E-Hawk Harriers Growing In Number And Desire by Dan Voigt EMMETSBURG - With 33 runners reporting for the Cross Country Season, Emmetsburg Head Coach Valerie Pickett has the pleasant dilemma of seeing her team almost double in size this year. A strong group of runners return in Pickett’s third year as leader of the pack. Even though the Lady E-Hawks just missed a state qualification last season, the enthusiasm and talent of that team remains intact and is led up by seniors Taylor Reimer, Rachel Ruddy, Maura Soukup and Madison Reimer. Also returning to the squad are Caroline Fantz, Tara Harris, Mikki Mundus, Ema Enriquez, Allison Gould, Emily Bonnstetter and Kiersten Aldous. In 2012, Mikki Mundus led the girls at the Lakes Conference meet with a 19th place finish, while Taylor Reimer was 25th and Caroline Fantz finished 31st. Tara Harris earned 34th place, with Rachel Ruddy finishing 38th and Emily Bonnstetter finishing 39th. Newcomers to the girls squad for the season include Queen Mukami, Cassidy Clark, Madeleine Mueller and Charlotte Wolden, along with Jordan Hoyman, Shelby Loomis, Ashley Overberg and Jordan Lange. On the boys side, Brett Steinkamp returns for his senior season after a limited junior year due to a knee injury. Also returning for the E-Hawks are Nick Grandstaff, Lane Smith, Michael Clasing and Daniel VanOosbree. At the Lakes Conference meet in 2012, Nick Grandstaff finished 32nd, while Daniel VanOosbree earned 47th place. Lane Smith finished 48th and Michael Clasing earned 49th place.

Joining the boys ranks this season are Caige Elbert, Jas Jamison, Conner Cosgrove, Cole Jackson, Will Jackson, Christian Strohman, Carson Clark. Dillon VanOosbree and Dalton Hauschen. “We have nine boys who are new to the sport,” noted Coach Pickett. “These new, young faces will lift our guys up from where they were finishing last year. I know they are able to compete against some of the schools in our meets this year.” Nick Grandstaff will be called upon to lead the boys, according to Pickett. “Nick has put in a ton of work over the summer, so don’t be surprised if you see him on the list of state qualifiers in October. He has dropped considerable time and will be contending for one of the top 10 spots at our state qualifying meet.” Things look very positive for the ladies as well, according to Pickett. “On the ladies side, we have 19 runners, with eight new to cross country. Our entire squad returns from last season and are extremely pumped up and ready to run this year.” After missing a trip to state by three points last season, there is plenty of motivation for the Lady E-Hawks this Fall. “I know the girls are hungry to avenge that disappointing finish,” Pickett noted. “The new ladies on the team are going to give a competitive edge that was lacking for us in the first part of the season last year. We have senior Taylor Reimer as our top returning starter and I expect to see her lead us to Fort Dodge in November. Overall, I am thrilled with the effort these kids put in over the Summer, and I can’t wait for the season to get started.”

