On the Block and Making A Difference: Rev. Fred Conwright BY: LOLA SEARCY

T

his week we are shining our “On the Block and Making a Difference” spotlight on Rev. Fred Conwright, Sr. Many of our readers may not know him as Pastor Fred Conwright. But he may be more familiar to many of us as one of the owners of Two Podners Restaurant who sports a sailor’s cap whenever he is away from the pulpit. I was curious to get to know the man behind the sailor cap and the mouth-watering meals his staff serves at any one of his restaurants, and the man the congregation at Greater Mt. Hebron Baptist Church calls Pastor. He hails from Ore City, Texas, a small town located in Upshur County, just 13 miles northeast of Gilmer, Texas. He is the oldest of 9 children. He lost his father at the tender age of

15, and ever since he has always been the head of his family; the one his mother and siblings look up to for strength and support. So, he graduated from Ore City High School one day and headed to Dallas the next day. He says he came to Dallas to better himself. And he’s done just that! Now, you know I had to ask him about the sailor cap he always wears. He told me he once owned a PASTOR FRED CONWRIGHT seafood place, so he started wearing the cap. name, they know the cap and they In 1981, when he and his partner often say, “You’re the man who owns James Runnels opened Two Podners Two Podners restaurant in Dallas.” restaurant, he would always wear his And, if you haven’t stopped by a Two sailor cap. Troubled But Not Distressed Psalms 50:17

“Call upon me in the day of trouble and I will deliver you and you will honor me, says the Lord.”

A

n email message I received the other day HENRY NELSON concerning the writing of the weekly message troubled me, but I did not get distressed. I knew it was the devil interfering in Gods business so I just moved on. Paul reminds us that even though you may think you are at the end of your rope, you are never without hope. Paul faced all kinds of troubles, hardships and adversity for the sake of the Lord Jesus and His kingdom’s ministries. Regardless of the risks, humiliations and trials you can see all of these as opportunities for Jesus to demonstrate His greater power, purpose and plan in and

through us for His greater glory. Too many people fall in to the trap of feeling like they are a victim of their circumstances. An article I read in US News and World Report said: "Expert victimologists estimate that 91.2% of people in North America and Europe now qualify as victims, at least in their own minds. This is because hurt feelings keep spreading, and "society" keeps grinding us down. Here are a few guidelines for overcoming trouble instead of allowing yourself to become a victim of your troubles: 1.Praise God for the trouble: He has allowed in your life as He knows what is best in every situation. David wrote in Psalm 46:1-4 "God is our refuge and strength. A very present help in the time of trouble. Therefore, we will not fear. Though the earth be removed and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea. Though the waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. There is a river

the streams thereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High."Amen! 2. Rest: Praise God and realize that our God is sovereign who can do whatever He pleases. It is the right for a sovereign, omnipotent, and omniscient God to know how trouble will work for the good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose. God is on the throne He does whatever He pleases. Job was able to say, "Though he slay me yet will I praise Him." Praising God helps us draw upon the goodness, love and all sufficient grace of Christ so that we are able to rejoice in our infirmities for when we are weak, then He is strong. The less we have the more we depend on Him for our strength, hope and will in our lives. 3. Relinquish your rights: Jesus said in Matthew 5:3, "Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Amen! "The poor is from the Greek ptokas, a noun that means poor in this world’s goods; a beggar, desperately

ashamed even to allow his identity to be known. It is not just poor, it is begging poor. He is absolutely incapable, totally dependent on grace. "In spirit means with reference to the inner man not the body. That is all. He is begging on the inside, not necessarily on the outside. Psalms 34:18 says, “The Lord is near to those that have a broken heart and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” Psalms 51:17 says, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God. You will not despise." God identifies with people who beg on the inside, not people who are self-sufficient, not people who think they can work out their own salvation. Poor in spirit does not mean lazy or quiet or indifferent or lacking enthusiasm or passive. A poor in spirit individual is one with no sense of self-sufficiency." he Dallas Mavericks have been the center of my attention since the inception of the organization back in 1980, when then businessmen Don Carter and Norm Sunju petitioned the NBA to bring an NBA team to Dallas. Before the Mavericks, the last professional basketball team in Dallas had been the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association. The Chaparrals moved to San Antonio in

