INTRODUCTION

MOIS EUROPÉEN DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE AU LUXEMBOURG QUATRIÈME ÉDITION

Depuis les années 70, mais surtout depuis les années 90, la photographie bénéficie, même aux yeux du grand public, d’une reconnaissance internationale comme expression artistique à part entière. Les grandes capitales de l’Europe, comme Paris, Berlin ou encore Vienne ont leur festival consacré à la photographie. Sur une période de deux mois en général, ces villes mettent sur pied de 120 à 200 expositions par capitale, autour de la photographie dans les lieux les plus divers. Les grands musées et institutions y participent tout comme les galeries privées et les collections d’entreprise. Comme si souvent, Paris a été l’initiatrice de ce genre de projet, de sorte que la France continue d’occuper une place de choix dans la mise en vitrine de la création contemporaine dans le domaine de la photographie. Le succès du récent Salon de la Photographie à Paris en témoigne.

En 2004, un accord signé entre les maires de ces villes – Klaus Wowereit pour Berlin, Bertrand Delanoë pour Paris et Mi chael Häupl pour Vienne – avait créé le Mois Européen de la Photographie, une collaboration visant à créer des synergies dans la mise en place de projets photographiques communs. Les « petites » capitales de l’Union européenne ont emboîté le pas : Bratislava, Ljubljana et bien sûr la ville de Luxembourg à travers Café-Crème asbl.

Dès 2000, notre association avait cherché à donner une nouvelle dimension aux contacts internationaux qu’elle entretenait depuis sa fondation en 1984 ; on a ainsi pu organiser une série d’expositions à la Chapelle du Rham en collaboration avec le Centre Culturel Français, l’École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie d’Arles et appuyé par la Ville de Dudelange. En 2005, notre association est acceptée comme membre du Mois Européen de la Photographie, à côté des villes de Rome et de Moscou.

L’initiative de créer un Mois Européen de la Photographie avait été prise en 2004 sous l’impulsion de la Maison

Européenne de la Photographie et de son directeur Jean-Luc Monterosso, soutenu, à son début, par le Museumspädagogischer Dienst de Berlin et le département culturel de la Ville de Vienne.

Depuis, ce groupe s’est créé des structures toujours plus solides au point de se doter de statuts et de s’engager, encore plus que dans le passé, dans la mise en place de grands projets européens autour de la photographie avec de nouveaux alliés : Budapest et, si cela se confirme, Madrid.

Entre 2006 et 2012, trois expositions internationales ont vu le jour qui toutes tournaient autour de la difficulté d’arrêter le statut de la photographie dans un monde bouleversé quasi annuellement par l’arrivée de nouvelles technologies et l’hybridation des médias. Montrées à la Maison Européenne de la Photographie, au Gropius Bau de Berlin, au Musa de Vienne et au Mudam au Luxembourg pour ne citer que quelques lieux, ces expositions au titre évocateur de Mutations ont apporté leur contribution à la compréhension de la photographie et à faire admettre la place qu’elle occupe aujourd’hui sur le plan artistique.

Le Luxembourg a toujours ce privilège de pouvoir associer, sur un territoire exigu, différents partenaires : le Ministère de la Culture, la Ville de Luxembourg, les institutions de la ville ou les musées nationaux, les galeries privées ou les institutions financières se complètent quand il s’agit de mettre en place un événement comme celui du Mois Européen de la Photographie. La ville de Luxembourg a ainsi confirmé son soutien à cette initiative et, pour cette quatrième édition, propose le nouvel espace du Cercle à un volet de l’exposition principale du Mois, complémentaire de l’exposition principale qui aura lieu au MNHA et qui s’intitule Dis tUR B ANces. Cette exposition qui s’interroge sur la place de la fiction et de la réalité dans la photographie, notamment dans le paysage urbain, se décline sur trois volets

dont le troisième sera montré à la Fondation de l’Architecture et de l’Ingénierie.

On sait que depuis la création du CNA dans les années 80 et surtout depuis le succès obtenu par le Casino, Forum d’art contemporain avec l’exposition The 90s, A Family of Man ? en 1997, première exposition thématique au Luxembourg autour de la photographie plasticienne contemporaine, la photographie a fait son chemin au Grand Duché, au point de devenir une forme d’expression incontournable de l’art contemporain dans les musées et institutions du pays.

Dès les années 80, les pionniers d’une nouvelle forme d’expression photographique comme la galerie Nei Liicht et sa directrice Danielle Igniti, avaient montré le chemin en privilégiant la photographie plasticienne, terme inventé pour désigner une photographie qui s’éloignait du petit format, de la photographie de presse ou du studio pour prétendre aux cimaises des grands musées en rivalisant avec la peinture.

Certaines galeries privées au Luxembourg, comme la galerie Clairefontaine ont ouvert, dés les années 90, un espace consacré exclusivement à la photographie, d’autres, comme Reding / Nosbaum, Schweitzer ou encore la galerie Bernard Ceysson ont peu à peu contribué à faire accepter par le public averti la cohabitation de l’image photographique avec la peinture ou la sculpture dans ses formes contemporaines.

Les banques et cabinets d’avocats ont à leur tour contribué à la visibilité de la photographie. Ainsi, la Fortis, la Deutsche Bank, la Dexia, tout comme la Banque de Luxembourg ont dans le passé mis leurs cimaises à la disposition de la photographie. N’oublions pas non plus la formidable collection de la BCEE constituée à partir des années 90, laquelle tend un arc passionnant entre la photographie d’un Edward Stei chen (également présent dans les collections du MNHA) et les expressions contemporaines. Mentionnons bien évidemment la collection de photographie contemporaine de

Arendt & Medernach qui s’est constituée en collaboration avec Café-Crème Art Médiation.

Après l’ouverture du château d’eau avec la collection des Bit ter Years à Dudelange et dans l’attente de la réouverture de la Family of Man à Clervaux – toujours en restauration - le choix de chefs-d’œuvre de la photographie au Luxembourg gagnera encore en importance. Dans l’attente, une belle initiative de la Ville de Clervaux – à travers son asbl Cité de l’Image – installe la photographie dans la rue.

Relevons la première participation de la Deutsche Bank Luxembourg et de la galerie de la Brasserie de Bitburg (Haus Beda) ; ce qui donne une dimension un peu plus internationale au Mois luxembourgeois.

Parmi les autres nouveautés de l’édition 2013, on comptera le Prix European Month of Photography Arendt Award, attribué à Dionisio González pour son œuvre, ainsi que le colloque co-organisé avec le Laboratoire d’arts visuels de l’Université du Luxembourg sur les nouvelles représentations paysagères et urbaines et sur la politique d’exposition de la photographie (au CCR Neumünster).

Le chapelet des participants ne sera pas moins impressionnant. On doit ainsi se féliciter de pouvoir réunir de nouveau, sur plusieurs semaines, les meilleures initiatives (une vingtaine de lieux) au Luxembourg dans le domaine de la photographie et des arts visuels en général.

EUROPEAN MONTH OF PHOTOGRAPHY IN LUXEMBOURG FOURTH EDITION

Since the 1970s, and particularly since the 1990s, photography has internationally been acknowledged as a form of artistic expression in its own right. European capitals, such as Paris, Berlin or Vienna for instance, have their own festivals dedicated to photography. Over a period of two months, these cities organize between 120 and 200 photography exhibitions each in the most diverse locations. Well established museums and institutions take part in the events as well as private galleries and corporations. While the project was initiated by Paris –and France still is at the forefront when it comes to showcasing contemporary photogra­phic creation, as the recent success of the International Photographic Salon in Paris, last November has proved– other European capitals soon manifested their interest.

In 2004, Klaus Wowereit, Michael Häupl and Bertrand Delanoë, mayors of the cities of Berlin, Vienna and Paris respectively, signed an agreement to create the European Month of Photo­graphy thus laying the foundation for future collaborations in the field of the exhibition of photography. The “smaller” European capitals were soon to follow: Bratislava, Ljubljana, and of course, the City of Lux embourg through the association Café-Crème.

As of 2000, Café-Crème was aiming at conferring a new dimension to its network of international contacts that had been growing since the creation of the association in 1984. In this context, a series of exhibitions were showed at the Chapelle du Rham, resulting from collaborations with the Centre culturel français, the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles and supported by the Town of Dudelange. In 2005, our association was accepted as a member of the European Month of Photography, together with the cities of Rome and Moscow.

The initiative to create a European Month of Photography ema­ nated in 2004 from the Maison Européenne de la Photo­graphie (Paris) and its director Jean-Luc Monterosso. It was sustained, at the beginning, by the Museumspädagogischer Dienst, Berlin, and the cultural department of the City of Vienna. Ever since, this

group has been fortifying its structures, defining and adopting binding terms of reference, more committed than ever to the instigation of large scale photographic exhibition projects with new partners: Budapest, and, to be confirmed, Madrid.

Between 2006 and 2012, three international exhibitions were conceived, revolving around the difficulty to define the status of photography in a world marked by changing technologies and the hybridisation of the media. They were shown at the Maison Eu ropéenne de la Photographie in Paris, at the Gropius Bau in Berlin, at the Musa in Vienna, and at the Mudam in Luxembourg, to name only a few of the venues. With the meaningful title Mutations, the exhibitions contributed to the comprehension of photography and to establish its rank on an artistic level today.

Luxembourg has always been privileged with its ability to connect on a small territory a broad range of cultural players: the Ministry of Culture, the City of Luxembourg, municipal institutions and national museums, private galleries as well as financial institutions team up in order to make possible an event such as the European Month of Photography. The City of Luxembourg has thus confirmed its support for the initiative, and for the fourth edition, is proposing the new space of the Cercle Municipal to complement EMOP’s main exhibition DistURBANces at the Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art (MNHA). The exhibition questions the role of fiction and reality in photography, more particularly in the urban landscape. It comprehends three different parts; the last one being shown at the Fondation de l’Architecture et de l’Ingénierie.

Since the creation of the Centre national de l’audiovisuel (CNA) in 1989, and above all following the success of the first exhibition of contemporary art photography The 90s, A Family of Man? at the Casino, Forum d’art contemporain, photography has come a long way in Luxembourg and is now a well established means of contemporary artistic expression, represented as such in all the major museums of the country.

Liicht showed the way, exhibiting almost exclusively contemporary art photography with its large scale formats aspiring to museum standards and competing with paintings. Private art galleries, such as the Galerie Clairefontaine opened spaces dedicated solely to photography already in the 1990s. Others, for instance Nosbaum and Reding, Schweitzer or Bernard Ceysson have more and more integrated photography into their programme and thus have contributed to the public acceptance of the medium as a contemporary art form in its own right.

Banks and law firms have been equally important in making photography visible in Luxembourg: Fortis, Deutsche Bank, Dexia as well as the Banque de Luxembourg have been welcoming the medium in their exhibition spaces for a number of years now.

Let’s not forget the Banque et Caisse d’Epargne de l’Etat (BCEE) and their fantastic collection constituted mainly in the 1990s and ranging from the turn of the XIXth century with photographs by Edward Steichen (also present in the collection of the MNHA) to contemporary forms of expression. More recently, there has been the important addition of Arendt & Medernach’s collection built in collaboration with Café-Crème Art Mediation.

A new space has opened in the fall of 2012: the water tower in Dudelange and its permanent exhibition The Bitter Years; The Family of Man in Clervaux –currently still being restored– will open again in July 2013, meanwhile the town of Clervaux with its initiative Cité de l’Image is taking photography to the streets. The possibilities of experiencing photographic masterworks in Luxembourg are growing continually.

We would like to stress the first participation of the Deutsche Bank and the Bitburg Brewery through its gallery Haus Beda, conferring a more international dimension to the European Month of Photography in Luxembourg.

Among the novelties for the 2013 edition, there is the European Month of Photography Arendt Award attributed to Dionisio

González, as well as a symposium organised in collaboration with the Laboratoire d’arts visuels of the University of Luxembourg about the new representations of rural and urban landscapes as well as the politics of exhibiting photography.

The line of participants is, again, impressive, and we are very pleased to gather and present one more time, over several weeks, the most noteworthy initiatives in Luxembourg in the field of photography and the visual arts.

À l’occasion de la quatrième édition du Mois Européen de la Photographie au Luxembourg – qui regroupe cette année comme pour les éditions précédentes une vingtaine de musées, institutions, espaces privés et galeries du Luxembourg à partir de la fin du mois d’avril – le MNHA offre ses cimaises à un événement-clé : DistURBANces – LandEscape, une exposition qui s’interroge sur la place de la fiction et de la réalité dans la photographie notamment dans le paysage et le paysage urbain.

Le musée dispose d’une intéressante collection de photographies, notamment celle léguée par la Fondation Eastman Kodak dans le cas d’Edward Steichen, et c’est donc tout naturellement qu’il a évolué ces dernières années autour de la photographie et ses manifestations les plus contemporaines.

L’exposition DistURBANces, une des manifestations phares de cette édition est le résultat d’une collaboration de différents curateurs des villes partenaires du Mois Européen de la Photographie à savoir Berlin, Bratislava, Budapest, Paris, Vienne, Ljubljana et Luxembourg, une association des principales institutions de ces capitales européennes qui se dédient à la photographie comme expression artistique. Le Luxembourg y est représenté à travers l’association Café-Crème asbl, ses fondateurs et directeurs Paul di Felice et Pierre Stiwer.

Après Mutations 1,2,3 (2006-2011), expositions sur le changement de paradigme de la photographie montrées dans des lieux prestigieux comme la Maison Européenne de la Photographie à Paris ou la Berlinische Galerie à Berlin, cette quatrième exposition continue dans cette voie en s’interrogeant sur la relation entre fiction et réalité photographique en relation avec les représentations urbaines et paysagères. Le projet, qui met l’accent sur différents aspects curatoriaux dans chaque ville, présente un total de 27 artistes internationaux qui suivent différents axes thématiques, à partir de l’analyse de la vie réelle dans son environnement socio-politique (voire les abus de l’Homme sur la nature) jusqu’aux visions utopiques et dystopiques.

L’exposition DistURBANces se décline en trois volets : celui consacré au paysage est montré au MNHA et regroupe des photographes émergents de France, d’Islande, de Finlande, d’Allemagne, d’Autriche, d’Australie, de Serbie, de Slovénie, de Hongrie et du Luxembourg.

Les deux autres volets sur les utopies urbaines et les mondes virtuels et artificiels sont montrés au Cercle de la Ville et à la Fondation de l’architecture et de l’ingénierie.

Le titre fait allusion à la fois à ce qui dérange et ce qui est de l’ordre de l’urbain. La croissance des cités industrielles à partir du XIXème siècle, la naissance des mégalopoles d’aujourd’hui dans ce qu’on appelait jadis le tiers-monde, a imposé à la nature une présence toujours croissante et envahissante. L’homme contemporain – sa nostalgie d’un retour à la nature en témoigne – a de plus en plus de mal à retrouver une nature authentique. Comme pour le monde animal qui se retrouve cantonné dans le zoo derrière des barreaux ou dans les réserves, la nature elle-même devient une sorte de second-monde, un espace cloisonné et préservé, redéfini selon les normes du cirque, du spectacle, de ce qui est donné à voir.