E-Hawk Football - The Tradition Matters by Dan Voigt EMMETSBURG - When people gather to talk about prep football in Iowa, some programs immediately come to mind for years of exceptional accomplishment. It goes without saying that the E-Hawks of Emmetsburg are one of those programs. Consider nine State Championships, in three separate classes since 1974, and you have a tradition of success that many teams wish for. If you had to identify what makes Emmetsburg football the living, breathing entity that it is, the answer is simple - Tradition. For years, its been tradition at Emmetsburg that the E-Hawks take Duane Twait Field by running down the hill from their locker room. A year ago, an archway was erected at the top of the hill overlooking the field. For the 2013 season, the arch contains a simple message for each E-Hawk player as they pass under the archway - “Tradition Matters” Emmetsburg Head Coach Mike Dunlap is a firm believer in tradition - a tradition that includes hard work both on and off the field - in the weight room, in the classroom, and in the community. For Dunlap, who is in his 21st year of coaching at Emmetsburg, the philosophy for the upcoming season is simple. “We’re going into this season with the attitude that we have to play our best game every Friday night, and yet, we have to always build on what we’ve done and continually improve.” The improvement is obvious, with Dunlap’s teams amassing a record of 67-12 during his tenure of leadership along with Assistant Coach Joe Carter. Also assisting the E-Hawks are Coaches Dave Fog, Bruce Nelson, Tyler Beving, Brett Hanson, Jeremy Zeigler, Jarrod Joynt, Jarred Pickett, Travis Birkey, Marc Riley and Rick Jones. There’s another part of the E-Hawk story - E-Hawk Pride. There is an almost mystical property to E-Hawk Pride. From the elementary school students who write letters of support to the players each week, signs in business windows, and the fan support of the team all season long. All of the elements combine to help fuel the players to achieve and succeed. As the defending District Champions for 2012 in Class 1A District One, the E-Hawks suffered one regular season setback in a non-district loss and ended their season in the 1A Semifinal playoffs. But like so many teams, graduation took its toll on the E-Hawks in May of this year. Perhaps the most notable loss was of Class 1A Player of the Year and Iowa Newspaper Association Ed Thomas Mr. Football Award winner, Andrew Wellik. Other outstanding players lost to graduation included Austin McCartan, Jake Jackson, Nick Schany and Cody Henderson. Also graduating were Brady Garrelts, Taylor Wegner, Mitch Peterson, Trevor Ring, Jon Hesse, Brady Bailey, Nick Merwald, Tyler Leuer, Jerry Besch and Ryan Borchardt

vs Spencer @ Boyden-Hull/rock Valley vs North Union @ okoboji vs Manson Northwest Webster - Homecoming @ Western Christian vs Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn @ South o’Brien vs LeMars Gehlen - Parents’ Night All Games Kickoff @ 7:00 p.m.

Even with those losses, don’t count the E-Hawks out in any way, shape or form. A rock-solid group of returning letterwinners step up to take their turns as the leaders of the E-Hawk machine for the coming campaign. Leading the way are tri-captains Brandon Elbert, Aaron Bird and Shay Mortenson. Elbert will take over the reins of the offense as quarterback, with Bird in the backfield and Mortenson on the line. Also stepping up will be Allen Jensen and Brady Christensen in the backfield as well. Austin Krause will return as a tight end, along with Brian Merril and Erik Drost will line up as a split end. The line will be ready, with Tanner Dahm, Patrick Brennan, Tyler Henson, Joel Hoyman, Steven Huang, Joe Jackson, Austin Lietz, Doug Vesey and Scottie Yates rounding out the lineup. Several juniors will also move up into the thick of the mix for the E-Hawks, starting with Zach Anderson as a quarterback, along with Jacob Kibbie and Greg Wesley as running backs and Jacob Miller, Joey Lowman and Niels Witt as split ends. Junior linemen will include Michael Woodruff, Luke Jackson, Wesley Brennan, Nick Chapman, Austin Frerichs, Nicholas Jackson, Joseph Schmidt and Lane Ver Mulm. Sophomores this season include Keagan Barrett, Alex Bell, Spencer Bird, Luke Dahm, Alex DeFord, Clayton Freeman, Cameron Heddinger, Kyle Louwagie, Robert Nelson, Eli Reichert, Chance Saathoff, Nathan Schiek, Wes Schultes, Colin Smith and Chris VanHeuvelen. Freshmen joining the program this season are Mason Carrigan, Dalton Connelly, Grant Deitering, Max Dunlap, Michael Frerichs, Kyler Hofer, Jason Huang, Aaron Hutchison, Gage Jamison, Matt Kibbie, Andrew KRieg, Tanner Lundgren, Phillip Manz, Austin Noll, Angel PErez, Nickolaus Plantz, William Schany, Jade Schleisman, Thomas Schultes and Brent Wesley. The E-Hawks will enter their second year of play in Class 1A District One, with North Union, Okoboji, Manson-Northwest Webster, Western Christian, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, South O’Brien and LeMars Gehlen Catholic returning as the league foes. Every game will once again be a challenge for the E-Hawks. “These are all quality football programs who will play us hard because of who we are,” Dunlap noted. “But, our coaching staff is very confident in this group of young men. They all know the game of football, they understand the tradition and pride that is E-Hawk Football and they all know what they need to do every night out on the field.”

