydex.com.

bathrooms, washrooms & kitchens Modern Bathroom
You’ll be spoilt for choice when trying to decide which bathroom suite will fit well in your new room. A contemporary Freestanding Bath tub will instantly give any bathroom the wow factor and if you’ve got enough space to place it under the window then give it a try. This will become the first thing friends will notice when they walk into your bathroom and the light coming in from the garden will be a natural back light.
Freestanding Taps
To complement your gorgeous bath tub why not combine it with it’s very own statement piece such as a freestanding bath and shower mixer tap. Not only do they look elegant, but they also give you the freedom to decide whether you have the tap at one end of the bath tub or perhaps in the middle. Having the two separate shower and bath heads are also great for practical reasons such as washing hair and cleaning the bath tub too.
Modern Bathroom Design Ideas from Bathroom Takeaway.co.uk The key style tip to creating a modern bathroom is to keep your look simple and clean by choosing a matching white unit with perhaps a rectangular finish. You can always add a touch of colour through ceramic jugs, towels and even artwork. Adding a touch of greenery is a great trend and an easy addition to any bathroom. You could include a hanging plant or just a simple potted cactus which is easy to look after and also has relaxing qualities too. Adding a recess for holding candles and trinkets is also a modern trend that is easy to create just by adding a stud wall behind your bathroom suite.
LED Mirror
No modern bathroom would be complete without light, mirrors and storage. Your bathroom should be a place where you can retreat to after a long day in the office and the last thing you should be looking at is half used bottles of shampoo. If space is an issue then perhaps choosing a mirror that has light and storage would be the best idea such as the 800 x 600mm illuminated led mirror with demister shaver socket.
Toilet and Basin
When choosing a toilet and basin try to keep the same shape as the rest of your bathroom items. If you’ve chosen a gorgeous modern rectangular freestanding bath then a rectangular toilet and basin will finish the look perfectly.

Growth of manufacturer recognised at national design impact awards Sealant and adhesive manufacturer Polyseam has achieved the ultimate design accolade for the rebrand of its GRAFT product range. Aston Martin; Josh Berger, president and managing director of Warner Bros; and renowned entrepreneur Deborah Meaden.
The Yorkshire-headquartered company and its branding agency The Engine Room were both presented with a gold design impact trophy at the glittering DBA Design Effectiveness Awards in London. But the GRAFT project also went on to scoop the ultimate recognition of the evening when it was announced as the Grand Prix winner of winners at the end of the night. Since GRAFT’s launch in 2014, annual sales have increased by a staggering 744% and export levels have risen by more than £1million. In fact, this transformational business exercise has played a significant part in Polyseam now building a 50,000sqm factory which is expected to create a further 50 jobs by 2020. It was this bottom line impact that impressed the line-up of high-profile judges, which included Andy Palmer, CEO of
•46•
Commenting on the win, Polyseam’s marketing manager Olando Salina said: “The evolving challenges in the manufacturing market mean we must continually innovate to drive growth. We therefore focused on the development of an environmentally friendly, all-in-one adhesive and sealant created using our own in-house expertise. “This high-performance technology was already award-winning in its own right. But it didn’t achieve the traction we sought, which is why we engaged The Engine Room to help clarify our market position, overhaul the branding of this product range, and craft the communication materials we’d need moving forward. The Engine Room team has specific expertise in this field, and we were therefore delighted
when GRAFT was ‘born’. The project success is a testament to the collaboration of these forward-thinking business and design brains.” The Engine Room’s managing director Lesley Gulliver added: “The building, construction and manufacturing sectors are perhaps not renowned for their design prowess. But this project goes to show that strategic creative thinking is about much more than just what looks good. The overhaul of this product range and the development of the GRAFT brand has helped to revolutionise Polyseam’s entire business.” Polyseam has been independently manufacturing first-class brands for the majority of the world’s leading suppliers since 1993. The company manufactures more than 150 different products, and exports to 21 countries globally.

Walkability: The 11th step Variation on a theme - following in James Speck’s footsteps: “Walkable City - How downtown can save America, one step at a time” Curiously, this experience is shared by most of us in the modern era. We are travelling the world, “expecting” to find our way, with some obvious mundane difficulties. In an ideal world, it shouldn’t really go unnoticed. But it is. In my view, walkability should incorporate better common rules for outdoors wayfinding signage so that the average person may expect better orientation even in unfamiliar urban spaces.
Lancaster - the most walkable city in Pennsylvania
alkability, a relatively new term in modern Architecture and sustainable urban design, measuring how friendly an urban area is to walking. It pertains to health, environment, and economic benefits and discusses, among other things, the presence or absence and quality of footpaths, sidewalks or other pedestrian rights-of-way, traffic and road conditions, land use patterns, building accessibility, and safety.
