s we sit and look back on things and events that has happen over the years that have either effected our lives, someone we know lives, or effected the world around us, we can’t help but think about the tragedy Hurricane Katrina left behind. this week, New Orleans celebrated the sixth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. six years ago this past Monday, one of the worse natural disasters swept thru the Gulf Coast for hundreds of miles to leave the city and people’s lives to never be the same again. august 29, 2005, many of us watched the news that day to see how a devastation storm could tear a city and a community apart, many of us shed tears as we watched house’s being washed away, people trying to keep their hear up above the water, fam-

The Last Days Warnings 1 John 2:18-27 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. They henry Nelson went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.” But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist that denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.” See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is what he promised us even eternal life.” I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you

do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit just as it has taught you, remain in him.”

e have come to a time when some people who dare to uphold the Bible and live by the word of God are being ridiculed and ostracized. we have more crime, more greed, more corruption, more immorality, and more illegitimate parents. with unprecedented educational opportunities in this country, the situation was getting worse. the movie world seems to be obsessed with the end of the world. there has been a steady stream of films coming out of Hollywood around the theme of end time events and takeoffs on the book of revelation. films like “End of Days,” “armageddon,” “Deep impact,” and “independence Day” are just some examples. However, Hollywood is not the only segment of our society that is obsessed with the End times and the antichrist. Books, Media, Magazines and even the Church. what all of these people do not realize is how they will know the antichrist, and in fact, many antichrists are already here. there are many antichrists and we protect ourselves from them by holding to the teachings of scripture. first, you must realize is that “the antichrist” is coming, but many antichrists are already here. the first thing that John tells us is “little children, it is the last hour.”we see John’s care and concern

for the church in referring to us as his children, and as a loving parent he wants to warn us about what is coming. the first warning that he gives us is that it is the “last hour.” Now we see the term last days often in the New testament, but this is the only place in the New testament that the term “last hour” appears. what exactly did John mean? in his framework, the last times formed a last hour in which the struggle with evil and the unveiling of God’s power would intensify. as we see the events of human history unfold, we can see that we are living in that last hour, and we must be watching and waiting for Christ’s return. He also reminds us that “as you have heard that the antichrist is coming.” the word is a combination of two Greek words. anti, meaning “the opposite or opposed to,” and Christos meaning “anointed one.” it refers to “one who is opposed to Christ, in the sense of usurping the role of Christ. there are tremendous differences between Christ and antichrist. Christ came from above. antichrist will ascend from the pit. Christ came in His father’s name. the antichrist will come in his own name. Christ humbled Himself. the antichrist will exalt himself. Christ was despised. the antichrist will be admired. Christ will be exalted. the antichrist will be cast down to hell Christ came to do His father’s will. the antichrist will do his own will. Christ came to save. the antichrist will come to destroy. Christ is the Good shepherd. the antichrist is the evil shepherd. Christ is the “truth.” the antichrist is the “lie.” Christ is the “Holy

C ity B eat

One”. the antichrist is the “lawless one.” John tells us that the antichrist is coming, but “even now many antichrists have come.” from the earliest days of the church in and around Ephesus, false teachers had been a problem. when Paul bid his final farewell to the elders of the Ephesians church, he warned, in acts 20:29; it says, “i know full well that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you.” these are merely precursors to the one antichrist. throughout history there have been individuals who epitomized evil and who were hostile to everything for which Christ stands. these antichrists have lived in every generation and will continue to work their evil. there are many cult leaders today who, through their teachings, draw people away from true faith. some are more notorious like Jim Jones and David Koresh, but still others are more subtle. John tells us that “by which we know that it is the last hour.” How do we know that it is the last time, that the world is about to end and Jesus Christ is about to return? Because there are many antichrists now, many who oppose and stand against Christ. the antichrist has his forerunners just as Jesus Christ had His prophets as forerunners. therefore, you must be on your guard and you must look out for those who are opposed to the truth of the gospel . if you would like to receive the rest of this week’s message; please request it at:

