THE FLINT HILLS The Flint Hills are a remarkable expanse in North America that has been 250 million years in the making. Much of Kansas was covered by the vast Permian inland sea. This shallow sea was rich in life. As the ancient plants and animals died, they dropped to the sea floor, and over time, became the limestone and chert (flint) deposits seen today. Over millions of years, the seas drained and erosion sculpted the landscape into rugged, high escarpments and gentle rolling slopes. With its thin, rocky soil, the Flint Hills became a vast NEBR ASKA grassland, and its rich ecosystems allowed human activity that can KANSAS be traced back at least 12,000 years. MARYSVILLE
