PHAT Walking   to   my   the-‐day-‐a\er-‐ party-‐hangout   with   Phat,   I   was   thinking   of   all   the   different   people   that   I   have   worked   with   in   fashion.   There   are   certain   types   of   people   that   are   meant   for   it,   and   loves   every   second   of   it,   and   Phat   is   definitely   one   of   those   individuals.   He   is   one   of   those   personali3es   that   you   just   do  not  forget  about.

More than just a personality

By Leif Latin

I  remember  the  first  3me  I  saw  Phat,  it  was  in  one  of,  as  they  call  them  in  Malmö,   "black   club".   That   is   a   proper   underground   nightclub   with   no   permission   to   sell   alcohol  or  even  to  use  the  facility  at  all  for  what  the  authori3es  would  classify  as  a   nightclub.  Usually  located  in  a  dirty,  griQy  industrial  area  in  the  outskirts  of  the  city  -‐   But  yes,  they  obviously  serve  alcohol  and  loud  music  anyway…

PHAT LAM

LEIF  -‐  Phat,  I  am  exhausted,  and   you   look   stunning.   Thank   you   for   making  love  to  my  3red  eyes.     I  no3ced  that,  as  always,  everyone   was   looking   at   you   at   the   party,   like   they   always   do.   It   must   be   a   real  confidence  boost,  right?   PHAT   -‐   (laughs)   well   yes   I   guess,  I  am  used  to  people  looking   at  me  and  I  am  fine  with  that.   LEIF -‐   Have   you   always   been   into  fashion? PHAT  -‐  More  or  less.  So  it  is  no   coincidence  that  I  work  in  fashion

Age: November 5,1985 Profession: Visual Merchandiser at ZARA. Nationality: Vietnamese   Lives in: Malmö, Sweden LEIF -‐   I   must   say,   I   refer   to   you   as   "him"   but   you   dress   as   a   girl.   I   admire   your   confidence   and   courage   to   do   that,   many   people   Wherever would  probably  not  dare  to?   there is a party PHAT  -‐  Thank  you!  I  like  to  dress   that is worth like  this,  I  like  to  be  able  to  dress  up   and  I  definitely  enjoy  the  aQen3on.   attending - you will Girls   have   a   lot   more   to   choose   find Phat from  when  it  comes  to  fashion  than   boys.     PHAT -‐   I   like   to   meet   new   LEIF   -‐   Yes,   and   with   your   killer   people  and  have  a  good  3me,  so   legs  I  would  probably  also  do  it,  but   for   me   it   makes   no   difference   I   have   really   hairy   la3n   legs   so   where,   as   long   as   people   are   screw   that!   What   I   also   like   about   having   a   good   3me   it   usually   is   you  Phat  is  that  you  never  say  no  to   enough  for  a  great  evening!   a   good   party,   no   maQer   if   it   is   in   a   LEIF  -‐  would  you  rather  be  in  a   dodgy  dirty  bar  with  cheap  beer,  or   dirty   Berlin   underground   techno   in  a  fancy  nightclub  with  expensive   club   with   acid   loving   partykids   drinks  and  model's   running  around,  or  in  a  swedish

pre-‐party   with   people   from   the   suburbs   that   loves   schlager  music?  You  have  to  choose  one.   PHAT   -‐   Oh   my   god   (laughs)   well   I   would   say   the   Berlin   acid   loving   techno   kids,   but   only   because   I   have  been  to  so  many  Swedish  pre-‐party's!  As  I  said   earlier,   I   don't   care   as   long   as   people   are   nice   and   having  a  good  3me!   LEIF  -‐  Are  you  always  aware  of  what  you  will  wear   that  par3cular  day?  I  feel  like  a  hobo  compared  to   you  today,  thank  you  Phat!   PHAT (laughs)   -‐   Oh   no   you   look   fine!   Well   actually  very  aware.  I  can  not  just  wake  up  and  put   on  something  random,  it  has  to  be  at  least  a  liQle  bit   considera3on  behind  my  ourit.  I  can  not  just  put  on   something  random  even  if  I  am  running  late.  So  yes   it   has   to   be   at   least   a   liQle   thought   behind   my   ourit.   I   have   my   "safe   card"   ourits   that   always   goes   with   any  situa3on!   LEIF   -‐   You   work   all   over   Scandinavia,   would   you   say  that  there  is  a  difference  on  how  people  choose   to  dress  within  the  Nordic  countries'?     PHAT   -‐   I   think   that   Danish   people   are   more   individual,   they   tend   to   have   more   of   a   personal  style  and  they  seem   more   relaxed.   And   Swedish   people   tend   to   dress   more   repe33ve,   maybe   they   don't   dare   to   stand   out   from   the   mainstream   crowd.   I   travel   a   lot  and  have  always  been  told   that   Swedish   people   dress   well,  but  that  they  all  more  or   less   dress   the   same.   as   if   everyone  is  going  to  the  very   same   shop   to   do   their   shopping.   And   maybe   that   is   why   I   like   to   be   more   "over   minded   and   friendly.   And   I   know   the   edge",   and   make   people   what  to  wear  tonight,  I  have  planed   look  twice  at  me!   that  since  I  came  to  London!  and  it  is   LEIF  -‐  Allright  Phat,  so  what   Saturday.  Any  epic  plans?   will  you  do  tonight,  you  are  in   PHAT   -‐   I   will   meet   up   with   a   London   and   it   is   Saturday.   friend   of   mine   for   drinks   and   later   Any  epic  plans?   on   to   the   nightclub   Project.   I   love   PHAT  -‐  I  will  meet  up  with   London,   everyone   is   always   very   a   friend   of   mine   for   drinks   open   minded   and   friendly.   And   I   and   later   on   to   the   nightclub   know   what   to   wear   tonight,   I   have   Project.   I   love   London,   planed   that   since   I   planned   my   trip   everyone  is  always  very  open     to  London,  haha!

