SANDY SPRINGS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

JOIN OUR JOURNEY … WELCOME to the inaugural season of the performing arts center at City Springs. We envisioned City Springs as a community gathering spot, the place where we meet old friends and make new ones. It’s where we weave a diverse community into a tapestry called Sandy Springs, and incorporating the arts is an important facet. Involvement in the arts, whether visual, theatrical or musical, creates tiny threads that draw people in, spark imagination and foster a sense of community. After all, Sandy Springs has a long history of thinking creatively. It was that sort of thinking that first led to cityhood and now, 12 years later, to the opening of City Springs. Through art we can tell stories. We expect you’ll find our inaugural season rich with tales that intrigue, excite and entertain. This year — and in future years — we will deliver variety and diversity in performances intended to entice you to come back again and again. William Shakespeare said that “the object of art is to give life shape.” A key goal of this facility is shaping the minds of our young people — our future artists — through arts education. Here, the arts will not only fire their imaginations but build their academic skills, as well. To support those efforts, the Sandy Springs Arts Foundation is raising funds to underwrite diversified arts and education programming that will expose them to worldrenowned artists in an environment that nurtures learning while sharing arts experiences with the entire community. So, pick your shows, take your seat and enjoy. Rusty Paul Mayor, Sandy Springs

JUNE 14 Cosmic Charlie – Cosmic Charlie was born in the musical mecca of Athens, Georgia. From its summer 1999 inception, the band has swiftly cemented its reputation as a band that puts a unique and personal twist on the Grateful Dead catalog — a Dead cover band for folks that are ambivalent about Dead cover bands. Rather than mimicking the Dead exactly, Cosmic Charlie chooses to tap into the Dead’s energy and style as a foundation on which to build. The result is a healthy balance of creativity and tradition. JUNE 21 Band of Oz – The Band of Oz is one of the most successful groups in the Southeast and continues to get the very best reviews from the top people in the entertainment business. In 1995 they released the hit single “Shama Lama Ding Dong,” that won the People’s Choice Song of the Year at the 1995 Cammy Awards, and is one of the most requested beach songs of all time. In 1997, the band was inducted into the Beach Music Hall of Fame.

JUNE 28 Savannah Jack – Savannah Jack plays country music with influence from the Beatles, Tom Petty, and more. Savannah Jack has been the preferred opening act for legendary Kenny Rogers. The band has performed onstage with Rogers more than 66 times, including on a 21-city tour of England, Scotland, and Ireland in the Spring of 2009. The band’s live show was recognized as one of the Top Concerts of 2010 in the Greater Pittsburg area by Beaver County Times writer Scott Tady. They are in good company as other top ten selectees include Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and Lady Gaga. JULY 26 Big Sam’s Funky Nation – Big Sam’s Funky Nation is known for a boisterous blend of funk, jazz, rock, and hip-hop. With nothing short of seismic live experiences and a whole lot of Southern charm, Big Sam’s Funky Nation might very well be The Big Easy’s best-kept secret. Big Sam ensures audience members are not just a part of the crowd, but part of the show and dancing and

singing along. Beyond their standout sets at the likes of Voodoo Music + Experience and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the band has performed at Bonnaroo, SXSW, and Austin City Limits, to name a few. AUGUST 2 The Sundogs - Brothers Lee and Will Haraway formed The Sundogs in Atlanta, GA in the early 2000s. The duo quickly earned attention for their melodic Americana Rock ’n’ Roll sound and their high-energy live shows. Having long been compared to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, the six-piece band has shared the stage with many big acts including Zac Brown Band, Widespread Panic, and Sugarland. AUGUST 16 Sam Burchfield & the Scoundrels / The Trongone Band – From folk, to funk, to southern soul, Sam and his band of ‘Scoundrels’ capture it all. The rowdy crew puts on a show that is electrifyingly entertaining and yet still full of Burchfield’s lyrical honesty and depth. Joining the lineup is The Trongone Band. Formed by brothers Andrew and Johnny and their father John Sr., The Trongone Band has grown from a family affair to a full-on touring machine. The band has come together to create an old-school and all-in-the-family sound reminiscent of the Allman Brothers while still keeping it fresh with a little funk and blues thrown into the mix. AUGUST 30 Ruby Velle / Delta Moon – Described as deep, raw funk, sax-style Southern soul, uplifting Motown-channeling anthems, Atlanta’s Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics are the heirs to the thrones of the old-school masters. Much more than just a group of revivalists trying to create a period piece, powerhouse singer Velle and her band will settle for nothing less than bringing these 10

classic sounds glimmering into the now with a fresh new modern sheen. Delta Moon has quickly gathered a wallfull of local “Best Of” awards, including Creative Loafing’s Critics Choice-Best Atlanta Blues Band 2018. But it was winning the 2003 International Blues Challenge that launched the band to play worldwide at the prestigious Montreal Jazz Fest and other festivals across America and Europe. SEPTEMBER 27 Shawn Mullins – The City Green Live series closes out with singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins who specializes in folk rock, instrumental rock, adult alternative, and American music. Mullins is best known for the 1998 single “Lullaby,” which hit number one on the Adult Top 40 and was nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 1998 Grammy Awards.

City Green Live is sponsored by the Sandy Springs Arts Foundation, Scofflaw Brewing Company, and Coca-Cola.