Lady E-Hawks Optimistic For Season by Dan Voigt EMMETSBURG - When a volleyball team loses five seniors, one might think that the future could be a little rough. Add in the challenge of playing in the ever-tough Lakes Conference, and the upcoming season on the courts for the Emmetsburg Lady E-Hawks guarantees a challenge for the year. But Head Coach Andrea Accola-Sabin and the Lady E-Hawks are more than ready to accept that challenge and assignment of improving on a 4-29 season in 2012. Accola-Sabin, who is in her sixth year at the helm of the Emmetsburg volleyball program, has four returning letterwinners out of 30 young ladies reporting for drills this season. Even though graduation saw the loss of Miranda Vlasman, Whitney Kibbie, Jacque Carlson, Emily Noll and Britni Will, Senior letterwinner Kendall Deitering returns along with fellow seniors Tegan Olson, Devyn White, Shelbie Christensen and Staci Schmeling to anchor the Lady E-Hawk varsity squad. Also returning to the squad are junior letterwinners Michaela Rehm, Alexa Naig and Ashton Connelly. Juniors Katie Ruiz and Taylor Knight round out the varsity squad for this season. For the season, Kendall Deitering will hold down a defensive specialist role on the team as well as serving as a setter, while Alexa Naig will also see action as a setter and backside hitter. Michaela Rehm will return in her role as libero player and Ashton Connelly will fill the position of middle hitter. Shelbie Christensen will see action this season after missing last season with an injury and will play as a setter in the lineup. Tegan Olson, also rehabilitated from a knee injury, will be a middle hitter, while Devyn White will be an outside hitter along with Taylor Knight. Staci Schmeling will play as a backside hitter and Katie Ruiz will double as an outside hitter and backside hitter.

The Junior Varsity team will feature 14 young ladies for Assistant Coaches Tim Rodemeyer and Jessica Cedar. Juniors Katie Ruiz and Taylor Knight may see double-duty with the Junior Varsity squad as well as their duties on the varsity squad for the season. However, a large group of sophomores will compose the nucleus of the JV netters. Leading the way will be Laura Moser, Cierra McAllister, Katie Mason, Bailee Garrelts, Jenna Chapman,, Kiersten Duhn, Olivia Hampe, Avery Ringlaben and Kenzie Upton. Freshmen Kayla Joyce, Sara Pugh and Kate Jackson will also see some action on the Junior Varsity squad. Rounding out the Emmetsburg Volleyball squads for 2013 will be the Freshman squad, with Alli Enriquez, Helena Fantz, Morgan Fischer, Allison Freeman, Ali Weir, Darion Helle, Kate Jackson, Kayla Joyce, Bailey Naig, Sara Pugh, Natalie Ruiz and Sarah Simington. “I feel the strength of the team will be our defensive play this season,” Accola-Sabin said of the varsity Lady E-Hawks. “When we were at team camp, we were able to dig many balls, but we could not put them away, so our offense will need to continue to improve.” With the Lady E-Hawks playing in the Lakes Conference, facing perennial volleyball powers such as Western Christian is a challenge that Emmetsburg won’t shy away from, according to Accola-Sabin. “We have some of the finest teams in the state in our own conference, so we will go into every game with an attitude of everything to gain and we will learn from our opportunities, which should help us become a more experienced team.” As the pre-season practices have progressed, the Lady E-Hawks have worked hard on polishing fundamentals, something that Accola-Sabin has emphasized all through the first couple weeks of practices. “We have been working a majority of practices on hitting, serving and passing,” AccolaSabin noted. “This is the first off-season that a majority of the girls came to open gyms so I am looking forward to a successful season.

