Rinnai Tackles Rugby League Sponsorship With Widnes Vikings
Rinnai Tackles Rugby Sponsorship With Widnes Rinnai, the UK’s leading manufacturing supplier of commercial hot water heating systems, has a major sports sponsorship with one of Rugby Leagues most historic clubs - Widnes Vikings.
Comments Chris Goggin, “We are absolutely delighted to take a very active sponsorship with Widnes Vikings. We share a common belief in approach and values of excellence, innovation and responsibility to the wider community. “Rinnai is a worldwide brand name in its field and has taken some major global sponsorships – including the Queensland Reds, The World Club World Cup event held January this year in Tokyo, the World Ice Skating Championships and the US Nascar competition held in Daytona, Las Vegas and other major American venues. “The Widnes Vikings are also local to our own UK headquarters so it is all an excellent fit. Installers, specifiers and end users’ installers have the most practical and economically viable solution for all domestic and commercial hot water heating and delivery needs in Rinnai’s comprehensive range of energy efficient A rated, electronically controlled continuous flow gas fired units and systems.
And a big part of that sponsorship is on two community-based programs called “Rinnai match day experiences”. This is targeted at enabling young kids to play rugby tournaments before Super League matches are played or televised. “Getting kids into sport is what we want to achieve together with Widnes Vikings,” says Rinnai Operations chief Chris Goggin. “The first of these took place recently and had more than 100 kids playing, and 250 people involved in all – the program is advertised not only in our local area but within the areas of the opposition team. This means that the Rinnai match-day experience is promoted across the country.
“The second element of Rinnai’s commitment to the community through Widnes Vikings is to help people within our local area that are having a hard time at present – we give them a trip to meet their favourite players, a behind-thescenes look at the facilities, meet the Sky Sports team and have matchday passes with hospitality. Just recently it was the turn of local lad Robert, who was recently diagnosed with motor neurone disease. The sponsorship also takes the form of the Rinnai logo and brand name on the back of the playing shorts. This will be the second season both parties have taken this unconventional but innovative style of sports sponsorship.
The natural gas or LPG water heaters guarantee a limitless supply of accurately temperature controlled safe and useable hot water, time after time after time to any type or size of site or application. The Rinnai range delivers energy saving performance and low greenhouse emissions through new low NOx burner technology. All units and systems can be installed as stand-alone or manifolded to provide unlimited hot water for the largest of all commercial sites such as hotels, busy gyms, high rise offices etc. Water temperature is and can be pre-set through easy-to-use built in digital controls, eliminating the
League Vikings risk of scalding and potentially eradicating the need for thermostatic mixing valves. Water can be used simultaneously at several points of delivery with no loss of heat. The newly updated Rinnai Infinity range is designed for use directly off the mains, with no need for large, ungainly and energy inefficient storage vessels. For example, Rinnai’s Infinity 16i continuous flow water heater is designed to meet the hot water needs of domestic and light commercial applications. The Infinity 16i, weighing just 18kg and measuring less than 675mm (H) x 139mm (W), has a delivery capacity of 15.2 litres per minute, at a temperature rise of 25°. The larger Rinnai 26i continuous flow water heater is one of the company’s best-selling internal water heaters worldwide and has a flow rate of 19.6 litres/min, raised at 33°C. Rinnai Heavy Duty water heaters are high efficiency gas continuous flow water heaters with outputs up to 69kW. The Rinnai Heavy Duty HD50i Internal water heater is a wall hung, gas fired, continuous flow water heater capable of producing hot water at 756 litres per hour at a 50°C rise. The
HD50i has a 125mm concentric flue which can be extended up to 15m, less 1m per 45° bend. Compact and reliable, the HD50i operates between 1-10 bar pressure, which is suitable for mains and systems with boost pumps. Incoming water temperatures of up to 60°C are accepted, making the HD50i suitable for secondary return systems. Water can be delivered at high volume with minimum gas consumption. All models have full electronic ignition with no pilot light and operate on demand only, consuming no gas when not in use. All Rinnai internal HDC condensing continuous flow water heaters, are room-sealed, power flue appliances while the external weatherproof models have forced exhaust which enables them to be compact, saving both floor and wall space.
