A Community with three wishes One of Scotland’s most progressive Community Councils is not just content with monthly meetings of guest speakers, open forums and responding to planning and licensing proposals. Paisley West & Central Community is also gearing up for another busy year of community outreach. Its WISH Project – the West end Is Healthier and Safer – continues to raise awareness of the affects of alcohol abuse. It is supported by Renfrewshire Alcohol & Drugs Forum, Renfrewshire Council and Community Health Partnership, the Police, Fire & Rescue Service, the YMCA and Create. Castlehead High and St Mary’s and West Primary Schools are also actively supporting the project and the views of local people obtained at three public events are now being taken forward. Last year, the Community Council obtained a lease for two former Renfrewshire Council demolition sites that now support fifteen plots, each of five raised beds. This offers an opportunity for local residents to ‘grow their own’ and enjoy the health benefits of exercise and fresh fruit and vegetables. Its sub-committee, ‘West End Growing Grounds Association’ welcomes beginners and experienced gardeners and encourages inter-generational involvement. Contact paisleywestcen.cc@btinternet.com or 07710782510. Under the banner ‘Unity in Diversity’, the Community Council organises Paisley’s annual West End Fair in the attractive surroundings of Ferguslie Gardens. This family event includes a sound stage, full musical programme and the finals of the PaISley Talent Competition. Market stalls, a funfair, five-a-side football, youth buses, displays and an information shop complete the line-up. This year’s Fair takes place on Sunday 26th May.