Katrina.....continued from front cover CDC publicly stated that there were no immediate threats to heath associated with disease. the center for disease control stated that fecal matter was 10 times the acceptable level and lead levels are also high. On august 29, 2005, Katrina became the fifth hurricane of the 2005. the hurricane flattened and flooded much of coastal alabama, Mississippi and louisiana, generating storm surges of nearly 28 feet in some places some expert’s estimate Katrina caused $125 billion in damage, making it the costliest natural disaster in u.s. history. and the storm killed more than 1,800 people, the vast majority of them in louisiana. it was one of the most disruptive moments in the history of the region. Everyone has Katrina memories. Everyone has a Katrina-past”. august 29, 2011, marked the passage of six difficult years of rebuilding for the region, which is showing signs of a strong recovery from the costliest natural disaster in u.s. history. the storm killed more than 1,800 people, a majority of them in New Orleans where water filled up the city after levees and floodwalls built by the army Corps of Engineers failed. as Hurricane irene was bearing down on

the East Coast late last week, many commentators warned of its destructive potential by invoking the memory of Hurricane Katrina. some even tried to compare irene to Katrina, but we all know the 2005 storm was also enormous, though apparently not quite as big as irene. Katrina was about 400 miles wide when it made landfall in louisiana. while Hurricane irene covered more area, Katrina was more intense. six years later, who should bear the brunt of blame for this evacuation failure is still being debated. the 6th anniversary of Katrina’s disaster was one of the worst in us history, leaving an estimated 1,800 dead. residents of New Orleans paid tribute to those who lost their lives when the city’s floodwalls failed and storm surge inundated the streets with deadly floodwaters. the city is still contending with rebuilding homes, jobs and the education system. Journalist Jordan flaherty discussed the legacy of the disaster with the real News Network’s Danya Nadar and said “Now six years later we still have more than 100,000 that haven’t returned. the pre-Katrina population was 465,000, now there’s about 350,000 people…we’re still dealing with the legacy of those

changes. we now know, as former District attorney Eddie Jordan said, that the police officers of New Orleans actually committed more crimes than the people of New Orleans in this post-Katrina period…and it’s a completely unique and incredible struggle led by people at the ground that is so much for people to learn from all around the country.” President Barack Obama promised to help the region “come back stronger than before” while praising “the grit and determination” of the Gulf Coast’s residents. He said his administration helped the recovery along by cutting red tape to free up recovery money and broke “through gridlock” to help thousands of displaced families find homes. Even though many are coming back, one house at a time, just like the community was built so many years ago, and the sixth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina approached, many people will wonder if it can happen again. Even today, our prayers and thoughts still goes out to the families who lost homes, property, loved ones and friends in the 2005 Katrina Hurricane

peRspecTive iN The black cOmmuNiTy Dedication....cont from front cover room table that Brother sealy and a half dozen other members of the local alpha Chapter – iota upsilon lambda, give birth to the idea of a granite monument to honor Dr. King. Dr. King became a member of the alpha Phi alpha fraternity on June 22, 1952 while attending Boston university. while King was a relative unknown at the time, three years later, he became the leader of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He gave his infamous “i Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the lincoln Memorial on the day of the scheduled dedication more than 48 years ago. it was because of his work in the Civil rights Movement, that the brothers of alpha Phi alpha asked the question, “why not a memorial to King on the Mall”? today, almost three decades after that initial meeting, the “dream” of a memorial to honor their brother Martin is now a reality. some 27 years and 120 million dollars later, the 30 foot tall granite monument honoring the life, legacy and memory of the greatest civil rights activist, drum major for justice, the founder and first President of the southern Christian leadership stands tall amongst Presidents abraham lincoln, franklin roosevelt, George washington and thomas Jefferson. it is the first monument on the Mall in washington D.C. to honor an african – american and the first monument on the Mall to honor a non – President. the MlK Jr. National Memorial is located in west