Rinnai’s unique condensing technology incorporates two heat exchangers to achieve optimum water heating generated from every cubic metre of Natural Gas or LPG. The condensing process delivers up to 95% thermal efficiency, which translates to significant energy savings when compared to standard on-demand water heaters or conventional stored systems. Rinnai continuous flow hot water systems deliver on all levels in a cost effective and practical manner. Easy to install and operate the units provide a flexible and energy efficient solution for domestic applications and for all sectors of business and industry. Monika Slowikowska to speak at Women in Construction Summit Golden Houses Developments director reflects on the path to success after an award-winning 2017 Monika Slowikowska, who is described as ‘one of the most prolific female leaders in the construction industry’, has been announced as one of the speakers at the forthcoming Women in Construction Summit. This news comes at a timely and important moment that celebrates women’s achievements in the UK. December 2017 marked 100 years since the first general election in which women voted in the UK. The summit also takes place ahead of International Women’s Day, March 8, 2018; a day which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. Taking place on Tuesday, March 6 at the 8 Northumberland Avenue venue, close to the River Thames in London’s iconic West End district, the Women in Construction Summit seeks to level the playing field, promoting women in the industry and driving gender equality to the top of the sector’s agenda. The speech comes at a time of reflection for Monika Slowikowska and her Golden House Developments company, after a sixth successful year of operations. In that time the company has picked up two prizes in the London Construction Awards, with Monika winning the Women in Construction Award and Golden House Developments triumphing in the London Build Excellence Award category. Monika has underlined the fact that the industry event comes at a time when women in construction are very much in the spotlight. She has highlighted the importance of recognising that while the construction sector employs as many as 2.1 million people, women comprise only 11% of the workforce, and are paid 12% less than men carrying out the same roles as them, according to research. Monika said: “2017 was an unsurpassed, awardwinning year for Golden House Developments, and we are looking forward to an even more fruitful year in 2018. We have reached our current position by raising the bar in the areas of design, construction and quality – all of which we recognise as being vital to our clients. I am a great believer that you should never forget who you are and where you come from, and I hope that by giving my own perspective at the Women in Construction Summit, I can offer some insight to my female colleagues in our industry.”

Nottingham council to favour small firms for contracts Nottingham City Council is vowing to award more work to smaller contractors in the wake of Carillion’s collapse. The council’s Procurement Strategy for 2018-23 promises hundreds of millions of pounds worth of work for local firms. City Council Deputy Leader, Councillor Graham Chapman, said: “We want to support small and medium size firms which are the lifeblood of the local economy. “We have more scope to do this than councils which have been outsourcing the provision of services wholesale to a single giant supplier. “As the collapse of Carillion has shown, there are huge risks to this approach.” The new Procurement Strategy will give smaller businesses more chance competing with larger rivals by breaking down bigger contracts into smaller ones where possible.
Willmott Dixon set for £9m Dundee sports and library job Wilmott Dixon looks set to take a £9m contract to build a new community facility in Dundee. ‘REVOLUTIONARY CONCEPT’ DELIVERS BENEFICIAL LIFETIME SOLUTION BAM Construction is utilising a revolutionary concept to simplify delivery of effective ventilation.
With a series of new-build and refurbishments in the education sector, the company has chosen Gilberts’ Mistrale Fusion System (MFS) as a ‘one-stop shop’ solution for the ventilation strategies.
building via façade, window or roof. Further, Gilberts’ in-house design, R&D and engineering capability means, if required, bespoke solutions can be detailed for the core system.
Explained BAM Construction senior project services engineer Gavin Wilcox, “Natural ventilation is the preferred option under EFA guidance. Our design team proposed Gilberts’ MFS as a commercially viable alternative to other schemes, providing intake and extract in one ‘stand-alone’ box. The flexibility to match the MFS units to a particular project’s specific properties was a further determining factor. The MFS concept means fewer units, so reduced installation, reduced interfacing, reduced maintenanceall beneficial to the lifecycle costs of the building.”
Thus, at the Elliott Hudson College in Leeds, BAM has used 2no standard MFS128 and 21no. high capacity MFS256 units with heating coils, integrated into the classroom windows, with Gilberts’ window-mounted up/down louvre on the external facade. To ensure an airtight fit, Gilberts specially engineered a duct extension/ transition piece to accommodate the building’s existing façade which is angled 6° from the vertical. In addition, 10no MFS-V roof-mounted units with heat coils, six for the main hall, and two each for the fitness studio and drama studio respectively have been installed.
Gilberts’ MFS was the first primarily natural ventilation solution to evolve into a dynamic hybrid, by minimising heat loss via a low power fan and mixing damper rather than the conventional heat exchanger. It has continued its innovation, being the only such system that can be easily tailored to the specific project requirements. Its modular design enables airflow, temperature, CO2, pollutants to be precisely matched to specification, whether integrated into the
The standard MFS is supplied as a 128 variant: just two of these single-sided units will achieve the appropriate Building Bulletin ventilation requirements of 8l/sec/ person for a standard 32 person classroom, allowing for one unit to be positioned at each end of the room. The MFS256 was developed as a high capacity solution, to provide the Regulatory ventilation requirement where only one unit could be integrated into the
façade. Gilberts’ MFS-V is a vertical version, for roof-mounting. Specification of a heat coil is an option, which, Gilberts maintains, can potentially eliminate the need for supplementary heating, radiators, within the room. Further options include a 550 boost, for rooms subjected to greater potential pollution, heat gain (eg science laboratories), and filter boxes for locations with heavy outside air pollution. “There’s nothing else like it on the market,” says Gilberts’ Technical Director Roy Jones. “BAM Construction is just one of many companies appreciating how the concept delivers a commercially viable, sustainable alternative to the conventional means of ventilating a building.” Founded 50+ years ago, privately owned Gilberts is unique in having its own, on-site (85,000ft2) manufacturing facility, producing engineered solutions, with an in-house test centre. Technical expertise is supported by full in-house testing, and CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulation capability.