La nature subit, dans la photographie, une sorte de mise en abîme en ce sens qu’elle est mise en scène, devient décor, coulisse ou même reproduction de ce qu’on souhaite ce qu’elle soit. Elle est exposée , mise à distance, contemplée dans son aliénation à elle-même.

La photographie se saisit de cette aliénation de la nature de différentes manières à travers une forme de distanciation à la fois ironique et tragique. À l’interrogation inquiétante sur la disparition de la création originelle se substitue la conscience d’un mode de réappropriation de la nature et de la réalité urbaine à travers l’image.

En traitant de la même façon le réel, le virtuel et les mondes simulés, de nombreux artistes explorent les 12

phénomènes de la réalité artificielle et médiatisée dans un contexte sémantique de visualisation accru. Par la dépendance croissante du virtuel dans la vie quotidienne, ces pratiques artistiques de réalité mixte – dans laquelle le monde fictif est présenté comme impossible à distinguer de la réalité, et le réel au plus près d’un monde irréel voire surréel – tendent à briser les limites entre le réel et le virtuel.

L’exposition du Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art se concentre particulièrement sur le thème de la représentation de la nature aujourd’hui en pointant aussi bien les mutations sociétales et politiques que le changement de paradigme de la représentation du paysage dans la photographie contemporaine.

Le Finlandais Ilkka ​​Halso utilise des images numériques construites pour faire face à la question de sauvegarde de la nature. En imaginant le stockage de la nature dans des entrepôts gigantesques, il exprime notre relation ambivalente envers la survie de notre planète. Est-ce que la nature doit être évacuée et préservée dans des musées, doit-elle devenir une marchandise afin d’être préservée de la destruction ? À travers cette vision métaphorique des photographies, Halso pose cette question sans vraiment vouloir donner une réponse concrète. Ses photographies sont des bulles échappatoires d’un quotidien écologiquement menaçant.

Comme chez Halso, le passé, le présent et le futur semblent fusionner dans les photographies de la série Leak de Rosemary Laing. En photographiant de façon analogue une structure en bois symbolisant le squelette d’un habitat qu’elle place à l’envers dans le paysage et qu’elle déplace de site en site, l’artiste provoque une collision entre la beauté idyllique du panorama et l’intrusion décalée de cette structure.

Ainsi se crée un dialogue entre la nature et la culture et des liens entre le passé et le présent.

Sous le nom de diStruktura, Milica Millcevic et Milan Bosnic présentent une série de photographies intitulées Face à Face, évoquant la représentation romantique de la nature dans un contexte socio-écologique contemporain.

La citation suivante, tirée d’une déclaration plus longue, attire l’attention sur cette ambiguïté : « Nous essayons de construire une vision élargie de la nature – comme la nature sublime, pseudo, ou synthétique dans des constellations urbaines – visant à définir les diverses relations, à la fois réelles et virtuelles, qui créent les réalités de la vie moderne et par rapport auxquelles l’art a une fonction importante qui consiste à pointer et à définir, sans signification utilitaire, le drame qui évolue autour de nous. » La nature, même si elle n’est qu’à trois kilomètres d’un site urbain comme dans les expériences de Henry Da vid Thoreau à la fin du XIXème siècle, est un lieu idéal pour plonger dans une sorte d’essentialité et d’introspection de l’individu dans ses relations avec la société. La photographie des bois du Luxembourgeois Robert Hor nung, dans sa série Walden (hommage à l’écrivain américain Thoreau), devient une affirmation paradoxale de la beauté banale en fusionnant deux images en diptyques de grandes dimensions. L’effet du déplacement dans ces juxtapositions subtiles dépend ici de l’engagement de la réception des spectateurs.

Même si le concept est différent chez Gerco de Ruij ter, photographe néerlandais, on retrouve formellement des correspondances avec le travail de Hornung. En renouvelant le paysage hollandais avec sa série Baumschule, il va au-delà des conventions spatiales et des représentations horizontales pour nous montrer des vues qui s’apparentent des all over de la peinture abstraite.

L’espace et le temps sont également des éléments prêtant à confusion dans la nouvelle série de Silvio Galassi qu’il élabore à partir de vieux négatifs de photographies de paysages anonymes. Comme des palimpsestes, ses photographies montrent de manière poétique et parfois surréaliste des paysages effacés comme des traces visuelles presque abstraites de différentes époques.

La jeune artiste allemande Anna Vogel travaille aussi sur des archives photographiques, principalement trouvées sur Internet sur lesquelles elle intervient de façon très légère en enlevant des éléments significatifs qui décontextualisent l’image en lui donnant une toute autre signification. La présentation par séries et par photos regroupées est essentielle dans la conception de ce travail qui nous interpelle aussi par son caractère mnémonique.

Une autre artiste luxembourgeoise, Justine Blau, exprime une vision utopique d’un Arcadia contemporain par l’assemblage de différentes images de paysages touristiques, téléchargés à partir d’Internet et rassemblées dans des photographies ou des installations. À travers ses dispositifs ludiques, elle défie non seulement le passage du naturel à l’artificiel vis-à-vis de notre relation à la nature, mais critique aussi le politique et les médias, en déstabilisant nos idées reçues de la topographie et des représentations paysagères.

Dans la même veine, Thomas Wrede, comme Justine Blau, met également l’accent sur l’étrangeté des lieux en inventant de nouveaux paysages hybrides. La particularité de Wrede, cependant, est de mettre en place, par le biais de la démarche photographique, en jouant sur l’échelle et les points de vue, une esthétique énigmatique auratique qui crée une opposition entre différents espaces, et qui soulève la question de l’incompatibilité spatiale et temporelle. Même si la dimension écologique est simplement 14

implicite, il est néanmoins possible d’y voir une dichotomie entre le vivant et l’environnement bâti. Le rapport entre culture et nature prend des dimensions surréalistes chez les artistes slovènes Jasmina Cibic et Andrej Osterman. Si l’une fait apparaître d’énormes animaux en décalage avec le paysage, l’autre intègre digitalement des éléments miniatures, par exemple un hélico en Lego, dans des paysages urbains et naturels.

En contrastant radicalement avec ce type d’esthétique plus formaliste ou ludique mais articulant des déplacements thématiques similaires, les photographies de Pé tur Thomsen intitulées Paysage importé dénoncent le pouvoir des politiques énergétiques de l’Islande en révélant la destruction de la nature ambiante. Pour l’artiste cette intervention n’a pas seulement des conséquences politiques, écologiques, éthiques mais aussi politiques.

Les dimensions éthiques et esthétiques du paysage sont aussi thématisées dans la série Anamnésie Land de la Française Virginie Maillard qui présente des lieux qui n’existent pas mais qui se réfèrent à l’histoire. Ce contraste entre le lieu et le mot, elle l’explique comme cela : « Rapportées artificiellement, les enseignes lumineuses entament dans chaque image une réactivation de la mémoire des lieux, aujourd’hui en voie de reconversion ou bien laissés à l’abandon dans les paysages. Il s’opère ainsi un dialogue entre le mot et l’édifice. Les enseignes, symboles de la société de spectacle et de consommation participent à appuyer les décalages entre la fonction originelle du bâtiment et de ce qu’on pourrait nommer comme leur seconde chance d’exister dans la mémoire collective. » L’étrangeté et l’artificialité des lieux sont des thèmes récurrents dans le travail du photographe hongrois Gabor Arion Kudasz. Dans Green Area, il exploite la théâtralité d’endroits publics/privés éclairés comme des plateaux de

scènes. La présence de personnes SDF qui vivent dans ces espèces de non-lieux mystérieux, à la limite du fictionnel, donne à ses photographies un caractère dénonciateur de la déshumanisation des lieux urbains et des parcs.

Doutant de la réalité de ce que l’objectif montre, la photographie devient elle-même ce qui contribue à la disparition de la nature en ce sens qu’elle y substitue sa propre manière de la faire exister. L’image devient première et remplace de façon plus efficace et plus pertinente la nature elle-même. Dans une société de l’image où le moindre mouvement, le moindre événement social et privé est saisi, photographié, et diffusé, on peut se demander si la seule réalité qui reste finalement n’est pas celle de l’image ?

Compte tenu du flux d’images que nous consommons au quotidien, assis devant nos écrans, ces visions prennent un caractère artificiel et fictif. Avons-nous perdu notre lien avec la nature pour de bon ?

For the fourth edition of the European Month of Photography, the main event, DistURBANces _ LandEscapes, will be hosted by the Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art (MNHA).

The exhibition investigates the role of fiction and reality in photography, more particularly in landscape and in urban settings. The museum owns an interesting photography collection, specifically the Edward Steichen collection donated by the George Eastman Foundation on behalf of the artist. Thus the museum has evolved quite naturally over the past years around photography and its most contemporary manifestations.

DistURBANces is the result of a collaboration between the curators from the partner cities of the European Month of Photography (Bratislava, Berlin, Budapest, Ljubljana, Luxembourg and Vienna), and is composed of three parts: Fake and Virtual Worlds at the Cercle Cité, Urban Utopias and Dystopias at the Fondation de l’architecture et de l’ingénierie, and LandEscapes at the MNHA focusing on contemporary landscape photography and regrouping artists from Austria, Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Serbia and Slovenia.

The title alludes to the fact that the space of nature, since the beginning of industrialisation in the XIXth century, has continually diminished, while man has been searching for what he has lost ever since. Like the animal world, kept behind the bars of a zoo or in reservations, nature itself becomes a second-world, a confined and protected space, redefined according to rules and standards of circus, of show business, and of what is being shown.

Nature is the subject of a mise en abîme in the sense that nature is being staged, is becoming an ornament, a set or even a reproduction of what we want nature to be. It is exhibited, distanciated, contemplated in its alienation. Photography is investigating the subject of this alienation in different 18

ways, through a prism of irony and tragedy. The disquieting interrogation of the disappearance of original creation is substituted by an awareness of a mode of reappropriation of nature and urban reality through the image. The real world is treated in the same way as its virtual or simulated counterparts. Thus numerous artists explore the phenomena of an artificial and mediated reality in a semantic context of increased visuality. Through the growing dependency of the virtual in everyday life, these practices of mixed reality –in which the fictitious world is presented as impossible to distinguish from reality, and the real is touching the unreal and even the surreal– aim at breaking the frontiers of the real and the virtual.

The exhibition at the Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art, is focusing on the subject of the representation of nature today, showing the societal and political mutations as well as the change of paradigm of the representation of landscape in contemporary photography.

Thus, Finish artist Ilkka Halso uses constructed digital images to face the question of preservation in nature. Imagining the storing of nature in giant warehouses, he expresses our ambivalent relationship to the survival of our planet.

The present, the past and the future seem to fuse in the photographs of the Leak series by Rosemary Laing. She uses a wooden structure as the symbol of a building and introduces it upside down into her analogue photographs, creating a dialogue between nature and culture and their relationship to the past and the present.

Under the name of diStruktura, Milica Millcevic and Milan Bosnic present a body of work titled Face to Face, evocative of the romantic representation of nature in a socio-ecological context, trying to construct “an enlarged vision of nature”.

Nature is also an ideal space to immerse in an introspective experience. As an homage to Henry David Thoreau,

Luxembourg artist Robert Hornung, created Walden, a series of photographs of the woods stressing the paradoxical affirmation of banal beauty by fusing two images into a large scale diptych.

There are formal correspondences to Hornung’s series in the work of Gerco de Ruijter, although his concept differs. With his work Baumschule, the Dutch photographer leaves behind spatial conventions and horizontal representations to show views that are related to the “all-over”, uniform treatment of the canvas in abstract painting.

Space and time are also confusing elements in the new work of Silvio Galassi, poetic, palimpsest-like photographs created from old negatives of anonymous landscape photographs.

The young German artist Anna Vogel also works with photographic archives. She finds her images mostly on the Internet, and her intervention consists in subtracting significant elements of the image, thus giving it a different meaning.

Justine Blau, another artist from Luxembourg, expresses a utopian vision of a contemporary Arcadia by assembling different images of “tourist” landscapes, downloaded from the Internet and united in photographs or installations. Her work is not only a challenge of our relationship to nature, but also a critique of the clichés of the representation of nature.

In the same line of thought, Thomas Wrede stresses the strangeness of places by inventing new hybrid spaces in his photographs. Playing with scale and angle of view, he creates a mysterious esthetic aura, which helps him to point out the incompatibility of space and time.

The dichotomy between the organic and the constructed environment is also resonating in the work of Andrej Osterman who digitally introduces miniature elements in real urban landscapes.

The relationship between culture and nature takes on surreal dimensions in the work of the Slovenian artist Jasmina

Cibic. She conjures huge animals that are out of synch with the landscape.

In contrast with this formalist or playful aesthetic, Pétur Thom sen, with Imported Landscape, questions the ethics of the Islandic energy policy by revealing the destruction of nature in a straightforward way.

The ethical and aesthetic dimensions of the landscape are also interrogated in Anamnésie Land by the French Virginie Mail lard. She presents spaces with a reference to history but that don’t exist in reality. In her work, neon signs are activating the memory of the space, adding a layer of estrangement.

Strangeness and artificiality are recurring themes also in the work of Gabor Arion Kudasz. In Green Area, he explores the theatrical dimension of public or private places lit like stages.

The presence of homeless people in his mysterious non-spaces stress the alienation of urban spaces and parks.

Doubting the reality of what the lens is showing us, photography itself contributes to the disappearance of nature: an image of nature is all that is left and finally replaces nature in a more efficient and accurate way. In a society where images rule, where every gesture, every event, social or private, is captivated, photographed, and made public, we may wonder if the image itself has become our only reality.

Considering the quantity of images we consume daily on our screens, those visions appear more and more artificial and fictitious. Have we definitely lost our link to nature?

Comment les artistes voient-ils les évolutions actuelles de la photographie ? En explorant des questions telles que l’accélération du temps par rapport à l’espace et l’impact de ces mutations sur nos représentations du monde. La corrélation des coordonnées de temps et d’espace – l’homme postmoderne vivant dans les milieux de vie accélérée et numérisée – joue un rôle dans la production artistique de l’image qui évoque de plus en plus la complexité de ces nouvelles réalités. Visions et fictions semblent dépassées par la réalité.

Certaines représentations n’ont lieu que sur le plan virtuel, mais les cyberespace(s) dans lesquels la vie humaine apparaît comme une simple simulation, font désormais partie de la réalité. Dans de nombreux cas de l’imagerie numérique, la fiction peut difficilement être distinguée de la réalité. Le temps semble s’arrêter, le présent et le futur ne deviennent qu’un.

En s’appuyant sur les notions de paysage, le travail photographique et vidéographique de Robert F. Hammerstiel déconstruit à travers sa série Waste Land, des images générées par ordinateur, les représentations paysagères des jeux électroniques.

Dans la série Vice City de Thibault Brunet, le thème des réalités virtuelles se développe à travers les avatars inspirés par la culture populaire dominante américaine. Le paysage urbain photographié dans le jeu vidéo, donc transféré dans un monde virtuel, est ontologiquement une séance de photo réelle.

Alors que Brunet déconstruit les éléments futuristes de son paysage urbain virtuel pour leur donner une nouvelle réalité, Cédric Delsaux, dans Dark Lens, explore la dimension science-fictionnelle de la réalité de la mégapole d’aujourd’hui.