Grace International Seminary

Potomac Park in washington, D.C., southwest of the National Mall. the Memorial is located at the northwest corner of the tidal Basin near the franklin D. roosevelt Memorial, on a sightline linking the lincoln Memorial to the northwest and the Jefferson Memorial to the southeast. the official address of the monument is 1964 independence avenue, s.w. commemorating the year the Civil rights act of 1964 became law. the King Memorial is envisioned as a quiet and peaceful space. yet drawing from Dr. King’s speeches and using his own rich language, the King Memorial will almost certainly change the heart of every person who visits. against the backdrop of the lincoln Memorial, with stunning views of the tidal Basin and the Jefferson Memorial, the Memorial will be a public sanctuary where future generations of americans, regardless of race, religion, gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation can come to honor Dr. King, Harry E. Johnson President and CEO of the Memorial foundation posted on the Memorial’s website. alpha Phi alpha (ΑΦΑ) is the first inter-Collegiate Black Greek letter fraternity. it was founded on December 4, 1906 at Cornell university in ithaca, New york. its founders are known as the "seven Jewels.” its motto is: manly deeds, scholarship and love for all mankind. the fraternity has over 185,000 members and has been open to men of all races since 1940. Currently, there are more than 680 active chapters in the americas,

africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and asia. alpha Phi alpha evolved into a primarily service organization and provided leadership and service during the Great Depression, world wars, and Civil rights Movements. it addresses social issues such as apartheid, aiDs, urban housing, and other economic, cultural, and political issues of interest to people of color. Dr. King, the late former supreme Court Justice, thurgood Marshall, former uN ambassador, andrew young, actor Hill Harper and CNN correspondent roland Martin are among the 185,000 members of this famed fraternity.

he Bank of america Bank located at 3500 lancaster road Oak Cliff was robbed wednesday, august 31, 2011. the robbery occurred at around 10:00 am. the suspect, an african american male allegedly entered the bank intent on robbing it. a struggle ensued between the would-be robber and the security guard. During the struggle the would-be robber took the security guard’s gun and shot him multiple times. the suspect fled to the Holy trinity Church where he allegedly held a gun on the Pastor and a repairman who was on site to repair the church’s air conditioning unit.

the suspect held the gun on the Pastor and the repairman and demanded the keys to the vehicle parked outside. Once outside, the suspect was captured by Dallas Police, attempting to flee the scene in the stolen vehicle. the security guard, who was known as a happy, fun-loving individual who loved his job, was transported to Methodist Hospital where he later died. “i was stopped at the red light at Overton and lancaster. i looked over and saw the commotion and a woman ran out of the bank waving her hands as to signal to people not to come in the bank. i heard multiple shots and drove away once the red light changed,” the witness said.

True Friends

riends are more than m e r e l y social acquaintances that share mutual interests. true friends help, care, sacrifice, and commit. they take upon themselves the hopes, hurts, joys, and pains of Geraldine those they love. Davidson-hooker Jonathan’s friendship with David was like that: “He loved him as he loved his own life” (v. 17). their friendship actually saved David’s life. saul’s hatred was so deep within him that Jonathan was forced to put his own life at risk for David’s sake. Our friendships, unlike Jonathan’s friendship with David, may not force us to perform remarkable acts of courage. But each of us needs to be willing to make sacrifices for the sake of our friends. the Christian faith has always encouraged friendships of the David and Jonathan kind. solomon advised, “some friends play at friendship but a true friend sticks closer than one’s nearest kin” (Prov. 18:24). Paul loved timothy and said of him, “How like a son with a father he has served with me in the work of the gospel” (Phil. 2:22). and the earliest Christians “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship . . . “ (acts 2:42, emphasis added). the Christian life is not meant to be, and actually cannot be, lived alone. we need our friends. and our friends may need us, big-time.