Keen to protect all its HVAC equipment from airborne debris and to maintain its efficiency, the Central Middlesex Hospital sought a solution for all its 28 locations adjacent to London’s A40. RABScreen, the external air intake screen specialists, together with distributor GVS Filtration and their client Bouygues put forward a successful bid in a competitive tender and the team then subsequently fully surveyed all the hospital locations. As a hospital project, much of the work had to be completed at weekends, and there were several problems which needed to be addressed: ten of the supply ducts were drawing air from high level louvres; access required scaffolding which would make on-going maintenance very difficult; and internal duct access was also difficult. The hospital maintenance team was looking for a mesh
screen that could be inserted into existing ductwork then simply withdrawn for future maintenance. For RABScreen director Richard Betts, with his 25 years’ experience in the building services industry, this was not a problem. By working with one of its partner companies, AJM Ventilation, an exceptional ductwork installer, the team were able to modify the ductwork to receive new filter boxes. The RABScreen solution was installed within the supply filter box to make screen insertion easier. Now the local airborne debris created by London’s A40 and the surrounding industrial area is kept away from the disposable filters increasing their lifespan by as much as 60%. This front line protection allowed the introduction of the highly efficient GVS BACTICELL which sits behind the RABScreen’s mesh material, the GVS BACTICELL improves efficiency and copes with high pressure differentials between changes. These BACTICELL screens will reduce replacement costs dramatically with the next filter change not expected until August 2019.
Nick Shackleton, Director at GVS Filtration commented, “It was a great solution for the customer. All of the AHU plant is now protected by the washable RABScreen and the long lasting BACTICELL. AJM Ventilation’s expertise in ductwork meant that the contract was fulfilled on time and within budget”. Further information is available from RABScreen on 01635 248633 by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or by visiting the company’s website at www.rabscreen.com

HOME OF THE FUTURE POWERED BY INNOVATIVE NORTH WEST FIRM ELe IS UNVEILED A low-energy, eco-friendly, home of the future has been unveiled by West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper at the headquarters of Extreme Low Energy (ELe) in Skelmersdale. in their electricity bills whilst the housing association benefits in reduced maintenance costs. “We believe that this is a template for the future and are currently discussing the implementation of this technology in planned projects for modular home development across the UK.” The modular home, which opens onto a combined kitchen and lounge, with a rear double bedroom and en-suite shower room, is powered by solar panels which discharge the electricity to a battery storage system. The firm, which recently won the Energy Institute Innovation Award for its ground-breaking low-energy technologies, has installed a replica modular home in the reception area of its new offices, fully equipped and powered by ELe systems, and built by sustainable building company Simply Modular Ltd. The company’s award-winning technologies use Ethernet cables to power a whole range of domestic and commercial appliances using DC-power, having identified huge energy and carbon savings that can be made by eliminating the AC/DC conversion. In addition to providing energy savings, users of the system can monitor their consumption data, so a housing association, for example, could monitor whether a
dwelling is over occupied or under occupied, along with measuring the humidity and temperature to prevent damp, mould and condensation in their tenants’ homes. The system can even monitor whether vulnerable tenants are going about their daily routines, thereby giving potential carers early warning if there is something amiss. Mark Buchanan, founder and technical director of ELe, said: “Our ELe system is designed to be mass produced and easily installed, helping reduce fuel poverty and provide housing associations with data enabling them to monitor the energy performance of their properties and aid in the cost of maintaining them. “The tenant benefits from reductions
All lighting, heating and integrated appliances in the property are powered by ELe’s award-winning systems which can save the user up to 70% in terms of energy use, reducing monthly bills and helping the environment. West Lancashire MP, Rosie Cooper, said: “I’m proud that such pioneering innovation is being developed here in West Lancashire. “There’s a real housing problem across the UK and it’s important that ideas, like those being put forward by ELe, are considered as a possible solution to the housing crisis we face.” For more details about ELe, visit their website: www.extremelowenergy.com, email: email@example.com, or follow on Twitter: @ExtremeLowEnerg

