“Our time with the Red Cross has been rewarding. We wouldn’t do it this long if we didn’t enjoy it.” Consider them the sweethearts of the American Red Cross. Since they married in 2005, John and Jan Belsly have dedicated their time volunteering together at the Chisholm Trail Chapter. Their commitment to the position as DAT volunteer captains is not only beneficial to the chapter, but has made an impact on their lives as well. After retiring from his job, John was eager to find a way to give back to the community. He began working with the Red Cross seven years ago after having lunch with a colleague who suggested he take a volunteer course. Since then, John’s passion for the organization led him to recruiting Jan as a fellow volunteer. When John asked Jan for her hand in marriage, he also proposed that she retire from her job and volunteer with him at the Red Cross. The Belsly’s are both qualified canteen drivers and trained in family services, making them a perfect team to handle a disaster site. While volunteers are asked to remain on-call for only two shifts per month, John and Jan reserve one week each month from October through May for remaining on-call during the day shifts. The Belsly’s are allowed to keep a canteen on hand during that week making it convenient to respond quickly. It’s strictly business for the Red Cross Sweethearts once they reach the scene. While John goes to assess the damage, Jan speaks with the family and determines their needs. Working together as both a couple and a team has given the Belsly’s the chance to give back to their local community.
