PROJECT

This project of sheepfold takes place in the hill landscape of Ardèche, in the south east of France. This project is composed in two main buldings, the sheepfold and the cheese factory, along with a small storage space. Those three buildings draw tree axes that open and frame on the landscape.

Borrow the landscape.

PROJET

PROJECT

First of all, this regional city of settlement, immigration and citizenship is a place. A place where stories are told. A place where people meet. A place where stories are transposed in various forms. It gives a place to all those stories that have neither a place neither a date in common, to all those unique stories that form a whole together. A story is always told under the spectre of something, here it’s the story of Saint-Étienne told under the spectre of its inhabitants from the past, the present and the future. Languages. Sayings. Writings. Images.

2

This place is adapted to the three families of the language : sayings, writings and images. This place is a support for the stories, all the stories about settlement, immigration and citizenship, from the past, the present and the future. The point for visitors and for the city of settlement, immigration and citizenship is to learn without any master who have all the knowledge. Thus, an equal approach between all the protagonists of this place is setup. We think that the visitor knows as much as the curator about settlement, immigration and citizenship. In short, we are creating a real meeting and exchange place.

PROJECT

This project takes place in Shanghai. Slightly out of the city, an old industrial neighborhood is now under exploited. At first, an urban project is made in order to revitalize this neighborhood by choosing to give it back its boundary to the water, to the channel. This new boundary built a strong link between the main street and the promenade along the water. Between those two entities, housings within gardens are build. In the same frame, a school, an herb pharmaceutical shop and an open theatre are developed. This open theatre is the refurbishment of an industrial building. We only keep the frame of the posts, and we set up the spaces that we need for this theatre. And then, we connect those spaces together with some ramps, they come and dance between the posts. This theatre grows from the ground which create a public place continually open between the main street and the promenade on the water. The back of the scene is open in order to enjoy the scenery offered by the landscape of the port behind.

PROJECT

“Architecture as a political practice” class’s aim is to show how architectural theory and architectural practice can be in harmony. The theme of labor guided all of our works. Richard Sennett’s book, The Craftsman, has been our starting point. It’s about craft, craftsman and craftsmanship. In short, it’s about the link between intellectual labor and manual labor. The aim of the project is to propose an architectural disposal that can interrogate the organisation of labor today, and that can also link intellectual labor and manual labor.

There clearly is a lack of motivation in labor, ever since it became an individualized and marginalized tool for consumption.

Today in the US, 65% of individuals are not satisfied with their jobs. (source : Right Management Survey) 3

4

The gap between manufacturing workers and factory administrations is increasing, especially in terms of wages. Today the head is much more paid than the hand.

Full of inequalities and competition between workers. 5

6

As we can see in the graph, in the US a CEO earns more than 300 times an average worker of his company. (Source: Institute

Broadly speaking, we can say that intellectual and manual skills that used to belong together are separating and dividing ‘head’ and ‘hand’ work.

for Policy Studies and AFL-CIO analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2016)

7

8

What remains ?

And this is not only because manual labor and craftsmanship are being undervalued, but because they are actually disappearing! In the US only 4 percent of the population are working in the manufacturing industry! (the same proportion of people is living with a disability pension). ( source : bureau

The main consequence is that we are no longer able to produce daily objects. Once we remove them from our lives, practically nothing will remain.

of labor statistics) 9

10

And yet, in the near future, the labor market is expected to be even worse! Thanks to technology and automation, in the year 2000, the curves of productivity and employment splat for the first time in history, and they do not intend to get back together! (Source: Andrew McAfee, Race against the machine)

These jobs are not being replaced and they are creating a huge problem of unemployment! Today the 3 biggest American societies earn 30 times more than those of 1990 employing 1/tenth of workers. (Source: Riccardo Staglianò, Al posto tuo) 11

This is why we need to imagine a new way of working. A new world where head and hand are connected and have the same value! 13

14

For Sennett, Craftsmanship implies the connection between different fields. The craftsman represent the link between problem finding and problem solving, between expression and technique,

between the head and the hand. 15

16

ÂŤ Craftsmanship names an enduring, basic human impulse, the desire to do a job well for its own sake. Âť p.9

As far as we are concerned, Sennett is presenting the craftsmanship as a model for a new society. He imagines an ideal world, where craftsmanship values are applied to both computer programmers, doctors, and even to parents who are raising children. 17

18

19

20

A society that, as we said, can be reached by reconnecting horizontally the head and the hand.

« If we stay our present course [...] we will soon leave the climate of Holocene, the world of prior human history. [...] Humanity’s task of moderating human-caused global climate change is urgent. » Target atmospheric CO2 : Where should humanity aim, J. Hansen, M. Sato, P. Kharecha, D. Beerling, R. Berner, V. MassonDelmotte, M. Raymo, D.L.Royer, and J.C. Zachos. 2008

Before answering, we have to know that our non-durable productive system is the principal driver of global climate change. This means that if we want the next generations to live on this planet, we need to reach a new, sustainable and less productive model. 21

22

23

24

Trying to answer these questions, we imagined a new infrastructure for labor that could radically change the way people work. It is called the Reuse Repair and Recycle Spot. And it consists several and connected workshops where everybody can work when they want to, without any contracts.