Super Slim-line Fantile Launched by AET Flexible Space AET Flexible Space, leading provider of underfloor air conditioning systems has just released the latest version of their market leading recessed fan air terminal, or Fantile. The new super slim-line TU350 Fantile is similar to the existing TUS Fantile, with an equivalent unit height of just 150mm, but the new model has superior performance, achieving higher airflow capacity with reduced noise levels. Underfloor air conditioning is commonly used in office environments, utilising the plenum beneath a raised floor as the ventilation zone. Fully conditioned air is supplied into the floor plenum by zonal downflow units (CAMs), and then supplied into the workspace via the recessed fan terminal units, known as a Fantile due to its interchangeability with a 600mm2 floor tile. The Fantile units feature integrated controllers where users can personally adjust fan speed and temperature to suit their own comfort. Access to the controller is via a specially designed hatch within the grille that covers the recessed Fantile, or via a newly developed smartphone app. The slim-line Fantile was specially designed for developers seeking to maximise revenue. By removing services from the ceiling void and utilising the space beneath the raised floor, height savings of around 450-600 mm can be achieved. This space saving across an entire
development can potentially allow additional floors, increasing net lettable space and therefore increased revenue. Alternatively, height restricted developments can increase floor to ceiling heights to BCO recommended standards by reclaiming this wasted space in the ceiling zone, thereby increasing rentable value considerably when compared with ceiling based systems. Based on standard design criteria of an underfloor pressure of 15-20 Pa and 50% fan speed, the TU350 super slim-line Fantile can achieve airflow performance of 300m3/h at NR 37, below the BCO recommendation of NR 38. The unit is designed to fit into a conventional lay in grid floor and will also fit into a screw down steel floor with a new specially developed adapter kit.

Comar 7P.i CDE Commercial Door New Comar 7P.i CDE Commercial Door Electronic Lock with Access Control Integration Secured by Design Licenced Product
omar Architectural Aluminium Systems, part of TPG - The Parkside Group Limited, announce the launch of Comar 7P.i CDE, a Commercial Swing Door with Electronic Locking, that now holds a Secured By Design Licence. The Comar 7P.i CDE is an electronic lock option for the thermally broken commercial swing door range, which offers access control integration for both single and double leaf door sets. Secured by Design Homes 2016 requires that occupants, of a residential building with 10 or more distinct dwellings, must be able to remotely control the main entrance door from their apartment to allow access to known visitors. The Comar 7P.i CDE is ideal for multi-dwelling apartment applications, where the electronic lock suites in with most
access control panels and includes panic exit hardware options. The solution can also be used in all matter of public buildings where occupant safety is required, such as Health, Education and other Public Buildings. Comar specifiers and fabricators can be reassured by Comar 7P.i CDE’s secure, flexible design options. Achieving PAS 24:2016 in double leaf swing doors is particularly challenging to pass on a test, as the doors resist a 4.5kN loading as well as a manual attack tests. Double leaf doors are often called for on residential buildings as they allow facilities teams and occupants ease of access for bulky objects such as furniture, yet still provide uncompromised security and convenience for day to day access where only a single leaf is
commonly used, the Comar 7P.i CDE provides this solution. Comar 7P.i CDE has been added to Comar’s BSi’s Kitemark for Enhanced Security which incorporates testing to BS 6375 Parts 1, 2 and 3, for a high traffic entrance door this means that the Comar 7Pi CDE has been tested and certified to 50,000 open and closing cycles, which is a requirement of the Secured by Design License. The Comar 7P.i CDE lock uses magnetic triggers, located in the keeps, tripping the sprung loaded locking points, which snap ‘locked’ almost instantly when the door is closed. This provides a ‘fail locked’ environment that immediately protects a vulnerable resident returning home, even in the event of a power failure or vandalism.