Pour exprimer le sentiment mélangé d’anxiété et d’étrangeté de cet environnement, il introduit un certain nombre de

personnages des films Star Wars, ce qui confère à ses photographies, comme il l’écrit « une dimension naïve et métaphysique ».

L’esthétique post-moderne de Delsaux repose sur la distanciation et l’humour dans son approche de la représentation.

En isolant les éléments signalétiques de l’espace urbain, le collectif suisse collectif_fact crée avec sa vidéo Datatown une nouvelle vision des lieux. L’espace noir qui reste après l’effacement des bâtiments et des rues en relation avec les signes semble appartenir à un monde virtuel, illimité.

L’illusion la plus pure est à la base du travail de Paul Horn et Lotte Lyon. Leur série Neufundland trompe le spectateur avec des images qui semblent des paysages. Toutefois, ces lieux sont en fait des illusions construites à partir de modèles, parfois avec l’aide d’objets trouvés. Dans certaines images, la nature construite des scènes est immédiatement apparente, mais dans d’autres, il faut procéder à une inspection très poussée afin de découvrir l’illusion.

Le thème du faux est aussi récurrent dans le travail de Reiner Riedler. Dans Fake Holidays, il reproduit le côté artificiel des parcs d’attraction touristiques, dont un grand nombre ont été construits pour représenter la nature « sauvage » de façon ludique. Ces paysages faussement idylliques ont été organisés pour être consommés.

La dépendance croissante du virtuel dans la vie quotidienne influence les pratiques artistiques qui traitent de réalités mixtes. Le monde fictif y est présenté comme impossible à distinguer de la réalité, et le réel proche d’un monde surréel.

Ici la frontière entre le réel et le virtuel s’ouvre complétement de sorte à ce que la photographie devienne aussi une façon d’enregistrer le « réel » de la fiction.

How do artists see the current trends in photography? Issues of the acceleration of time in relation to space and the impact of these mutations on our representations of the world are a core question in contemporary photography as technology and virtual reality are rapidly changing the way we look at the world. The correlation of the coordinates of time and space play an important part in the artistic production of images which evoke more and more often the complexity of these new realities. Visions and fictions seem outgrown by reality. Virtual lives and cyberspaces, today, are part of the everyday. Time seems to stand still; the present and the future are fusing.

The exhibition Fake and virtual worlds presents work by artists Robert F. Hammerstiel, Thibault Brunet, Cédric Delsaux, Paul Horn & Lotte Lyon and Reiner Riedler who tackle the question of these complex new realities, each in their own way. Robert F. in his series Waste Land. Thibaut Brunet in Vice City delves into the world of virtual realities and the cityscapes from video games, while Cédric Delsaux with Dark Lens explores science fiction within today’s mega cities.

The theme in Paul Horn and Lotte Lyon’s work Neufundland is illusion itself, as they construct their naturalistic looking images of landscapes from models and found objects. Deception is also at the heart of Reiner Riedler’s Fake Holidays investigating the artificiality of consumer oriented amusement parks.

The increasing presence of the virtual in our everyday lives has an important influence on contemporary artistic creation. Here, the fictional world is shown as almost indistinguishable from reality. The borders between the real and the virtual are breached open and photography becomes a way to record the reality of fiction.

Une autre partie de DistURBANces intitulée DistURBANces – Urban Utopia & Dystopia met en évidence le rapport « temps/ espace » dans l’évolution du monde actuel et de ses représentations urbaines. Comment aujourd’hui la photographie artistique représente-t-elle l’accélération du temps par rapport à l’espace ? Quel est l’impact des changements sur les populations et leur habitat réel ? Comment sont les changements reflétés dans les rapports humains à la nature et la ville ? Quelles utopies ou dystopies les artistes génèrentils dans leurs photographies et leurs vidéos ? Le choix des artistes et des œuvres pour cette section est délibérément orienté vers l’essence du lieu même qui est la Fondation de l’Architecture et de l’Ingénierie.

Les questions des représentations de l’espace public, de l’urbanisation démesurée, de la relation de l’homme et de la ville, comme de la place de la nature dans le développement des méga-cités sont posées de façons très différentes et dans des styles très distincts par ces artistes internationaux choisis par les curateurs du Mois Européen de la Photographie.

Dans la série Paradise Now, le photographe allemand Pe ter Bialobrzeski montre l’artificialité de la nature dans la méga-cité en créant des images réelles qui tournent au surréel.

En renforçant les points de vue sur la nature en opposition aux fragments urbains qui forment souvent les extrémités de l’image, Bialobrzeski crée une série de photographies impressionnantes où l’éclairage théâtral à la périphérie de l’infrastructure

artificiellement éclairée des grandes villes d’Asie contribue à la décontextualisation de l’image de la ville.

Fortement intéressé par les grandes villes indiennes, Fré dé ric Delangle, photographe français, fixe sa caméra sur l’urbanité même de la quatrième plus grande ville de l’Inde. Ses photos de la série intitulée Ahmedabad – Aucune vie la nuit dernière, de 2006, réalisées avec entre cinq à dix minutes de pose photographique, mettent à nu ce qu’il appelle le « squelette » d’Ahmedabad. « Pour la première fois, je rentrais dans une ville en ayant l’impression de rentrer dans un décor. Atmosphère curieuse où la modernité n’a pas encore complètement effacé le passé mais le côtoie. Je circulais dans ce labyrinthe comme dans un livre d’histoire, un voyage dans le temps où les époques se superposent et s’enchevêtrent. C’est la nuit que je remontais au plus loin, quand le chaos de la modernité s’arrêtait, je pouvais explorer les entrailles et le squelette de cette cité désertée. » (F.D.) Ce jeu photographique d’absence/présence met en valeur les contrastes auxquels le photographe est confronté et qu’il essaie de rayer du réel : chaleur, chaos, pollution et foule se transforment en structures presque abstraites. Il capture ainsi un véritable moment de contemplation, de calme, de sérénité et d’abstraction, avant que le chaos de la vie moderne ne recommence quelques heures plus tard.

L’artiste espagnol Dionisio González s’intéresse aussi aux mégapoles. En s’inspirant des photographies documentaires qu’il a prises dans les favelas de Rio de Janeiro, de São Paulo ou de Busan, il invente de nouveaux mondes. Au lieu des

représentations souvent dramatiques de ces milieux défavorisés comme les favelas, où habitent des millions de personnes en promiscuité, il présente des stratégies alternatives de survie. Par le biais de retouche d’image numérique à l’aide de Photoshop, il superpose l’image de l’architecture de zones urbaines existantes à des structures de conceptions architecturales modernes du XXIème siècle. Ainsi, il documente ses visions utopiques d’une nouvelle connivence entre tradition et modernité, pauvreté et richesse. En tant que spectateurs, nous sommes confrontés à la réalité avec des images pénétrées par la fiction artistique. Si, toutefois, ces fictions possèdent de « bonnes intentions », où vontelles nous mener ?

Nous trouvons une autre façon de parler de fictions et de modélisation dans le travail de l’Autrichien Daniel Lei den frost. En utilisant sa mémoire des lieux et des situations qui semblent en quelque sorte étrangement familiers aux spectateurs, il imagine un dispositif d’exposition qui comprend des dessins, des photos et une installation d’une maquette dans un espace cubique. Dans un premier temps, il enregistre ses souvenirs en les dessinant. Il procède ensuite à prendre des photos de ces modèles qu’il a construits avec des matériaux existants simples. Le caractère un peu improvisé du modèle n’apparaît pas dans les photos qui se distinguent toutes par une grande qualité artistique trompant le spectateur qui semble perdre ses repères dans ces visions floutées d’une urbanité inventée.

Dans un esprit plus poético-conceptuel et en introduisant des mots écrits en néon, subtilement intégré dans le motif de la photo, la photographe française Virginie Maillard crée des associations entre la désignation et la présentation des lieux. Dans cet espace métaphorique, le spectateur doit choisir entre les éléments, ou pour le dire avec Foucault : entre la chose ou le mot. Une tension se crée avec

l’interférence de la temporalité et de la spatialité du récit.

La dichotomie entre le lieu et le langage est déconcertante.

Tant dans sa forme écrite que visuelle, le mot devient un espace anachronique où le flux d’images documentaires peut être réfléchi et interrogé.

Le récit fictionnel sur fond d’urbanité prend différentes formes plastiques dans les photographies et les vidéos de l’artiste allemand Niklas Goldbach. Alors que ses séries photos comme Untitled (Building Series, 2008) pointent les éléments dystopiques de l’expérience urbaine postmoderne, ses vidéos comme High-Rise, en s’inspirant du roman de science-fiction du même nom de J.G. Ballard, dénoncent l’enfermement de notre système globalisé. Entre réalité et fiction ses œuvres illustrent l’idée de Michel Foucault des espaces à redéfinir. À partir de photos réelles prises dans des lieux existants comme des sites touristiques espagnols (ici Benidorm), il recompose des édifices inaccessibles, sorte de Babel d’aujourd’hui.

Les différentes positions artistiques réunies dans cette exposition témoignent d’un grand engagement des photographes par rapport aux mutations de l’espace urbain et de ses représentations. En portant leur regard critique sur la ville, plus sur le bâti que le vivant, ces artistes questionnent aussi le rôle de l’individu dans un monde de plus en plus impersonnel, qu’il soit standardisé ou extrémisé.

DistURBANces - Urban Utopia and Dystopia stresses the relation of time and space in the evolution of the contemporary world and its urban representations. How does art photography today represent the acceleration of time related to space? What is the impact of these changes on populations and their habitat? How are these changes reflected in human relationships to nature and to the city? What utopias or what dystopias are generated by artists in their photographs or videos? The choice of artists and works for this section of DistURBANces is deliberately focused on the space of the Fondation de l’Architecture et de l’Ingénierie.

The artists in this exhibition all present a different approach: Peter Bialobrzeski stresses the artificiality of nature in mega-cities with his series Paradise Now, creating impressive images with an almost surreal flavor; Fréderic Delangle focuses on the Indian city of Ahmedabad, taking pictures at night with long exposures. The series has the title No life at all last night in Ahmedabad. The city is indeed emptied of all signs of life, and appears almost as a stage set, revealing through this photographic process its basic structure.

Spanish artist Dionisio González suggest strategies of survival by photographing the slums of Rio, Sao Paulo, Busan. Rather than stressing poverty and dejection, he creates a mix of real life structures and modern architecture proposals through Photoshop manipulation suggesting a utopian but social project.

Austrian artist Daniel Leidenfrost uses still a different way to talk about fictions and model worlds. Based on his own memory of places and situations, he imagines an exhibition display comprising drawings, photographs and an installation of a model in a cubic space. He then makes photographs of the model, thus deceiving the viewer with a blurred vision of a constructed urban landscape.

Virginie Maillard integrates neon words into her photographs, creating a metaphorical space with associations between the denomination and the representation of the place, while Nik las Goldbach recreates a kind of modern Babel, an inaccessible labyrinth, by recomposing and restructuring existing buildings, – in this case tourist housings from Benidorm (Spain). His pictures sit between science-fiction and reality and suggest the failure of globalization.

The various artistic statements united in this exhibition testify of an important commitment of the photographers in relation to the mutations of the urban space and its representations. With their reflexions about the city and its constructions more than its ways of living, these artists also question the role of the individual in a world, be it standardised or taken to the extreme, that is becoming more and more impersonal.

L’EXPOSITION LA COLLECTION LE PRIX

Depuis 2003, Arendt & Medernach soutient la photographie contemporaine à travers une politique culturelle active qui se traduit essentiellement par les activités suivantes: le sponsoring du MUDAM et de l’Edward Steichen Foundation, l’exposition régulière dans leurs lieux, la constitution progressive d’une collection et depuis cette année le Prix European Month of Photography Arendt Award.

Des recherches quantitatives et qualitatives conduites entre autres par l’International Art Consultants, en partenariat avec le British Council of Offices, montrent que l’art, dans l’entreprise et pour l’entreprise, joue un rôle important qui va au-delà de son image véhiculée qu’on lui attribue depuis toujours. Les études prouvent même que l’art permet d’améliorer l’environnement aussi bien pour le personnel que pour les clients en apportant plus de flexibilité, de créativité voire même de productivité au sein de l’entreprise. C’est cette dimension systémique de l’art que l’étude Arendt & Medernach a voulu développer depuis la toute première manifestation.

Ainsi, l’activité de l’exposition chez Arendt & Medernach est née du concept de faire vivre d’abord des œuvres photographiques dans le contexte de l’environnement quotidien de l’étude, avant même de constituer une collection.

Cela s’est réalisé en préconisant une grande diversité d’expressions et de thèmes et en privilégiant une pluralité d’approches photographiques. L’idée, dès le début a été de s’engager de façon durable dans la promotion d’artistes émergents aussi bien que de contribuer à la reconnaissance, dans le cadre de l’entreprise, d’artistes déjà reconnus par le monde de l’art.

Depuis, chaque exposition, en proposant une ou plusieurs positions artistiques cohérentes et significatives dans le 36

contexte actuel de la photographie contemporaine, suscite un intérêt certain qui mène parfois jusqu’au débat à l’intérieur de l’étude. Afin de montrer qu’il ne s’agit pas de décorer les murs intérieurs de l’édifice, mais de faire révéler des propositions artistiques intéressantes, l’exposition est toujours accompagnée par un programme de médiation qui va de l’interview public avec l’artiste lors du vernissage, jusqu’à la visite commentée pour les collaborateurs de l’étude. Avec le temps, la photographie contemporaine est devenue ainsi un véritable projet de communication tant vers l’intérieur que vers l’extérieur de l’étude.

Suite aux expositions dans ses lieux, Arendt & Meder nach s’est constituée peu à peu une collection d’œuvres retenues pour leur qualité intrinsèque, mais aussi pour leur capacité de pouvoir capter l’intérêt esthétique des employés et ainsi créer de nouveaux liens contribuant à donner une âme à l’entreprise.

Ainsi se côtoient des œuvres très particulières comme les photographies de Beat Streuli ou de Katharina Sie ver ding. Tout en posant à leur manière la question de l’identité et de l’altérité, l’un semble isoler l’individu de la masse, le privé du public, l’instant du mouvement, alors que l’autre focalise sur son propre visage en procédant par l’extrême agrandissement, par les coupures et par les superpositions.

Dans d’autres photographies de la collection, on retrouve aussi les thèmes de l’identité et de l’intimité dans une sorte de réinterprétation du portrait comme c’est le cas pour les Babylone Babies de Marie-Jo Lafontaine.

La réadaptation de thèmes issus de la peinture classique atteint son paroxysme dans The Rape of Africa de David

LaChapelle, maître de la mise en scène photographique et de la provocation post-pop. Récemment entrée dans la collection cette photographie a déjà été à l’origine de vifs débats. À côté des portraits et des mises en scènes, nous trouvons des positions originales du paysage urbain comme le questionnement sur la nature dans le contexte urbain de Laurent Gueneau ou les visions utopiques et dystopiques de Beate Gütschow, sans oublier les recherches plus formalistes de Günther Förg. Toutes les œuvres de la collection, exposées principalement dans les parties publiques des deux édifices de l’étude, créent une relation entre la photographie et le spectateur qui contribue à valoriser l’esprit de l’entreprise et fédérer la pensée sur l’homme et son environnement dans le respect de la liberté d’expression.

collaboration de Café-Crème, participe comme partenaire actif en offrant ses cimaises aux photographes sélectionnés selon la thématique générale de la manifestation. Il était donc tout à fait logique que l’étude continue à soutenir cette manifestation en y ajoutant une autre activité en 2013, c’est-à-dire la création du Prix European Month of Photography Arendt Award, en collaboration avec les sept membres du Mois Européen de la Photographie (Paris, Berlin, Vienne, Bratislava, Ljubljana, Budapest et Luxembourg).