E-Hawk Swimmers Members Of Algona Squad by Dan Voigt ALGONA - In the water, everything is blue. The camaraderie of a combined team is highlighted with the Algona Area Swim Team, which features swimmers from Algona, Bishop Garrigan, Estherville Lincoln Central and Emmetsburg High Schools. For the 2013 season, Coach Jim Fisher welcomes two Emmetsburg High School students to the team, senior Maddie Stubbs and freshman Michelle Goodman. Stubbs has been a member of the team all through her high school career, advancing into high school swimming from the Emmetsburg youth swimming programs. Goodman moves up to the high school program after also participating in Emmetsburg’s youth swimming programs. The Algona Area swim team numbers 14 in all for Fisher, who is in his 11th year as the head coach. Leading the way this season in their independent schedule will be six returning letterwinners. A trio of seniors pace the squad, starting with Maddie Stubbs, who will compete in the Intermediate Fly and Freestyle events. Abby Strohman will compete in the freestyle and breaststroke events and Emma Plathe with swim the freestyle events. Also returning as letterwinners are sophomores Casey Harms in the backstroke and freestyle events, Emily McMahon in the IM and breaststroke and Conner Yi, swimming the fly. Also being counted on for contributions to the team this season are senior Dasha Hollinger,

along with sophomore Ashlyn Reimers. Additionally, six freshman will also step into action, including Michelle Goodman, Jessica Anderson, Cam Shaw, Morgan Lanndorf, Sophie Curtis and Bridgett Finely. Coming off a season that saw fourth place finishes at Des Moines North and Charles City Invitationals and an eighth at Regionals, the Algona Area team finished 3-9 last season. “We are a very young team with four seniors and no juniors, so our sophomores and freshmen will have to step up for us,” Coach Fisher noted.

Lady Wolverines Ready For Net Season

by Dan Voigt WEST BEND - Coming off a season with a three-way tie for the conference championship and a post season run that ended one game from the state tournament, the Lady Wolverine volleyball team of West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate has some lofty goals for this season. After tying with North Union and Harris-Lake Park for the championship of the Cornbelt Conference last season, the Lady Wolverines finished the season with a 29-5 record that took them deep into the post season before falling to Janesville in a Regional final. But that was then, and this is now. For first-year coach Brandi Akridge and Assistant Coach Charla Montag, the task before them is to replace six seniors lost to graduation. Courtney Bargmann, Meredith Collins, Sam Hartman, McKenzie Grimm, Heather Fehr and Kayla Banwart are gone from that lineup, but four letterwinners return from the 2012 squad to lead the 2013 edition of the Lady Wolverines. Leading the way are senior libero players Jennalyn Thul and Lauren Thatcher, along with senior Ashley Schmidt, an outside hitter and senior Emily Bormann, a middle blocker. Joining the varsity lineup full time this season will be senior Andrea Knobloch as a setter, along with junior Lauren Link as a setter. Also flighting up will be seniors Harrison Schmidt, an outside hitter, and Calla Knobloch, a defensive specialist, along with Cassie Gearhart. Also stepping into the varsity rotation will be juniors Rachel Wirtz as an outside hitter, Kylie

Wirtz as a middle blocker and Brooke Schmidt as a setter and defensive specialist. For the Junior Varsity squad this season, seven players join Brooke Schmidt and Kylie Wirtz, who will see double duty. Joining the JV will be Taylor Fogarty, Laura Fehr, Taylor Elbert, LaRae Knobloch, Rachel Hoffman, Anna Zaugg and Abby Zaugg. With just 19 girls in the program this season, Coach Akridge knows that there will be growing pains, no matter what. “One of our weaknesses that we have to improve on is our communication on the court,” Akridge admitted. “We also have to improve on moving with the ball as we play.” But there is always a silver lining in any cloud, as the old saying goes, and the Lady Wolverines have plenty of positives going their way as well. “We have a very solid group of girls this season,” Akridge noted. “They are a group of tremendously hard-working girls and we have some very solid hitters, too.” With the 2013 season being the final one for the Cornbelt Conference, as it disbands at the end of the 2013-14 school year, the importance of each league game isn’t lost on Akridge and the Lady Wolverines. “The conference is going to be a tough battle, any way you look at it. North Union and Harris-Lake Park are always going to be very solid, but we have a lot of spirit and desire and I feel we will play well this season.”