Not only does the Comar 7P.i CDE integrate with access control systems, it also has been tested with the Fuhr’s Panic Exit crash bar, helping designers meet fire safety demands while providing PAS 24:2016 level of security and high traffic resilience. Comar’s lever door handles also integrate with the lock, their operation manually reloading the sprung mechanical locking points. Together with the magnet triggered instant locking, which helps prevent criminals following occupants into their building, the Comar 7P.i CDE offers unparalleled functionality. Comar 7P.i CDE has a comprehensive range of accessories, available direct from Comar, including a remotecontrol key fob, a wireless push pad and hard-wired switches. The Comar 7P.i CDE also presents advantages in fabrication, including the need for only four machined ‘pockets’ in the lock and keep stiles, plus a one piece lock, thereby speeding up assembly times and reducing workshop errors. A single cable provides the lock with power and signal simplifying the routing in the frames. To cater for structural tolerances on site, adjustable raised keeps are available to ensure the locks engage correctly. The Comar 7P.i CDE door solution is available today via our Secured by Design Group Scheme of approved fabricators. Our Project Managers will help designers best specify the most appropriate options for their projects, while our highly responsive Technical Support Team are always on hand to give in detail support. Richard has been with TPG for 15 years and is excited to take the leading hardware brand to even greater heights. Richard commented that “Everyone knows the top performer the Axim TC Series of Concealed Closers, however, I am not sure that everyone is aware of how extensive the Axim product range is. The Axim PR Series Panic Exit range is comprehensive, and the Axim Panic Exit Locking Handle is one of the most high-quality products I have seen which fits across the entire range.” The Axim branded product range includes Emergency and Panic Exit Devices that are certified to BS EN 179 and BS EN 1125, a range of handles including D-handles, Lever Handles, Pad Handles, Pull Handles and Tube Handles, Floor Springs which can take a door weight of up to 150Kg, Locks including Mortice, Dead Latch, Extension Flush Bolts for security slave doors. The TC 9900 is a universal closer which is ideal for repair and maintenance and where
closers have failed, the TC9900 offers a fast solution without the need for costly repairs. Richard continues “Axim is known very well in the aluminium door industry, however the Surface Mounted Door Closer, the Axim FC Series, offers a solution for both aluminium and timber doors, in fact it even comes as standard with fixings to suit both materials. This means that installers and distributors can minimise the closers they carry, and the Axim FC-1000 Series has been tested for Fire Rating to BS 476-22 1987.” Offering innovative solutions has been at the fore of Axim and launching new products such as the Axim ES-2100 Electric Strike a remote access product that offers installers a reduction in installation and maintenance time. The Axim LK-2100 Reversible Deadlatch offers a non-handed solution which means that installers and distributors can reduce their stock-holding by only stocking one Deadlatch instead of two. Last year Axim had a face-lift with a new revamped logo, which joined
the new website and Technical Literature which offers extensive technical, specification and installation information with speedy navigation to get you to the place you need to be. Axim designs and supplies a comprehensive in-stock range of transom closers, panic exit devices, electric strikes, deadlatches, surface mounted door closers, floor-springs, flush-bolts, letter-plates, locks and handles through a pan-European distributor supply chain. 2018 looks bright for VEKA
With investment of £5M forecast for 2018, the industry-leading systems supplier looks well placed to help customers face the challenges ahead. MD Dave Jones tells us how VEKA plans to ‘brighten up’ a relatively flat market with a boost to its lamination offering.
ere at VEKA, we are looking forward to the year ahead and the programme of developments we have planned. While we remain realistic about 2018’s potential challenges, we know that - without investment - a company and its customers would ‘stand still’, and that is not something we are content to do. In order to continue supporting our customers with the highest levels of service, and to remain at the very forefront of the industry, we are looking to invest around £5M in VEKA Group facilities, plant and technology.
The main focus of investment will be our ever-growing lamination department.
Over the years, VEKA has been celebrated for ‘leading the way’ in areas such as customer support, sustainability, security and energy efficiency. For example; with the industry’s first window rated ‘A’ for efficiency, first window rated ‘A’ for noise reduction, first BSI Kitemarkaccredited bi-fold door, first dedicated PVC-U recycling plant and first BFRC-certified WER calculator. However, we have said, for a number of years, that homeowners and specifiers should be able to ‘expect’ the highest levels of quality and efficiency and make their choices based on more discretionary factors, such as style and colour. We’ve discussed this in a number of editorial features over the years, and I know this is a sentiment now echoed around the industry.