Le Prix est remis pour la première fois au Luxembourg à l’artiste espagnol Dionisio González, un des 26 artistes du concept d’exposition intitulé DistURBANces, défi lancé à la notion traditionnelle de « réalité » dans un monde en mutation permanente.

Le jury, composé de Gunda Achleitner, curatrice, Affaires culturelles City of Vienna, Paul di Felice, curateur, coordinateur EMOP, Luxembourg, Katia Reich, curatrice EMOP Ber lin, Oliva Maria Rubio, directrice La Fabrica, Madrid, Jean-Luc Soret, curateur Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris, a sélectionné Dionisio González pour son engagement et sa démarche innovatrice ainsi que pour la dimension socio-politique de son œuvre.

En ouvrant le dialogue sur les interrelations entre

photographie, art, architecture et pensées environnementales, l’artiste espagnol se distingue par l’accomplissement de cette thématique sur le questionnement de l’urbanisation et de l’urbanité à travers une approche plastique cohérente et pertinente. Il invente de nouvelles structures urbaines inspirées de lieux existants comme les favelas à Rio et São Paulo ou la périphérie de Busan.

En s’opposant au principe de la tabula rasa, il présente des espaces hétérotopiques qui nous offrent différents niveaux de lectures permettant d’imaginer de nouvelles situations architecturales et urbaines. Dans le cadre du Prix, Dionisio González expose un échantillon de ses dernières séries de photographies avant que l’une ou l’autre œuvre soit intégrée dans la collection.

Depuis les dix dernières années, à travers ses différentes activités autour de la photographie contemporaine, inscrites dans la durée et liées entre elles, Arendt & Me der nach a réussi à créer un environnement esthétique et artistique qui confronte le monde des affaires autour d’interrogations partagées et qui contribue à promouvoir l’ouverture d’esprit, la diversité de la pensée et le partage d’émotions.

The exhibition, the collection, the Prize Since 2003, Arendt & Medernach has encouraged contemporary photography via an active cultural policy primarily focused on the following key activities: regular exhibitions in their premises, gradual building up of a collection, patronage of the MU DAM, support to the Edward Steichen Foundation and, from this year onwards, the Prize European Month of Photography Arendt Award.

Quantitative and qualitative researches conducted by, among others, International Art Consultants, in collaboration with the British Council of Offices, demonstrate that art in business and for business improves the working environment both for staff and clients by fostering greater flexibility, creativity and even productivity. It’s this systemic dimension of art that the law firm Arendt & Medernach aimed to develop since the very first event.

Along the exhibitions held in its premises, Arendt & Medernach has been gradually building up a collection of artworks encouraging a wide range of subjects and expressions as well as favouring a variety of photographic approaches. From the beginning, the idea was to commit over the long term to promoting up-and-coming artists as well as raising the profile of proven artists within the firm.

Since the first European Month of Photography in Luxembourg, Arendt & Medernach, working in partnership with Café-Crème,

was closely involved by offering its picture rails to selected photographers depending on the general theme of the event. As such, it was entirely logical for the law firm to continue supporting the event by adding a further activity in 2013, the Prize European Month of Photography Arendt Award. The prize, presented for the first time in Luxembourg, has been attributed to the Spanish artist Dionisio González, one of the 26 artists of the exhibition concept entitled DistURBANces, a challenge to the conventional notion of ‘reality’ in a world of constant change. The jury selected Dionisio González for his commitment and innovative approach, as well as the sociopolitical dimension of his work.

Over the past ten years, Arendt & Medernach succeeded, through its various long-term and interconnected activities related to contemporary photography, in creating an aesthetic and artistic environment which confronts the business world on a number of shared questions, contributing to open-mindedness, diversity of thought and emotions sharing.

L’exposition affirme l’existence d’une méta-réalité, d’une relation entre la photographie et d’autres modes d’expression artistiques dans leur manière d’appréhender la culture d’un moment et les événements d’une époque donnée. Le choix des œuvres a été fait en fonction de leur capacité d’exprimer un état mental qui repose sur la mémoire du passé, lequel s’inscrit dans le présent réel.

Les œuvres ont un point commun : d’abord, tous le artistes ont étudié la photographie à la Fondazione Ma rangoni de Florence. Et bien que leur champ d’activité soit varié, leur travail se définit par le souci d’explorer des liens entre différentes thématiques artistiques qui se situent au-delà des arts visuels.

Battlefields 1848-1867 de Giorgio Barrera est un ensemble qui focalise sur les lieux les plus mémorables du Ri sor gi mento, le mouvement social et politique qui a mené à la constitution de l’Italie en 1861. Avec l’aide de cartes historiques et des témoignages écrits, Barrera a été en mesure de localiser précisément les principaux champs de bataille, notamment dans les campagnes en faisant l’impasse sur les sites urbains et leurs affrontements. Dans ces photographies, Barrera a fait le choix de ne pas inclure les personnes ou sites qui renvoyaient de façon expresse aux événements qui se sont déroulés ici.

Le paysage se définit comme site naturel, et figure comme lien entre passé et présent. La photographie de Barrera puise sa force dans les emprunts qu’il fait à la peinture de la Renaissance ainsi que dans sa capacité de traduire les 42

horreurs de la guerre. Sa photographie évoque le territoire et sa mémoire historique bien que celle-ci reste invisible.

Laura Garcia Serventi se sert de la photographie pour analyser sa fascination pour l’ambiguïté et la théâtralité de la photographie. Sa recherche se situe dans la zone sensible entre vérité et simulation, nature et artifice, réalité et fiction. Elle combine le nu de l’histoire de l’art avec de faux paysages – en fait des détails de dioramas que l’on peut trouver dans les musées d’Histoire naturelle – afin de mettre en évidence, mais aussi de cacher, la frontière entre le vrai et le faux. Le vrai et l’artificiel s’épousent ; rien de ce qui paraît n’est vraiment vrai. Afin de souligner encore plus le concept de la manipulation, Garcia Serventi a fait appel à des modèles qui se sont soumis à la chirurgie esthétique dans le passé, de sorte que tout est falsifié, même le corps.

Liliana Grueff a choisi de traiter d’une pratique courante au XIVème siècle et qui consistait à confier un enfant à un orphelinat quand les parents n’étaient pas en mesure de s’occuper de lui : ils le remettaient à une institution charitable. C’est avec beaucoup de sensibilité que la série Ex posed raconte l’histoire de la séparation, voulue ou non, de la mère et de l’enfant. La photographe se concentre sur les petits objets que les mères remettaient avec l’enfant et qui permettaient de l’indentifier plus tard si jamais l’enfant devait retrouver sa mère. Une moitié d’un objet (lettre, croix, médaille ou sceau) figurait

l’expression du désespoir mais aussi de l’espoir et de dévotion. Grueff photographie des objets conservés dans les Archives historiques de la Pietà à Venise en créant ainsi une narration intime faite de micro-histoires.

Marta Primavera travaille avec des images existantes, des reproductions d’éléments de fresques et de gouache pour établir des liens entre passé et présent à travers l’autoportrait. C’est ainsi qu’elle fait figurer ses propres autoportraits dans les fresques de la galerie municipale de la Città di Castello dans une série appelée Greetings and Kisses. Cette présence est légère, sur le mode ludique et tire son inspiration des clichés habituels propres aux photos des vacances d’été en Italie. En même temps, c’est une prise de position par rapport à l’impact puissant que l’histoire de l’art peut avoir sur le travail de le jeune génération d’artistes. Le deuxième volet de ce travail appelé Réaménagements à l’Est inclut des photographies prises lors des Jeux Olympiques de Londres en 2012 et documente les modifications apportées à la structure urbaine des quartiers Est de Londres. De nouveau, l’objectif consiste à analyser les connections qui existent 44

entre présent et passé. Au cours de son processus, elle a d’abord essayé de trouver des reproductions anciennes des sites qu’elle voulait visiter, ensuite elle prit des photos où elle figurait également dans une pose qui imitait un personnage connu de notre époque. La combinaison de tous ces éléments lui permet de s’interroger sur la qualité de vie, les améliorations et transformations.

Ciro Frank Schiappa, dans New York City Serenade, rend hommage à la ville à travers l’histoire du rock. Il s’exprime ainsi : « Le travail établit une sorte de cheminement entre des lieux qui témoignent du passé alors que l’avenir s’écrit ailleurs ». Il crée des histoires qui déplacent le spectateur comme dans une machine à remonter le temps. Il n’y a pas à vrai dire de nostalgie du passé. Il s’agit plutôt d’une sensation d’infinie fluctuation ; comment les paysage urbain, la musique, les textes forment un aggloméré qui façonne notre mémoire.

The concept of the exhibition revolves around the idea of meta reality and how the relationship between photography and other artistic forms respond to the culture and events of particular time periods. The selection of works attempts to trace the ability of memory –as state of mind– to recall past events that have become a realistic presence. Memory entwined with past and present.

The photographers selected have a common ground: they all studied at the school of photography Fondazione Studio Ma rangoni in Florence, Italy. They are all artists who work in different fields but have developed body of works that explore the relationship of artistic forms beyond the limits of visual arts.

Giorgio Barrera’s Battlefields 1848-1867 is a body of work dedicated to the most famous landmarks of the Risorgimento, the political and social movement that led to the unification of Italy in 1861. With the help of historical maps and written testimonies, Barrera was able to track the places where the main battles occurred, focussing on rural areas, and avoiding conflicts that happened in urban sites. In his photographs, Barrera chose not to include people or monuments referring to the facts that happened in those locations: the landscape here acts as an observation of the natural world, as well as an expression of interaction between past and present. The visual strength of Barrera’s photographs lies in the inspiration he borrowed from Renaissance paintings, as well as the ability to narrate the horrors of every war. His photographs evoke

historical memories that permeate the territory although hidden to everyday life.

Laura Garcia Serventi uses photography to analyse her fascination with the ambiguity and the theatricality of the photographic medium. Her research vibrates between truth and simulation, nature and deceit, reality and fiction. In the series The other landscape, Garcia Serventi creates alternate layers of representation and reality. She combines nudes inspired by famous works of art with made-up landscapes –small details of large dioramas found in Natural History museums– to intensify, as well as conceal, boundaries between true and false.

The natural and the artificial indistinctly blend. Nothing is what it looks like. To strengthen the concept of manipulation, Garcia Serventi uses models who have undergone some sort of aesthetic surgery in the past: everything is falsified, even the body.

Liliana Grueff approaches the theme of infant exposure, a common practice which dates back to the XIVth century, when people could not take care of a child and left him/her in charity institutions dedicated to the welfare of abandoned offspring.

With a delicate touch, Exposed tells stories of separation, either voluntary or not, between a mother and a child. The photographs focus on small personal objects that mothers used to leave with the child as a signal of recognition, in the hope of a future, possible reunification. One half of a personal object, be it a letter, a cross, a medal, or a seal, was a testimony of desperation but also of hope and devotion. Grueff photographed 47

items kept in the Archivi Storici della Pietà (Historical Archives of Mercy) in Venice, and created a body of work that narrates intimate but universal micro-stories.

Marta Primavera uses existing images, reproductions of frescoes as well as watercolours, to recount and sketch out ties between past and present through the use of self portraits. Greetings and Kisses includes frescoes from the Città di Castello’s City Gallery where Primavera inserted her self-portraits. Her presence is light and humorous, inspired by the stereotype of Italian Summer vacations. At the same time the work addresses the topic of how a powerful art history can inspire the work of the younger generation of artists. The second body of work, East Refurbishment, includes photographs from the project inspired by the Olympics of 2012, and how refurbishment has influenced the changes in the urban structure of East London.

Again, the main goal is to analyse the connection between old and new. As part of the creativity process, Primavera first looked for old watercolours that depicted the Olympic areas in the past. Then, she visited the sites reproduced in the watercolours, and took pictures of the areas, as well as self-portraits while interpreting a typical character of today. By combining these elements, she created pictures that question about quality of life, improvement and transformation.

In New York City Serenade, Ciro Frank Schiappa pays his homage to the city of New York through the history of rock music. In his own words, “the project creates a path among places that hold memory of the past, while the future is being written somewhere else”. He shares stories that continuously displace the viewer in a sort of time machine: there is not an actual yearning for the past, it is more an evocative sense of infinite fluctuation. How urban landscape, music, lyrics can melt together and shape our memories.

Images are genuinely social, not only because they are created in a given social context, but also because this very context could not be constituted without the production of images. Production, image/media, and perception are therefore closely intertwined. Maja Weyermann addresses this complexity in computer-generated “Interiors” revolving around the social construction of spaces through categories of perception.

In The Miller House – and a Slice of Cake – or – Life Shortly Before Disaster..., the artist returns to questions addressed in earlier works such as Absence or FWH2 (Farnsworth 52

House), thus pursuing her long-standing interest in spaces of cultural memory. The starting point for this new series of works is the Miller House, a modernist residency designed by Eero Saarinen for the industrialist and patron of architecture J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia. Built in 1957, the house is located in Columbus, Indiana.

Saarinen’s design for the Miller House references Mies van der Rohe’s steel and glass architecture, more specifically Farnsworth House, which the German architect built near Chicago in 1951. The Miller House combines the key features of

international modernist aesthetics such as the open plan, the flat roof and the large stone and glass walls.

Weyermann confronts computer simulations of the Miller House with scenes from Federico Fellini’s Dolce Vita and Mi chelangelo Antonionis L’Avventura, both released in 1960, shortly after the completion of the Miller House. Both films experiment with new narrative techniques by blending surreal elements with “reality” to portray a stagnating society in a state of collapse or transition from various points of view.

In Weyermann’s newly designed virtual model, the filmic space and the architectural space are closely intertwined, merging as multiple layers and opening up new perspectives. They thus create the impression of a dream-like, fractal room with multiple points of view, in which the past conflates with future presents or the present future.

Beat Streuli Dans le cadre du Mois Européen de la Photographie, Nosbaum & Reding a le plaisir de présenter pour la première fois dans ses lieux une exposition personnelle de l’artiste suisse Beat Streuli (* 1957). L’artiste montre un choix de photographies axé sur sa nouvelle série New Street (2012/2013), qui porte sur les rues de Birmingham et Castellón. New Street est aussi le titre de l’importante exposition personnelle que Beat Streuli a présentée à Ikon Gallery à Bir mingham et qui est montrée actuellement au EACC (Espai d’art contemporani de Castelló) à Castellón en Espagne (jusqu’au 28 avril 2013). Elle est accompagnée d’un livre d’artiste de presque 700 pages, avec des textes de Sadie Plant et José Luis Perez. « Les images de Birmingham réalisées par Beat Streuli s’intéressent à une ville souvent négligée et sous-estimée – un endroit qui, à certains égards, pourrait se trouver n’importe où, un espace urbain abstrait dont les éléments et les habitants viennent du monde entier pour en faire une sorte d’espace universel. Un endroit qu’il faut regarder de biais ou de manière très attentive – éventuellement de trop près ou à partir d’un certain angle, en plissant les yeux, ou alors de très loin – si l’on veut découvrir sa spécificité. C’est précisément ce que fait Beat Streuli avec son appareil photographique, en s’attachant aux rebords, aux coins, aux fragments, aux bouts, aux détails des rues et des gens de la ville, à ses visages et à ses façades, à son trafic et à ses foules.

