Engage Page The Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Awards The Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Awards are quickly approaching. These awards celebrate outstanding business achievement in the Renfrewshire area and are considered to be the largest business awards in Scotland. Taking place on Friday 16th November at the Cosmopolitan Normandy Hotel, The ROCCOs offer businesses the chance to be recognised for their achievements and success in 2012. That’s why we are so incredibly proud of Accord Hospice, Recovery Across Mental Health and The Star Project for being shortlisted for the ROCCO Award for Third Sector Recognition. Recently we had the chance to sit down with ns shortlisted organisations for the Third Sector Recognition Award at this year’s ROCCO awards. They are Recovery Across Mental Health, The Star Project and Accord Hospice. Accord Hospice caters to the needs of local people in Renfrewshire with the help of volunteers and healthcare professionals. The hospice has been running since 1982 and focuses on the wellbeing and health of patients. With support from the local community Accord Hospice has developed into an incredibly important member of the third sector. Recovery Across Mental Health was originally established in 1978 and acted as a local forum for discussion, as well as a campaigning body and pressure group. The membership is drawn from local users of service, carers, professionals in the mental health field and people who share a passion to reduce stigma and promote a greater understanding of mental health. The STAR Project is a partnership between four local churches and the local community. St James and Wallneuk North Churches of Scotland, Mossvale Community Church and St James Roman Catholic Church support the project in many ways including volunteering and funding with other volunteers drawn from across the community. You can find out more about the awards on ROCCOs website

Recovery Across Mental Health (RAMH) RAMH has many goals ranging from supporting people who experience some aspect of mental ill health to reducing discrimination towards those who suffer from it. Stephen McLellan of RAMH says “Recovery for us is not about cure but more about giving people the opportunity to make the most of themselves” 2012 has been a mixed year for RAMH. They’ve developed a new service in south Ayrshire that has grown and evolved over the past 12 months. They’ve also been affected by the implication of public sector cuts and have had to try and overcome the effect of them on their organisation. “When the local authorities and statutory players get the cold, we get the flu” said Stephen. “So we’re having to try and find ways to minimise the impact of cuts in funding and cuts to the public sector” Stephen said that he was really delighted that RAMH had been shortlisted for the Third Sector Recognition Award. “Rather than the organisation, this is more for the people we represent. It’s an acknowledgement that mental illness exists and that it has a place in society. If we get some acknowledgement out of it then it raises the profile of mental ill health and the profile of the people who use our services”. Stephen thinks that the third sector recognition award is important “because it highlights the role that the third sector can play. Without the third sector a lot of the functions of health, social work and local authorities in general could not be achieved. It’s that symbiotic relationship with other sectors that’s important. One couldn’t exist without the other”. Engage Page The Star Project I got the chance to sit down with Sharon McAulay to discuss Star Project, a small organisation that helps people in the north end of paisley find a better quality of life. They achieve this by offering a myriad of services that “allow people to find a better sense of well being and living, not just for themselves but for their family and community” 2012 has been a hectic year for Star Project. “There has been extreme high’s and also extreme lows but it can only get better. I think that where we are right now is an extreme high but if you’d have come and spoke to us in January you would not believe that we’d be sitting here today” said Sharon. She went on to describe the many pitfalls and struggles that Star Project had gone through such as roofs falling In, managers leaving and the threat of possible closure. All of these things have been overcome though through the creative ideas of the Star Project staff. Sharon is incredibly proud that The Star Project has been shortlisted for the third sector award. She believes that being recognised for all of the hard work in the past year is fantastic “We work just as solidly as everyone else but because we’re a community project we often get overlooked and yet all of our partners in recent surveys have said that they wouldn’t be able to do the work they do without us. It can only be a good thing to be recognised for all that hard work” Sharon went on to say that the award means “everything to us especially when you look at the start of our year”.

Accord Hospice Accord Hospice supports patients and families who have been presented with a life limiting diagnosis. Helen Simpson is the chief executive at the hospice and we got a chance to find out more about what Accord Hospice offers. The past 12 months have been a very exciting time for us as this is the 30th anniversary of the hospice. The first meeting of the founding fathers of the hospice took place in 1982. It is also the 20th anniversary of the opening of the in-patient unit”. Helen went on to talk about some of the ways in which the hospice has celebrated these landmarks. ”We took the opportunity to have a tea party and acknowledged the staff members with an award for their 20 years’ service to the In- patient unit”. Something else that was mentioned is that a recent involvement with the local primary schools resulted in 3000 drawings from pupils across Renfrewshire celebrating the goals of the hospice, especially as this is the 30th Birthday. Helen believes that the third sector in Paisley has really come into its own. “it’s a very difficult time for the third sector because we rely a lot on charitable giving and we know about the economical and financial situation of the people in our community but by demonstrating good support of our community either by care giving or by supporting people, the community will remember this and return this support. So I believe as a Third Sector organisation we play a vital part in the community and in this sector” Contact: Engage Renfrewshire Limited, 10 Falcon Crescent, Paisley, PA3 1NS Telephone: 0141 887 7707 Fax: 0141 887 8808 Email: info@engagerenfrewshire.com Website: www.engagerenfrewshire.com Scottish Charity number: SC018453 Company Registration number: 120101 5
