Running from Council Grove to Cassoday, the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway (travelks.com/ksbyways/flint-hills) offers incredible views of the native grasses and flowers of the tallgrass prairie – one of the last remaining such landscapes in America. Much of the land along the Byway looks as it did thousands of years ago when the Kaw, Osage and other native tribes lived there. The Native Stone Scenic Byway (travelks.com/ ksbyways/native-stone), along K-99 north of Emporia, highlights the natural J Kcraftwork L wonder of rock formations and of stone masons who built their

communities J Kwith L native stone.

It’s sometimes hard to believe, but most of the land you’ll see in the Flint Hills is privately owned. Please respect the land and the landowners. In order to keep the Hills available for future visitors, please abide by these guidelines:

Stay on marked roadways. If you must get a closer look at something, drive to the nearest farm or ranch and ask permission.

Use trash cans, not roadside ditches for trash.

Drive slowly on gravel roads and pull over to let large trucks or farm vehicles by.

When in doubt, yield the rightof-way to others, i.e., cowboys on horseback, cattle.