Dix ans plus tôt, Beat Streuli avait déjà photographié la ville : ses grands, audacieux portraits d’adolescents de la ville étaient exposés dans l’espace public et au musée. Ces portraits étaient délibérés et dignes, directs et individualisés. Aujourd’hui, comme pour suggérer une équivalence entre les habitants et tous les autres éléments de la ville, les bouts de visage et de corps sont présentés de manière identique aux bouts de murs et de portes, aux signes et logos, aux ombres et crevasses de ces espaces urbains que traverse la population. On voit tout ce qu’il y a à voir et tout ce qu’on peut rater.

Le bon sens nous dit qu’ils pourraient être n’importe où, ces bouts, coins, parties de bâtiments, de voitures, de barrières et de signes, mais les images finissent par nous convaincre qu’elles sont particulières à cet endroit. Les gens, aussi, pourraient être n’importe qui et n’importe où, les souvenirs et les familles provenir du monde entier. Et pourtant, à l’instar des caractéristiques de ses bâtiments et de ses rues, les habitants de la ville sont bien les siens, étrangement reconnaissables dans les images de Streuli comme appartenant à leur temps et à leur espace, identifiables grâce au moindre détail, au plus subtile des indices : la manière dont ils portent leur sac, utilisent leur téléphone et portent leur écharpe, leur contenance ou leur posture, leur démarche, la manière dont ils tournent les yeux vers le soleil estival.

In the framework of the European Month of Photography in Luxembourg, Nosbaum & Reding has the pleasure to host for the first time at its premises a solo exhibition of Swiss artist Beat Streuli (* 1957). The artist presents a selection of photos focused on his new series New Street (2012/2013), taken in the cities of Birmingham and Castellón. New Street is also the title of a comprehensive solo exhibition of Beat Streuli which started at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, and is now on view at EACC (Espai d’art contemporani de Castelló) in Castellón, Spain (until April 28). The exhibition is accompanied by an artist’s book of nearly 700 pages, with texts by Sadie Plant and José Luis Perez.

“Beat Streuli’s images of Birmingham pay close attention to a city which is often overlooked and underplayed. It is a place which in some senses could be anywhere: an abstract urban space whose elements and people come from all around the world to give it the flavour of a universal space. One has to look askance or very carefully - perhaps from too close up, or at an angle, with a squint, or from far away - to see its specificity.

And this is what Streuli does with his camera, focussing on edges, corners, snippets, snatches, close-ups of the city’s streets and people, its faces and facades, its traffic and its crowds.

Streuli was here with his camera once before: ten years ago his large, bold, portraits of the city’s teenagers were displayed on the street as well as in a gallery. Those portraits were deliberate and poised, direct and individualised. Now, with what feels like a new sense of equivalence between the people and the city’s other elements, aspects of faces and part of bodies are presented on a par with bits and pieces of the walls and doors, the signs and logos, the shadows and the cracks of the urban space through which the population moves. One sees how much there is to see, and how much one can miss.

Common sense insists they could be anywhere, these snippets, corners, snatches of buildings, vehicles, barriers, and signs but somehow the images convince us that they are special to this place. The people could be anyone and anywhere as well, memories and families from all around the world. And yet, like the features of its buildings and its streets, the people of the city are very much its own, strangely recognisable in Streuli’s images as belonging to their time and space, identifiable from the slightest details, the most subtle of hints: the way they sport their bags and use their phones and wear their scarves; their manner of carrying or holding themselves, their gaits, the way they screw their eyes against the summer sun.

These are not portraits of individuals or, indeed, a place, but ways of picturing the city as a tangle of interacting details in which elements of people’s lives coincide with fragments of their landscape to produce the specificity that gives a place its life.”

ÉRIC CHENAL WHITE INSIDE #1 projet reprend par ailleurs des thèmes qui sont chers à l’auteur, à savoir l’intermédiation, la transfiguration et la rencontre avec la lumière.

La démarche commencée dans la Grande Région (Casi no Luxembourg, Mudam, Centre Pompidou Metz, Frac Lor r aine, Synagogue de Delme, Centre Dominique Lang) a pour objectif de s’étendre à d’autres « chambres esthétiques » en Europe.

White Inside est un projet photographique d’Éric Chenal qui donne à voir des lieux dédiés à l’art contemporain entre deux temps d’exposition.

Ces espaces de retrait et de contemplation, sont montrés en dehors de leur dimension fonctionnelle, pour leur réalité architecturale, dans une presque nudité. La lumière reprend tous ses droits et exprime pleinement sa présence, soulignant une forme de ritualisation, notamment dans l’organisation des surfaces.

Penchant pleinement du côté de la photographie plasticienne plutôt que de l’image d’architecture, cette série interroge l’entre-deux, la transition, la suspension, l’interstice, la trace et l’absence. Elle donne à voir le « cadre » de l’art contemporain et révèle ces espaces qui « servent » la création. Ces lieux vidés acquièrent une nouvelle profondeur, existent en soi, pour soi. Ce

The exhibition spaces are seen without their functional dimension, in an almost naked architectural reality, as places of withdrawal and contemplation. Light recovers its full power of expression and presence, highlighting surfaces and shapes in a ritualistic kind of way. Éric Chenal’s images are related not so much to architectural pictures as to art photography. The White Inside series questions what comes between: the transition, the suspension, the gap, the trace and the absence. It shows the “context” of contemporary art and reveals spaces that “serve” artistic creativity. The empty rooms acquire a new depth; they exist in themselves and for themselves. Moreover, the project includes themes dear to the author, such as mediation, transfiguration and light.

This series has been launched in the Greater Region – at Ca sino Luxembourg, Mudam Luxembourg, Centre Pom pi douMetz, Frac Lorraine, Synagogue de Delme and Centre d’art Dominique Lang – and aims to extend to other exhibition venues in Europe.

L’installation multimédia Poppy – Trails of Afghan Heroin de Ro bert Knoth et Antoinette de Jong s’inscrit dans le cadre de la quatrième édition du Mois Européen de la Photographie qui, sous le thème de DistURBANces, interroge les relations de la réalité et de la fiction. En posant la question de l’image contemporaine, la photographie aujourd’hui met en scène des situations les plus invraisemblables qui émergent du réel comme les plus réalistes qui naissent dans et de la fiction.

Poppy, une panoplie d’images qui interagissent dans la complexité de l’installation – des documents qui se répondent et des images qui se correspondent – pourrait être une simple fiction. Mais l’histoire que Knoth et de Jong nous racontent se base essentiellement sur un travail journalistique et photographique documentaire. Tout commence, comme le titre l’indique, par une image d’un champ de pavot dont la beauté vive cache une triste réalité morbide. Ces pavots somnifères (Papaver somniferum) cultivés pour être transformés en drogue sont à la base d’un trafic illicite qui a ses origines en Afghanistan. Ce périple qui décrit les transformations du pavot, aboutissant à cet opiacé synthétique connu sous le nom de héroïne, et qui raconte les étapes du commerce illicite de cette drogue, est minutieusement documenté par les deux artistes. Ainsi, des champs de fleurs vives en Afgha nis tan jusqu’à la jungle concrète de Londres, Poppy retrace la route internationale de la production et de la distribution de l’héroïne à travers douze pays différents tout en dénonçant

aussi les conséquences de ce trafic sur le terrorisme et le crime organisé.

Mais l’histoire de ce voyage ne se veut ni linéaire, ni chronologique et si certains passages sont plus descriptifs que d’autres, l’ensemble ne manque pas d’images évocatrices et métaphoriques. La riche documentation, très réaliste, que le couple Knoth & De Jong, dans leur approche à la fois journalistique, photographique et documentaire ont rassemblé depuis de longues années, se mêle aux images artistiques, plus abstraites voire plus fictionnelles. Ainsi, à travers cette présentation panoramique composée de quatre projections le spectateur est propulsé dans un univers kaléidoscopique qui le confronte aux différents niveaux et aux différentes dimensions de ce thème sociétal et politique.

En pointant le côté obscur et complexe de la globalisation, cette installation multimédia, qui combine la photographie, l’image en mouvement, le texte, la voix et le matériel d’archive, extrait de YouTube, expose ainsi le contexte et les conséquences du voyage de l’héroïne de l’est vers l’ouest, en montrant sur son passage les conflits, les maladies, les crimes ainsi que l’extrême pauvreté qui touche ces pays.

Cette installation multimédia, produite par Paradox, se caractérise par la force dénonciatrice de ses images mais aussi par la réflexion qu’elle suscite à l’égard de l’évolution de la photographie en train de quitter sa bi-dimensionnalité pour devenir un média à multiples dimensions.

The multimedia installation Poppy –Trails of Afghan Heroin investigates the relations between reality and fiction. Questioning the contemporary image, photography today showcases the most unlikely situations emerging from the real as well as the most realistic settings born out of fiction.

Poppy, an array of images interacting within the complexity of the installation - documents responding to and corresponding with each other- could be a simple fiction. However, the story that Knoth and De Jong tell us, is based essentially on journalism and documentary photography. The story begins, as the title points to, with a poppy field, whose striking beauty hides a sad and even deadly reality. The somniferous poppies (Papaver somniferum) cultivated to be transformed into drugs are the starting point of an illicit traffic originating in Afghanistan. The trail, which describes the mutations of the poppy flower, ending in the synthetic opacity called heroin and telling the different stages of the illegal drug traffic, is meticulously documented by the two artists.

Thus, from the vivid poppy fields in Afghanistan to London’s concrete jungle, Poppy traces the international production and distribution trail of heroin through twelve different countries, decrying also the consequences of this traffic for terrorism and organised crime. But the story of this journey does not mean to be linear or chronological.

Some passages may be more descriptive than others, the ensemble however doesn’t lack ostensive and even metaphoric images.

The rich and realistic journalistic and photographic documentation that Knoth and De Jong (they have covered many stories in war zones) have been gathering for many years fuses with more abstract and artistic, even fictitious images. Through the panoramic presentation constituted of four projections, the viewer is thrown into a kaleidoscopic universe confronting him to the different levels and dimensions of this societal and political issue.

Pointing toward the dark and complexe sides of globalisation, this multimedia installation, combining photography, moving images, text, voice, archival material, as well as clips from YouTube, shows the context and the consequences of the poppy journey from east to west, visualising conflicts, sickness, crime and extreme poverty in the countries along its trail.

Produced by Paradox, this multimedia installation is caracterised by the denouncing force of its images, but also by the reflection it provokes about the evolution of photography leaving its two dimensional state behind to become a multi layered media.

Collection permanente The Bitter Years, USA 1935-1941 The Bitter Years est la dernière exposition qu’Edward Stei chen a organisée en tant que Directeur du Département de la photographie au MoMA. Réalisée en 1962, c’est un hommage à la photographie documentaire, rassemblant plus de 200 images issues d’un des plus grands projets collectifs de l’histoire de la photographie : la documentation de l’Amérique rurale lors de la Grande Dépression par la FSA. Sous la direction de Roy Stryker, des photographes aujourd’hui mondialement connus, tels que Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein ou Russell Lee, ont sillonné leur pays pour constituer un imagier bouleversant de l’Amérique en crise. Plus de 170 000 négatifs sont issus de cette commande gouvernementale dont le but était de soutenir la politique du New Deal de Franklin D. Roosevelt. Ils sont aujourd’hui conservés par la Library of Congress, et font partie de la mémoire collective américaine. Steichen, lui-même, les considérait comme « les documents humains les plus remarquables jamais rendus en images ». Cinquante ans après son exposition au MoMA, The Bitter Years s’ouvre à nouveau au public au château d’eau à Dudelange. Permanent collection The Bitter Years, USA 1935-1941 The Bitter Years is Edward Steichen’s last exhibition he curated as the director of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Created in 1962, it represents a tribute to documentary photography. The exhibition consists of over 200 pictures originating from one of the largest collective projects in the history of photography: the documentation of rural America during the Great Depression by the Farm Security Administration.

Under the direction of Roy Stryker, worldwide acclaimed photographers like Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein or Russell Lee traveled through America to depict a harrowing image of the crisis in the United States. More than 170.000 negatives were produced during the governmental order, whose goal was to support Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal policy. Today, the photographs are preserved by the Library of Congress and are an integral part of the American collective memory. Steichen himself considered them “the most remarkable human documents ever captured”. Fifty years after his exhibition at the MoMA, The Bit ter Years is shown again to the public in the water tower in Dudelange, Luxembourg. The images have lost nothing of their strength and are still pervasive documents of the human condition.

Stephen Gill Coexistence Coexistence est le résultat d’une commande photographique que le CNA a assigné en 2011 à l’artiste britannique Ste phen Gill en perspective de l’exposition inaugurale du Waassertuerm+Pomhouse en septembre 2012. Les défis du projet impliquaient l’adoption d’une démarche in situ tout autant pour la prise en compte du lieu que pour la mise en dialogue avec la collection The Bitter Years, hébergée dans le Waassertuerm. Pour répondre à cette commande, Stephen Gill arpente la friche industrielle autour du château d’eau de Dudelange et, de sa résidence en plein cœur du quartier Italie, il part à la rencontre de son sujet. Aussitôt, Gill est interpellé par les bassins d’eau évoquant en lui la fascination du monde microscopique, une expérience révélatrice vécue pendant son adolescence. Il s’est littéralement plongé dans cet univers microscopique à travers lequel il explore minutieusement et patiemment ce terrain délaissé, rempli de mémoires et de souvenirs.

Après six semaines de travail intensif et une interaction complice entre l’artiste, le lieu et la population locale, Stephen Gill nous présente aujourd’hui des tableaux munis de petites et grandes histoires dans lesquels se dessinent des parallèles entre les modèles et processus de la vie microscopique des bassins et ceux de l’être humain en tant qu’être individuel constituant notre société. Le langage visuel développé par l’artiste nous offre une manière insolite de raconter un lieu, une époque, un contexte. Stephen Gill travaille avec différents matériaux, techniques photographiques, une multitude de détails et de strates dans une même image pour capturer et révéler l’esprit du lieu. De par son approche, il remet en lumière le questionnement du langage photographique et notre manière de parler du monde aujourd’hui.

Coexistence is the outcome of a commission awarded to British artist Stephen Gill by the CNA in 2011 in anticipation of the inaugural exhibition of the Waassertuerm+Pomhouse, two new sites dedicated to photography in Luxembourg. The brief was to work in situ and create a body of works that offer a dialogue between the unique site – and its indusdtrial heritage – with the CNA’s archival collection The Bitter Years, housed by the Waassertuerm. Stephen Gill’s immediate response was to survey the industrial wasteland around the Dudelange water tower. He spent six weeks living in the Italian quarter of the Dudelange, and embarked on an intense period of research and creation. The industrial cooling ponds immediately appealed to Gill, who has had a fascination for insects and microbes since childhood. Gill immersed himself in the microscopic universe of the cooling ponds.

