1. Introduction     Windermere  Community  School   windermere.vsb.bc.ca

3155 East  27th  Ave.  Vancouver,  BC,  V5R  1P3   Tel:  (604)  713-‐8180   Fax:  (604)  713-‐8179   E-‐mail:  windermere@vsb.bc.ca     Windermere  Community  School  is  a  public  school  in  Vancouver,  BC.  It  is  just  over  50   years  old,  and  has  a  variety  of  unique  programs  to  show  for  it,  such  as  its  famous   Leadership  and  Athena  Arts  curriculums.     Windermere  is  also  very  well  known  for  the  time  and  service  its  students  put  into   the  community.  Students  are  eager  to  donate  their  time  into  community  service,   including  running  extracurricular  activities  in  local  elementary  schools  and   volunteering  to  participate  and  help  run  events  in  Vancouver.     2.  Website  Goals     The  main  goal  of  the  website  is  to  provide  information  and  resources  about   Windermere  Community  School  to  parents  and  students–  this  includes  its  staff,   programs,  and  clubs.  The  secondary  goal  of  this  website  is  to  promote  and  inform   site  visitors  about  current  events  at  Windermere  through  the  school  news,  online   bulletin,  and  social  media.

3. Audience     The  main  people  in  the  audience  of  this  website  will  be  students.  Students  are   generally  very  used  to  going  on  the  web  and,  as  the  younger  generation,  expect   websites  to  be  organized  and  fully  functional.  They  usually  do  not  have  much   patience  for  poor  organization  or  any  sort  of  delay  in  finding  what  they  need.  They   will  be  looking  for  information  on  the  school's  current  events,  courses,  and   programs.     The  secondary  audience  is  mainly  parents,  many  of  whom  are  not  as  familiar  with   computers.  They  might  visit  Windermere's  website  to  find  out  what  is  going  on  at   the  school,  or  to  find  the  school's  contact  information.  The  may  also  look  at   specialized  programs  for  their  child  such  as  Windermere's  Leadership  or  Athena   Arts.  The  site  needs  to  be  user-‐intuitive  so  that  they  can  easily  find  what  they  are   looking  for.       A  small  portion  of  the  site  is  targeted  toward  teachers  and  school  staff,  who  are   there  to  access  the  staff  website  or  look  for  resource  links  for  their  students.  These   people,  who  vary  in  age  range,  will  most  likely  know  how  to  use  a  computer  enough   to  get  around  easily  on  most  websites.     3.1.  User  Scenario       Jessica  is  enrolled  at  Windermere  Community  School,  and  is  currently  in  her   final  year.  Because  she  is  involved  with  the  school's  newspaper,  she  will   sometimes  check  the  school  website  to  look  for  relevant  information  to  the   articles  she  writes.    As  one  of  the  school's  journalists,  it  is  important  for  her   to  keep  up  with  events  and  happenings  at  her  school.     Name:  Jessica  Su

Age: 18   Clubs  &  Programs:  Leadership,  Windermere  Word  (school  newspaper),  and   Tutoring   Characteristics:  Outgoing,  social,  inquisitive     What  User  is  Looking  for     1. Information  on  school  programs  and  current  events.   2. Important  resources  for  students.   3. The  school  bulletin,  calendar,  and  schedule.     Web  Experience  and  Expectations     Jessica  uses  her  computer  very  frequently  to  write  her  articles  and  do  her   homework  assignments.  She  also  loves  and  spends  a  lot  of  time  on  social   media  such  as  Facebook,  Twitter,  and  Tumblr.  Like  others  of  her  generation,   she  is  very  familiar  with  computers  and  is  easily  frustrated  when  technology   doesn't  run  smoothly  or  is  confusing  to  navigate.     User  Tasks  on  this  Website     1. Look  for  information  relating  to  the  articles  she  writes.   2. Keep  an  eye  out  for  potential  stories  or  features  that  could  go  in  the   school  paper.   3. Keep  up  to  date  with  the  school  bulletin.   4. Review  the  resources  available  to  her  as  a  student  of  Windermere   Secondary.