W
In Walkable City: How Downtown Can Save America, One Step at a Time (public library), city planner Jeff Speck argues that walkable cities would improve lives for American urban dwellers to greater extent than any attempts to create “greener” living conditions in the personal space. I found Kaid Benfield summary of Speck’s ten steps of walkability quite comprehensive for my further argument, and although I somewhat do
•52•
not agree with Benfield’s latter analysis, I think that one more important step is required. I am talking about wayfinding signage. One may argue that this is included in the entire concept of attractive building faces, traffic and road conditions or “comfort”. Yet it is often noticed only by its absence. Good wayfinding signage may encourage people to walk the city, to a greater extent than realized by many. Imagine that: You travel to a foreign country, unfamiliar with the language, trying to get from A to B using a somewhat inferior city map supplied by your hotel or local tourist office and simply cannot locate your current location and direction you need to go to. Sounds familiar? Wouldn’t better wayfinding signage (including street names, visible numbers, traffic signs, directions and building names) improve your orientation and comfort? Wouldn’t you give anything to be able to easily locate and read the signs?
Not only in America, but worldwide, inadequate wayfinding signage is often emanating from budget considerations, without realizing the human aspects of the issue. A beautiful building, complex, shopping mall or neighborhood is being built in the urban sphere - but around it and inside structures, people get lost. I challenge you to read Speck’s work with a fresh look at his previously suggested 10 good steps, thinking how wayfinding signage fits the overall scheme of things. SCHUECO’S NEW PANORAMIC SLIDING DOOR HAS ADDITIONAL DESIGN BENEFITS Leading sustainable building envelope specialist Schueco UK has just launched a new version of its highly successful ASS 77 PD panoramic door system. Designated the Schueco ASE 67 PD, the new door provides the same minimal sightlines with an outer frame that remains concealed in the building structure, resulting in a huge panoramic area of clear glass. However, it offers a number of additional benefits. First, the door can now be configured in a variety of opening combinations utilising two, three or four leaves, each up to 3.2 metres wide and 3.5 metres high. Depending upon the particular specification and the level of insulation required, the moving vent can be double- or triple-glazed. Using a simplified method of construction which makes it easier to manufacture, the Schueco ASE 67 PD door is available in two options with different outer frames. The slimmer of the two options, which has a 57 mm frame, is especially suitable for use in renovation projects; it offers a lower overall frame cost but without impacting on excellent levels
•54•
of sound insulation (up to 46 dB). A completely flat threshold is designed to eliminate the possibility of accidents, while still allowing the door to deliver watertightness to 300 Pa and wind resistance to Class C3. The deeper 90 mm option caters for even greater weather performance as it delivers watertightness to 600 Pa while maintaining the aesthetics and sound insulation of the 57 mm system. Both versions offer a very slim central mullion width of 31 mm and can accommodate glass widths ranging from 36 mm to 49.6 mm. A choice of two locking options, one in the centre and one on the side, ensure that this new system offers maximum design flexibility and a high level of security. For full details of the new Schueco ASE 67 PD panoramic sliding door, please email mkinfobox@schueco.com
Open a Schueco sliding door and you’ll know straightaway Open a Schueco sliding door and the rigidity, effortless action and solid clunk as it closes proclaim one thing: quality. Systems include doors that slide, lift-and-slide and have hidden frames that deliver outstanding panoramic views. Also available: slender-profiled windows, slimline façades and super-secure entrance doors, all with the highest levels of insulation that can be up to Passive House standard. If you still think of blinds just as blinds, chances are that you are somewhat left behind with your CPD’s. Should have tried harder ! The World has moved on; over the years when we thought of sunblinds it was simply a matter of fitting any old venetian or cloth in the window and we didn’t think any more of it, other than complaining it was still too bright, too dark or too hot in the rooms. This problem has become bigger over the years. Think about it ; floor to ceiling glass and lots of it. We let in natural daylight so we don’t have to switch on the lights, which of course is very ‘green’. We then conveniently forget we need to start cooling all that hot air and switch on the air conditioning, thereby consuming many more KiloWatts than a bit of lighting would have used. So, ‘blinds’ are out and ‘Solar Shading’ is in! The old wisdom that said internally fitted blinds was no good as the heat is already in has gone out of the windows with the advance of Solar Shading fabrics that can now achieve g-values ( Total energy penetration degrees) of less than 20%, and that is almost, within a few % , on a par with external shading but without the maintenance issues.
