DEAR HIV, WE DIDN’T GIVE UP. XOXO, SCIENCE There is no cure, but science is still in the battle against HIV. Today’s HIV treatments taken every day as prescribed can help you get to and stay undetectable. That means the amount of virus is so low it can’t be measured by lab tests. Research shows that staying undetectable means there’s effectively no risk of transmitting HIV through sex. Ask your healthcare provider about HIV and treatment options.

“Well, why not?” It’s a simple little statement, but it can have enormous repercussions. If you’re Jerry Mitchell and you’ve just read a novel that touched your soul, and you think maybe it could be a musical, then “well, why not?” sends you on a path that takes you to the doors of fabled musical team George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, as well as brilliant book writer Elliot Davis. If you’re the Alliance Theatre and the aforementioned director and creative team knock on your door, and along the way have picked up the most A list of A list design teams and they’re ready for a producing partner, then “well, why not?” sends you on a path that sees your scenic, costume, props, sound, and lighting departments making crazy beautiful work. If you’re David Starr and Francis Bassey — two young people our story is about to introduce you to — and life hands you an opportunity to change the way some people think, then “well, why not?” sends all of us on a path where our hearts and minds grow a little bigger, a little better, and become a whole lot more capable of asking the question ourselves the next time we’re wondering about making some change in the world. Why not, indeed.

T

hree years ago, the Alliance Theatre brought us The Prom, a world-premiere musical that proved to have strong enough legs to sashay all the way to Broadway receiving seven Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Musical, along the way. Now, here comes another musical also concerned with high school students, also being launched in Atlanta. The world premiere of Becoming Nancy, on the fully remodeled Coca-Cola Stage, kicks up the Alliance’s 51st season. It’s 1979, in the working-class suburb of East Dulwich, just south of London. (“In East Dulwich/ The best advice for you/ is if you’re passing, pass on through.”) David Starr is a high school senior who’s passionate about the pop-rock music of the era. Posters plastered on his bedroom wall feature Debbie Harry (aka Blondie), ABBA, Sting, and Kate Bush. David often feels like the faces on his walls are the only ones who really know and listen to him. David’s got vocal chops himself. He sings so well, in fact, that drama teacher Hamish 6 ALLIANCE THEATRE | ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

McClarnon casts him as Nancy, the female lead in the school’s upcoming production of the 1960 musical, Oliver! Wait — what? A boy in 1979 playing the role of the hard-luck Nancy, who belts out “As Long as He Needs Me,” that searing torch song? What will the neighbors say? David’s mother, Kath Starr, is proud of her son for landing the role and gears up to sew the dresses he’s to wear in the show. David’s dad, Eddie Starr, is less enthusiastic, saying “He’ll be a laughing stock. Why couldn’t he be Fagin or the other little twat in the top hat?” Eddie even blames his wife for taking David to see so many Julie Andrews films. About six years ago, Broadway musical theater director-choreographer Jerry Mitchell was routinely crossing the Atlantic while working on productions of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in London and Kinky Boots in both New York and London. “I was flying back and forth so many times,” he recalls, “I’d already watched all the movies. So I was at the airport, looking for something to read.” As fate would have it, he ENCORE ATLANTA | ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION | ENCOREATLANTA.COM

picked up Becoming Nancy by Terry Ronald, a coming-of-age romance published in 2011. The book was a bestseller in Great Britain. Mitchell, who won Tony Awards for his choreography of La Cage aux Folles (2005) and Kinky Boots (2013), read Becoming Nancy on the plane. Right after landing stateside, he called his lawyer to look into acquiring theatrical rights to Ronald’s young adult novel. “The book knocked me out,” Mitchell says. “I was a gay boy growing up in Paw Paw, Michigan, and let me tell you – I could relate to this emotional love story and to David’s journey of self-discovery.” Mitchell can’t help but be reminded of the countless letters he’s read from young people who’ve seen Kinky Boots. “I have a stack of letters from young people who don’t live in New York or California who wrote to say that the show allowed them to take a step in their own direction. Becoming Nancy has that same ability. I think about what young trans people are going through these days. This amazing story about acceptance reminds us again that every student is not the same. It provides opportunity for parents, teachers, kids, anyone out there to open their minds.” While discussing his creative process preparing to begin rehearsals, Mitchell mentioned picking up a valuable lesson in directing from the late Michael Bennett, creator-director of A Chorus Line: Have every line and lyric memorized before going into the rehearsal room. “I never once saw Michael Bennett hold the script in his hands. He was on his feet and the scene was in his head. You bet I learned from that. When my face is in the script, I can’t watch the actors and feed off of them.” Becoming Nancy, he notes, is providing him with the chance to deeply develop characters. “A number of people in this story go on the sort of emotional journey of selfdiscovery that I’ve not been able to take with any other show I’ve done.” His extensive Broadway credits also include Hairspray (as choreographer), On Your Feet! (director), and Legally Blonde: The Musical and the recent Pretty Woman: The Musical (directorchoreographer for both). Becoming Nancy boasts a range of juicy roles. Besides the witty and charming David, a role being originated by Zachary Sayle (a native of Birmingham who was Crutchie in the national tour of Newsies), there are David’s aforementioned drama teacher and parents, plus his Aunt Val. These four adults (David’s teacher, mother, father, and aunt), are sure to delightfully surprise audiences by stepping out of their ordinary shoes. There’s also Frances, who urges best friend David to embrace his inner Nancy, and other students at Dog Kennel Road Secondary Modern like bully Jason Lancaster, who says that a boy playing a woman in the school musical is “a full-on freak show.” And then there’s 8 ALLIANCE THEATRE | ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