5. Recommendations     5.1.  Content     Organization

Windermere  Community  School  has  a  hybrid  organization  system  in   the  main  navigation  bar.  First,  it  is  split  by  audience  into  two  sections-‐   the  main  content  pages  are  meant  for  students  and  parents,  and  a   small  restricted  section  is  for  staff  only.  Second,  it  is  split  by  topic–  the   links  to  "Departments",  "Programs",  and  "Resources"  are  a  few   examples  of  this.  The  news  entries  are,  logically,  ordered  by  date–  the   newest  entries  are  at  the  top  of  the  list  and  they  go  back  from  there.   The  items  under  these  labels,  for  the  most  part,  make  sense.  There  are   only  a  few  changes  I  would  make  to  them.     I  noticed  that  many  pages,  even  under  the  same  category,  are  not   consistent  in  content  organization.  I  suggest  rectifying  that  by  having   the  same  format  on  every  page  within  each  local  area  except  when   necessary.  For  example,  under  the  "Progams"  category,  content  on  the   "Leadership",  "Athena  Arts",  and  the  two  Career  programs  pages  are   inconsistent  in  format  (including  headings,  organization,  etc).  Using  a   consistent  format  for  each  of  these  pages  will  keep  users'  thoughts   and  the  website  organized  and  clean.     I  would  also  reorder  some  of  the  links  under  each  heading  in  the   navigation.  In  some  places  what  I  would  expect  to  be  closer  to  the  top

6

Windermere Community  School  –  Website  Critique

of each  category  is  near  the  bottom,  and  vice  versa.  In  any  and  call   cases,  what  users  would  most  likely  look  for  is  what  should  be  near   the  top  of  the  list.       Navigation     This  website  does  a  fairly  good  job  when  it   comes  to  its  global  navigation  system  that   allows  for  movement  between  different   categories.  However,  I  do  think  that  the   website's  hierarchy  could  be  defined  a  bit   further,  as  there  is  no  available  site  map  or   other  form  of  browsing  aid.  The  global   navigation  simply  lists  all  the  links  under  that   category,  but  I  think  at  least  a  few  of  those   links  could  be  grouped  together  into  smaller   subcategories.  While  it  wouldn't  be  suitable  to   do  this  for  every  part  of  the  global  navigation  system,  I  think  that   perhaps  it  would  be  helpful  particularly  in  the  "Programs"  category.   (See  proposed  site  map)     None  of  the  pages  seem  to  have  a  local  navigation  system  or  sidebar,   which  is  acceptable  because  most  of  the  content  is  short  and  does  not   require  one.  However,  if  any  lengthy  pages  were  to  be  added,  I  would   consider  adding  a  local  navigation  system  that  would  scroll  with  the   user.  Alternatively,  chunks  of  information  could  be  spread  into   different  subcategories,  but  I  would  still  recommend  a  sidebar  to  help   users  navigate  to  related  sections.

Windermere Community  School  –  Website  Critique

Labeling     The  primary  issue  I  see  with  the  current  labels  is  that  they  could  be   more  focused  and  descriptive.  For  example,  the  "Mission  Statement"   page  contains  information  about  the  school–  I  suggest  changing  this  to   "About".  Not  only  is  this  a  link  that  is  more  common  and  easier  to   read,  more  people–  including  parents,  who  may  not  be  business  or   computer-‐oriented–  will  be  able  to  make  a  good  guess  about  what  is   on  this  page.  Also,  the  PAC/Parents  link  could  be  shortened  to  either   "PAC"  or  "Parents".  Having  both  makes  the  link  unnecessarily  long.     There  is  also  a  link  I  noticed  in  the   Students  section  called  "Photos-‐  New".   This  leads  to  a  page  with  a  preview  of   the  yearbook.  Since  it  is  difficult  to  tell   where  this  leads,  I  think  something  like   "Yearbook  Preview"  would  be  better,   unless  Windermere  is  planning  to  put   other  photos  on  that  page.  In  any  case,  I   would  take  out  the  "–New!"  part  of  the  link.       There  are  a  number  of  unclear  labels  on  the  site–  for  instance,  links   labeled  "Click  here!"  definitely  should  be  replaced  with  something   more  descriptive  of  the  content  the  link  contains.  And,  on  the  clubs   page,  the  contextual  links  to  almost  every  club  end  with  "club"–  this   could  be  removed  for  cleanliness  and  it  would  still  be  obvious  to  the   audience  what  the  section  contains  due  to  the  "Student  Clubs"   heading.