Notes From Union Hope

he subject of church school was “respecting Community standards” ruth 4:1-10. another word for standards would be “principles” values that govern a Eld lloyd T. Morgan person or a people’s behavior. the governing principles laid down by God to israel was that all the land that israel occupied belonged to Him, and the land was to be kept in the possession of israel. Naomi wanted to dispose of her husband’s land but the standard was that a near kinsman redeemer had to buy it. there was one kinsman nearer to Naomi than Boaz but when he found that ruth came with the land he gave Boaz the right to take his place. with the passing of a sandal the deal was struck. the lesson is a picture of our kinsman redeemer Christ Jesus. Paul says in Gal 4:4-5 “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his son, made

of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.” the morning sermon was delivered by Pastor lloyd Morgan from the subject “Christ in you the hope of Glory” John. 14:18-20; Col. 1:25-27. the Holy spirit who is the third person of the God head seems to be the forgotten one in the church. He is essential in the life of the Christian, in fact He is so important that rom 8:9b says;”Now if any man have not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” in acts 19:1-2 we find a group of believers who have never heard of the Holy Ghost. these were people who were trying to follow Christ but did not have the equipping or indwelling of the Holy spirit. Dear reader do you know that you have Him? it is still true that believers must be Holy Ghost filled. Be blessed

Desoto scouts from troop 1141 took an active role in aiding the City of lancaster in keeping their city beautiful by participating in their adopt-a-Park program. this way, the scouts have an opportunity to exercise their citizenship in the community by volunteering to perform quarterly clean-ups at Kidsquare Park. this all-wood park is frequented by many day care centers as an ideal place to take toddlers for nearby field trips. troop 1141 is an active troop that makes an effort to camp at least once a month; therefore they understand the importance of preserving nature’s beauty, and the need to protect it for future generations. they apply the leave No trace principle (leaving it cleaner than you found it) as their way of maintaining the park. they realize that clean, well-kept parks are always an open invitation for visitors, birthday parties, and playtime adventure.

200 or 400. that means those other two automatBarBerShOP talk the ics we use to enjoy, like the 4x 100 and the 4x400 with leON SiMON there’s a good chance we won’t place in either. the glory days of usa track and field are over! the usa

’ve been preaching about the decline of the american athlete, and its happening right before our eyes, and we’re not aware of it. a German won MVP after playing against our top leon Simon Basketball players, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Dwayne wade and leBron James. well some how we’ve gotten past that and as i fore told the world Games are upon us. and america’s declining athlete is so obvious. there were certain things that were as sure as Death and taxes. we would sweep the sprints, first, second, and in most cases third in the 100meters, 200 and 400 meters. folks not only will we not swept them we won’t win not a ONE. usain Bolt was disqualified in the hundred meters. Break for the americans you say “NOt” Jamaica had 3 guys to qualify for the hundred meters the usa had one. a 21 year old unknown Jamaican Johan Blake won the hundred, while walter Dix of the usa was a distant second. i will go out on a limb and say we will not place in

used to win every thing from the 800m down, not happening. Nick symmonds our best hope in the 800m could get a second or third, can’t win. it’s not all dome and gloom, our ladies might bring us a little respectability. we still have some ladies that could bale us out; just like they’ve been doing in soccer, softball, Basketball and volleyball. allyson felix is attempting to win the 200 and 400meters. in the 400 her toughest competitor could be teammate and former university of texas quarter miler sanya richards. the 200 and 400 meter double has only been done once by Dallas’ own Michael Johnson. Michael had world records in both 200and 400, his 200 meter record has been broken by usain BOlt. i don’t know if allyson can get enough rest to complete that double. it will be tough not only physically tough; the competition is strong and plus the 200and 400 has to be the two toughest sprints in track and field. if by chance we get first and second in the 400,savour the moment and remember what you were doing because it could become a trivia question and it definitely won’t happen every world Game or Olympic.

i have no idea if it’s the food or the video games but our athletes are declining at a rapid pace. we’re closing swimming pools; charging $25 an hour to use park facilities; mind you although they say it’s illegal, you can still get drunk on the park and throw beer cans every where and the city will have a clean up crew out there to clean up free. But if you want to use the park to train a kid it’ll cost you $25 an hour and you’d better clean up. so don’t blame the athletes blame the parents for voting for the politicians that make these laws. i’ll bet you don’t have to pay in Jamaica.

streets and finally, to its present location – 2420 Metropolitan avenue. throughout the past 128 years, the lord has indeed blessed the saint Paul a.M.E. Church and its members. the membership has flourished and witnessed many momentous events serving the needs of our members and the community surrounding the church. “where there is no vision, the people perish” is the word on which the church was built; thus, it is the vision of the st.