March 2018 Doors, Windows & Architectural Hardware
In response to demand for heritage-style windows, we developed our coveted Vertical Slider and FlushSash systems and as the demand for coloured frames increased, we unveiled our Variations collection of colours and realistic woodgrains. We have seen huge growth in this area of the business in recent years and, currently, over 33% of VEKA Group sales are foiled product. We are in the process of buying an adjacent building to VEKA’s HQ which will allow the current 380,000 sq ft site site to expand by a further 40,000 sq ft and will enable us to potentially increase lamination capacity by a further 50%. As well as the new building, we are investing in a new, flexible lamination line, allowing us to offer the most efficient service on the inevitable small runs and quirkier colour choices. Not only that, but the department will see the addition of another standard lamination line, a new colour changing head and a heat tunnel, alongside all our existing high spec foiling equipment. The aim with this investment – as always – is to ensure that our customers are best placed to meet the demands of a challenging market. It’s not only about increasing the potential volume of our output, but supporting customers with flexibility and efficient service. We want to offer real, straightforward benefits that will reflect on their own business and the level of
service they are able to offer to customers, whether that’s homeowners or commercial specifiers etc. 2018 also sees VEKA Group making plans for further improvements to our specialist maintenance and tooling department. Expanding our in-house maintenance department means that we can respond immediately and capably to any potential problems with our machinery (however unlikely we hope they are!) to ensure there is no disruption to the supply chain. 2018’s planned spend of £5M continues a pattern of investment, including - for example - £400K last year allocated to energy efficiency upgrades for the plant. Improved lighting, heating and high bay racking meant that our warehouse facility achieved a 25% reduction in electricity consumption in 2017. While we’re busy with our investment plans here in Burnley, our sister company VEKA Recycling has also announced the fantastic news that it will be investing £8M into constructing one of the most advanced PVC-U recycling plants in Europe, right here in the UK! In the face of a relatively flat market, I am very proud to be part of a Group that will continue to invest – through good years and bad - in order to see our partners succeed. Some of our customers have been with us for more than 30 years, and it’s our job to show them that we will be here for them for the next 30 years, and the 30 after that …

WOMAN TRANSFORMS HOME W LIFT IN THE LARDER
woman from Suffolk who has lived at the same house for more than 50 years, is staying put after installing a Stiltz Home Lift in the kitchen larder to help her get upstairs. Jane Seppings, 80, has arthritis in both knees and had a pacemaker fitted earlier this year, so using the stairs was becoming more and more challenging. But moving from the 17th century fourbedroom farmhouse she has lived in since 1965 was not an option as Jane says the home in Weston near Beecles is ‘the perfect house’. So the decision to adapt her home with a Stiltz Home Lift – which requires no hydraulics or supporting walls and plugs straight into a normal 13amp power socket with the lift travelling on self-supporting rails - was an easy one. “I’ve lived in this house for 52 years and I cannot imagine living anywhere else,” said Jane. “It’s the perfect house and I love it. Every room is a good size. The house has had lots of building work done to it over the years and every room is a good size. “The stairs were becoming more difficult because of my arthritis and I certainly had no intention of moving house or downsizing to a bungalow, so I thought it would be a good idea to get something in place which would make life easier. “I wasn’t confident about getting on and off a stairlift which sits on the stairwell, so I thought why not go for one of these futuristic Stiltz home lifts instead? It’s a very clever idea and incredibly simple as it plugs straight into the wall. I didn’t want the domestic lift on display though so decided to conceal it in the larder! “It meant I had to move all the food out but it is three-foot wide and it could be hidden from view in there behind the door. You wouldn’t even know it was there. Stiltz said no problem and installed the home lift in
the larder as requested and it has made it much easier for me to move around my home. The home lift travels up to a spare room which I use as a utility room for clothes so it is also extremely useful for carrying up baskets of washing!” Jane moved into Hall Farm in 1965 which dates back to the early 1600s, with her husband, who sadly passed away 10 years ago. He worked on the farm, where at one time they had pigs and geese. During the 80s and 90s, the couple also ran a successful dried flowers business called Winter Floral, with its own shop which is attached to farmland. Customers at the time included upmarket department stores Liberty of London and John Lewis. The shop was ultimately sold off and is now Urban Jungle Plant Nursery and Café which sells exotic and unusual plants in a unique garden setting. The animals have all gone too and the buildings have been renovated and turned into rented offices for small businesses. At one time, the Seppings’ also used to raise money for charity by opening their exceptional garden to the public as part of the National Garden Scheme. Since 1927, the scheme has been inviting garden owners to open their gardens to the public for good causes for around the same cost as a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Over the last 90 years, it has donated £50 million to charities across the UK. Jane said: “My husband used to work very hard
on the farm. We had p the buildings have all b neat office units. We h business selling dried fl it very much. Once we flowers to Liberty of Lo just flooded in.
“We did the National G around 10 years and it experience. We worked garden so it was great the public and raise m the same time. There i memories here for me want to leave.”

Remmers Repair Bawdsey Radar Station Built in 1938 and protected by Concrete Blast Walls, Bawdsey Radar Station was the world’s first operational radar station. The walls had decayed steadily since the building was vacated in 1991, leaving the top layer of reinforcement exposed to the elements.