He meticulously and patiently explored the abandoned terrain, aware of the memories and souvenirs it holds.

After six weeks of intense interaction with the site and the local population, Stephen Gill created a body of work that tells many stories. Coexistence ultimately seeks to draw parallels between the microscopic life of the ponds and the individual beings making up our society. The visual language developed by the artist offers an unusual way of telling the story of a site, an era, and context.

He works with various materials and photographic techniques, using a multitude of details and layers within one image to capture and reveal the spirit of the site. As a series, Coexistence questions the photographic language and how we document the world today.

ROBERT CAHEN A poet of a liquefiable world, Cahen reiterates with merriness as much

as melancholy a double topos of classical poetry: tempus fugit and carpe diem. Karine (1976) is composed of several hundred photos of a little girl endlessly reframed. As if the rostrum camera had the capacity to return photography to life and movement, while stating that the time of youth is over. What is figured here is not only the passing of time – pictures are not shown in chronological order –, but rather the whirlpools of memory.

Karine is alternatively a little girl, a baby, a very young child; the future teenager is only outlined since the author remains on the threshold of this age. Time is folded, folded back again, deconstructed, and reconstructed in an intimate cameo of the fascinating and beloved child, which however leaves Karine with her mystery and the secrets of her childhood. (...)

Robert Cahen’s wisdom lies in accompanying the movement of time, but to do it as a musician: sehr langsam. Somehow video can be compared with the magic lantern, a Proustien object with which the child who dwells within each man can project pictures on the wall of his bedroom and tell himself stories to evade time. But the artist knows the secret of the world, and Cahen’s videos disclose it, also matching the last words of In Search of Lost Time, so simple and so terrible: everything is in time.

Initiée lors de Luxembourg et Grande Région, Capitale Européenne de la Culture 2007, la Triennale Jeune Création 2013, organisée par l’Espace culturel CarréRotondes et le Centre national de l’audiovisuel (CNA), entame cette année sa troisième édition. Elle est conçue comme une plateforme pour artistes émergents et participe activement au développement de la scène locale et internationale. Tous les trois ans, un(e) commissaire est invité(e) à thématiser la Triennale et à assurer la sélection des artistes.

Cette année, le thème proposé par la commissaire invitée Michèle Wale rich est le paysage considéré sous ses aspects naturels et urbains. Dans un contexte contemporain d’hypermobilité et de connectivité, l’exposition titrée You I Landscape propose de reconsidérer les liens que nous entretenons avec notre environnement, aussi bien comme expérience intime et personnelle que comme construction culturelle et sociale. L’analyse de cet espace collectif se fera à l’aide des supports les plus divers : photographie, vidéo, dessin, créations 3D, performance...

Launched during Luxembourg and Greater Region, European Capital of Culture 2007, the Triennale Jeune Création, organised this year by CarréRotondes and the Centre national de l’audiovisuel (CNA) is gearing up for its third edition in 2013. It has been conceived as a platform for young artists, helping in the development of the local and international scene. Every three years, a curator is invited to conceptualise the Triennale and to select the artists.

This year, the topic chosen by guest curator Michèle Walerich is that of landscape, viewed in its natural as well as urban dimensions. In the contemporary context of hypermobility and connectivity, the aptly titled You I Landscape exhibition reconsiders our relationship with our environment on a personal as well as cultural and social level. The analysis of said reality will be conducted through various mediums ranging from photography and drawing to video, 3D objects and performance.

Hito Steyerl Dans le cadre des invitations de l’AICA et du Mois Européen de la Photographie, Sophie Jung présente l’installation intitulée Touch That Angel, Touch My Angle au Kiosk/AICA Luxembourg. Ce projet évolutif et interactif s’inscrit dans la poïétique de Sophie Jung, jeune artiste émergeante luxembourgeoise qui décontextualise et déconstruit les images photographiques. Ses interrogations artistiques portent sur l’impact de l’image sous ses formes digitalisées les plus diverses.

Le kiosk à journaux où se mélangent images et textes sur papier a-t-il définitivement laissé la place à l’écran où tout se mêle ? Dédoublement conflictuel entre privé et public, vision fragmentaire de l’image séparant la tête du corps.

Il y a l’image de la main avec son geste protecteur et destructeur, celle de la main caressante et enveloppante mais qui cadre et qui exclut, aussi. Ce paradoxe est annoncé dans le titre : entre toucher l’« ange » ou/et l’« angle », la réflexion sur le photographique porte aussi sur le passage d’un toucher « sensitif » (le corps-doigt-digitus) à un toucher « cognitif » (la machine - caméra digitale).

Magic or Dreams The theme of the exhibition of four Finnish female photographers – Mari Hokkanen, Anni Kinnunen, Kati Leinonen and Susanna Majuri is magic and dreams. Together their images create a fairy tale of an imaginary magical world, where the laws of everyday life do not exist. The exhibition comprises both photographs and video films.

Nature is an important element in these works. In her series Imaginary Homeland, Susanna Majuri declares that water paints with her, it emerges people and landscape together. In the images of Kati Leinonen, water makes reflections on the surface of the oily pond to become a path to the magical underworld. Performance is a starting point for the art works of Anni Kinnunen and Mari Hokkanen. In her Personal landscape series, Anni Kinnunen explores the spaces where nature and urban environment meet, paying special interest on human marks in nature. The Flower performances series by Mari Hokkanen is based on narrative photographic stories with flowers. Hokkanen builds her pictures from symbols and metaphors.

Chez Carine Kraus, le doute n’est pas une condition a priori, mais un moment fugace, une expression corporelle, un GERSON sentiment qui n’est pas figé mais qui BETTENCOURT FERREIRA semble suspendu dans une matière picTapaaminen Puistossa turale subtile. À la base, Carine Kraus se sert des photographies qu’elle a prises, comme un matériau de référence, mais sa technique transcende le réalisme photographique. Souvent les sujets sont des artistes au travail, par exemple un peintre dans son atelier ou des danseurs en représentation. Ces figures sont transformées en anatomies anonymes, dont Carine Kraus filtre des éléments qui forment des images qui se sont détachées de leur temps. Il est difficile de situer ou même de fixer ces figurations dans une époque, il ne s’agit pas de souvenirs ou de memento mori, mais plutôt d’une transposition du moment, de l’instant. En un certain sens, Carine Kraus peint des instants pour en faire des éternités.

Elle cherche à produire un sentiment temporel intime et profond, au lieu d’en faire une science quantifiable. L’essentiel de son travail réside dans cette réduction des éléments de la composition picturale et une sublimation de la matière picturale. Ce qui semble comme un simple aplat s’avère être un abîme de couleur qui nous permet de plonger dans un espace des variations et des nuances de coloris.

Ce projet a été conçu en 2009 lors d’un séjour au Helsinki International artist in residence programme (HIAP) à Helsinki.

Il s’agit ici, du premier et principal volet d’un corpus constitué de quatre séries distinctes réalisées lors de cette résidence.

Telles des nouvelles, elles ont été rassemblées sous le titre suivant : Tapaaminen Puistossa and Other Artistic Tapas.

L’ubiquité chimérique Mon travail photographique se traduit par une approche simple et directe d’une population ancrée dans son univers social, également matérialisé par un territoire. Alors que mes portraits abordent les sujets de façon individuelle, je me retrouve ici, face à l’omniprésence du groupe. Confronté à cette situation nouvelle, j’ai très vite écarté le principe de la composition groupée, notamment pour échapper au risque de voir ce travail devenir une pantomime du fameux Déjeuner sur l’herbe. Sans toutefois ignorer l’importance d’une telle référence, cette distanciation m’a permis d’expérimenter de nouvelles possibilités venues enrichir ma démarche.

Le groupe est traité en tant qu’entité, afin de ne pas altérer le contexte. Pour préserver l’individualité de chacun, j’ai choisi d’éclater le groupe, non pas par une séparation physique, en

déplaçant les personnages, mais plutôt en décomposant la situation originale. Le résultat est une composition en plusieurs volets. Ceux-ci sont présentés séparément, mais restent reliés les uns aux autres par un trait d’union visuel, exprimé par quelques fragments, dont l’écho crée une réciprocité visuelle.

Jusque-là, ce système de représentation n’induisait aucune modification majeure de point de vue qui aurait pu sensiblement altérer la lecture de l’image [...]

Par contre, le fractionnement d’une situation, associé à un changement du point de vue [du photographe], ouvre l’espace de telle sorte qu’une dimension supplémentaire se crée.

On serait face à une simple acrobatie formelle si la question de notre rapport à la perception et à la représentation de l’image n’était pas posée. Je pense en l’occurrence à la question de l’ubiquité de l’image. D’autres média, dans leur manière d’aborder l’espace, amorcent cette possibilité. Le cinéma et son utilisation du champ contre-champ – pour marquer un antagonisme ou soutenir un dialogue – ou encore la sculpture dont le rond de bosse permet, au spectateur, d’appréhender l’objet sous de multiples facettes constituent de bons exemples. Ceci n’exclut pas que la photographie soit en reste, différents procédés privilégiant, entre autres, la superposition ou la répétition, le démontrent.

The project developed during the Helsinki International artis residency programm (HIAP July - August 2009) is almost a continuation of some of the past projects articulate on leisure by the artist.

The result of his experience in Suomenlinna reflects his working methodology is divided into four different chapters that could be compared if borrowing the literature terminology, to short stories.

The artist uses the word from the cuisine terminology, “tapas”.

Tapaaminen Puistossa The first topic is about his first meeting with the finnish culture when he tries to learn some basic finish, one of these recorded lessons was called Tapaaminen puistossa. The artist develops a real interest for the way people use and appropriate during the brief period of their stay, the public space and how they build with an invisible fence their territory. This project also is on how to photograph groups differently. It’s not just a formal concern, the artist uses quite often views that split the space and people as well and in some situations he changes his position so as to be able to photograph points of view, so as to open up the space.

Boatpeople There are 850 000 boats in Finland, from the smallest to biggest. If in many cases owning boats is still a status symbol, it’s not limited to that. The artist is clearly fascinated by the relationship people in Finland have with the sea.

Rakastan Jäätelöä It’s a refreshing look not just into a common habit, but it’s also about a relationship between a portrait and an ice-cream.

Look Back, a Leggings Project This is another artistic tapas of this light-hearted series. In this work the artist systematically cast an eye over a fashion trend common to a generation of girls, the use of leggings.

AROL POÉTIQUE DE LA LÉGENDE AROL sont les lettres communes de deux prénoms (cA ROLe et hAROLd). Le projet artistique a vu le jour d’abord à travers l’échange de carnets d’esquisses, de mails, de photos… avant d’aboutir en 2011 à une œuvre conceptuelle. Dans leurs différentes séries où se mêlent figures, structures et mots, ils posent la question de la pratique photographique en terme de délimitation des genres et des expressions plastiques. « Nous sommes entourés, accompagnés d’éléments, d’histoires, objets, personnages, lieux, porteurs d’une charge de fiction ou de merveilleux. Notre conscience peut en être vive ou atténuée, selon les individus, les époques et les cultures.

C’est un phénomène qu’on observe sous toutes les latitudes et depuis les premiers âges. Partout, toujours, l’humanité se construit et s’enveloppe dans un édifice de récits fabuleux, de légendes, d’abord d’origine orale et comme tels évoluant avec l’imaginaire populaire ou poétique, en s’amplifiant ou en se chargeant de symboles pour parfois atteindre une dimension mythique. Malgré son scientisme affiché, notre époque moderne poursuit la pente immémoriale. Les vieilles croyances ont la vie dure ; nombre de légendes urbaines trouvent leurs racines dans des traditions ou des superstitions plus anciennes.

Sa force imagée, l’importance accordée à la forme, c’est à dire au signifiant, apparente la légende à la poésie. Il y a quelque chose de mnémotechnique dans la légende comme dans la poésie, quelque chose d’incantatoire où chaque mot compte, au service de l’évocation d’une image. Sans doute l’expression poétique tend-elle à ses buts propres, notamment la maximisation des ressources de la langue pour atteindre à l’évocation d’une image, d’un sentiment ou d’une idée par le

rythme et le poids des mots. Pourtant les correspondances entre poésie et légende sont nombreuses et subtiles. Elles ont toutes deux une origine orale, mais ont un lien fort à l’écrit : l’étymologie latine de legenda signifie « qui doit être lu », tandis que la poésie s’est progressivement fixée dans des textes. La poésie est l’œuvre d’un faiseur, un créateur de formes expressives, signifiantes ; la légende, quant à elle, est une création collective qui favorise finalement l’intention spirituelle ou morale, le signifiant ici encore, par rapport à la précision ou la vérité historique. Poésie et légende cherchent à frapper l’imagination en privilégiant le signe. Il nous semble que la poésie et la légende, comme le rêve d’ailleurs, intensifient l’émotion et augmentent le sens en combinant plusieurs pensées pour produire une image.

Gaston Bachelard (L’Air et les Songes, 1943) évoque le rôle d’« opérateurs d’élévation » des images poétiques. Nous comprenons cette observation comme s’appliquant tant aux images mentales que sont par exemple les concepts, les métaphores ou les rêves, qu’aux images dites artificielles, enregistrement ou reconstruction du réel telles la photographie ou la peinture, pour autant que soit toujours présente la composante poétique de l’image.

Où que nous tournions le regard autour de nous dans le monde, nous sommes sensibles aux éléments porteurs de légendes, d’histoires ou de croyances variées, à la force iconique, catalytique et souvent poétique de certains objets.

C’est sur la base de notre ancrage culturel européen combiné à nos métissages respectifs que nous avons souhaité enrichir nos images en les rapprochant de toutes les poésies de nos mondes intérieurs.

Nous souhaitons éviter l’hermétisme, mettre en avant le signe, évoquer le besoin universel de rêve, d’élévation ou de mysticisme en dénichant leurs catalyseurs, interroger le regard et la sensibilité, proposer des signifiants multiples en combinant des images « artificielles » à celles « mentales » issues du champ de la poétique, et toujours humblement placer nos pas dans l’ombre tutélaire d’innombrables poètes. »

Poetics of the Legend We are surrounded and accompanied by elements, stories, objects, characters and places that are bearers of fiction and wonder. Our consciousness may be lively or attenuated, depending on the individual, the period and the culture. It is a phenomenon seen in all latitudes and since earliest times. Everywhere and always, humanity constructs itself and encloses itself within an edifice of (initially oral) fabulous stories and legends, and as such evolving with the popular or poetic imagination, by amplifying itself or in loading itself with symbols to sometimes reach a mythical dimension. Despite its displayed scientism, our modern era continues on the immemorial slope. Old beliefs have a hard time; numerous urban legends have roots in older traditions or superstitions.