•56•
Solar shading has become highly technical and there really is no ‘off the shelf’ solution or a ‘one fits all’ scenario. We can go from light transmissions of 50% down to Blackout materials, albeit the most used ones these days are the 1,3,5 and 10% open fabrics, depending on whether we deal with private dwellings or office buildings. Solar Shading; there is a lot more to it than meets the eye and we will happily come to see you to explain and make your building an environmental success. Contact us at info@deleeuw-ltd.co.uk

Contemporary orangery with bespoke rooflights transforms family home This elegant extension, designed by award-winning practice Chris Dyson Architects, not only significantly increases the footprint of the client’s North London home, but also delivers a uniquely versatile living space for use all year round. The pure scale and the innovative use of glazing for the extension as well as for the new top floor dormer cannot fail to impress, and yet the architectural language reflects the calm, understated style for which Chris Dyson Architects have become acclaimed. Bespoke rooflights, supplied by Glazing Vision, not only flood the ground floor with natural light, but they also help moderate the temperatures throughout the house. The client was seeking to refresh the property by adding an extension to the rear, which would enable the existing ground floor spaces to be connected through a single flowing space, creating a welcoming and flexible environment for hosting their growing family and for entertaining guests. The top floor bedrooms were accessed via a narrow hallway where a small dormer window provided minimal daylight and restricted views of the garden. Creating a living space on this floor where the family could relax and enjoy some downtime was also part of the client’s brief to Chris Dyson Architects.
Glazed openings for harmonious integration The design for the extension was a solid and robust structure that would integrate harmoniously with the main body of the house and would serve as more than just a “sunroom”. The traditional proportions of the classic orangery have been achieved by Chris Dyson Architects through the use of precast stone columns and five glazed openings, which connect the new internal space with a raised external terraceleading to the rear garden. New internal glazed doors enable the formal dining room and the breakfast room/kitchen to be opened or closed to the main orangery space, providing flexible spatial and acoustic barriers without compromising the natural light entering the entire area. For entertaining and parties the space is ideal, allowing people to freely move between rooms and out onto the garden terrace.
Maximising daylight, moderating room temperatures The insulated walls and the energy efficient double-glazing of the orangery would serve to keep the space warm in the winter months. In the summer opening the doors would help keep the space comfortable. To further regulate the internal temperature a full width rooflight from Glazing Vision was installed, equipped with sliding elements. Chris Dyson Architects chose Glazing Vision due to the high quality of their products and their ability to create beautiful bespoke solutions. The architects worked closely with Glazing Vision’s specialist CAD designers and technicians to
•62•
design custom rooflights to meet the exacting requirements of the orangery roof as well as the new glazed dormer. Given the exceptional size of the extension roof, 3320mm x 10900mm, Glazing Vision’s factory precision-engineered a special Dual Sliding Over Fixed Rooflight, comprising 8 sections. The 2 end sections were manufactured to slide over the 6 fixed central sections, traversing in a side-to-side, rather than an up-and-down slope operation. Normally supplied in a RAL7015 slate grey to the exterior and RAL 9010 pure white to the interior, the entire framework of this super-sized Dual Sliding Over Fixed Rooflight was supplied in a
bronze finish, which was a key part of the architectural design. With such a complex rooflight, with fixed and sliding sections, a quiet and efficient operation was fundamental to the specification. Electronically controlled at the touch of a button, each of the 2 sliding sections of glazing can be retracted easily, revealing generous openings, and sky-only views. An added safety feature is the manual override should the electronic control system stall.
Innovative use of rooflight for dormer application On the top floor the existing narrow hall has been opened up and extended to create a new living space. The bespoke glazed dormer by Glazing Vision provides expansive views across the garden, and an abundance of natural light. A large Bi-parting 1-wall Box Rooflight, measuring 4850mm in the width, was set into the sloping roof. At a total height of 1700mm the rooflight also enhances the feeling of loft in this relaxation area. Supplied in 6 sections, the Glazing Vision Box Rooflight was configured such that the 2 central
sections were bi-parting, sliding over 2 adjacent fixed sections. Two additional fixed sections and 2 fixed end panels completed this fully glazed, customised dormer. In order to provide privacy from the neighbouring properties, and conform with Planning Regulations, these end panels were manufactured in satin etched glass. Once the 2 sliding sections are retracted, there is a handsome opening, giving an almost balcony-like effect, and encouraging the user to appreciate the garden vista during the day and to delight in the starry landscape at night. The Glazing Vision Bi-parting 1-wall Box rooflight helps to regulate the temperatures and the air quality throughout this upper floor, allowing copious amounts of fresh air to circulate when it is open. Rain sensors, offered by Glazing Vision as optional extras, were also installed to provide additional security should the weather suddenly turn inclement. Chris Dyson Architects are to be complimented on the sensitive integration
of a contemporary orangery in this family home as well as on the bold extension of the top floor. Form and function are in perfect harmony and the Glazing Vision rooflights will ensure that there is an everchanging canopy to the spaces below!
