This year we received three nominations for Volunteer of the Year. James MacDonald for his work with kids in our community, Janis Herbison for organizing the Women’s Club and her donations of paintings to various events in the community and Angie Watson for her work with the Saddle Club, high school rodeo group and now as a Lion’s Club member. The winner will be announced at a volunteer’s appreciation dinner on June 3rd.

Over the summer there will be various activities for the community to take part in such as Canada Day, Heritage Days, Fall Fair, ball tournament and fishing derby. There is always something to do in this wonderful community. Have a safe and fun summer.

Mayor Karen Anderson Local Government Awareness Week During Local Government Awareness Week, May 16-22, Council members spoke to school classes about the many roles of local government.

Council is working hard to obtain a full time doctor. One of the reasons Northern Health keeps using is the lack of our residents presently using the clinic. I know that for some residents it has been a frustrating situation May 2010

Theme Boxes The Library was given a grant that was used to purchase many educational and fun toys/ items to put together theme boxes for preschool aged children. There are 8 boxes that will be available soon for loan. The themes are, Numbers, Letters, Farm, Dinosaurs, Science, Colours, Bugs and Shapes. The grant also helped us to purchase a Listening Centre and many new children’s books with accompanying CD’s.

Progress has been made towards producing a museum expansion feasibility study and business plan and a final report will be ready by the end of June.

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the Northern Region Heritage Fair held at the school on April 29th. The judges were very impressed with everyone’s projects. Six students were chosen to attend the Provincial Fair in Barkerville at the beginning of July. Thank you to all the staff who organized the event and to the parents and judges who helped out on that day.

This town is looking so tidy after the spring clean-up. One of the neighbours has gone above and beyond in cleaning up the boulevard in front of his property! He cleared all the brush away, after help with spring burning from Brian and Darren. He picked stumps and rocks for days and hauled them away, and now it is starting to turn green. What a lot of hard work, and it just looks great! Hats off to you Don Buchanan!

You may have seen a new face in the branch since mid March of this year, however, not new to North Peace Savings and Credit Union. Jackie Baker joins us at the Hudson’s Hope Branch. You will see her on the front line as Cheyanne’s replacement.

Jackie worked as MSR Supervisor at the Fort St. John Branch for the past four years, where she supervised approximately 24-26 front line staff. Jackie also was an intricate part of our conversion team when we switched to the new banking system last August. She has a vast knowledge of our new banking system and our products and services. She is a great asset to our branch and community.

And speaking of community, Jackie isn’t new to Hudson’s Hope either. You may know her as Jackie Huxley. Jackie was raised in the area and started school at General Pearkes and moved on to the old Hudson’s Hope school until her family moved when she was in grade 8.

The Allan Cup trophy is awarded to the national senior amateur men’s ice hockey champions of Canada since 1908.

Luke started playing hockey in Hudson’s Hope at the age of three. He played on the Cranbrook ‘AAA’ Provincial PeeWee team, FSJ Huskies, played in Germany, and played for the FSJ Senior Flyers (during that time he was called up to play for Bakersville, Calif, ECHL).

Luke will have the Allan Cup in Hudson’s Hope on June 18-20, 2010.

The manager is responsible for the following duties:  Collect and account for the rent of each unit.  Direct and supervise ongoing building repair and maintenance.  Complete all information forms required by federal and provincial governments.  Submit reports and attend meeting of the Hudson’s Hope Health Care and Housing Society.  Perform computer bookkeeping accounting for all income and expenditures within the budget.  Submit books and all pertinent information to the auditors on an annual basis.

The successful candidate should have good computer skills as well as the ability to work with seniors and listen to their concerns.

RCMP On April 25, 2010 police stopped a vehicle after it failed to stop at two separate stop signs and was swerving over the center line. The driver, a 30 year old Kelowna male, displayed overt signs of impairment and was arrested for impaired driving. He later provided breath samples more than two and half times the legal limit. He is scheduled to appear in court in June.

On April 29, 2010 police received a report of a mess left behind in the Atkinson Sub-division where youth appear to have been partying. Police identified some the youth who returned to the area and cleaned up the mess.

