There is still hope... Malta was once a pretty Mediterranean Island; beautiful limestone buildings, baroque and prominent in their stature displaying status and grandeur followed by terraces of townhouses influenced by the Victorian era during the reign of the British in Malta. Our ancient cities fortified and magnificent, our villages quaint and rural; this is a Malta we all dream of. We have not valued our architectural heritage and we have not respected, nor improved upon the foundations of our forefathers, but there is still hope! Over the past fifty years, a handful of expressionist architecture of art deco and modernist buildings were erected (Balluta Buildings, Villa Carmel and a few others); post-modernist architecture almost non-existent made way to the 1980's use of bricks and concrete for our tasteless forms of “buildings’. Our urban centres today see little use of our traditional building material, limestone. Following the lack of regulation and planning in the 80’s, interventions where made to buildings which closed open courtyards, destroyed historic architectural features, de-listed scheduled properties and paved the way for our long and narrow apartment buildings that gave little importance to the comforts of modern day living. Over the past thirty years we have begun to be more mindful of our built environment with the planning laws implemented in the 90’s. However, following a number of economic upturns, a growth in population and a constant strive to improve our standards of living, we viewed our country as a blank canvas whereby the need for financial return surpassed the need for quality of space.

Riddled with challenges in title and many historic buildings of value that have been segregated over the years, today it is a city we are proud of. This once neglected urban core has been heavily invested in and restored by both local and international stakeholders who believe that our history and architectural heritage is one of our strongest selling points. The push for Valletta extended out to the three cities and spilled over into Floriana. I will guarantee that this gentrification, will continue to extend into Hamrun (still unspoilt with new development, in most parts) and create further opportunity for business and above all a beautiful city scape.