Wolverine Pride To Figure Into Upcoming Season by Dan Voigt WEST BEND - With the new football season at hand, the Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate know that they can’t rest on the past reputation or accomplishments of other Wolverine teams before them. In short, every game will require the utmost effort from Coach Pete Kapustynski’s team, and that’s something that every player donning the purple and gold is fully aware of. Coming off a 7-4 season in 2012 that saw the Wolverines qualify for the post-season, only to be eliminated in the opening round, the 34 athletes reporting for drills this season want to improve on that mark as their primary goal for the upcoming season. For Kapustynski, who is in his sixth year at the throttle of the program and his 28th year as a coach, the task of forming the team requires great care and help from assistant coaches Paul Peppmeier, Dave Cirks and Mark Wenzel. Graduation took six good players from ranks of the purple and gold last season, including Dustin Johnson, Ashton Fehr, Kurt Banwart, Aaron Montag, Adam Riesenberg and Dan Eubank. Even with those losses, the Wolverines return nine letterwinners, led by senior quarterback Jesse Zinnel and his brother, Jason Zinnel at an end’s position. Also returning are senior running backs Nate Grimm, Davey Jergens and Jordan Buhs, along with senior center Braden Knobloch. Also returning are junior letterwinners Jack Fehr as an end and Carson Wirtz as a guard, along with sophomore guard Cole Banwart. “We have great senior-oriented leadership coming back,” Kapustynski noted. Other seniors who will be looked to for contributions for the Wolverines this season are Aaron Horne and Oliver Bjorkkvist as linemen and Tyler McKimmey and Max Lehner as

running backs. The Sophomore class will figure into the game plan heavily this season for West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate, starting with Nolan Robert Dahlhauser as a quarterback. Travis Fehr, Nolan Grimm and Nolan Roger Dahlhauser will step up as running backs, while Dalton Knobloch, Taylor Bennett, Jack Banwart and Harmon Atwood will all figure in as ends in the overall scheme. Stepping into places in the line will be Ben Auten, Caleb Horne, Luke Nielsen and Jonathan Bennium. From the Freshmen ranks, the Wolverines will get Mike Fehr as a quarterback, along with Jeff Riesenberg as a running back. To bolster the line, Tristen Ruppert, Adam Gambell, Charlie Fehr,Corbin Studer, Garth Fehr, Colton Wickman and Josh Origer will round out the roster. Even with solid numbers, depth could figure into the Wolverines’ season. “Some of our younger players will need to step it up quickly because depth is a problem for us as some spots,” Kapustynski admitted. For the upcoming season in Eight-man District Two, Laurens-Marathon. Newell-Fonda, North Iowa, CAL Community, Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne, Northeast Hamilton Blairsburg and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire remain the targets. “Our district winner could be any team this season,” Kapustynski said. “For us, we will have to have our game pants on every Friday night, but there has been a lot of hard work by our boys in the off season.” For the Wolverines, the season actually started on Friday night, Aug. 23, with a Week-Zero game at Northwood-Kensett.

GT/RA’s Titans Geared Up For Gridiron Campaign by Dan Voigt GRAETTINGER - After a year of growing pains in bringing two programs into one cohesive unit, Head Coach Todd Hough is looking forward to the 2013 season to see just what the Titans of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire will accomplish. Coming off a 3-6 mark last season, the Titans have 44 players donning the purple and white this season for Hough, who is assisted by Lucas Hough and Shawn Morris. In preparing for this season, Coach Hough and the Titans bid farewell to seniors Blaze Alesch, Carter Williamson, Zach Chicoine, Hunter Minor, Kevin Smith, Austin Rehm, Kyler Dose, Tanner Naig and Trevor Hagedorn. However, the cupboard is far from empty. Returning to lead the Titans this season are All District senior linebacker Matt McGrauth, along with All District junior tailback Mason McGrauth and All District Honorable Mention lineman Cody Thompson. Also returning as letterwinners for GT/RA this season are seniors Garrett Parker as and end and Kyle Dalen as a fullback. Marcus Girres, a junior quarterback and Daniel Moyer, a junior lineman, also return along with junior Kyle Long on the line and junior Ryan Jacks in the backfield, as well as sophomore Michael Girres as an end. Other seniors returning for the Titans include Victor Handy, Brian Scott, Alex Peterson and Hunter Brown as guards, along with Jake Wegner as an end and Damien Sulwalski as a running back. Juniors that will contribute this season include Connor Sturgil and Tyler Hougie as ends, Kodi Ferguson and Jeff Kathman as guards. Lane Reiman will see action as a quarterback, with Jon Georgeopolis as a running back. This season, the Sophomores will move closer to the heart of the effort this season. Andy