On May 1, 2010 police stopped a vehicle which resulted in a small amount of marihuana being located. The two youths were arrested for possession of a controlled substance. No charges are being forwarded at this time.

On May 3, 2010 police received a report of a missing female. Patrols and enquiries were made around town. The female later located at home where she had returned to her own .

On May 8, 2010 police received a report of a single vehicle accident near Lynx Creek after the driver blew out a tire. No one was injured and Emergency services were not required.

On May 11, 2010 police, fire/rescue, and BC Ambulance responded to a report of single vehicle accident near Lynx Creek. The driver, a 30 year old male Chetwynd resident, had fallen asleep at the wheel, crossed the center line, and struck the opposite ditch. He was not wearing his seatbelt and suffered serious head trauma and a broken vertebrae. The passenger, a 27 year old Chetwynd resident, was wearing his seatbelt and suffered only minor injuries. The two were transported to hospital. The driver was issued violations tickets for driving without due care and attention, failing to wear his seatbelt, and served a 3 month driving prohibition.

On May 11, 2010 police received a report of a 2 year old child who had been found in the school playground unsupervised. Police attended the residence. The child had left the residence while her mother was sleeping. The Ministry of Children and Families were advised.

On May 14, 2010 police received information of a ATV accident on Johnson Creek Rd. Two males were doubling when they took a corner too fast and rolled the ATV. Both males were transported to hospital by BC Ambulance with serious injuries.

On May 16, 2010 police received a report of a ATV accident near Williston Lake. A 47 year old Fort St John female had crasher her ATV and suffered internal injuries as a result. She was transported to Chetwynd hospital for treatment.

On May 16, 2010 vandals dumped antifreeze into the fuel tank of a grader up Farrell Creek Rd causing engine damage. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hudson's Hope RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 The Bulletin

On May 17, 2010 police responded with fire rescue to a grass fire near Beryl Prairie. The fire was extinguished quickly. In dry conditions police and fire/rescue remind everyone to be aware of extreme fire conditions and that wild fires can start from something as small as a cigarette thrown from a vehicle.

On May 22, 2010 police stopped a vehicle for speeding. The driver, a 26 year old Burnaby resident, was prohibited from driving under section 93 of the motor vehicle act.

The vehicle was impounded for 30 days and the driver has been charged with driving while prohibited. He is schedule to appear in court in July.

On May 21, 2010 a local resident was woken up to the sound of footsteps in their house. An intoxicated female, who had entered the wrong house, was using the washroom. The home owner confronted the female telling her to leave and not to drive.

The female left, got in her vehicle, and drove away. Police located the vehicle, but the female no longer in it. Police later located and identified the woman.

On the May long weekend police conducted several counter attack road checks, vehicle patrols, and ATV patrols resulting in several violations tickets, seven 24-hour driving prohibitions, and a couple of vehicle impounds.

Police also arrested two males near Geddes Bay for careless use of a firearm after they were observed shooting a semi-automatic rifle and a shotgun across the lake with people and ATV's in the area. Two firearms were 9

Police would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the inherent risks associated with off-road vehicle use such as ATV's, motor bikes, and dune buggies.

These types vehicle are unlicenced and are for off-road use only. They cannot be operated on any roads or highways. Please exercise caution, wear a helmet, and never consume alcohol when operating any motorized vehicle. Anyone operating any motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol can be charged with impaired driving resulting in the loss of their licence, fines, and a criminal record.

This July 3 and 4th the Jam at the Dam Music Festival Society will be holding its 6th annual festival in Hudson’s Hope, B.C. at The Pearkes Cultural Centre.

This family oriented weekend has grown over the years into a modest musical weekend at which Peace region musicians are featured.

The festival was started originally by two friends, Evelyn Watson and the late Anna Biberdorf, who were at Grizzfest 2004. They were so thrilled that the local Hudson’s Hope band ‘Stand Together’ received the People’s Choice Award that year. They believed that Hudson's Hope had the best band so “why can’t we have our own damned festival?” So with a lot of support from volunteers and local businesses, Jam at the Dam 2005 was started and since then each year the awesome talent of Peace region musicians is enjoyed.