the school’s football captain, Maxie, cast in the role of mean Bill Sikes, Nancy’s romantic interest in Oliver!. “One of the things I really love about this story,” Mitchell says, “is that all of these characters have different views to what’s going on. I like the range of ways they react and interact. You’re going to be able to relate to at least one of these people.” The director-choreographer has worked on a number of contemporary shows that deal with teen angst and the trials of growing up, but Becoming Nancy hits him on a very personal level. “I didn’t feel like I had any role models in high school,” he says. “I was left in the dark, with no one to turn to.” Mitchell had that iconic Farrah Fawcett poster (red swimsuit) on his wall in the late 1970s and, though David sometimes confides in the famous faces on his bedroom walls, Farrah didn’t prove to be much help. As Mitchell dug into the Becoming Nancy script, he contemplated whether or not “my parents ever talked about me being gay. I wonder if they ever had the discussion and if it could have affected their partnership. How did it affect their lives? Did they feel guilty? Did they ever, ever talk about it?” The director enlisted the versatile songwriting team of composer George Stiles and lyricist Anthony Drewe (Honk! and Broadway’s Mary Poppins), to pen the score for Nancy, and Elliot Davis (Peter Pan — A Musical Adventure), to write its book. All three, he says, also fell instantly in love with Ronald’s novel. “If you don’t love the story you’re telling, you are going to have a hard time telling it.”

ROCK against RACISM Story by Kay Nilest | Photos by Syd Shelton In Becoming Nancy, students in the small town of East Dulwich face growing racism, homophobia, and xenophobia in the form of an alt-right group of neo-Nazis. In response, David’s best friend Frances helps advertise for Rock Against Racism (RAR), a local concert in the park that advocates racial and gender inclusion. This movement existed in England in the 1970s and 1980s to counteract rising racist attitudes. In the United Kingdom, a neo-Nazi political group called the National Front was gaining support in the polls. Their popularity was bolstered by racist statements made by well-known rock musicians including guitarist Eric Clapton, who made a declaration of support for Conservative minister Enoch Powell and shouted the National Front slogan, “Keep Britain White,” at one of his concerts. Many in the rock community reacted negatively, especially considering much of Clapton’s fame came

from a successful cover of Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff.” A group of musicians and music lovers published a letter denouncing Clapton’s racism and calling him out, saying “Who shot the sheriff, Eric? It sure as hell wasn’t you!” From this energy grew a desire to show that there were other musicians who supported inclusion and diversity. In 1976, Red Saunders, Roger Huddle, Jo Wreford, Pete Bruno, and others joined with the Anti-Nazi League to organize the first Rock Against Racism concert, which included Carol Grimes and Matumbi as the main acts. At the end of the gig, both bands came together and took part in a jam. This show of black and white artists performing on the same stage and creating music together became a signature of RAR performances. RAR created opportunities for young people, both black and white, to come

12 ALLIANCE THEATRE | ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

together in their shared love of music. “I was a 15-year-old kid very much into The Clash when I went to RAR. It completely changed my outlook…For many like me, it was the first political event we had been to,” said Geoff Martin, organizer of the 30th anniversary Rock Against Racism show. Although the concerts were labelled Rock Against Racism, they frequently included artists from other music genres who grew up on the same energy and angry mood as punk music. They also made a special effort to celebrate the black roots in their music by highlighting black influences in rock ’n’ roll and showcasing other genres, such as reggae, with predominantly black musicians. These small-scale collaborations in local concerts soon grew into a larger movement. RAR inspired related events such as the Carnival Against Racism in 1978 (a festival-type music event held in “poor but vibrant multi-racial areas”), the Militant Entertainment Tour (a tour that travelled across the country and included 40 bands to raise awareness leading up to the UK

general election of 1979), and Rock Against Sexism (a concert organized by women concerned about sexism in the music industry). As the movement grew, it also began to include bigger names in music, most notably The Clash. RAR concerts were an identifying feature of the rock music scene from 1976-1982. In 1976, the National Front was the fourth largest political party in Britain. By 1981, it had largely been beaten down. It suffered a defeat in the 1979 general elections. The decline in popular support was a result of changing attitudes and cultural norms that came from the RAR movement. People found a different way to connect with each other through music. The essence of Rock Against Racism is captured in the words of the late activist David Widgery: “For a while we managed to create, in our noisy, messy, unconventional way, an emotional alternative to nationalism and patriotism, a celebration of a different kind of pride and solidarity.”