Its image power and the importance given to form, meaning the signified, links the legend to poetry. There is a somewhat mnemonic side to the legend, as with poetry, something incantatory where each word counts, in the service of the evocation of an image. Poetic expression undoubtedly tends towards its own ends, chiefly the maximization of the resources of language to attain the evocation of an image, feeling or idea through the rhythm and weight of words. However, the similarities between poetry

and legend are numerous and subtle. They are both originally oral but have a strong connection to writing: the Latin etymology legenda means «that should be read», while poetry progressively became fixed in texts. Poetry is the work of a maker, a creator of expressive, meaningful forms whereas the legend is a collective creation that ultimately favours spiritual or moral intention (the signifier yet again) over precision or historical truth. Poetry and legend seek to strike the imagination by favouring the sign. Il seems that poetry and legend, as dreams of elsewhere, intensify emotion and increase meaning by combining several thoughts to produce an image.

Gaston Bachelard (l’Air et les Songes - 1943) evokes the role of poetic images as “elevation operators». This observation can be applied both to mental images (that are concepts, metaphors or dreams, for example) and images that are said to be artificial, recording or reconstructing the real like photography or painting, provided that the poetic component of the image is still present.

Wherever we look in the world, we are sensitive to elements pertaining to varied legends, tales or beliefs and the iconic, catalytic and often poetic power of certain objects. On the basis of our

European cultural anchorage, combined with our respective mixing, we have wished to enrich our images by bringing together all the poetry of our internal worlds.

We hope to avoid hermeticism, highlight the sign, evoke the universal need of dreams, elevation and mysticism by revealing their catalysers, questioning the gaze and sensibility, offering multiple signifies by combining «artificial» images with «mental» ones from the poetic field, and always humbly following in the footsteps of countless poets.

In der Ausstellung sind Werke von Bernd und Hilla Be cher und ausgewählte Arbeiten der ersten Generation ihrer Fotoklasse an der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie zu sehen. Die nüchtern, sachliche Bildsprache und das genaue Erfassen von Details und Strukturen sind das Vermächtnis der Bechers und kennzeichnet auch die Arbeiten ihrer Schüler, die längst selbst Fotogeschichte geschrieben haben.

Bernd und Hilla Becher fotografierten systematisch seit Ende der 1950er Jahre anonyme Zweckbauten und Industrieanlagen wie Gasbehälter, Hochhöfen, Kühltürme und Getreidesilos. Diese lichteten sie frontal, ohne Lichtund Schattenwirkungen, in Schwarz-Weiß ab. Viele dieser Bauten existieren heute nicht mehr, so dass den in enzyklopädischer Breite aufgenommenen Bildern auch große kulturgeschichtliche Bedeutung zukommt.

Die ehemaligen Becher-Schüler Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Axel Hütte, Thomas Ruff, Jörg Sasse und Thomas Struth beschäftigen sich hingegen mit unterschiedlichen Themen: vom Porträt bei Thomas Ruff über das Landschaftsbild bei Axel Hütte, Innenräume bei Candida Höfer bis hin zum „Allover“ der Singapurer Börse von Andreas Gursky ist alles vertreten. Die zumeist großformatigen Farbfotografien basieren auf intensiven, konzeptionellen Vorarbeiten und minutiösen digitalen Nachbearbeitungen des Negativs, bei denen jedem Detail Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt wird. Ihre Bilder beeinflussen die Entwicklung der künstlerischen Fotografie nachhaltig.

Deutsche Bank Collection Writing History The exhibition features photographs by Bernd and Hilla Becher as well as selected work from the first generation of their photography class at the Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie. The sober, matter of fact visual representation and the precise recording of details and structures are the legacy of the Bechers, and characterize also the work of their alumni.

Bernd and Hilla Becher started their systematic investigation of functional buildings and industrial plants, such as blast furnaces, water towers or silos toward the end of the 1950s.

The style of their body of work recorded entirely in black and white is frontal and devoid of any light or shadow effects. Today, many of the buildings do not exist anymore, which confers an important cultural and historical dimension to their images marked by an encyclopedic scope.

The former Becher students Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Axel Hütte, Thomas Ruff, Jörg Sasse and Thomas Struth cover a wide range of subjects, from portraits (Thomas Ruff), to landscape (Axel Hütte) or interiors (Candida Höfer) to Gur sky’s “Allover” scenes from the stock exchange in Singapore.

The mostly large format color photographs rely on an intensive conceptual preparation and careful manipulation of the negative where every detail gets particular attention. Their images are a consistent influence in the development of art photography.

Für den 1963 geborenen, in Münster lebenden Künstlerfotografen Thomas Wre de ist die Realität eine Frage der Perspektive. In seinen Werkserien, die er mit analoger Fototechnik ablichtet, operiert er mit verschiedenen Wirklichkeitsebenen, inszeniert Wahrnehmungsbrüche und Sehnsuchtsmotive. Bei der Serie Manhattan Picture Worlds verschmelzen überdimensionale Werbeflächen mit dem umgebenden Außenraum zu einer neuen Kulisse. Was wie montiert wirkt, sind zu einem günstigen Zeitpunkt aus einem interessanten Blickwinkel aufgenommene Großstadtpanoramen mit sich überlagernden Wirklichkeiten. Die großformatigen Real Landscapes zeigen wirkliche Landschaftsräume, in die der Künstler kleine Modelle eingebaut hat. Letztere brechen die Suggestionskraft der Bilder und machen stutzig, was denn nun und mit welcher Intention abgelichtet ist Thomas Wredes Fotografien benötigen Zeit. Neben dem aktiven Warten auf den richtigen Aufnahmemoment sind insbesondere die Vorarbeiten – Konzeption, Planung, Suche nach Aufnahmeorten, Modellbauten, Testaufnahmen - langwierig und arbeitsintensiv. Für die Real Landscapes sind darüber hinaus Licht- und Wetterverhältnisse entscheidend. Die Arbeiten suggerieren unbekannte Landschaften von heroischer, aber trügerischer, surrealer Schönheit. In Wirklichkeit handelt es sich bei den Landschaftspanoramen meist um kleine Ausschnitte in menschenleeren, verlassenen Industriebrachen oder endlosen Sandstränden, die mit einer niedrigen Aufnahmeperspektive und Weitwinkelobjektiv aufgenommen werden. Tho mas Wrede hinterfragt mit all seinen Arbeiten die Aussagekraft und Wahrhaftigkeit von Fotografie und spielt mit unserer Wahrnehmung von Wirklichkeiten.

Aufgrund der intensiven Vorbereitung entstehen jedes Jahr eine überschaubare Anzahl neuer Arbeiten. In der Bitburger Ausstellung wird ein Überblick über Thomas Wredes in den letzten 15 Jahren geschaffene Werkserien gegeben.

Thomas Wrede Staging and Reality For Thomas Wrede, born 1963 and living in Münster, reality is a question of perspective. In his work, entirely created with analogue photographic techniques, he operates with varying levels of reality; he stages breaches in perception and orchestrates themes of longing. For his series Manhattan Picture Worlds, oversized billboards are melting with their environmental spaces to form a new setting. The large format Real Landscapes show existing landscapes into which the artist has build miniature models. These contrast with the suggestive power of the images and trigger questions about notions of the real as well as intentions of the artist in making the photograph.

The Bitburg exhibition shows 40 large format photographs from 13 years of Wrede’s career, starting in early 2000.

Parts of the exhibition were showed in a similar display in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Berlin. The exhibition is accompanied by a detailed catalogue.

Reiner Riedler, Fake Holidays Reiner Riedler décrit dans son travail Fake Holidays les efforts illimités du lobby touristique à traduire dans la réalité les attentes sociales. L’attitude des touristes reflète une relation perturbée vis-à-vis de ce qui est authentique. La contrainte de rendre la fiction réelle aboutit dans des parcs d’attractions artificiels et monumentaux. Cette philosophie est encore favorisée par l’industrie qui ne produit pas seulement, mais devient inventeur de nouveaux mondes. Rêves et émotions sont déclarés produits de vente, aventures et frissons sont commercialisés, la culture est mélangée à des clichés pour former un collage bigarré.

In his work Fake Holidays, Reiner Riedler describes the boundless efforts of the tourism lobby to translate societal expectations into reality. The attitude of tourists reflects a disturbed relationship with what is authentic. The pressure of making fiction reality results in artificial and monumental amusement parks. This philosophy is also favoured by the industry that not only produces but becomes the inventor of new worlds. Dreams and emotions are declared goods for sale, adventures and thrills are commercialised, culture is combined with clichés to form a gaudy collage.

Thomas Wrede, Manhattan Picture Worlds Thomas Wrede illustre comment s’entremêlent l’espace réel et celui représenté dans sa série Manhattan Picture Worlds. Les affiches publicitaires monumentales envahissent l’espace public et définissent sa perception. Une nouvelle esthétique se crée, dont les formes et les contenus s’imposent à la réalité sans pour autant devenir concrets. Les photographies montrent l’environnement réel comme un assemblage de différents univers d’images hétérogènes. Les lois optiques de la profondeur se perdent dans la multitude de diverses perspectives graphiques. À la fin, seul le photographe semble pouvoir maîtriser le paysage urbain entrelacé : le médium photographique réussit à figer image fictive et espace réel sur un même plan dans une composition rythmée et dynamique.

Thomas Wrede illustrates how real space and that represented in his series Manhattan Picture Worlds intermingle. The monumental advertising signs penetrate public space, defining its perception. A new aesthetic is created, the forms and contents of which impose themselves on reality without however becoming concrete.

The photographs show the real environment as an assembly of different universes featuring heterogeneous images. The optical laws of depth are lost in the multitude of various graphic perspectives. At the end, only the photographer appears to be able to master the intertwined urban landscape: the photographic medium succeeds in freezing the fictive image and real space on the same plane in a rhythmic and dynamic composition.

Michel Medinger, Pompes à essence Les Pompes à Essence de Michel Medinger appartiennent à une espèce en voie de disparition. Il faut de la patience et un regard attentif pour découvrir ces objets rares. Aujourd’hui, les chefs-d’œuvre industriels, dont le design a encore su assembler individualité et richesse formelle, semblent immerger dans le décor. Comme des gardiens les pompes persistent sur place et bravent les intempéries et la dégradation.

Elles portent la rouille avec dignité. Dans leurs compteurs se reflète une époque révolue qui rappelle au contemplateur l’écoulement du temps. Leur exposition en tant qu’installation photographique à ciel ouvert apparaît surréelle et étrange : réduites à leur représentation et dépourvues de leur fonction, elles restent comme souvenirs.

Michel Medinger’s Petrol Pumps are part of a dying breed. Patience and attention are necessary for discovering these rare objects. Today, these industrial masterpieces, the design of which exudes individuality and a formal richness, appear to be immersed in the scenery. Like custodians, the pumps remain rooted to the spot, braving bad weather and exposed to deterioration.

They carry their rust with dignity. Their counters reflect a bygone era, reminding the observer of the passage of time. Their exhibition as an open-air photographic installation appears surreal and strange: reduced to their representation and stripped of their function, they remain souvenirs.

Pia Elizondo, Jungle d’asphalte Les images de Pia Elizondo reflètent la relation entre l’homme et l’animal. Dans le milieu urbain, l’animal est domestiqué. S’il a su préserver sa nature sauvage, il a pourtant perdu sa liberté. Les images photographiées au zoo de la ville de Mexico illustrent le regard insolite de l’homme sur l’animal. La confrontation humaine avec l’animal « sauvage » est basée sur une fascination inconsciente. Simultanément, l’homme tient à manifester sa dominance. Le vignettage des images traduit l’étroitesse des enclos pour animaux conçus et accordés par l’homme et souligne une perspective voyeuriste. L’homme démontre sa domination en traçant une limite aussi bien optique que réelle.

Pia Elizondo’s images reflect the relationship between man and animal. In an urban environment, the animal is domesticated. It may have succeeded in retaining its wild nature, but in exchange it has lost its freedom. The images captured in Mexico City’s zoo illustrate the unwonted view man has of animals. The human confrontation with the “wild” animal is based on a subconscious fascination. At the same time, man is anxious to manifest his dominance. The vignetting of the images reflects the narrowness of the animals’ enclosures, designed and signed off by man, and highlights a voyeuristic perspective. Man demonstrates his superiority by drawing a line, both optically and in reality.

Marc Cellier, Entre chien et loup Ce point de vue change dans le travail de Marc Cellier. Ses photographies ouvrent le regard sur le paysage urbain nocturne : marqué par l’absence de l’homme, l’espace public devient la scène pour d’autres acteurs. Le terrain qui est occupé dans la journée par l’homme est reconquis dans l’obscurité par l’animal. Malheureusement les images ne dévoilent pas, si ce changement se répète continuellement ou si l’homme a abandonné les coulisses pour toujours ? Dans ce dernier cas, il y a une question qui préoccupe le spectateur et qui renforce son inquiétude : Est-ce que l’animal a survécu à l’homme ? Et est-ce que la croyance humaine en sa dominance par rapport à l’animal n’a été finalement qu’une conviction utopique ?

Marc Cellier’s work shows a different point of view. His photographs illustrate the nocturnal urban landscape: marked by the absence of man, the public space becomes the scene for other actors. The ground that during the day is occupied by man is recaptured by animals at night. Unfortunately, the images do not reveal whether this changeover continually repeats itself or whether man has forever abandoned the scenes? In the latter case, one question continues to haunt the observer, deepening his concern: has animal survived man? And has man’s belief in his superiority over the animal been but a utopian belief at the end of the day?

WALDEN UN ENTRETIEN ENTRE ROBERT HORNUNG ET PAUL DI FELICE

Dans ta série Walden, la nature, même si elle n’est qu’à trois kilomètres d’un site urbain comme dans les expériences de Henry David Thoreau à la fin du XIXème siècle, est un lieu idéal pour plonger dans son propre « Moi ». Comment vois-tu cet hommage à Thoreau ?

Le projet Walden est d’abord un projet de livre, je dirais presque un livre-objet qui cherche par sa qualité de papier et sa mise en page d’éveiller chez celui qui le feuillette la mémoire des sens que le quotidien a fait sommeiller. À partir de l’édition, j’ai développé le projet dans une logique d’exposition qui reprend le thème initial de cette beauté banale de la forêt au quotidien en renforçant le propos formel esthétique.

L’immersion dans cette intemporalité et le ressourcement à partir d’une forêt qui se trouve à proximité de la ville est évidemment en écho avec l’expérience du philosophe américain de la fin du XIXème siècle Henry David Thoreau qui a vécu de façon primitive dans une hutte pendant deux ans dans la forêt à quelques kilomètres du village Walden en Massachusetts. C’est pendant cette période qu’il a écrit des textes philosophiques qui dénoncent l’industrialisation et la perte des valeurs humaines.

En nous rapprochant de la nature, nous nous rapprochons de nous-même. Lorsque nous sommes un peu plus nousmême et devenons un peu plus nature, il est dans la nature des choses que nous éviterons automatiquement de nuire à autrui. C’est cela la quintessence de H.D. Thoreau.

Plus qu’un hommage, ce serait plutôt une invitation à relire Thoreau et à redécouvrir le bien-fondé de ses idées et expériences. Mais c’est aussi un appel au public, à la pratique de se rendre plus souvent dans la nature, de s’y immerger, ne fut-ce pour quelques dizaines de minutes par-ci, par-là.