Preschool Health Roundup

Spruce It Up Day

Preschool Health Roundup has to all those who helped with the A nother T hanks been planned for Wednesday, June 2nd Spruce It Up Day on May 16. in Fort St. John at the Enerplex. It will run from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.

With burgers supplied by Talisman, the Beryl Prairie Fire Department held a community BBQ at the fire hall at the end of the cleanup.

This event is for 3 and 4 year old children and their families. There will be hearing, vision and dental checks, nutrition tips, healthy snack ideas, safety tips, school readiness, language development, multiculturalism and much more.

YRB made a generous donation to the Grads who cleaned the roadsides towards Beryl Prairie and Lynx Creek. They did a great job and went beyond the agreed upon route as they saw garbage on the hill going down to Lynx Creek. Just a reminder to people, please don't throw your litter out the window! There were many broken bottles along this route that is often used by horseback riders and hikers.

There will be door prizes, giveaways and a place for children to play.

Hudson’s Hope Protective Services Spring has sprung and the warmer weather means a tradition in the Hudson’s Hope W ell, Fire & Rescue Department....Brush Fires.

We have already had several brush fires this year that the department has responded to.

These included a major fire (30 ha) that involved both our department and BC Forrest Service firefighting crews. In the end we were able to protect all of the major buildings on the property and no lives were lost, however, the fire had the potential to be much worse. I would like to extend a thank you to all of the District’s volunteer firefighters along with members of the public who helped out in a variety of ways.

One of the reasons that I mention this incident was the fact that it appears to have been started by an unattended campfire. I want to stress the importance of always watching your campfires and making sure that they are out when you leave. This means that the embers are cool to the touch!!! Discarded cigarettes can also cause brush fires, so please make sure you dispose of them safely. Our forests are dry and many of them are full of dead pine. This presents a ticking time bomb that threatens the safety of everyone in our community. The BC Forrest Service has stated that they will be strictly enforcing any campfire bans this summer.

Fines can range from $173 for discarding a cigarette to $345 for having a campfire when there is a ban. Although there isn’t currently a campfire ban in Hudson’s Hope or the surrounding area, Fire Ban information will be posted at both the Post Office and the District Office.

We would also like to remind you to Slow Down and Pull Over when passing emergency vehicles that are parked on the side of the road...it is now the law in BC. Finally, if you see a vehicle with its 4 way flashers going and a Hudson’s Hope Fire Department licence plates; please pull over and let them by as they are responding to a call...they could be on their way to help your family or friends.

EMERGENCY SOCIAL SERVICES MEETING Thursday June 3rd, 2010 at 7:00 PM District Office – Emergency Program Office (Access through basement entrance).

What is ESS? Emergency Social Services (ESS) provides short-term assistance to British Columbians who are forced to leave their homes because of fire, floods, earthquakes or other emergencies.

What qualifications do I need?

You need to have a desire to help people and a willingness to learn new things.

What do I get out of it?

The rewards are many and include the satisfaction of helping other in their time of need, the possibility of travelling to help out in other areas of the Province during disasters (only if you want to), training opportunities and working with a great group of like minded people Who should attend?

Hudson’s Hope Ski Association Our Vice President, Ian Tegart, has been busy checking parts and measurements and doing various other technical things to get ready for the initial trial run of the lift. He’s excited and his enthusiasm is catching. Be sure to encourage him when you see him and let’s all help to make the 2010/2011 ski season a reality in Hudson’s Hope.

Mark your calendars for the Father’s Day Fishing Derby. It’s always great fun!

Our regularly scheduled meetings have been changed to the fourth Thursday of each month to accommodate more member’s schedules. We will continue to meet at Freddie’s Deli at 7:00 PM. Next meeting will be Thursday, June 24, 2010. Everyone is welcome, hope to see you there. Thanks.

INTERESTING STUFF There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP' It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report ?

We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP. To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP .. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP ...When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP. What’s up with that?