We   say   goodbye,   the   hug   is   all   sweaty   and   I   feel   how   my   head   is   on   the   verge   to   explode   due   to   the   heat.   And   as   I   see   Phat   walking   away   from   the   park,   he   is   the   center   of   aQen3on,   boys   with   their   "wow"   stare   and   jealous   girlfriends   staring   with   envy  at  Phat's  perfect  legs..       As I see Phat walking  away from the park, he is   the center of attention, AS USUAL

I   wonder   what   adventures   he   will  get  himself  into  tonight.       One  thing  is  for  sure,  he  will  be   the  center  of  aQen3on  tonight..   …  Again

M A G A Z I N E

BERLIN BABY!   We   met   Toby   on   a   hot   summer   day   2010   at   a   mutual   friend's   smoky   and   minimal   techno   infested   flat   in   East   London.   We   had   a   drink,   and   he   told   us   that   he   was   helping   his   friend   with   a   project   in   Berlin.   He   had   this   bag   full   of   s3ckers   from   his   na3ve   Berlin,  they  said  things  like,  ACID,  GERMAN,  DISCO,  and  TECHNO.  Thinking  of  it,  all  of  this   words   preQy   much   sums   up   what   Toby   is   all   about.   3   years   later,   MouneQe   Universe   receives  a  call  at  the  office  from  Berlin,  It  is  Toby  with  his  upbeat  laughter,  he  invites  us  to   Berlin  to  try  out  what  he  and  his  friend  Clare  have  been  working  on.  A  fresh  new  concept  for   a  business  where  you  get  the  opportunity  to  hang  out  with  a  like-‐minded  local  in  Berlin,  and   discover  the  coolest,  most  affordable  places  to  stay  with  the  opportunity  to  hang  out  with  a   local  in  Berlin  that  will  show  you  around.  Your  own  personal  guide  that  will  take you  to  all  the  hotspots  of  Berlin.  Feeling  like  a  local,  rather  than  a  lost   tourist  that  ends  up  at  Alexanderplatz  ea3ng  cheap  Curry  Bratwurst  at   03  in  the  morning  with  other  tourists.  He  had  been  in  a  super  secret   German  laboratory  assis3ng  his  friend  Claire,  cooking  up  this  idea,   planning  on  how  to  realize  it,  based  in  Berlin,  but  with  plans  for   expansion  to  other  major  European  ci3es  such  as  London,     Amsterdam,   Barcelona   and   Paris.   MouneQe   Universe   decided  to  buy  last  hour  3ckets,  get  on  a  plane  bound  for   Berlin  and  try  the  My  Plus  One  concept  out.

SO WHAT IS MY PLUS ONE? My   Plus   One   allows   you   to   meet   familiar  faces  in  unfamiliar  places.  It’s   an   online   plarorm   where   you   can   connect   with   like-‐minded   locals,   and   discover   the   most   stylish   and   affordable   place   to   stay,   in   ci3es   around   the   world.   In   this   way,   you   can   meet   familiar   faces   in   unfamiliar   places.  We  want  you  to  experience  a   city   as   if   you   were   a   local,   and   feel   at   h o m e   w h e r e v e r   y o u   a r e .   I n   November   we   will   launch   a   new   website   that   will   allow   you   to   connect  with  locals  in  London,  Berlin   and   Paris.   Later   in   the   year   we   will   introduce   Barcelona   and   Amsterdam.   We   also   have   Rio   de   Janeiro,   Madrid,   Athens   and   Buenos   Aires   in   the   pipeline.

j

j

How Did YOU COME UP WITH The Idea? Clare   had   the   idea   for   My   Plus   One   because   of   different   reasons.   -‐   First,   I   have   travelled   a   lot   and   moved   to   different   countries   to   live   alone.   I   think  as  a  newcomer  to  a  city  you  can   o\en  feel  a  bit  disconnected  from  the   local  scene  and  what’s  going  on,  a  bit   like  an  outsider.

j

I  thought  it  would  be  great  to  create  a  way  of   connec3ng   travellers   directly   with   the   local   scene   of   city.   Locals   have   a   more   extensive   and   up   to   date   knowledge   of   a   city   as   they   experience  it  on  a  daily  basis.  Their  knowledge   is   therefore   far   more   valuable   and   accurate   than  an  online  or  printed  guide  for  instance.  I   am   also   passionate   about   sustainable,   inspiring  and  thoughrul  design,  which  is  why  I   created   the   My   Plus   One   Berlin   apartment,   and  have  only  partnered  with  proper3es  that   have   a   focus   on   design   /   architecture,   affordable   nightly   rates   and   green   ini3a3ves.   Such  as  the  Michelberger  Hotel  and  Linnen  in   Berlin.

