contra las plagas de las ratas The Offering to Prevent Plagues of Rats

os menorquines de siglos atrás dependían tanto de las cosechas para su subsistencia que hacían todo lo posible para “prevenir” que estas se malograran, aunque esto implicara oraciones y ofrendas religiosas que compensaran los pecados cometidos por los mortales y protegieran de plagas y malas condiciones climatológicas. Una de las medidas más curiosas es el llamado Ciri de ses Rates (cirio de las ratas), que da nombre a una cofradía que se encargaba de recaudar fondos para confeccionar un cirio que se ofrecía cada año a la Virgen de Monte Toro para que protegiera el campo de las plagas de ratas y otros animales. La cofradía del Ciri de ses Rates está documentada ya en la segunda mitad del siglo XVI y para representarla, se elegían personas del estamento ciudadano y del estamento payés. Otra medida de las instituciones contra las plagas consistía en pagar algo de dinero a los que entregaran patas de aves y cuervos, y así controlar su población.

One of the most curious methods is the so-called Ciri de ses Rates, which was a society that was responsible for raising funds to make a large candle that was offered each year to the Virgin of Monte Toro to protect the fields from plagues of rats, pests and other animals. The Ciri de ses Rates society is documented in the second half of the 16th century and to be a part of it, people were chosen from both social classes, the upper-class as well as peasants. Another custom that was practiced to prevent the plagues was to pay some money to those who handed in the legs of birds and crows, thus controlling their population.