onstage & off Creation, Imagination, and Celebration An Interview with Maya Lawrence by Hershey Millner

The Alliance Theatre Education team works with young people year-round, and especially during the 11 weeks of summer camp. From babies taking their first steps to high school seniors making the leap into adulthood, our campus is full of young people discovering and celebrating themselves through theater. We spoke with Spelman Fellow Maya Lawrence (pictured), about the magic of this medium and how it has shaped not only her students, but herself. When David Starr is unexpectedly cast in the role of “Nancy” in his school’s production of Oliver! the experience acts as catalyst for his journey of self-acceptance. He learns the power of taking risks, standing up for what you believe in, and opening yourself up to love. What is your favorite memory of a student who learned a valuable lesson through theater education at the Alliance? One of my favorite memories of Drama Camp was of a student who came to us while in the process of being adopted. He would walk in every morning, sit in a corner alone, and listen to the soundtrack of Hamilton until his iPod died. In moments of high anxiety, he used musical theater as a blanket of comfort. In moments when the severe traumas he had suffered in his brimful 8 years of life surfaced and drowned him with fear, he consumed videos of Daveed Diggs in an orange bow-tie singing the “Rubber Ducky” song like a spoonful of sugar that helped the medicine go down. When it came time for him to perform, the same boy that entered on Monday, cocooned in a shell of fear and doubt, fluttered onto the stage on Friday to perform his own rendition of the Daveed Diggs’ “Rubber Ducky” song, as his character Rabbit from our production of Winnie the Pooh. It was in watching him perform in front of an audience of his family, campers, and our staff that I witnessed the pride he expressed in having agency in his identity. Not only to display himself, but to be received and celebrated so fully. He created a home for himself on that stage. David’s decision to embrace his nontraditional role and live in his truth has a profound impact on his family, as well as himself. We watch his parents struggle to understand their son as their world is changing and their beliefs are challenged. How does participating in theater, as a performer or a patron, help us become more accepting and empathetic people? Theater, whether you are witnessing it or making it, expands our perception of the world and our capacity for understanding it. Theater is the process of consuming someone else’s reality. Once that door is opened, the floodgates open to the possibilities of what else we can understand the world to be. How have you grown as a person through your work with theater and young people? My work with young people and theater is what gives me hope for the abundant potential that creativity holds to shape the world, as what we desire it to be. Theater validates the genius of creation and the legitimacy of emotional intelligence. Young people possess the intangible power of their imaginations and theater is a practice that celebrates, cultivates, and manifests that imagination – this creation that can be felt, seen, heard, and consumed by people in real time. This work challenges me to dare greatly, imagine bigger, and validate where my whimsy leads me because “we cannot create, what we cannot imagine” (Lucille Clifton). 14 ALLIANCE THEATRE | ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

Your story. Your stage. We’ve invited artists, friends, and family to share why the Alliance is important to them. We asked Anti-Defemation League Regional Director Allison Padilla-Goodman to respond to the themes of the play and to reflect on the importance of fighting hate. Themes from Becoming Nancy, such as bullying and discrimination, are those that we deal with daily. ADL’s ultimate goal is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or hate — in other words, that David’s coming out experience becomes a positive one. We do this through a myriad of programs and activities, most notably through No Place for Hate®, a signature ADL education initiative in every Atlanta Public School and in over 200 across the Southeast. No Place for Hate provides schools and communities with a programmatic framework and resources to challenge bias, bullying, and hate, and to build communities of respect. The program is critical, as, sadly, we see events like those that transpired at David’s school more often than not. It is fitting that Becoming Nancy centers around an event titled “Rock Against Racism” as we hold our inaugural ADL in Concert Against Hate on November 14. We hope you will join us as we Fight Hate For Good!

— Allison Padilla-Goodman ADL Southeast Regional Director

Synopsis … It’s 1979 in the south London suburb of East Dulwich. Twelfth-grader David Starr has surprisingly been given the female lead in the school play, and his romantic co-star is the enigmatic captain of the football team. The unconventional casting sends shockwaves through David’s small town. Discovering a confidante in his empathetic teacher and spurred on by his best friend, David takes on the school bully, the National Front, and anyone else who stands in the way of his “becoming Nancy.”