DAY 2

What   a   night   yesterday!   We   decide   to   start   our   hot   summer   day   by   having   fruit   salads   and   Berlinian   C l u b   M a t e   s o d a s   i n   the   Tiergarten.   Berlin's   central   park.   Also   known   as   the   rave   playground   of   the  infamous  Loveparade.

By   now   our   stomachs     are   screaming   for   proper   food   and   Toby   knows   the   perfect   place,   Toca   Rouge   on   Torstrasse.   Asian   fusion   place   with   healthy   sexual   awesomeness   for   your   palate   (like   ‘Deep  Throat  Avocado’)  in  a  small,  all  black,  super-‐ sleek  open  sea3ng  place.                       Before  we  head  home  to  the  hotel,  we  pay  a  visit   to   No.   74   located   in   MiQe,   uber   sleek   &   cool.   (Also  have  shops  in  Paris  and  London  under  no.  6   and  no.  42,  respec3vely).

DAY 1

We   have   the   weather   gods   with   us   as   Berlin   is  experiencing  one  of  the  hoQest  summers  in   years.   We   take   a   taxi   to   the   Michelberger   Hotel,   an   alterna3ve,   well   blended   crowds,   sweet   hostel   rooms   -‐   easy   social   place   with   frequent   events,   weekends   and   under   the   week,  the  place  you  go  to  for  mee3ng  peeps   from   afar.   check   in   and   freshen   up.   The   atmosphere   in   the   hotel   is   relaxed   and   friendly.   An   hour   later   or   so,   Toby   is   wai3ng   in  the  lobby,  and  we  head  for  dinner   at  Schwarzwaldstuben.

A\erwards   we   are   stuffed   and   can   hardly   walk,   so   Toby   takes   us   to   the   Victoria   Park   for   some   hang   out   in   the   sun,   located   in   Kreuzberg.   Cool   mixed   with   old   Berlin   flair   and   non-‐junkie   nature.   And   since   we   are   in   Kreuzberg,   Toby   recommends   the   VooStore,   it   is   industrial   and   rough,   and   we  wish  we  had  bigger  wallets.   Back   home   we   get   ready   to     p a r t y   a t   K a t e r h o l z i g ,   brainchild   of   the   legendary   Bar25   folk,   where   techno   meets   vocal   house,   confex   meets   gliQer   and   the   hipster   meets  the  hippie.

The   evening   comes   and   we   meet   up   with   Toby   at   Amano,   midscale   reduced-‐to-‐the-‐max   design   hotel   with   budget   rooms   to   penthouse   apartments.   Swanky   bar   with   some   of   the   most   talented   bartenders,   ace   drinks   and   service   plus   an   uber   popular  roo\op.                                                                             From  the  sexy  drinks  at  Amano,  we  head  to   Prince   Charles,   skater   dudes   and   skater   chicks   throwing   skater  par3es  with  ska3ng  contests,  in  an  old  pool.   With   recently   acquired   Func3on   One   speakers   to   broil  your  brain!

MEETS

I met Alex a hot summer day in a central park in Berlin… where   we   both   were   trying   to   enjoy   a   bit   of   sun   despite   to   a   nearly   unbearable   summer  heat.  We  started  to  talk  about  life  and  projects.  It  took  me  a  good  2  hours   of  discussion  and  a  refreshing  200m  swim  session  together  in  a  pool  located  in  the   park,  before  I  realized  that  this  enthusias3cally  speaking  bearded  man  was  the   personality  behind  the  stage  name  Gummihz.  I  was  blinded  by  his  way   of  talking,  fast,  could  not  understand  how  he  had  3me  to  breathe  in   between   sentences.   He   spoke   fluent   English   with   a   good   vocabulary,   without   lexng   go   of   his   charming   Greek   accent   that   I   totally   fell   in   love   with.   Alex   (Gummihz)   is   a   passionate   person   talking   about   love   and  how  daily  falling  in  love  func3ons  as  an  inspira3on  for  his  music.  "I   fall  in  love  several  3mes  a  day,"  he  says  “That  is  my  inspira3on”   Curious   as   I   am,   I   asked   if   I   could   stop   by   his   studio   during   my   stay   in   Berlin,   and   if  I  could  take  my  camera  crew  with  me  for  an  interview.  When  he  sad  yes  with  a   big  happy  smile,  I  called  my  friend  Benoît  MalpheQes  to  help  me  out.  The  day   a\er   we   spent   the   whole   day   together   and   made   a   exclusive   video   to   let   the   whole   this  awesome  musician  to  the  world,  that  we  had  the  great  pleasure  of   mee3ng  in  Berlin.