The Select - From the same team behind the popular Vinings restaurant Paces and Vine, The Select at City Springs promises a light interpretation of contemporary American with a slight French accent. The eatery is named for the legendary Le Select in Paris which was the lively home to the famous expatriates from last century including Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Man Ray, Picasso and others. The Select serves up comfort food and offers an outstanding wine list and creative craft cocktails. Ideal for after a show or movie, the bar is open late on Fridays and Saturdays for patrons to enjoy the chef’s small plates with a favorite cocktail or beer. Wine lovers will fall in love with the wine list and will enjoy sampling the very best wines at affordable prices. The Select also hosts “Select Nights” featuring live music.

A leisurely stroll through the plaza at City Green can now include your favorite cocktail! In 2017, The Sandy Springs City Council approved an open container policy allowing beer, wine, and cocktails purchased on-site from one of the City Springs bars or restaurants to be consumed outside of that establishment and on City Green. The ordinance allows no more than two drinks to be served at one time per person and requires that the drinks are served only in plastic cups up to 16 ounces. Festivals can also sell alcohol, provided organizers obtain a special event permit issued by the City. The ordinance covers the area bordered by Mount Vernon Highway to the south, Sandy Springs Circle to the west, Johnson Ferry Road to the north, and Roswell Road to the east. It also includes the area of the City’s south parking lot between Mount Vernon Highway and Hilderbrand Drive.

CITY SPRINGS THEATRE COMPANY

RAISES THE CURTAIN, RAISES THE ROOF CITY SPRINGS THEATRE COMPANY (CSTC) wraps up its incredibly successful first season in July with Hairspray, the musical adaptation of the eponymous hit movie. The story is set in 1962 Baltimore in 1962, and the “pleasantly plump” teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire: to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. She is a girl with big hair and an even bigger heart who sets out to follow her extraordinary dreams. Winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, this family-friendly show is piled bouffant-high 20

with laughter, romance, and deliriously tuneful songs. Hairspray is the ultimate feel good musical and is the ideal show to conclude the inaugural season for the City Springs Theatre Company. Kicking off their first season, the company staged the toe-tapping, hand clapping classic musical, 42nd Street. Followed by Elf The Musical, South Pacific and Billy Elliot, their first season could be considered a musical theatre’s field of dreams. They built, the audience came, and the results exceeded

BEN ROSE

all expectations. Originally anticipating 500 subscribers for their first year, CSTC now has a roster of 4,200 subscribers with room for more! The popularity of their shows throughout the season required them to expand offerings and add two additional shows for each production. As such, Wednesday and Thursday evening performances are now available for each show of the second season. City Springs Theatre Company was founded by four visionary leaders — Jan

Collins, Steven Hauser, and Peggy and Jerry Stapleton — who approached theatre veteran Brandt Blocker to work with them and make the dream a reality. They credit their success to the strength of the community, the excellent location, and the City of Sandy Springs’ commitment to the arts. In addition to recruiting Blocker as executive artistic director, the City Springs Theatre Company hired Tony Award-winning Broadway veteran and creator of the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards Shuler Hensley as associate artistic director.

SANDY SPRINGS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER | CITYSPRINGS.COM

Blocker carefully selected the lineup for the company’s first season, and incorporated responses and feedback when planning for their second season. Recently announced, this spectacular second season features Disney’s Tony Award-winning musical Mary Poppins, the Atlanta stage premier of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn, the hilarious Tony Awardwinning A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, the soulful sounds of Sister Act the Musical, and the irreverently hysterical Tony Award-winning Monty Python’s Spamalot! But delighting audiences is only part of the magic. Made possible through a partnership with the City of Sandy Springs and the Sandy Springs Arts Foundation, 22

the City Springs Theatre Company provides educational programming through their enrichment series. Programs have included student matinees, master classes, and summer programs. This year, City Springs Theatre Company will offer NextGen Broadway, a week-long theatre camp for rising 2nd to 8th graders that will culminate in a final showcase. With the goal of providing students with the opportunity to experience diverse art forms in a world-class facility, the City Springs Theatre Company has, to date, served 45 schools in the Atlanta-metropolitan area, touching the lives of more than 5,000 children.

SANDY SPRINGS ARTS FOUNDATION

INSPIRING YOUNG MINDS

The Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center provides an opportunity for all ages to learn about the fine arts and improve their skills. Workshops, summer camps and special events introduce younger residents to the visual and performing arts and heighten their appreciation, knowledge and understanding of the universal and timeless qualities that identify all great art. The Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center enhances the city’s economic value, enriching quality-of-life offerings vital for the overall health of a community. The City of Sandy Springs and City Springs Theatre Company have teamed up to introduce people of all backgrounds and generations to high-quality and diverse arts education programming. This initiative will provide access to the arts for underserved populations who may lack the 26

resources to attend events and will engage young people in the exploration of potential career opportunities. The diverse program offerings will serve students and educators Pre-K through college and engage the educational community through a student matinee series, hands-on training and summer programming. The community will also have opportunities to engage in the arts through family-oriented programming, summer arts camps and interactions with artists to understand the creative process. Funding for these arts education and community programming initiatives is provided through the Sandy Springs Arts Foundation (www.ssarts.org). For more information about arts education programming, please contact Natalie Barrow DeLancey with the City Springs Theatre Company.