2/2016 12:47 Page 1
Being a Heritage site, traditional concrete repair techniques were not allowed. Working in partnership, Remmers and Concrete Renovations Ltd devised a way to repair the walls by using Remmers restoration materials. Remmers coloured mortars were used to repair and simulate the colour of the original concrete alongside
Remmers migrating corrosion inhibitor and impregnation cream as part of the 25-year maintenance plan. The project has recently received a prestigious Award of Merit, issued by the International Concrete Repair Institute at the convention in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr Schutz PU Sealer
Making Longer Lasting Flooring German floor care company, Dr. Schutz, has the perfect product – PU Sealer – to give flooring a lasting finish, as well as added protection, in areas including sports halls, offices, hospitals and schools. The water based, eco-friendly PUSealer can be applied to most types of flooring, including vinyl, tiled and epoxy resin. The product adds approximately 40 microns of protective thickness to floors, as well as extending the lifespan by up to six times and gives a lasting clear matt finish. Areas which are prone to high traffic, for example shopping centres and sports halls, tend to wear very quickly, and when they don’t have a hard wearing product applied, this could cost time and money to fix problems which could occur. By applying the PUSealer, flooring can be kept in a great condition for many years. The Dr. Schutz PU Sealer range also includes PU Antislip and PU Anticolor. Andura Specified Again for Regency House Exterior When it came to the exterior redecoration of Regency House in Royal Leamington Spa, the freeholders of the building had no hesitation in specifying Andura Coatings once again as the external finish. 40
March 2018 Case Study long experience of quality work. The external decorating of the 1970s block of 60 apartments was completed in a three month period ending in September 2017. To limit disruption to the site, the contracting firm used three cherry pickers instead of scaffolding which proved to be much more flexible when applying the finish all around the building. The whole building was power washed first to remove any grime and dirt then all the windows were masked with plastic sheets before application of the Andura Pro-Flex coating. Some 1600 litres of ProFlex was used to cover 3220 sq.m. of exterior wall. Mark Stedeford, one of the directors of John Stedeford & Sons commented, “We thought that the Andura product was excellent, it was a solid product and easy to apply, we will definitely use Andura’s coatings again.”
hen it came to the exterior redecoration of Regency House in Royal Leamington Spa, the freeholders of the building had no hesitation in specifying Andura Coatings once again as the external finish. The Andura Pro-Flex high performance decorative coating lived up to its promise of complete durability over the ten year period since it was first applied on the building in 2005. Unlike many other exterior finishes, the Andura Pro-Flex technology is not only water and dirt resistant, but also has elastomeric properties giving excellent resistance to any subsequent cracks in the substrate. Peter James, Director and Company Secretary of the Regency House Residents Association is delighted with the Pro-Flex product which was used for the second time on the building towards the end of last year, “Everyone has been wholly satisfied with the Andura coating and we unanimously agreed that we should specify Andura
once again. The Pro-Flex coating bonds to the surface rather than sitting on it and is able to accommodate the different expansions and contractions evident in the building which is a mix of solid concrete, brickwork and blockwork. We have been very impressed with the longevity of the product together with Andura’s willingness to come to site to discuss our needs.” When the earlier redecoration was undertaken, the Regency House Residents Association appointed a project management firm to oversee the project and assess various different coatings for performance over a six month period. As a result, the Andura coating was specified. For the redecoration of the building last year, the Andura coating was the automatic choice given its performance over ten years and the same project management company was engaged for tendering of the contracting work. Specialist contractors, John Stedeford & Sons, were successful in winning the tender based on their submission and their
Andura’s Pro-Flex technology provides excellent long-term protection and decoration for buildings. The elastomeric properties of Pro-Flex technology give excellent resistance to subsequent cracks in the substrate. Using the very latest advances in coatings technology, Andura has now developed ProFlex Ultimate which is specially formulated to combine all the benefits of Pro-Flex technology with improved breathability, water and dirt resistance for a harder wearing, longer lasting and beautiful finish to keep exterior walls in top condition. Pro-Flex is classified as ‘highly breathable’ and ‘highly water resistant’ as tested in accordance with German (DIN), European (EN) and International (ISO) standards. The addition of silicon resin and silane to Pro-Flex considerably improves resistance to dirt pickup. Further information on ProFlex coatings is available from Andura on 01869 240374 by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or by visiting the company’s website at www.andura.com

RUSSELLS HELPS TO CEMENT SOCIAL HOUSING PLANS IN SCOTLAND A £12m social housing project in Scotland has become the latest development to benefit from Russell Roof Tiles’ sustainable concrete roof tiles.
The 5.6-hectare scheme in Methil Brae, Fife is one of Fife Council’s largest social housing programmes, providing 101 high quality homes for rent. At a time when the Scottish Government has promised to deliver 50,000 affordable homes by 2021 , the scheme has been instrumental in helping to meet these targets and the much-needed local housing requirements. Comprising of a mixture of one to five-bedroom
properties, including semidetached units, bungalows and cottage flats, the scheme saw Fife Council work with Kingdom Housing Association and contractors Robertson Partnership Homes to deliver the ambitious scheme. Robertson Partnership Homes specified Russell Roof Tiles, manufactured at its local Lockerbie factory, to deliver 100,000 of its Grampian concrete tiles in Anthracite and Terracotta. The Grampian tiles are a standard flat interlocking roof tile, combining the traditional yet
stylish appearance of slate or clay with the security of an interlocking design and the economy of concrete. Concrete roof tiles are a long life, durable product and require minimal maintenance once installed – a feature which means lower maintenance and repair costs. The versatility of concrete allows for an authentic clay or slate effect roof tile with the benefits of offering greater strength. Compared to traditional clay roof tiles, concrete tile manufacturing requires considerably less

energy usage during production and Russell Roof Tiles’ modern manufacturing methods deliver a technically consistent and quality product. With considerable experience in social housing developments, Russell Roof Tiles’ reliable costeffective service has given Robertson Partnership Homes confidence and assurance that they will continue to receive a quality product at the right price throughout Scotland. Andrew Hayward, Managing Director at Russell Roof Tiles said: “As the demand for social
housing continues to increase in Scotland, we are seeing an increasing number of contractors and specifiers request our sustainable and cost-effective concrete tiles.