The system is simple. When you don’t use an object anymore, instead of throwing it away, you bring it to the closest workshop 25

26

But, if you don’t want to, you can still leave your items there, and they will be repaired and sold by other workers.

Where you can find all the necessary tools to recycle it and repair it by yourself 27

28

in the organization of these infrastructure, we have been inspired by different case studies in the developing counties like India, Brazil and Uganda.

We tried to reform the conditions of labor, by creating a spot where everybody is free to work as they want. They will just have to punch the clock 29

30

and at the end of the month all the benefits from the sales of recycled objects will be divided between the laborers, depending on how much time they have spent on the spot.

Our goal, is to stop the competition between laborers by creating a system where they are not paid for their skills or talent. 31

32

and where there is no difference between production time and learning time. 33

34

We imagined three different political landscapes where our project could take place: For the first scenario (optimistic), we imagined the rise of a new and enlightened political party, that will be able to introduce the basic income and lead to a world where labor is not mandatory. Nevertheless, in this world, people will still be active, and they will spend their energies inside the RRR Spots, created by the government, in order to reach a less productive and more durable society.

For the second scenario (frightening), right wing parties will rise to power. As they already do, they will blame immigrants for unemployment and as a new government, they will try to exclude them from most occupations. This strategy will lead a growing numbers of poor, unemployed and immigrants to start collecting, repairing and selling trash in order to survive. So RRR Spots, will be born spontaneously where they are needed, gathering the poor, and maybe helping them to organize. 35

36

In the third scenario (the one that we have chosen), a growing unemployment will force the traditional political parties to take measures. They will try to create new workplaces by adding a tax on new manufacturing products and they will use these money to make the RRR infrastructure. 37

38

The project is to make three types of spots, so that everyone could easily have access. They are supposed to be different in size and have different tools. One small reusing and repairing-oriented spot should be built for every two thousand inhabitants in the city center. Meanwhile a bigger spot, that includes a small-scale recycling structure, should be built for every five thousand inhabitants in residential areas. And a proper spot, which involves an any-scale recycling infrastructure should be built in industrial and agricultural areas for every ten thousand people.

Considering the french case, where more than 250 billions â‚Ź of new manufactured products are bought every year, we calculated that a 0.43% tax on the purchase of new products will allow in only a year to make this infrastructure. 39

40

We planned to install these spots inside empty buildings, especially in former production spaces. We thought that these spaces should be rehabilitated by reusing materials from building demolitions. Taking the example of Saint-Etienne. We could install a R.R.R. spot inside the former weapon factory. And the use of materials from a close company of building demolition. In order to make a good space for reusing, repairing and recycling. 41

42 44

43

45

46

In conclusion, this system wants to start by reconnecting people, in order to change the world of labor. By reconnecting people we think that it would also generate many other changes and potential revolutions.

The aim of this system is not only to give people a good and paid alternative to their traditional jobs, but also to affect the existing businesses, that will be forced to change their condition of labor, in order to not lose their workers. 47

EXHIBITION

An exhibition come close this semester called “Architecture as a political practice”, firstly in the context of the international biennial of design of Saint-Étienne and then moved to the biennial of architecture of Chicago. This exhibition shows our proposals of new organisations of labor on the basis of literary, philosophical, and sociological publications. The choice of the black board and the long table upon which we disposed our working tools respond to the way we worked during all the semester.

WORKSHOP

This workshop as been proposed by the international biennial of design of Saint-Étienne. Thayaht designed the TuTa in the 1920’s. It’s a working cloth made to revolutionize fashion industry. Indeed, its simple shapes make it accessible to everyone. Thus, anyone can make each his.her own garment in order to adjust it to his.her needs. For this workshop, we choose to make two jumpsuits, like two wacky caricatures, which show that intellectual labor and manual labor cannot be completely apart. One jumpsuits is dedicated to the intellectual worker and the other to the manual worker. We can see, in the choreography, that the manual worker is almost a slave to the intellectual worker, answering to all his needs... although, the first one can leave at anytime.

PROJET

PROJECT

From the hayfork to the tablefork is a project of permaculture training and awareness center. It takes place on the Reunion island. In a territory where the pervasiveness of sugar cane fields in the landscape makes it impossible for the existence local products in our stalls. This project aims to show that agri-food selfsufficiency in Reunion Island is possible. In order to achieve this self-sufficiency, the idea is to give producers and consumers the opportunity to meet in one place to discuss their expectations. Producers will be able to practice their trade in a relationship of trust with consumers. And those can see how grows what they found on their plate. This project is an agricultural college and a training center for adults in agriculture open to the public. It is seen as a farm. The idea here is not to draw a line on the past, to throw away the culture of sugar cane but to see it as a basis for understanding our time. Thus, the chosen site is a former sugar factory today fallow. The one of Pierrefonds, in the town of Saint-Pierre, south of the Reunion island. This factory is classified as historical monuments. It is one of the bests preserved on the island and had shown since its construction a particular architectural and ornamental care. It is therefore a good basis for an architectural project such as this one. The site also offers three hectares of land that can become an agricultural and landscape park, the ultimate meeting place between producers and consumers, around which the various elements of the program are organized. A market, a restaurant, an exhibition space and a conference room will take place in addition to all the program related to teaching around this park. From the hayfork to the tablefork is therefore a project for the re-use of an industrial heritage in a tropical environment that seeks to respond to the permaculture approach.