1973 and became the San Antonio Spurs. The Mavericks came to Dallas at a time when the Metroplex was ready for more than just the Dallas Cowboys, and at that time, the winless Texas Rangers. The Mavs came in with a splash that wet up the floor and not in a good way. They were “Terrible” with a capital “T.” Abdoul Jalaney was one of the team players at the time. I am certain that Mr. Jerry Bob Chambers has touched the lives of thousands and thousands of young men and women as an Educator at Booker T. Advice Column: Ask Karen Hollie Resolutions

A

t this time of year it is the fading practice of many people to reflect on the year past, anticipate the year to come, and create a list of New Year's resolutions. I say "fading practice" because, in fact, I'm not sure there are very many people who actually do this anymore - we just talk about it. It used to be that we would pat ourselves GERALDINE on the back if we had good DAVIDSON-HOOKER intentions, but now we've taken a further step backward and are content to merely think about having good intentions. I can't help but remember the words of the Pastor of my childhood church who often commented, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." So let's revisit resolutions. Obviously, thinking about resolutions requires us to consider our priorities - serious New Year's resolutions will certainly involve making promises to be faithful to do those things which are really important to us. Jesus has this in mind when He taught us to "Seek first the kingdom of God.” Matters related to the spirit are more important that matters of matter. In addition, helping us identifies our priorities, several times throughout Scripture we find the phrase, "one thing" - here are four examples: David acknowledged the importance of worship: "One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple." (Psalms 27:4) Worship is a priority. When Jesus was confronted with the man we call the "Rich Young Ruler", he told him what needed to be done to inherit eternal life: "'One thing you lack,' he said. 'Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'" (Mark 10:21) Giving to the needy is a priority. Then there's the wonderful story of Jesus' visit to the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. When Martha complained that Mary wasn't carrying her part of the work load, Jesus said, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:41,42) Learning from Jesus is a priority. Paul, not wanting to be boastful of his past, makes clear his own priority when he writes: ". . . one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:13, 14) Pressing forward is a priority. However, the concern today is not so much about making resolutions as it is about being resolute. This is how Webster’s dictionary defines this word: (rez' o-lut) "Having, or being characterized by, a decided purpose; determined; resolved; hence, bold; firm; steady." My suggestion is that as we face the coming year, let us take advice from the Scriptures and become resolute in these six areas: faith, doctrine, personal associations, prayer, giving, and serving.

here is a very interesting situation brewing in Nashville, Tennessee. It could be a power struggle of landmark proportion. I don’t think this is simply a LEON SIMON case of quarter back and coach not being able to co- exist; I have an idea Jeff Fisher could be the last bastion of hope for the Tom Brady, Troy Aikman type quarter backs. There has been tons of money put into that position, and even more money to keep that position healthy. Left tackles are getting record amounts of money to protect that stand up QB.

December 03, 2010

BarBerShOP talk with leON SimON I think there’s a new beast on the horizon; I think the Philadelphia Eagles tried to go to an Otto Graham, type in Kevin Kolb. And like Columbus going west to reach east, discovering a new land. Philadelphia could have started a revolution in the NFL that’s inevitable. Denver tried it with Tim Tebow and, I don’t know if Tebow will be able to make the transition but the writing is on the wall. They’re about to get the QB from under center, and put him in a shotgun that’s almost complete. They’re bringing in the “Wildcat” more and more that position is destined to get more athletic. Vince Young might not be disciplined enough to be a pioneer for that position change, but believe me its coming. The new wave is to get more production out of

that position. The colleges are the pioneers. Cam Newton , the young man from Auburn had 6 games of over 150 yds. rushing; at 6’6 – 250 pounds , extremely athletic and has a cannon for an arm. Ohio State’s Terrell Pryor 6’6 – 233 lbs. is almost a carbon copy of Newton. Oregon’s Darron Thomas, 6’3 212 is not as big as Newton, and Pryor, neither is Michael Vick, and he’s doing it on Sundays now. If an offensive minded coach would commit to the idea, Vince could do what Vick is doing. Fisher is trying to change him. Texas did too until they realized he is what he is, and won a National Championship. They beat the guy Fisher wished Vince was, Matt Linert. Where is Matt now?

www.dfwelitenews.com

I’m not saying all of these young men are headed for stardom. When they put the forward pass in all of those guys were not as efficient as Otto Graham, that’s the way the game went. There is always the danger of these guys getting injured running, more and then these guys bolt to the ground like the Cowboys did Tony Romo. These guys can still slide feet first when they get in harm’s way. I think the Cowboys tried to dabble in this concept with Quincy Carter, and maybe as early as Reggie Collier. Neither experiment was successful, but how many stand up quarterback did the Cowboys go through between Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman? This is not a documentary – just Barber shop talk. THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!