“These supply chain relationships have supported us in creating high quality and durable homes across our developments in Scotland which residents will be able to enjoy for many years to come.”
“It is great that we were able to provide our Grampian Tiles on such a large and significant project, that will benefit residents in Fife for many years to come.”
Russell Roof Tiles is a leading independent roof tile manufacturer providing products for leading UK house builders and high-profile social housing and commercial projects, where sustainability and eco-credentials are of the utmost priority.
Stewart Shearer, Managing Director of Robertson Partnership Homes, said: “Robertson Group has a robust preferred supply chain, in which Russell Roof Tiles is a valued partner.

Midland Fixings Launches its 2018 Fundraising Programme MIDLAND FIXINGS, the building services and products supplier, is set for a busy year with staff spearheading a new fundraising programme.
In 2017 alone, the company, which is headquartered in Beeston, Nottingham and operates throughout the UK, donated a total of £35,000 to various different charities. This year, Midland Fixings is keen to build on that success with its employees taking part in new fundraising challenges every two months in support of several local and national charities carefully chosen by people within the business. Treetops Hospice Care, Nottingham Framework, Cancer Research UK and Guide Dogs for the Blind are just some of the charities that will receive much-needed donations.
To kick off the fundraising, six brave members of staff will be taking on
a Man vs. Food challenge in aid of Alzheimer’s Research UK on Friday 9 February, which will involve seeing who can eat the most in 60 seconds. A team of keen cyclists will then pedal the Pennines in a 350km cycle challenge on 7 and 8 March to raise all-important funds for Breast Cancer Care. Adrian Fowler, managing director of Midland Fixings, said: “As a familyowned business, we feel it’s important to promote a sense of community within the company and a corporate social responsibility programme is a great way to bring people together. NatraTex, BituChem’s leading material, has been used to create footpaths, roads and driveways in many residential areas, including a recent development in Cholsey, Oxfordshire. NatraTex, BituChem’s leading material, has been used to create footpaths, roads and driveways in many residential areas, including a recent development in Cholsey, Oxfordshire. The new housing estate, launching this winter, is an exclusive development of two, three and four bedroom houses built by Linden Homes at Meadow View just one mile from Cholsey village. To complement the beautiful surroundings, BituChem’s NatraTex Cotswold was specified for the roads and pedestrian footpaths. NatraTex 10mm Cotswold was applied to create attractive and hard-wearing new roads and pathways around the estate. The material works with the colours of the newly built houses and also provides a smooth durable surface for residents. NatraTex Cotswold is hard-wearing and versatile and offers the same durable, high-performance qualities
as traditional asphalt technology. The material has been designed to withstand the everyday use from pedestrians and light vehicles and is created using a specialist clear synthetic binder and naturallyoccurring, coloured aggregates to offer a fully compact finish. Once applied, NatraTex is virtually maintenance-free and maintains its colour for a long-lasting finish. The smooth surface is also much safer than other alternatives as it is resistant to cracks and potholes preventing any trip hazards. NatraTex is also available in a variety of colours and finishes, including gravel and red, under the NatraTex Colour range. NatraTex is not a resin bound or bonded product, it is an asphalt surface course with similar characteristics to conventional macadam and installed at the same depth and same sub layers (base and binder course). NatraTex Cotswold is manufactured and supplied to surfacing contractors.
This results in a cost-effective and multipurpose surfacing material which is perfect for highways, footpaths, cycleways, playgrounds or domestic use. NatraTex can be used for new construction, overlays or regeneration projects and is very environmentally friendly. It is fast and easy to install, making it a particularly popular choice for housing developments and projects with limited timescales. BituChem has developed a NatraTex heavy duty option for areas that form a part of a main road or see increased vehicle activity and also NatraTex ColdLay, a quick repair product for use in small areas such as bollard replacements or small utility reinstatements.
Further information is available from NatraTex on 01594 826768 or 07584 311266, by emailing: email@example.com or by visiting the company’s website at www.natratex.co.uk