8

Windermere Community  School  –  Website  Critique

Some labels  are  too  long.  One  heading  on  the  Career  Prep  page,   "Career  Preparation  Focus  Areas",  could  be  shorted  to  just  "Focus   Areas"  without  losing  any  meaning.  All  labels  should  be  as  short  as   possible  while  still  describing  what  content  they  contains–  for   example  "Calendar  and  Schedule"  could  just  be  shortened  to   "Calendar"  or  "Schedule",  because  users  would  expect  all  content   related  to  the  schedule  to  be  on  that  page.     Search     The  search  scheme  is   ordered  in  the  same   fashion  as  the  news   entries–  chronologically.   This  does  not  make  sense,   since  the  pages  are  be   static.  Instead  of  having   the  most  relevant  results   turn  up  first,  the  newest   entries  are  first  on  the  list.  Searching  "English"  will  bring  up   information  about  this  year's  exam  schedules  (which  include  the   English  exam),  which  was  written  more  recently  than  the  actual   English  page.  This  could  be  because  the  site  was  made  with   Wordpress,  but  having  more  recent  result  come  before  more  relevant   results  is  a  problem  on  a  information-‐based  site  like  Windermere's.     Another  issue  with  the  search  system  is  the  keywords.  While  testing,  I   searched  "math",  and  the  math  department  page–  which  in  my   opinion  should  be  first  to  show  up–  did  not  appear  in  the  results.   Instead,  I  got  "August  Provincial  Exam  Re-‐writes",  "Science"  (the

9

Windermere Community  School  –  Website  Critique

department page),  and  "Staff  Directory".  The  math  department  page  is   labeled  as  "Mathematics",  but  has  the  word  "math"  all  over  the  page.   The  results  I  got  were  not  what  I  expected,  and  this  may  confuse   users.     5.2.  Technology     Windermere  Secondary's  website  is  WordPress-‐based.  This  means  that  the   CMS  will  be  simple  and  user-‐friendly  to  interact  with  for  staff  inexperienced   with  more  complicated  CMS  systems.    I  recommend  keeping  this  system  and   continuing  to  update  the  site  in  the  same  manner.  The  format  of  WordPress   sites  also  makes  it  very  easy  for  audiences  to  find  what  they  are  looking  for.     Windermere  does  not  require  any  other  technologies  on  their  website.  The   few  pages  with  flash  capabilities  should  be  replaced  with  written  content–   users  will  find  this  unnecessary  after  just  a  few  times  of  loading  it.  Also,  it   increases  the  wait  on  the  page  and  does  not  allow  mobile  users  to  access  the   content  on  that  page.       Second,  I  noticed  that  on  two  pages-‐  "Athletics"  (under  Programs)  and   "Library"  have  a  full  website  under  the  page's  content.  While  I  understand   that  this  makes  the  website  more  readily  available  to  the  user,  it  also  makes   the  page  load  more  slowly,  both  on  regular  computers  and  on  mobile.  For  the   Library  section,  another  link  to  the  library  catalog  website  could  be  added  to   "Library"  in  the  global  navigation  system  or  in  the  resources  section.  For  the   Athletics  website,  since  it  doesn't  purely  relate  to  Windermere  Secondary,  a   link  to  the  website  could  be  added  to  the  resources  section  instead  of  having   the  whole  website  on  the  athletics  page.  Alternatively,  a  simple  link  to  the   Athletics  site  could  replace  the  full  website  loading  underneath  the  content.

Windermere Community  School  –  Website  Critique

5.3  Design     Overall,  Windermere  Secondary  has  a  unified  design.  Orange  and  blue,  the   school  colours,  are  used  consistently  and  work  well  together  with  a  mix  of   energy  and  trust–  the  feelings  these  colours  are  associated  with.     The  content  and  nature  of  the  site  does  not  call  for  complex  layouts  or  excess   animation  and  graphics,  but  there  are  only  a  few  changes  I  would  make  to  the   current  design.         At  first,  I  didn't  think  there  was  any  sort  of  search  scheme  on  the  website.    I   found  the  search  bar  floating  in  the  banner  of  the  site.  Upon  first  glance,  it  is   not  very  clear,  so  I  think  it  should  be  moved  to  the  global  navigation  bar,   where  there  is  space  for  it.     The  text  size  is  also  somewhat  small.  This  is  best  demonstrated  on  the   "Athena  Arts"  page,  users  should  not  see  a  wall  of  small  text.  It  is  difficult  to   read  and  not  optimized  for  online  reading.  Because  this  applies  to  call  pages,   I  recommend  changing  the  size  of  the  body  content  to  make  it  more   accessible  to  all  users.