Geelan and Taylor Enderson will see action as quarterbacks, with Tyler Hoffman and Alex Hoffman as running backs. Serving as ends from the sophomore class will be Nick Josephson, along with Jared Sikora, Cole Hagedorn, Noah Stukey and Jesse Colhour. Stepping up to high school ball will be a baker’s dozen freshmen. Eric Sundall is projected as a quarterback, along with running backs Sam Skattebo, Carter Anderson and Peyton Brower. Nate Harris and Marshall Broadie will go as centers in the line, with Kason Guin, Ethan Boughey and Josh Petrich as guards. Playing as ends will be Dustin Vanderpool, Alex Chicoine and Jordan Thompson and Dylan Peton. With good numbers of personnel, the returning players will be called upon in a big way, according to Coach Hough. “We are looking for some of our letter winners that didn’t start last season to step up and play a bigger role for us this season,” Coach Hough said. “We do have a few returning starters from last year, but we have some key spots that will need someone to step up and fill those spots for us.” With pre-season practices going well for the Titans, the outlook for year two in Eight-Man District Two will be interesting once again. The Titans will see old in-county rivals West Bend-Mallard, along with Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne, Northeast Hamilton, Laurens-Marathon, Newell-Fonda, North Iowa and CAL Community. “Our district will be very tough this year,” Hough noted. “I look for the four teams from out district that made the playoffs last year to be tough again this year. But, practices for us have been going pretty well and the kids have been working hard. I look forward to a good season for the Titans this year.”

GT/RA Titans Growing Together As A Team by Dan Voigt GRAETTINGER - After some growing pains in the first year of a shared volleyball program between Graettinger-Terril and Ruthven-Ayrshire, the 2013 edition of the GT/RA Titans has come a long way from that first season in 2012. Titans Head Coach Stephanie Hanson and Assistant Coach John Fulton have 21 girls in grades 9-12 reporting for action on the court this season, despite losing five seniors to graduation. While graduation claimed Alyssa Hoffman, Cassy Hampson, Katie Noah, Amanda Aielts and Hannah Neilson, a half-dozen returning letter winners will provide the leadership on the court for this final season of Cornbelt Conference volleyball action, as the league is dissolving at the end of the 2013-2014 school year. Leading the way for the Titans this season will be seniors Marly Bakken, Emily Moran, Grace Skattebo and Kelley Harris, along with juniors Morgan McGrauth and Lauren Flaharty.

Other seniors joining the mix will include Caroline Koekenhoff, Paige Hoffman, Sheila Larson and Hannah Groshens. The Titans also have three sophomores and six freshmen in the program for the season. “We are looking to our seniors to be the leaders, on and off the floor,” noted Coach Hanson. “We have a great group of girls coming back from last year, and we now have one year under our belt playing together at Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire. We’ve grown a lot from the beginning of last season.” The upcoming season won’t be without challenges in the league, even if it’s the last year. “The biggest competition we will have in the conference will be H-LP,” Coach Hanson explained. “They won the conference last year and will be strong again this year. We will need to work on staying aggressive and staying positive, and work on our communication. These girls are willing to work hard and stay late if needed. Through hard work and desire, we hope to be very competitive in the conference this season, as well as in the post season.”