Pastor L.T.Morgan from the subject “Turning testing into Temptation” James 1:13-17. The mature believer is patient in trials. Sometimes the trials are tastings on the outside, and sometimes they are temptations on the inside. Trials may be tests sent by God, or they may be temptations sent by Satan and encouraged by our own fallen nature. It is this second aspect of trials temptations on the inside - that James dealt with in the text. What is the relationship between testing’s without and temptations within?" When our circumstances are difficult, we may find ourselves complaining against God, questioning His love, and resisting His will. At this point, Satan provides us with an opportunity to escape the difficulty. This opportunity is a temptation. A temptation is an opportunity to accomplish a good thing in a bad way, out of the will of God. It is not wrong to eat; but if you consider stealing the food, you are tempting yourself to sin. Be steadfast: God bless and keep you.

he church School lesson was “God delivers and Protect” Ps.91:1-6,916. The Psalmist began this psalm saying “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty”. For the rest of the psalm he speaks of the benefits, blessings and protection that those that “live” in the ELD LLOYD T. presence of God MORGAN enjoy. Although many may desire all the promises of God, they don’t want to abide in his presence. The Psalmist personalizes his relationship with the Almighty with the pronoun “I” and the adjective “my” when he refers to God. God wants to have this personal relationship with everyone that is willing to submit to his will by accepting the Lord Jesus Christ his son as their saviour. The morning message was delivered by

elcome to the weeken d, baaaaby! Big ups to our Dallas Mavericks... 12 wins 4 losses to start the year...I was reflecting on Miami and its allstar trio of Chris Bosh, Dewayne Wade and KEVAN BROWNING Lebron James... So far the Heat are barely winning half they're games. There is something to be said about TEAM! Speaking of teams...Am I the only one who sees the Cowboys rollin to Indianapolis and snatching a victory this Sunday (3:15)from Peyton Manning and his Colts??? The Boyz DEWAYNE WADE should be 3-0 under Jason Garrett, but we all saw that crappage last weekend. As my favorite country comedian Larry "The Cable Guy" says, "Get her done"! I love the episodes of "Real Housewives Of Atlanta"...My partner Bloodhound Benny is reporting that Kim Zolciak of Bravo's "Housewives" is engaged to Atlanta Falcons star Kroy Biermann, the father of her unborn child. "They wanted to announce it in a national magazine, but Kim was so excited that she told a couple of close friends about it," a source told the website. "Obviously, they are both really happy about both the baby and their engagement and cannot wait to start their new lives together." The source added that Kroy, 25, bought Kim, 32, a "substantial" ring she has yet to wear in public. I know she won't be "tardy for the party"!!! YO, Hip Hop Headz! It's been a long time since Nate Dogg, known for his hook singing, NATE DOGG has recorded a lyric. In December 2007

and then again in September 2008, Nate suffered two massive strokes that left him partially paralyzed. According to his good friend, Warren G, he is currently undergoing WARREN G rehabilitation to simply learn basic motor skills including walking and talking. Say a prayer for Nate Dogg, I'll let you know where you can help him as son as it's announced! Did you peep the latest on Montell "This Is How We Do It" Jordan! According to his most recent Twitter messages, he has officially given up R&B and will become a licensed minister. He will become the new worship pastor at Victory World Church in Norcross, Georgia. Now that's how it should be done! You know America is a forgiving place, especially if you have talent. R. Kelly really made a comeback on the Soul Train Awards Sunday night. He was at peak performance as he commanded the stage for the entire beginning of the show. It appears that time off has been good for his career because the ladies were yelling and applauding louder than anyone else. All of his controversial dealings with under age girls has been forgotten and he's putting the audience on their feet all over again. Look for R&B Queen Mary J. Blige to appear on in the MARY J. BLIGE Big Screen adaptation of the hit Broadway Musical "Rock Of Ages"! Congrat's to Cincinnati Bengal reciver Chad Ocho Cinco on his engagement to Evelyn Lozada. Ms. Lozade was formerly the long time companion of fromer NBA star Antoine Walker and appeared in Shauni O'Neals "Basketball Wives" on VH-1! Happy Birthday to you and Celebs this week:Robert "Benson" Guillauimeis 73, Chuck Mangione is 70, Luther Ingram is 66, Alfre Woodard, Maxine Nightengale and Shuggie Otis is 57, Sean "Diddy" Coombs and Nelly is 32!