Donc, dans ta série réalisée entre juin 2011 et juin 2012 au Bambësch, à la périphérie de la ville de Luxembourg, la prise de conscience n’a pas seulement une portée individuelle mais s’inscrit aussi dans une thématique sociétale contemporaine.

D’abord, je pense que chaque photographie sera interprétée de façon différente, chaque lecteur invente sa propre histoire mais se rend compte aussi du cycle de la nature, de la répétition et de la renaissance que l’image documente. Chaque photographie est une forêt qu’il peut rapporter chez lui. Cette échappatoire lui permet peut-être de se retrouver par rapport à lui-même et par rapport à l’autre et ainsi de trouver un équilibre dans sa vie stressée.

Dans ta série, tu procèdes paradoxalement à la fois de façon conceptuelle et spontanée. Le protocole initial est clair : l’espace / temps est délimité, tu utilises toujours la même caméra et tu privilégies l’enregistrement banal. En cours de réalisation, les angles de vue ont changé légèrement, la grille de lecture s’est complexifiée.

C’est vrai que le dispositif initial était bien défini. N’oublions pas que j’étais aussi motivé par la dimension obsessionnelle, répétitive et sérielle du projet. Pendant deux ans, en parcourant des milliers de kilomètres dans ce petit bois, j’ai réalisé environ 15 000 photographies avec ma Leica M9 dotée d’objectifs 35 summicron et 21 summilux. En focalisant sur la banalité de mon sujet, ma première préoccupation, je me suis rendu compte à fur et à mesure de l’avancement du travail que je pouvais aussi explorer la richesse potentielle de ces enregistrements photographiques.

Peut-on parler de l’importance des deux temps « photographiques » ? Le temps de la prise de vue, concentrée sur la quotidienneté et la banalité de l’enregistrement et le temps du choix et de la lecture de l’image qui intensifie le propos initial en lui donnant peut-être une portée plus esthétique et éthique ?

Il y a même trois temps. Les millions d’images que j’ai dans la tête avant de commencer à photographier forment par la répétition de l’action comme une sorte de mantra photographique. Je me laisse d’abord guider par mes sentiments, les réflexions esthétiques et éthiques ne sont pas importantes quand je commence à photographier. Même si le postulat était d’explorer photographiquement la beauté banale du bois Bambësch, j’ai vite compris qu’il fallait aller au-delà de cette idée. J’ai fait moi-même l’expérience dont parle Thoreau dans ses textes et cela ne fait de sens que si ces sentiments peuvent

être partagés. C’est la raison pour laquelle la réception des photographies prend une importance considérable.

Avec les juxtapositions, parfois très subtiles, le paradoxe de l’image appelle des correspondances particulières. Le spectateur devient actif par une certaine réception créative de l’œuvre. Un jeu ludique et esthétique qui par la répétitivité et la verticalité peut devenir inquiétant ?

En effet c’est expressément voulu que le spectateur s’émancipe devant l’œuvre. Il s’agit là de l’automatisme du cerveau de référencer, voire de se faire une image à la hauteur de ses propres repères et filtres. Par conséquent si la répétition de verticalité peu paraître inquiétante, ce n’est que parce que, par le biais de notre mémoire, nous permettons à notre cerveau de nous jouer des tours en y associant des éléments de notre passé. C’est entre autre pour cela que j’ai renoncé dans cette œuvre à toute note explicative. Le sujet s’y prête idéalement à ce jeu interprétatif. En effet, la simple nature « banale », c’est-à-dire ces quelques dizaines d’hectares de forêt de culture devant nos portes, ne représentent vraiment pas de danger ou de mystère – si ce n’est que ceux produits par notre mémoire !

In your Walden series, nature, even if it’s only three kilometers from an urban site, as in the experience of Henry David Thoreau in the late XIXth century, is the ideal place to delve into one’s own “Ego”. How do you see this homage to Thoreau ?

Therefore, in your series produced between June 2011 and June 2012 at Bambësch, on the edge of the city of Luxembourg, increasing awareness is not just on an individual level but is also inscribed in a contemporary social theme.

The Walden project is firstly a book project, I’d almost say a bookobject that aims, through its quality of paper and layout, to awaken in the person who leafs through it the memory of sensations that daily life has dampened. From the publication I developed the project in terms of an exhibition that takes up the initial theme of the banal beauty of the forest in everyday life by reinforcing the formal aesthetic idea. Immersion in this timelessness and finding oneself through a forest qui near of the city is obviously echoes the experience of the late XIXth century American philosopher Henry David Thoreau who lived in a primitive state in a hut in the forest a few kilometers from the village of Walden in Massachusetts for two years. It was during this period that he wrote philosophical texts that denounced industrialization and the loss of human values. By getting closer to nature, we get closer to ourselves. When we are a little more ourselves and become a little more natural, it’s in the nature of things that we automatically avoid adversely affecting the other. That’s the very essence of H.D. Thoreau.

More than a tribute, this will be an invitation to reread Thoreau and rediscover the merits of his ideas and experiences. But it is also a call to the public, to the practice of spending more time in nature, immersing oneself therein, if only for ten minutes here and there.

Firstly, I think each photograph will be interpreted differently, each reader invents his own story but also becomes aware of the natural cycle, repetition and rebirth the image documents. Each photograph is a forest he can take away with him. This loophole perhaps enables him to see himself in terms of himself and in relation to the other and thus find balance in a stressful existence.

In your series you paradoxically proceed in both a conceptual and a spontaneous way. The initial protocol is clear: space / time is limited, you always use the same camera and you favour banal recording. During production the angles of view have slightly changed and the interpretation has become more complex.

It is true that the initial apparatus was well defined. Don’t forget that I was also motivated by the obsessional, repetitive and serial dimension of the project. In two years, through covering thousands of kilometers in this small wood, I have produced around 15 000 photographs with my Leica M9 armed with Summicron 35mm and Summilux 21mm lenses. In focusing on the banality of my subject, which was my first preoccupation, I gradually realized as the work

progressed that I could also explore the potential richness of these photographic recordings.

Can we talk about the importance of the two “photographic“ times? The time of the shot, concentrated on the ordinariness and banality of recording, and the time of the selection and reading of the image that intensifies the initial concept by perhaps giving it a more aesthetic and ethical scope?

There are even three times. The millions of images I have in mind, before starting to shoot, form a sort of photographic mantra through the repetition of the action. I initially let myself be guided by my feelings, aesthetic and ethical reflections are not important when I start taking photographs. Even if the postulate was to photographically explore the banal beauty of Bambësch Wood, I rapidly understood that it was necessary to go beyond this idea. I have myself had the experience Thoreau mentions in his texts and it only makes sense if these feelings can be shared. That’s why the reception of photographs is of considerable importance.

Indeed, the aim is for the viewer to be freed in front of the artwork.

It’s a question of the automatism of the brain to reference, in other words to create an image equal to its own points of reference and filters. Consequently, while the repetition of verticality may seem disturbing, it’s only because, through our memory, we allow our brain to play tricks on us by associating elements from our past. It’s one of the reasons why I have renounced any explanatory note in this piece. The subject ideally lends itself to this interpretative game.

Indeed, mere “banal” nature, meaning the few dozen hectares of cultivated forest in front of our door, doesn’t really represent danger or mystery – unless they are produced by our memory !

With the juxtapositions, which are often very subtle, the paradox of the image conjures up particular analogies. The viewer becomes active through a certain creative reception of the artwork. A playful aesthetic game which can become disturbing through repetitiveness and verticality?

FRANÇOIS BESCH VON GLÜCKSPILZEN & ANDEREN LICHTWELTEN

Kennen Sie den Amanita muscaria? Bestimmt tun Sie das, auch wenn ihnen der lateinische Name fremd ist. Dahinter versteckt sich nämlich – ganz banal – der Fliegenpilz. Und der gilt, obwohl er eigentlich giftig ist, allgemein als Glücksbringer. Ein „Glückspilz“ sozusagen. François Besch hat vom späten Sommer bis in den frühen Winter 2012 hinein die Wälder durchforstet und sich auf die Suche nach Waldpilzen gemacht.

Dabei hat er alle möglichen Gattungen entdeckt und vor Ort porträtiert.

Für den Künstler stellen diese Organismen – weder Pflanze noch Tier – etwas ganz besonderes dar, eine spezielle, spezifische Form der Existenz. Pilze sind geheimnisvolle Zeugen einer Natur, die auch heute noch, in Zeiten, wo die Menschheit bereits von Kolonien auf dem Mars oder anderen Planeten träumt, unendlich viele Geheimnisse birgt. Darüber hinaus sind sie für den Fotografen François Besch „natürlich gewachsene Skulpturen, nahezu perfekte Kunstwerke, die den meisten unter uns, auch denjenigen, denen der Wald nicht fremd ist, weil sie ihr tägliches Joggingpensum hier absolvieren, leider nicht auffallen“. In seiner aktuellen Ausstellung Von Glückspilzen und anderen Lichtwelten in der Galerie Clairefontaine stellt der Künstler nun gerade diese ebenso komplexen wie faszinierenden Kleinode der Natur im Ausstellungsraum im Erdgeschoss in den Mittelpunkt. Im Obergeschoss der Galerie liefert uns François Besch darüber hinaus einen Einblick in sein weiteres aktuelles Schaffen: Zu sehen sind hier sowohl Landschafts- und Naturfotografien, bei denen er sich vor allem mit den Licht-Schatten-Kontrasten auseinandersetzt, als auch Beispiele aus der Portraitreihe 100 Faces, an der er seit 2010 arbeitet, und erste Eindrücke aus der neuen Serie Cybercities.

The Amanita muscaria, commonly called fly agaric, although a very poisonous mushroom, is also said to be a lucky charm. For the artist François Besch, fungi are very special organisms. Neither plant nor animal, they represent a particular, specific form of existence: mysterious witnesses of the diversity and power of nature. Thus François Besch set out to roam the woods in search of forest mushrooms from the late summer to the early winter in 2012. He discovered many different species and portrayed them on the spot as “naturally grown sculptures, almost perfect works of art, who most of us, even those who are familiar with the woods because of their daily jogging activities, simply overlook”.

The exhibition Lucky Charms and Other Light Worlds at Galerie Clairefontaine showcases these fascinating gems of nature. The exhibition also gives insight in François Besch’s more recent work with landscape and nature images emphasizing the contrast between light and shadow, and the viewer is offered a first glimpse of the new series Cybercities.

Dans le cadre de l’Atelier Luxembourg, la Villa Vauban – Musée d’Art de la Ville de Luxembourg a organisé un concours s’adressant aux artistes contemporains nés ou travaillant au Luxembourg. Les participants ont été appelés à considérer la Villa Vauban sous ses aspects les plus divers en s’intéressant à ses collections, à son architecture voire son site ou même à ses fondateurs, à travers leurs approches artistiques respectives.

Sous le thème Alt. Macht. Neu., le concours entend ainsi tisser des liens dynamiques et passionnants entre l’art classique et l’art contemporain. Les participants ont dû veiller à ce que leurs conceptions et œuvres réalisées intègrent soit le musée, soit ses collections, respectivement s’y réfèrent de manière compréhensible. Parmi les quatres lauréats du concours (Vera Kox, Julie Goer gen, Marco Godinho et Marco Scozzai & Saskia Raux), les curateurs du Mois Européen de la Photographie ont choisi de présenter les projets de Marco Godinho et Marco Scozzai & Saskia Raux. Leur recherche visuelle pertinente et leur apport photographique respectivement vidéographique original s’insère parfaitement dans le cadre des manifestations du Mois Européen de la Photographie.

« Les fondateurs des collections de la Vil la Vau ban, Jean-Pierre Pescatore, Leo Lippmann et Eugénie Dutreux-Pescatore, se retrouvent simultanément dans un seul portrait photographique. Pour accentuer le rapport de liaison, chaque portrait est intercalé avec une image de la Villa Vauban, comme on la connaît aujourd’hui. Six images sont donc réunies sur un même support pour dévoiler des interférences, des rencontres inespérées entre elles. Le portrait final consiste en une seule image lenticulaire/holographique qui utilise l’effet flip, technique qui permet de prendre une suite d’images pour visualiser sur la même lentille un sujet animé. Les images parvenant d’époques différentes s’interchangent selon l’angle de vision et selon le rythme du mouvement du corps dans l’espace pour révéler à chaque fois une position différente. » Marco Godinho

« Les collections de la Villa Vauban - Musée d’Art de la Ville de Luxembourg regorgent de ta­bleaux et gravures représentant le pays, et en par­t iculier la Ville, sous différents angles, à travers diffé­r ents médias et au fil des décennies. Ces images font appel à notre mémoire collective, aux connaissances et expériences qu’ont les habi­tants de leur environnement de vie. Et si d’habitude les visiteurs du musée viennent admirer des œuvres qui relatent l’histoire de la Ville et font apparaître son aspect d’il y a un siècle et demi, il nous est apparu intéressant de confronter l’historique et le contem­porain autant d’un point de vue chronologique qu’ar­t istique : superposer les époques, les moyens d’ex­pression, les regards sur la ville et les médias.

Au sein d’une installation vidéo, une image actuelle composée et animée à partir d’éléments réels captés dans la ville, rencontre l’image d’une gravure du XIXème siècle issue des collections de la Villa Vauban représentant une vue de la Ville de Luxembourg.

Après avoir repéré les lieux dans la ville et adopté le point de vue de l’artiste qui a créé la gravure à l’époque, nous avons filmé en plan fixe l’instant et l’aspect présent.

L’image actuelle est par la suite projetée sur l’image d’époque en superposant le même point de vue. Les deux images se confrontent et se confondent par in­crustation. La gravure s’anime tout en étant retranscrite dans notre époque. » Marco Scozzai & Saskia Raux

Dans ce jeu du local théorique et du global opératique l’acte critique peut contribuer à définir ses propres « disturbances » au service de l’œuvre, en y apportant une autre dimension corporelle.

L’image contemporaine filtre et fictionne le réel. En cela, elle ne différe pas de l’image moderne ou classique, seul le contrôle collectif et central de son opération a été abandonné. En morcelant ce contrôle, la techologie a multiplié les opérateurs et dissipé l’illusion collective d’un ordre unique, en faveur de mythologies locales. Ainsi le spectateur contemporain est contraint au commerce frénétique de ses stocks personnels d’images, avec l’espoir que sa version privée et exangue du réel prenne le pas sur les autres. L’image et l’opération photographique, dans toute sa complexité, sont à la pointe de cette lutte.

Nicolas Giraud développe une pratique centrée sur les mécanismes de l’image.

Rolf Sachsse Space Time Architecture in Computer Games Night times are short in computer games, and the days seems to last endlessly.

Space is either narrow – in most of the shooting genres – or it is displayed in the flatness of a battlefield – as in most of the simulations. Architecture in computer games has to follow these rules of time and space as much as functionalism had to follow the rules described by Sigfried Gideon in his ground-breaking book. The only function architecture will not have in computer games, is providing a space for living and working. The lecture will present a number of samples for this thesis.

In her current research project, she studies contemporary Dutch landscape photography as an expression of the extremely man-controlled, systemized and industrialized nature, that the Dutch landscape is. She highlights the work of Gerco de Ruijter - aerial photography that show the geometrical shapes and grids that man makes in the land, that is iconic for this artificial land.
